Keeling Beckford is a reggae renaissance man in every sense of the word. Although not well known even by most reggae fans, he has made an enormous contribution to Jamaica’s most famous export in a number of areas. Getting his start in the music business first as a vocalist, propelled to fame in Kingston and London by early reggae hits like Combination and Suzie Wong, he quickly made the transition to the roles of producer and then label owner of his own 12 Star imprint. It wasn’t long after that that he got started in the videography business, almost single-handedly giving birth to the sound system video industry. (For examples of his video legacy, just go to You Tube and search “live Jamaican sound system.”) Still going strong as a long time all-around reggae impresario, Keeling has led a fascinating, creative and incredibly productive life in the Jamaican music business. I was fortunate to be able to talk to Keeling recently over the phone recently from his home in New Jersey, where he still runs a studio and maintains a warehouse for his online retail music and video business. We talked about everything: from how he got his start as a young artist with the help of Desmond Dekker and Junior Byles, to his pioneering forays into the early NYC hip-hop scene, to his current projects. In 1973, Perry built a studio in his back yard, the Black Ark, to have more control over his productions and continued to produce notable musicians such as Bob Marley & the Wailers, Junior Byles, Junior Murvin, the Heptones, the Congos and Max Romeo. He also started the Black Art label, on which many of the productions from the studio appeared. With his own studio at his disposal, Perry's productions became more lavish, as the energetic producer was able to spend as much time as he wanted on the music he produced. Virtually everything Perry recorded in The Black Ark was done using basic recording equipment; through sonic sleight-of-hand, Perry made it sound unique. Paul Douglas mentions: Scratch had a particular sound and everybody was fascinated by his sound. He had this way of putting things together; it was just his sound and it influenced a lot of people. I've even gone to the Black Ark with Eric Gale for that Negril album; I remember myself and Val Douglas, we laid some tracks there, Eric Gale overdubbed stuff on there, but I honestly don't remember what happened to it Perry remained behind the mixing desk for many years, producing songs and albums that stand out as a high point in reggae history. By 1978, stress and unwanted outside influences began to take their toll: both Perry and The Black Ark quickly fell into a state of disrepair. Eventually, the studio burned to the ground. Perry has constantly insisted that he burned the Black Ark himself in a fit of rage.

Clinton Fearon is a composer, songwriter, singer and player of instruments since his early teens.He was born in Jamaica and become the bassist, vocalist and lyricist for the mythic Gladiators, as well as a session musician for Coxsonne Dodd in Studio One and Lee 'Scratch' Perry's at Black Ark, two of the main producers on the island at this time. He also composed some everlasting bass lines for well-known artists like Yabby You, Jimmy Riley, Max Romeo, Junior Byles and many others.After leaving Jamaica 1987, Clinton Fearon start a new career from Seattle. With other musicians of the Gladiators, he decided to stay in the US and to found The Defenders. Clinton Fearon formed the Boogie Brown Band with local musicians in 1993. th just vocal and guitar, Clinton is playing his music all over the world, in the United States, in France and Europe but also Brazil, Kenya, Peru etc.Clinton Fearon continues to meet new public with solo perfomance in acoustic.In 2012, Clinton Fearon released his second acoustic opus: Heart And Soul. The album gathers 16 songs wrote between 1969-1984, while Clinton was a strong member of the Gladiators. To celebrate these memories, Clinton invited friends for a special tour with Clinton Rufus and Gallimore Sutherland from The Gladiators, and Ire Taylor and Mark Oi from Boogie Brown Band.Clinton Fearon & Friends today is a trio with Clinton Fearon, Clinton Rufus and Mark Oi. In 2014 Clinton Fearon is playing in solo acoustic at the prestigious WOMAD festival, both in Caceres, Spain and in Malesbury, England.

Disc jockey, producer, record businessman, songwriter, singer Lee Perry has been a guiding force in the development of reggae.In addition to his own trailblazing music, Lee Perry has produced hits for the Wailers,Junior Byles,Max Romeo,the Heptones,Gregory Isaacs,Junior Murvin, and the Clash.His recording debut with The Chicken Scratch on Dodd's Studio One label in the early 60s,he became known as Scratch Perry.He produced hits for Justin Hines, Delroy Wilson, and Shenley Dufus.He recorded his own material like Trials and Crosses and Doctor Dick. 1968, he had a hit with People Funny Boy, billing himself as Lee King Perry.People Funny Boy was one of the first real reggae hits.Most of Perry's late-60s hits,like Clint Eastwood,Live Injection, and Return of Django #5 U.K,1969, In 1969 Perry began working with the Wailers. Aston Family Man Barrett and his drummer brother Carlton from the Upsetters become the most acclaimed Jamaican group in the world. Duppy Conqueror,Small Axe,Kaya, and Sun Is Shining were some of the Wailers' songs Perry wrote.In 1974 he built his Black Ark Studio.Perry was one of the pioneers of the reggae instrumental studio art known as dubbing reworking a taped track by removing some parts and exaggerating others.His use of technology such as drum machines and phase shifters gave his mixes a cutting-edge sound that had a profound influence on dub and, later, dancehall. His work in the 70s with toasters like U-Roy, Prince Jazzbo,I-Roy, Big Youth, and Dennis.He also recorded as Pipecock Jackson and under his own name. His most popular releases in the 70s,Station Underground News and Roast Fish and Corn Bread, were vocals.The Beastie Boys invited him to appear at the Tibetan Freedom Concert in New York.He tour with Neal the Mad Professor.Perry is a key influence on 90s trip-hop and electronic dance music. Beverley Kelso, born 20 December 1945 in Western Kingston, is a Jamaican singer. Clinton Fearon is one of Jamaica's most talented musicians. His infectious bass riffs, guitar licks, percussion accents and powerful vocals make Clinton Fearon a living legend amongst reggae musicians and fans. At 17 he founded his first group, Fearon was a house musician for Coxsonne Dodds Studio One and Lee “Scratch” Perry's Black Ark Studio, and composed bass lines for Yabby You, Jimmy Riley, Max Romeo, Junior Byles and others. In 2010 Clinton Fearon presents his masterpiece, Mi Deh Yah. Release first in Franceon the French label Makafresh, Mi Deh . Clinton Fearon is also touring in foreign countries, mainly in Canada, Braziland France. They played at Dour Festival and Reggae Geel Festival in Belgium, Barbican Theatre in London, Garance Reggae Festival in France, and Reggae Jam in Germany. SEEFARI's have received extensive radio airplay around the world, with heavy radio chart action and critical comparisons to Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Pablo Moses. SEEFARI has won numerous awards and his music has been featured on TV and in films.SEEFARI has headline festivals across the USAincluding four years headlining the Houston,Texas-based Bob Marley Festival Tour and an astonishing 24 years straight at Dayton Reggae Fest. The producer Joe Gibbs, hardcore Jamaican entrepreneur, engineer, and record producer started recording artists in the back of his electronics repair shop in 1966. He worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry who had left the employ of Coxsone Dodd's Studio One. Bunny Lee helped them form The Amalgamated record label. Soon 'Niney The Observer' joined the team and they were able to produce Rocksteady era hits. In 1972, Errol Thompson came on board as the chief engineer and together with Joe Gibbs formed "The Mighty Two." Their studio band called The Professionals featured bassist Sly Dunbar, drummer Robbie Shakespeare, and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith. Hundreds of hits came out including "Money in My Pocket" by Dennis Brown and "A So We Stay" by Big Youth. In 1977 the Culture album entitled "Two Sevens Clash" debuted and became a smash hit which coincided with the punk rock craze in the UK. Artists recorded and produced by Joe Gibbs included Dennis Brown, Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Junior Byles, Barrington Levy, Cornell Campbell, Delroy Wilson, Beres Hammond, JC Lodge, Marcia Aitken, Althea and Donna, Ranking Joe and Peter Tosh. The list goes on and on. In the new millennium, Joe Gibbs focused on marketing his back catalog. Joe Gibbs passed on to Zion in February 2008. He had over 100 Jamaica number one hits and over a dozen UK hits. He released music on an array of different record labels. An amazing body of work, the Joe Gibbs catalog includes some very important songs in the story of Jamaican music. Salute to the icon, the giant, one of the greatest producers ever - Joe Gibbs.
