Originally released: June 14, 2009 In http://nathanoutloud.blogspot.com/2009/06/episode-4-tom-from-ramble-redhead-show.html (episode 4), I discussed the events from the "Rob, Arnie & Dawn Show" on KRXQ in Sacramento, California that started with the May 28th show. In response to that, along with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Kim Pearson from TransYouth Family Allies lead the effort to ensure that KRXQ and Rob & Arnie be held responsible for the words and tone of their show and their follow-up response. Kim Pearson is Executive Director/Co-Founder of http://www.imatyfa.org/ (TransYouth Family Allies) (TYFA) and National Board President of http://community.pflag.org/Page.aspx?pid=380 (PFLAG-TNET). She first directed her energy into GLBT support, advocacy and education as the founder and president of her local PFLAG Chapter when the youngest of her three children came out as lesbian in 2005. Eighteen months later she found herself facilitating that same child's transition to living life as a young man. Fueled by her passion for ensuring respect and equal rights for children like hers she co-founded TYFA, the first and only national organization that supports, educates and advocates exclusively for gender variant and transgender children. In its short history TYFA has provided support to over 100 families, and training to hundreds of GLBT organizations, service professionals and government officials all over the United States. TYFA and their families have been featured on several local/national radio programs, national/regional television and numerous print articles. You can also find TYFA on http://apps.facebook.com/causes/74940?m=cc366e79 (facebook). Originally released: June 08, 2009 Episode 4 features a coming out story and interview with Tom from Ramble Redhead Show. Tom has been doing his podcast for over 4 years and has completed nearly 300 episodes. You can check out all of the podcasts on his website at http://www.rambleredhead.com/ (http://www.rambleredhead.com/). You can also find his podcasts in iTunes. Tom Goss' "Back To Love" is a collection of edgy alt/pop songs that are literally about love—not always romantic love, but the many faces of love. He has built on the success of his first national tour with acclaimed singer/songwriter Eric Himan in 2008, as well as the production and release of his first video, which was featured nationally and eventually rose to #2 on MTV LOGO's The Click List. "I wanted to create something that was instantly accessible," says Goss. "Something that would touch a wide audience, and something that was fast and clean but also carried a concrete message." As a gay man, he wanted to deliver a message about societal and religious perceptions of what love means to a gay person, as well as his family's love and failed love, including the divorce of his parents. Goss also learned a lot from his recently deceased grandfather, whom he says loved his grandmother “more than I have ever seen anyone love.” He adds that “Back To Love” breathes speaks, and aches like nothing I have ever done before.” Goss, who grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin, moved to DC in 2004 to enter Catholic seminary in hopes of becoming a priest. After that didn't go as planned, Goss later found himself through his charity work and through his partner, and began to make music a full-time ambition. His debut, album, Naked Without, was released in 2006 and was followed by Rise in January 2008. Goss plans to hit the road in support of Back To Love, delivering the message of his new album to a wide range of listeners. “I want people to listen to "Back To Love" and leave with a sense of hope and love greater than before,” says Goss. “I want to start conversations about love and loss, anger and forgiveness, hope and fear, but most importantly integration, of self and of each other. And at the same time, I want to deliver the best batch of songs that I possibly could.” You can find more information on Tom's music and concert dates on his website http://www.tomgossmusic.net/ (tomgossmusic.net). "Back to Love" is also available on http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=158289962&uo=6 (iTunes). From that we get “Til the End”. On May 28 radio hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States spent more than 30 minutes making crude and dehumanizing comments promoting child abuse against transgender children. It began when they discussed a story about an Omaha family supporting their transgender child and her transition. After GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued a call to action, the radio station finally called back and promised Rob and Arnie would respond to their offensive segment. GLAAD also spoke with with radio host Dawn Rossi who defended transgender people on the highly problematic segment. On their follow-up show, Rob and Arnie failed to apologize for their remarks. GLAAD re-issued the Call to Action, and LGBT advocates made their voices heard through social networking and thousands of people from around the world contacted KRXQ and their advertisers. After nine advertisers pulled their ads, the radio station finally took notice and they suspended the show until Thursday June 11th. The data from the American Public Media Research Lab shows that African-Americans have made up roughly 27% of COVID-19 deaths, but only 13% of the United States population is black. What is causing this horrific discrepancy? Rashad Robinson, civil rights activist and President of Color of Change,  joined the podcast this week to discuss the impact of coronavirus on black Americans and what his organization is doing to help those in need. In this episode, Sam and Nathan ask Robinson about the problems that African-American populations face during the age of COVID-19, which include inadequate access to healthcare, unfair and racist policing policies, and disparate economic relief from the government. Robinson also discusses his journey of activism, beginning with knocking on doors for political candidates in his early teenage years and ultimately working his way up to leadership within GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. For more information, or if you'd like to continue the conversation, Rashad Robinson can be found on Twitter @rashadrobinson, Color of Change can be found @ColorOfChange, and Nathan can be found @NathanHRubin.

CORRECTION: On this episode of NoCo LIVE, we discuss the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of former basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, his young daughter Gianna, and seven other people in a helicopter crash on Sunday, January 26, 2020. During the course of the conversation, we made references to the notion that Mr. Bryant may have held anti-LGBT views. This information was inaccurate. While it is true that Mr. Bryant made an anti-gay slur in 2011, he later atoned for the mistake, and took action against others who made similar slurs in his presence, receiving praise from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation as well as many other outlets. While NoCo LIVE is first and foremost an entertainment show, it's important to us when we discuss current events to make sure that we get our facts straight, and in this instance, we did not. We regret this error, and will endeavor to do better fact checking in the future. The gang is all here and we kick things off with a deeper dive on TikTok. Charles posted a video that's gone viral and weird commenters come out of the woodwork. KevKat has a hard time dealing with the comments and we talk about the pros and cons of interacting with an audience and why creators should stay out of the comments section. Ironically, we experience this live when a troll briefly joins the Twitch chat on the show and grumpy Chris breaks out the ban hammer. We get deep for a moment as Chris had a death in the family, which also brings us to Kobe Bryant's tragic death, his controversial past, and whether you can separate someone's achievements from their actions and how to feel when someone like that dies. June is #PrideMonth, when the LGBTQ community and its allies, honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City, an event that served as the catalyst for the gay rights movement in the U.S. and around the world. Where’s the connection between Pride and Better Off, besides the lesbian host? This week I chatted with Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Ellis’s story is an interesting one because prior to coming in GLAAD in 2014, she was a lifer in the for-profit world as a media executive. She led national media brands, notably growing Real Simple into one of Time Inc.’s most respected and successful magazines. Her vision also transformed and energized leading media outlets including Vogue, InStyle, New York, and House & Garden. She served as Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Martini Media, a digital firm specializing in online branding, public relations and marketing. Suffice to say there was a bit of an adjustment period, but the numbers don’t lie, and in a relatively short amount of time, things have turned around and only continue to get better. “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment. Grace: I am pleased to be talking with Matt Skallerud today, who is the president of Pink Banana Media. Matt began his online career in May of 1995 with the launch of the website www.GayWired.com. This website became one of the top three LGBT websites worldwide. He has been helping clients reach the LGBT community for more than eighteen years, and in addition to this he is a current board member for Travel Gay Canada and the interim Executive Director of the California Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Also he is actively involved with many key national LGBT organizations, which include the International Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and Out & Equal Workplace Advocates just to name a few. So Matt, I've given the listeners a brief overview of who you are, but why don't you tell us a little bit more about yourself and what your path looked like that led you to where you are today. Matt Skallerud:  Yeah! I always try to simplify things. I've just been very lucky. I went to school, I got my degree in engineering, got really bored with it in about three years and thought to myself, 'I got a degree for this? I don't know if I want to do this for the rest of my life.' And- but I actually went into sales, I was in this kind of high-tech R&D world of lasers and then I went into sales of lasers and the reason I bring all that up is because it was that combination of kind of just being comfortable with technology, and it was a perfect time. It was when computers were just really starting to come out. I used to have a Commodore 64, and then I had some of the first Compaq 286 and all these fun computers but I had the opportunity to really utilize them first for more on the engineering side, but then as things developed more on the sales, and then also very much marketing of products I used to work on in the lab. I basically took all those skills,
