In this episode of Faculty Feed, Dr. Jon Klein, Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville (U of L), discusses a new institutional grant received by U of L for clinical and translational research. Dr. Klein shares his background and evolution within UofL's faculty, eventually leading him to his current role overseeing research and innovation. The grant, the Clinical and Translational Research Development (CTRD) award, will provide funding to strengthen U of L's research infrastructure, support training for investigators, and build community engagement. Dr. Klein explains the four main "cores" of the initiative: administrative, professional development, health research, and community engagement, each contributing to the university's efforts to double its clinical trials, improve collaboration with healthcare partners, and foster a research culture involving both faculty and citizen scientists. This project aims to create a sustainable pathway for training academic researchers across UofL while building partnerships with underserved urban and rural communities. Esta semana, en un nuevo capítulo de Rebelión Sónica, los invitamos a revisar algunas canciones del nuevo disco del bajista y compositor británico, Jah Wobble, “A Brief History of Now”.

EPISODE 47 A-Block (1:46) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump's appeal of the "Special Master Compromise" is just a stalling tactic so he can time his 2024 announcement AFTER the Mid-terms but BEFORE he's indicted (2:16) He knows announcing before 11/8/22 will undercut many election deniers he needs in place in '24. He may even believe the DOJ won't indict him if he's an announced candidate. (4:00) Whatever the specifics, the appeal to Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court is nonsense: it might as well be 35 blank pages (6:11) The NYT notes he didn't even appeal the ruling that lets DOJ continue using the classified stolen documents in its investigation of him. (7:27) Trump could also be deflecting legal attention from his next real problem: The trial of The Oath Keepers (11:00) Prosecutors played a tape of a November 2020 meeting to plan a violent insurrection and if they can tie it to Trump's inner circle, he's meat. B-Block (14:45) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Ranger in Greenville, Tennessee. (15:48) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: The abortion story won't hurt Herschel Walker. His son's videos will. And what happened to the lawsuit, Hersch? (20:08) IN SPORTS: Our long national nightmare is over: Aaron Judge is the new home run champ. And if you don't think so, ask yourself: which is the all-time Strikeout Record: Nolan Ryan's 383 in 1973 or Matt Kilroy's 513 in 1886? (24:19) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Mehmet Oz, torturer of puppies, competes with Roger Waters and David Zaslav of CNN for the honors. C-Block (30:50) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's the 15th Anniversary of the day MSNBC management told me they'd never let me use Rachel Maddow as my guest host, nor give her her own show, because no woman could get ratings in prime time, and we didn't need a second liberal show, and no LGBTQ woman host would ever attract male viewers! The legendary Jah Wobble, the original bassist of the postpunk band, Public Image Limited and folk-punk legends, The Ukrainians released "Ukrainian National Anthem in Dub" feat. Jon Klein, (guitarist, Siouxsie and the Banshees) in support of UK-based war refugee charities. I spoke with the Ukrainians' lead vocalist, Len Liggins regarding this collaboration. Produced, recorded and mixed by Wobble and Klein, via Dimple Discs, the idea for the song emerged when Wobble's bass tech suggested he do a collaboration with the Ukrainians, long time purveyors of traditional Ukrainians music, heavily influenced by western post punk. The Ukrainians current line-up is Len Liggins, (lead vocal/violin) Peter Solowka (acoustic guitar/backing vocals), Paul Weatherhead (backing vocal/mandolin) and Stephen Tymruk (Accordion).Sales and proceeds from the Ukrainians National Anthem in Dub will be donated to Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal. For a moment in time, it seemed as if we were getting COVID-19 under control. But then the delta variant moved in with a swiftness, and now many of us have more questions than reliable answers. On this week's “In Conversation,” host Rick Howlett talked with Dr. Jon Klein from UofL's School of Medicine about what Louisville and the Ohio Valley Region need to know about the delta variant. How does a variant even compare to the original? Where and when to mask? What's a breakthrough case? How are those vaccinated against the coronavirus protected or left unprotected? What are the concerns of the unvaccinated? How is testing going? Right now the state of Kentucky is experiencing the highest number of new cases and highest positivity rate since February. Dr. Klein discussed what that means. And on a lighter note, we talked about the return of the Kentucky State Fair. Where else can you go to see goats and other animals, peruse award-winning eggs and pies, see goats, ride a carousel, and did I mention goats? This year's fair will feature a photo exhibit called “The Ripple Effects: Exploring Water in Louisville.” We'll meet the exhibit's organizer and learn more. The Kentucky State Fair runs from August 19 to Aug. 29, 2021.
How close are we to having COVID-19 under control? Will Louisville's public schools go back to normal in the fall? Will COVID-19 shots become an annual ritual? Dr. Jon Klein, vice dean of research at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, says that much of life as we knew it may return by the of the summer, but the next one-to-three months are critical. There could be a costly fourth surge of COVID-19 as social behavior loosens faster than vaccines take effect, Klein says. He joins the podcast to explain.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, I have been continually inspired by so many communities that have banded together to help battle this deadly virus. Dr. Jon Klein from Louisville, Kentucky is our next guest who exemplifies a community leader with the tenacity and dedication to servitude that we need during these unprecedented times. Calling the University of Louisville his professional home, Dr. Klein has been instrumental in helping the recently formed Co-Immunity Project become a force of good in the fight against the pandemic. The purpose of the Co-Immunity Project is to study COVID-19 infection and immunity among healthcare workers and in the broader Louisville community and track the movement of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Louisville’s waste and surface water. These findings and understanding from the Co-Immunity Project will help us restart the economy, return to work and schools safely, and ease the burden of worry that uncertainty creates. Join us in our latest Expert Coronavirus update to learn from Dr. Klein as we continue to work together to overcome the most daunting public health challenge of our lifetimes. Episode Highlights: Dr. Klein’s academic background and mission What is the Co-Immunity Project Who are the Co-Immunity Project stakeholders Wastewater detection data and its uses The use of data to guide policy What the Co-Immunity Project can teach other communities About our Guest: Dr. Jon Klein is the founder and director of the University of Louisville Core Proteomics Laboratory and the Clinical Proteomics Program. The Clinical Proteomics Program is focused on biomarker discovery and is recognized as one of the first programs to employ proteomic methods to study renal physiology and pathophysiology and to identify biomarkers of renal disease. Additionally, Dr. Klein is helping lead the Co-Immunity Project, a large scientific research study led by the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute, the Center for Predictive Medicine and the University of Louisville. Using their combined forces, they will study COVID-19 infection and immunity among healthcare workers and the broader Louisville Metro-Jefferson County community and track movement of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Louisville’s wastewater and surface water.
