He has written many books about beer and whiskey, check them out on Amazon or Audible. His latest whiskey books are Whiskey Master Class and Tasting Whiskey and he's finishing a third one. Lew Bryson is on the show this week. He's a long-time writer in the beer and whisky space, a voice of reason, and honestly just a force of good and positivity in an otherwise dreary world.I've been fortunate to call Bryson a friend for the better part of 20 years now. As a writer starting off in the beer space he was one of a few that was generous with his time, advice, and expertise. That's not a unique to me experience. Lew has helped so many better understand drinks and culture. He's kind and intelligent with the kind of resume that can only come with being among the very best. He was managing editor of Whisky Advocate magazine for 20 years. He is the author of Tasting Whiskey, and Whiskey Master Class, and writes a column for Craft Spirits Magazine. His work has appeared in countless publications, including a long stint in All About Beer. Bryson is a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of The Order of The Writ, an honorary association of the bourbon industry. He lives in central Pennsylvania, which is the topic of his podcast, “Seen Through A Glass." – a show you should tune into regularly. A few months back we were approached by Rich Colli of Varga Bar to do an event for Philly Beer Week. It was great fun, pouring and talking about whisky and beer. Before all that we sat down at Victory Brewing in Philly, to talk about writing, careers, home bars, and more. Inspired by Lew Bryson's article, “What Stout Has Become Has Led Me Back To Porter,” Beer Sessions Radio will welcome Lew himself and Todd DiMatteo from Good Word Brewing to talk porter and classic English beer in this week's episode. Lew will be sure to ramble about the thorough story of dark beers, and fulfill Jimmy's purpose when inviting him, while Todd will add his perspective as a brewer of the classics. Jimmy kicks off the episode by asking Lew his reasons behind an article about porter. Besides being asked by his boss to do so, Lew reveals quite a few interesting memories he had with porters — and his appreciation for how it made Myrtle beach bearable. Todd also shares his take on porter, before publicly apologizing to Lew for sending him the wrong batch of summer ale. We will then move onto a history of English beers in its own lifetime, as well as within the American craft beer movement.Last but not least, the gang goes deeper into porters and styles, as well as the role of a beer critic in the craft beer industry. Lew shares his thoughts on why people read his writing, before Todd explains why he prefers sending beers to writers for organic marketing. Todd will also share a glimpse into his Little Beer Festival this past April, before the gang come back to the discussion of, "why English beer?" Show notes from host John Holl"A few weeks ago I was in Rochester judging the New York State Beer Competition and on the last day of judging, my pal Lew Bryson walked into the room wearing a shirt that asked: "Got Milktubes?" It was from Human Robot, a Philadelphia brewery that has leaned in hard on its love of lagers. When the brewery opened two years ago in the site of the former St. Benjamin brewing, it didn't get the full splash that it deserved due to the pandemic, but it has slowly built a local and vocal fanbase that stop by for beers and are quick to bend the ear of any beer enthusiast that will listen. Growth is coming quickly to this brewery, as you'll hear from Head Brewer Andrew Foss. We spoke after the company opened its second location and Foss will be heading up brewing at both, focusing on lagers, kettle sours, and juicy IPAs."This Episode is sponsored by:NZ HopsNZ Hops, the co-operative of Master Hop Growers are a passionate collective of farms dedicated to innovation and sustainability. Episode 10! We're bringing out the big guns now (after Michter's, is there such a thing?) Today's episode is with Lew Bryson, longtime spirits and beer writer, author, taster, and all-around great guy. Lew is a literal spirit guide for me - his book Tasting Whiskey kickstarted my whiskey tasting journey, and his follow-up, Whiskey Masterclass, gave the deep dive into each part of the process any serious whiskey lover could want. His blog, Seen Through a Glass, chronicles his journeys through whiskey, beer, and the PLCB, his home state's "evil empire" of liquor sales. This is as fun an episode as I've had yet - I know you'll love it, too. Thank you to Lew for making time to talk - he had to run afterwards (into the other room, but still) to taste the finalists for Fred Minnick's Ascot Awards Whiskey of the Year! Can the flavor of a whiskey reflect the place where it's made? How about the people who produced it? Distillers around the globe are exploring the idea of terroir, experimenting with locally grown heirloom grains, and making barrels from regional species of oak. You can buy bourbon as young as a few years old and as old as 30 years. But what is the perfect age? Our old friend Greg Orth, Master of Flavor, returns for the 7th year in a row for our annual Valentine’s Day-ish tradition. Over the years, Greg – founder of Craft Tastings – has lead us through a wide variety of beer and food pairings. We started with chocolate, then moved on to a much wider array of snacks from bacon to popcorn and beyond. This time around, we come back to chocolate but swap out the beer for whiskey! Greg has been experimenting with using whiskey for his specialty pairing events, and we were more than happy to be his guinea pigs. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne hosted a round of There’s Weird in My…Booze. And, Steph, being out of her comfort zone, channeled our friend Lew Bryson in a Know Your Bourbon segment. After all of that, you will be surprised to learn that we actually remained relatively sober throughout the evening. Like real adults. Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do! Lew Bryson and Martin Duffy take their whisky seriously...but not much else! When they joined us at the recent American Whiskey Convention in Philadelphia, the laughter was a perfect complement to serious whisky discussion about the sources of whisky flavor, the growth of craft distilling, and why our discussion was taking place just feet away from valuable Egyptian artifacts in the University of Pennsylvania Museum. OK, that last part wasn't so serious, but it did help Lew explain how he came to meet legendary whisky writer Michael Jackson for the first time at the Penn Museum. We'll also talk with Dick Stoll, the veteran Pennsylvania distiller who made one of the Holy Grails for whiskey lovers...the 16-year-old A.H. Hirsch Reserve Bourbon. In the news, this was a week that won't go down in history at The Macallan, while Craigellachie is bringing a 51-year-old single malt to New York City - and pour it for free! Four Roses has completed its $55 million expansion project in Kentucky, and Woodford Reserve's Chris Morris has to figure out how to get a special barrel down from one of the historic spires at Churchill Downs in time for the Kentucky Derby.
We are joined by veteran beer and whiskey writer Lew Bryson. We share stories, laughs and hot takes on covering booze. Items of discussion include: - Why Danny loves Lew. - Our admiration of tech writer John C. Dvorak. - Lew's approach to writing about beer and whiskey. - Dealing with Pennsylvania liquor laws. - Comparing to the late 2010's craft beer boom to the 90's. - Well made alcohol is well made alcohol. - Gut reactions to new styles. - Decline in beer sales? - Cannabis beverages. - The death of beer writing. And much more! Would you like to have your brewery or beer related business advertised on this very show? Of course you do. Please drop us a note by clicking this --> link
In episode 22 of the Get Published Podcast, Host and 13-Time Bestselling Author Paul G. Brodie interviews Lew Bryson about his author journey, beer, spirits, and how to create partnerships.
In this episode we returned to the Hulmeville Inn, this time to sit down with long-time, acclaimed beer and whiskey writer Lew Bryson. We discussed Lew’s history with beer and writing, including his past published books and current contributions to The Daily Beast, All About Beer, The Full Pint and more. Plus, his well-known Session Beer Project, thoughts on the PLCB and liquor laws, and much, much more. In the news, Dan reported on the recent lawsuit brought against AB Inbev by Stone Brewing. Plus, we played Libation or Fabrication (with all beer names submitted by our patron James Lamberg) in Happy Fun Time. All the while sipping on a variety on (mostly) Pennsylvania brews.

(Send your questions to questions@experimentalbrew.com) We run off to the pub and discuss feedback abut the potential canning crisis, the unbearable BS of science, the now sold out Pacific Northwest Homebrewers Conference and Hops in Drew's hometown. And then to the lab where the guys launch the next experiment. Is there a detectable difference between adding Olive Oil as an aeration replacement and just not adding any aeration/oxygen at all! We go into the history of the whole Olive Oil excitement and why they think everyone has it a little wrong. With the approach of Session Beer Day - April 7th - we get beer writer extraordinaire and Session Beer Project creator, Lew Bryson on the phone and go through the history of the project, the beer day and what Lew ultimately wants to achieve! In Episode 7 - Denny and Drew take a spin through listener reactions to the first experiment results unleashed online and in the podcast. Then it's off to the pub where they discuss the rise of homebrewing around the globe (focused on an article about Indian homebrewers), Denny wields the eraser of correction about the beers he tried from Barrel of Monks and Drew talks up Lew Bryson's Session Beer Day project. And then to the lab where the guys launch the next experiment - all about the First Wort Hop. This time out the crew is set on re-creating Denny's classic experiment that yielded inconclusive results about FWH. Ignore the recipe content in the podcast because the IGORs asked for a recipe change and who are the guys to deny them that? Once again, hoppy times are brought to you by NikoBrew.com! Time to announce the podcast's first charity project - Freedom Service Dogs of America. They're dedicated to rescuing and training shelter dogs to serve as support animals for the disabled, including returning vets. Join the podcast as a Patreon supporter to help rescue some pups! Back to the Bay Area for one last time as the gang returns to Faction Brewing in Alameda and the wide ranging Rodger Davis. We clarify (maybe) Rodger's dry hopping procedure for his infinitely hoppy beers. The guys talk through a bunch of other things like the love/not love of fork lifts, his team - the genesis of the White Stout style (found the culprit!) and his experimental hop series. (WARNING - Rodger is also prolific with his utterances and we're still working out where the line is and whether or not we caught them all - so be careful in this segment with the kids if you don't want them learning some words!) Finally Denny and Drew take your questions. Quick announcement about questions - looks like every 10th episode, the show will become an all (mostly?) Q&A show - so get your questions in and see how long you can make D&D answer questions! Denny takes a tip from Jeff Gladish about blending and Drew recommends a few new choice selections for your reading library (of non-beery things) So, are you guys psyched to get your First Wort Hop on? Join me and we will talk about how to get yourself ready for year end events. He has traveled the world tasting whiskey, and has acquired an uncommon breadth of knowledge and a full-spectrum experience of international whiskies. In TASTING WHISKEY, he shares his passion for whiskey in a fun, approachable guide designed to enrich and educate readers as they embark on their own whiskey journeys. On this episode of Snacky Tunes, host Darin Bresnitz talks with Wen-Jay Ying & Kris Delatorre of The Local Roots NYC. They’re organizing and hosting The Good Festival, a biennial party that celebrates one-of-a-kind local music and food initiatives. It inspires New Yorkers to make, cook, and do right in their own kitchens and backyards. Throughout the night, bands will perform as artisans and urban gardeners share their skills between bands’ sets. It’s a celebration music. dance and food. The festival is taking place October 11th at Friends & Lovers. In the second half of the show, Darin talks to Lew Bryson, Managing Editor of Whisky Advocate. They discuss the widespread knowledge of beer and the over-saturation of breweries all over the country. WhiskyFest is a festival that Whisky Advocate organizes. It offers people the opportunity to taste from a selection of more than 300 whiskies from around the world; many of them rare and exclusive. On October 29th ,WhiskyFest is going to celebrate it’s 40th year. Musical guest for the day is Toy Cities, a post punk Indie Rock band based in Brooklyn. This program was brought to you by The International Culinary Center. “It’s an intimate night,, everyone is super excited, they’re experiencing something new. I think the people that go for the bands, generally don’t know their interest about being more sustainable and this is a really nice introduction to them. On the other side, the people who come for the local food systems, they may not be aware about all these amazing bands living in their neighborhoods.” [8:00] “There will be a chef in the back yard making ice cream fills, carmel donuts…that in itself is how our festival’s different.” [9:30] —Wen-Jay Ying on Snacky Tunes “John Hansell, editor and publisher of the magazine, tells this story and well to be honestly after sitting down with him and drinking, I’ve come to the realization that he’s telling the truth…it came to him in a dream.” [22:30] “You go over there and ask for the stuff under the counter. I got to tell you, that’s the best part about whiskyFest, somebody always brings something like….here try this.” [27:30] —Lew Bryson on Snacky Tunes
Today marks Belgium’s King’s Day holiday and Beer Sessions Radio celebrates the country and it’s beer with a Coast 2 Coast Toast with Wendy Littlefield and Don Feinberg of Vanberg & DeWulf, the premier Belgian importers. They talk about bringing Belgium beer, such as the Saison, back from near extinction as well importing Duvel, lambics, and trappist beers. But first, the couple behind Brooklyn Brew Shop, Erica Shea and Stephen Valand, join in at the studio to explain how they came up with their book The Beer Making Book, which contains over 52 different varieties of DIY small batch brews anyone can make in the comfort of their home or even small apartment. Tune in later as Lew Bryson calls in to share his Belgian beer stories from back in the day. This episode is sponsored by GreatBrewers.com.
