“Nobody has ever made money selling America short. We're an extraordinary country.” — John Steele Gordon To honor America's semiquincentennial birthday, the Wall Street Journal has been celebrating the most impactful American inventions of all time: 1. Internet2. Light bulb3. Integrated circuit4. Personal computer5. Airplane The railroad doesn't even make the top twenty. But the business historian John Steele Gordon validates the list. Gordon's piece for the WSJ series is titled “From the Telegraph to the Smartphone: How Information Technology Unified a Nation.” His argument is that the United States was always in danger of falling apart and the telegraph saved the republic. Then radio, television, and even the now vilified internet knitted it even closer together. Otto von Bismarck quipped that God looks after three things: fools, drunks, and the United States of America. Gordon agrees with the Prussian unifier of Germany. Nobody, he notes, has ever made money selling America short. As for the now venerable republic, he thinks it's still in pretty good hands. The ever expanding national debt, however, is another matter. That certainly wouldn't get onto Gordon's top 250 most impactful American inventions. Five Takeaways • Hanging by a Thread: The Communication Crisis at the Founding: George Washington's fear was not philosophical: it was geographic. The original United States, stretching to the Mississippi, was larger than all of Western Europe. The trans-Appalachian West couldn't get its commerce over the mountains — it had to go down the Mississippi, which was controlled by Spain. Washington said the West was hanging by a thread. Every subsequent expansion — to California in 1850, to Oregon and Washington — only deepened the crisis. The republic could not exist without communication. That is why the post office was almost constitutionally important in Washington's time, and why the telegraph and the transatlantic cable were understood as national security technology, not merely as business. • The Atlantic Cable: Ten Days to Ten Seconds: In 1800, a transatlantic crossing took two months westbound and six weeks eastbound. By the 1850s, with steam, it was ten days either way. Cyrus Field — a paper merchant who knew nothing about cable technology — read about undersea cables and decided to lay one across the Atlantic Ocean. Gordon compares this to reading about Sputnik and deciding to go to Mars. It took six tries and ten years. William Thomson — Lord Kelvin — did the physics. The result: ten days to ten seconds. Basically simultaneous. The nineteenth century was right to call itself an age of miracles. • The Robber Barons Were Misunderstood: As early as the 1850s, the New York Times was calling Commodore Vanderbilt a “robber baron” — after the medieval German toll barons on the Rhine who wouldn't let your boat pass without paying. Gordon's verdict: the dead can't sue, but they should. Vanderbilt built a faster, safer, cheaper transportation network than had existed before. He died the richest man in America in 1877, worth $105 million. Henry Ford did the same thing with the automobile: took a rich man's toy invented in Germany and built one the average man could afford. Gordon sees Elon Musk's reusable rocket in the same tradition. Nobody complained about their products. They complained about their wealth. • The Internet Is the Greatest American Invention: The Wall Street Journal's ranking puts the Internet at number one, above the light bulb, the integrated circuit, and the personal computer. Gordon agrees. The Internet has changed everything in thirty years, and — he thinks — we've basically seen nothing yet. Scholars bless Google every day. Gordon spent decades going from index to index in the books behind him; today the entire intellectual world is at everyone's fingertips. The railway, which actually unified the national economy by allowing factories in Worcester, Massachusetts to ship shoes across the continent at lower prices, doesn't make the list. Gordon doesn't quarrel with that either. • God Looks After Fools, Drunks, and the United States: Gordon's July 4th assessment: optimistic about the republic, alarmed about the national debt. The debt, he says, used to be used only for wars and great depressions. It is now used to ensure that no member of Congress ever loses an election. The budget system of the federal government is an unbelievable national disgrace. But the republic itself? Bismarck was right. Nobody has ever made money selling America short. It remains, Gordon believes, a blessed country beyond any other in the history of the world. He's not sure about the fools and the drunks. But he's pretty sure about the Americans. About the Guest John Steele Gordon is an American business and technology historian and journalist. He is the author of An Empire of Wealth: The Epic History of American Economic Power, A Thread Across the Ocean: The Heroic Story of the Transatlantic Cable, and many other books. He writes for The Wall Street Journal and Commentary. About Keen On America Nobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. In Keen On America, Andrew brings his pointed Transatlantic wit to making sense of the United States — hosting daily interviews about the history and future of this now venerable Republic. With nearly 2,900 episodes since the show launched on TechCrunch in 2010, Keen On America is the most prolific intellectual interview show in the history of podcasting. Is 8 dollar per gallon gasoline coming soon? Australia and most other European countries have said sorry to Trump... we're not going to help you block the strait of Hormoz. Trump said fine we don't need you anyway. Then today in Australia... A massive fire has broken out at the Viva Energy refinery, one of only two operational refineries in Australia, which processes about 120,000 barrels of oil per day. Coincidence?

At last, someone with some common sense in their head, some basic humanity in their heart, and some fundamental democratic values in their soul – is speaking out. Many someones, actually. Indeed, a coalition of dozens of progressive groups representing millions of Americans is uniting in straightforward populist opposition to the far-out right wing's loopy assault on diversity, equity, and inclusion.Bizarrely, Trump's menagerie of extremist Republican politicos has been waging a furious war against these basic egalitarian ideals, trying to turn DEI into a partisan bugaboo. That's goofy and ultimately self-defeating, for they are asking voters to reject their lifelong admiration for these positive social goals. Consider the value of D, E, and I:One, diversity. That's “us,” the marvelous mix of common people, cultures, and beliefs that gives America vitality and resilience. Two, equity. That's just another word for “fairness,” so why do they want to demonize that?Three, inclusion. Hello – that's what “democracy” means – we all belong and our voice matters.Yet, the Trumpians are using brute authoritarianism to try ripping these core democratic values out of the fabric of our society. And, pathetically, many major corporate powers, universities, media outlets, and other institutions that ought to stand against these Orwellian dictates, have pusillanimously capitulated, hoping the GOP's imperious regime will reward them with financial favors. When institutions fail the people, We the People have to rise up. That's the momentous rallying cry of some 70 nationwide groups of gutsy democracy fighters organized by Color of Change to stand up for the invaluable Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that make America… America! Love it or hate it, the freedom to say obnoxious and subversive things is the quintessence of what makes America America. But our say-almost-anything approach to free speech is actually relatively recent, and you can trace it back to one guy: a Supreme Court justice named Oliver Wendell Holmes. Even weirder, you can trace it back to one seemingly ordinary eight-month period in Holmes's life when he seems to have done a logical U-turn on what should be say-able. Why he changed his mind during those eight months is one of the greatest mysteries in the history of the Supreme Court. (Spoiler: the answer involves anarchists, a house of truth, and a cry for help from a dear friend.) Join us in an episode we originally released in 2021, as we investigate why he changed his mind, how that made the country change its mind, and whether it's now time to change our minds again.Special thanks to Jenny Lawton, Soren Shade, Kelsey Padgett, Mahyad Tousi and Soroush Vosughi.LATERAL CUTS:Content WarningFacebook Supreme CourtThe Trust EngineersEPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Latif NasserProduced by - Sarah Qariwith help from - Anisa Vietze Signup for our newsletter!! Produced by Rob Cavallo, the band delivers earnest lyrics paired with arena-ready production. Upbeat riffs, cinematic string arrangements by David Campbell, and vulnerable songwriting all combine to make their sound distinct. Tracks like “Dizzy,” “Black Balloon,” “Broadway,” and “Iris” balance introspection and radio-friendliness. Deep cuts add emotional complexity and raw energy. The album established the Goo Goo Dolls as melodic hit-makers and proved vulnerability and anthems can work together.Color Me Badd – C.M.B. (1991)The breakout debut from this Oklahoma City vocal group became a cornerstone of R&B, pop, and New Jack Swing. Signature grooves sample Betty Wright and Lyn Collins, hooks loop through rich harmonies, and the vibe shifts from gospel inspiration to hints of Latin pop. C.M.B. went triple platinum, set a new standard for pop-R&B, and paved the way for a wave of boy bands and vocal groups to follow.Diggin'Dude:Carter Faith – Cherry Valley (2025) This debut blends cinematic country, indie spirit, and strong songwriting, especially on “Sex, Drugs and Country Music.”America – America (1971) A folk-rock classic packed with acoustic warmth, reflective themes, and “A Horse With No Name”.Don:Taylor Swift – The Life of a Showgirl (2025) Upbeat pop and soft rock inspired by Eras Tour moments and high-profile relationships. “The Fate of Ophelia” stands out.Gary Numan – Telekon (1980) A synth-driven, dystopian electronic album that inspired the future of industrial music, highlighted by “We Are Glass”.What album is your secret crush? An expert on Iran and the Middle East, Tom Garrett's analysis and insights are enlightening as America's foreign policy and national security concerns are focused on a strategic region adversely impacted by Iran, a state sponsor of terrorism. Our conversation is focused on: The US airstrikes authorized by President Trump targeting Iran's nuclear sites and the realities on the ground within the Middle East. Lessons Learned in the Middle East | The next step as calls for "regime change in Tehran" grow louder within the Iranian diaspora, and the importance of an organic grown opposition in Iran to revolt, rather than foreign intervention. Focusing on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as it carries out its responsibilities in arresting illegal immigrants involved in criminality. On the efforts of ICE within Virginia: “We are now through over 2,000 arrests as part of the Virginia Homeland Security Task Force. Tom Garrett is a US Army veteran and served in locations including the perilous Balkan region during the 1990s right after the Dayton Peace Accords were signed. He served as Assistant Attorney General, Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2016, Honorable Tom Garrett was elected to represent Virginia's 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Politics Girl Leigh McGowan joins Patti Vasquez and co-hosts Dwayne Kennedy and Rick Gieser to talk about her new book (her first), "A Return to Common Sense: How to Fix America Before We Really Blow It," out now (www.simonandschuster.com/books/A-Return-to-Common-Sense/Leigh-McGowan/9781668066430). The book, McGowan says, is built around "six fundamental American principles, six things we can all agree on, no matter where we sit on the political spectrum, that make America America," including freedom and voting rights. She said she named the book after Thomas Paine's 47-page pamphlet "Common Sense," which was printed and distributed in the 13 American colonies in 1775 and 1776. "People went bananas for it because this was this man writing in common sense-speak for the regular people to understand. And he was making the persuasive argument that we were at a nation at a crossroads. And I think that's where I see us today. We are once again a nation at a crossroads and we can go one of two ways. This time it's not monarchy or independence; it's retaining our democracy or doing some sort of Christian nationalist authoritarian road." McGowan first became known during the pandemic when she started making political explainer videos from her kitchen and shared them on TikTok. "I used to call them breakfast rants," she said, "because that's really what I was doing. I was ranting in the morning at breakfast and just my thoughts on the day. And it really appealed to people. And by the time we got up to 200,000 followers, I thought, jeez, I guess I should get dressed if I'm going to be doing this, and then I thought I guess I should put some mascara on." "I started this because I'm an immigrant who moved to this country and I loved it," said McGowan, who has dual Canadian and American citizenship. "I bought America hook, line and sinker. And then I lived here for a certain period of time and I thought, huh, we are not exactly living up to the values we tell the world we are, that we sell to the world." She added: "I'm not there to be famous, I'm not there to be loved, I'm not there so that you think I'm cool. I'm there to help this country that I moved to, had a child in, and still so wholeheartedly believe in. I really do believe this country needs people who believe in it and want to fight for it. And I happen to be one of those people, then I'm going to stick around and do what I can." Last month's Democratic National Convention brought McGowan to Chicago for the first time. "I absolutely thought that city was spectacular," she said. Catch "Driving It Home with Patti Vasquez" weekdays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Central on WCPT (heartlandsignal.com/wcpt820).

Independence in America” “America the Beautiful Part 1” “America the Beautiful Part 2” “The Crisis at the Border”
It's Friday, June 23rd, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Chris Galanek, sitting in for Adam McManus. By Jonathan Clark At least 700 Christians killed in Nigeria last month The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law reports at least 700 Christians were killed in Nigeria last month. Three hundred of the killings occurred over just three days in the country's north-central Plateau State. It's one of the bloodiest incidents of persecution against Christians in Nigeria. Since January, jihadists have killed over 2,000 Christians in the African nation. Nigeria is ranked sixth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Africa now the world's terrorism hot spot Speaking of Africa, the continent is now considered the world's terrorism hot spot. Counterterrorism experts met this week at the U.N. Headquarters in New York City. They reported half of the victims of terrorism were in sub-Saharan Africa last year. International Christina Concern noted, “The Christian population in Africa faces an exigent security situation as the capabilities and intentions of terrorist groups expand throughout the continent.” Psalm 14:4 says, “Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call on the LORD?” Biden administration loses abortion and transgenderism case In the U.S., the Biden administration lost its case to force Christian healthcare workers to support abortion and transgenderism. The administration missed a Tuesday deadline to appeal a federal court ruling in the case. The ruling protected doctors from participating in actions that violate their conscience. Luke Goodrich, vice president at Becket Law, said, “After multiple defeats in court, the federal government has thrown in the towel on its controversial, medically unsupported transgender mandate. . . . This is a win for patients, conscience, and common sense.” David Horowitz's ominous warning to America America's next presidential election could be her last. That's the contention of David Horowitz, the author of America's #1 bestselling new political book entitled Final Battle. He talks on today's Generations Radio show with guest host Adam McManus. He says the Democrats pose a deadly threat to our freedom. Their real goal is a one-party state. And they are willing to break even Constitutional provision, law, precedent, and procedure to see that it happens. McMANUS: “The third comment that Gary Bauer made about the indictment of Donald Trump: The depth of the corruption in our federal institutions in their politicization is breathtaking. No reasonable person can believe it is merely a coincidence that just as the FBI is forced to reveal a document that finally puts the corruption charges against Biden on the front pages, Trump is suddenly indicted with predictable results.” HOROWITZ: “Biden's family has been made rich beyond their wildest dreams. I just saw an estimated of $50 million in bribes from foreign powers that are hostile to us, starting with China. They're traders. This is treason. “Trump has created the largest patriotic movement in American history. And the Democrats are always trying to portray Trump as a traitor or as somebody who's trying to overthrow the Constitution. “On the contrary, the facts are very simple. Make America Great Again and America First: These are patriotic sentiments and policies and attitudes. The Democrats turn everything on their head, everything they do they project onto their opponents.” To hear Adam's entire 29-minute interview with David Horowitz, author of America's number one political bestseller Final Battle, go to Generations.org/Radio. Charitable giving experiences steepest drop since 2007 The Giving USA Foundation reports charitable giving in America decreased to $499 billion last year, down from $517 billion in 2021. Factoring for inflation, it was a 10% drop in giving, the steepest decline since the Great Recession of 2007-2009. Despite this, churches and religious institutions remained by far the largest recipients of giving last year. Gifts to religious groups totaled $140 billion dollars. The next highest recipients were education and human services, each at $70 billion. Utah school board readmits Bibles into schools and libraries And finally, a school board in Utah reversed course on Tuesday and readmitted Bibles back into schools and libraries. Last month, the Davis School District banned Bibles for not being “age-appropriate.” The decision met with significant pushback before being reversed this week. The issue arose after Utah passed a law last year that lets parents challenge “sensitive material” in pubic schools. Unfortunately, the law, intended to protect children from indecent material, was used as an unsuccessful attack on the Bible. Psalm 12:6-7 says, “The words of the LORD pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. You shall keep them, O LORD, You shall preserve them from this generation forever.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, June 23rd in the year of our Lord 2023. If America lets in the entire Third World, at which point does America become Third World itself? This is an increasingly pressing question to answer, as the end of Title 42 signals absolute anarchy along the U.S./Mexico border. Savanah Hernandez reports from ground zero of the border disaster in El Paso, and Cartel Chronicles author Randy Clark describes the no man's land of northern Mexico as cartels, killers, and human traffickers maneuver for dominance in a land the U.S. government has abandoned to its fate.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
