On this week's episode, we are joined by two experts: Dr. Kevin Folta, a molecular biologist specializing in plant biology, and Dr. Nicole Keller, a general pediatrician and member of AAP, to discuss the recent position paper written by 3 pediatricians about GMO foods which is being adopted as a policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics. This paper has countless issues, from omission of relevant data, cherry-picked studies, and inflammatory statements not supported by evidence, and reads like an opinion piece instead of a credible analysis of data. As this will be published in Pediatrics, we discuss the major methodological flaws and the gross misrepresentation of the body of evidence on GMOs, GE technology, and foods. Aside from discussing specific false claims made, we highlight several glaring missteps in critical evaluation of the data. We discuss the implications this misinformation will have on pediatric healthcare, families, and trust in science and medicine. Make sure to listen to the whole thing! “You have to do what's right, no matter how much it hurts.” Dr. Kevin Folta is a molecular biologist who has worked with mRNA for more than 25 years. He is scientist in the genetics and genomics of small fruit crops, a recent farmers market president, and advocate for science communication. And although he's suffered significant personal and professional hardship for standing up for science, he continues to train, teach AND tweet the evidence, because, as he puts it, “you have to say the words” to help combat mis- and disinformation in the agricultural space.  Dr. Folta emphasizes that technology has given us access to the safest, most abundant food supply in human history, and this access is worthy of appreciation - not fear. He wants dietitians to look for the evidence behind mRNA and genetics in food, rather than believing clickbait. As new technology continues to help strengthen our food system, communicating the science behind it will strengthen consumer trust. "As a molecular biologist, it was exciting to see the mRNA technology go into use. We've been watching and waiting for a long time. We'll see it used to treat some cancers and other human diseases.  Its role as a vaccination is just beginning, as we'll see better and more adaptable, less-expensive vaccines that can address emerging pathogens faster. It's potential role in treating livestock is tremendous. Unfortunately misinformation, in some cases spread by internet celebrities and politicians, stands to slow the implementation of this technology by tarnishing public perception. We have a role as scientists, farmers, and ag communicators to challenge these false assertions, as they will negatively affect ranchers, farmers and our animals." mRNA vaccines, in particular, have a huge potential role in livestock health. On this episode, Dr. Folta explains the mechanisms behind the technology, clears up misconceptions about its usage, and urges those in the dietetic and ag communities to challenge false assertions about this and other technologies that can have a positive impact. Ten years ago the biotech world froze and horrific images of three tumor-ridden rats penetrated the media. Social media erupted with messages of fear, and anti-biotech activists celebrated the scientific publication that conclusively linked biotech crops and an associated herbicide to cancer and early death. But at the same time a scientific community noted the shortcomings of the work. Eventually the paper was retracted, and independent research commissioned by the European Union failed to replicate the results. Still 10 years later, the three iconic rodents are used to dissuade the public from accepting biotechnology, and push a false narrative that was codified with the Seralini study. This week's podcast features the views of scientists and journalists, including Dr. Mary Mangan, Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam, Jon Entine, Joan Conrow, Michael Robin, Dr. Stuart Smyth, Dr. Myles Power and others.  The opinions expressed are those of the individual guests and not necessarily those of Kevin Folta, Colabra, or the University of Florida.

In this episode, I talk about how Joe Rogan recently lashed out at the agricultural scientist Kevin Folta when Kevin discussed an alternative interpretation of the scientific data that was different than the one that Joe preferred and was familiar with.Following lockstep with Chris Kresser, an alternative health guru that has been deeply influential on Joe, Jhee has been misled to believe that all exposures to glyphosate are harmful, no matter how low the dose, and expresses anger and outrage that legitimate scientists disagree with him about this topic.I point out that Bruce Ames more than 30 years ago wrote a very influential paper called "Dietary pesticides (99.99% all natural)" (PMID: 2217210), where Ames pointed out that many natural pesticides present in plants already constitute a much higher exposure of "carcinogens" than synthetic pesticides.I also point out that regulatory agencies are nearly unanimous in agreeing that glyphosate is not carcinogenic, that glyphosate is much less toxic than many natural pesticides, and that the exposures to which consumers are subjected at thousands of times lower than the doses required for even mild biological effects. In other words:THE DOSE MAKES THE POISON.Finally, I defend Kevin Folta and point out that he defends glyphosate not because he is paid by corporations (he isn't), but because glyphosate has made agriculture more efficient and safer and has helped feed millions of people. I point out that misinformation about glyphosate and agriculture can lead to higher food prices and less ability for farmers to feed millions of people.===Like, comment, subscribe. For more, find me at:PODCAST The Kevin Bass ShowYOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/user/kbassphiladelphiaSUBREDDIT www.reddit.com/r/kevinbassWEBSITE http://thedietwars.comTWITTER https://twitter.com/kevinnbass/https://twitter.com/healthmisinfo/INSTAGRAM https://instagram.com/kevinnbass/TIKTOK https://tiktok.com/@kevinnbassAnd above all, please donate to support what I do:PATREON https://patreon.com/kevinnbass/DONATE https://thedietwars.com/support-me/

These fossils are relics of ancient primate infections where retroviruses incorporated into the chromosome and became part of the human lineage. While these viral elements have contributed positively to speciation and development of specific human traits, they also have the capacity to become pathogenic. A lot of people have domains and they will tell you all of the horrible things that genetically engineered crops will do, and on the other hand, there is peer-reviewed literature being produced by academic, government, or industry scientists and tested again by independent groups. So when you see independent reproducibility around certain claims, you can then start to put some stock into them. That's why episode 04 of GMO Watch is about the history and misinformation on GMOs! In this episode of GMO Watch  Podcast, my guest, Dr. Kevin Folta is sharing the importance of understanding what is a reliable source when it comes to claims surrounding GMOs and actionable steps you can take right now to educate yourself by finding trustworthy sources to base your opinions off of. Some of the talking points Dr. Kevin Folta and I go over in this episode include: Where you can find reliable and trustworthy sources for information on GMOs. Breaking down the biggest claims against GMOs; how vague claims relate to hysteria. Do GMOs cause cancer? The hype and research behind this claim. The repercussions that false claims against GMOs have on the world and societies that rely heavily on genetically modified crops. Dr. Kevin Folta's own experience with anti-GMO activists. Touching again on food labels and how this might affect buyers’ choices. More than ever we can't trust so much of what we read online and it’s just become fairly normal to not believe stuff and the majority with common sense just aren’t the loudest.
