Their mission is to share the unique stories of this extraordinary group of women with the audience. The podcast plans to focus on who they are, where they come from, and where they are heading.Professor Kay Wilhelm is Professor of Psychiatry at University of Notre Dame Sydney, Conjoint Professor in Psychiatry and Mental Health UNSW and Consultant in Liaison Psychiatry at St Vincent's Hospital. After completing Higher Specialist Training in 2011 she worked within community and inpatient psychiatric services before taking up her post with a Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team in 2016. Dr Brown is an Educational Supervisor for core psychiatric trainees as well as being a Clinical Supervisor for both core and higher trainees in psychiatry. She has been involved in undergraduate teaching of medical students, service development with the introduction of skills training to her local NHS health board and has ongoing research involvement with a pilot study examining the effectiveness of the ketogenic diet on the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Dr Brown's main area of interest relates to the field of Metabolic Psychiatry. She is a Nutrition Network Advisor and recommends therapeutic carbohydrate restriction for the treatment of mental disorder. Other interests include food addiction and optimisation of gut health for the improvement of mental health. Dr Brown believes in holistic medical care and addressing root cause of illness. She believes there is a better way for the practice of psychiatry, that relies less on pharmaceuticals and more on addressing underlying metabolic and environmental causes of mental illness. Dr Brown has grown weary of the simplistic pharma-focused standard psychiatric approach to patients and after improving her own health by implementing dietary strategies of paleo, then keto and ultimately a carnivore diet, Dr Brown is a passionate advocate for the beneficial impact of proper nutrition on overall health, with the aim of addressing the root cause of illness, not simply masking symptoms. In July 2022 Dr Brown released her first book titled: “Metabolic Madness.” The subject of the book is the relationship between metabolic health and mental disorder and the book is designed to make the complex science behind this topic accessible to the everyday reader.   Find Dr. Brown IG: @carnivoreshrink Linktree: https://linktr.ee/carnivoreshrink?fbclid=PAAaYSpshNpkqAgFt5FlMHQu9znTcKdJaj-LcQr9BcyPpbsR_6h8Yp4y36SKk Book Metabolic Madness https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B6HNTNXY/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_N9ADDBGGRN3JHNHHXCXG Website https://foodforthoughtpsychiatrist.com/   And special thank you to the sponsor of this episode, The Carnivore Bar! Dr. Song Chan is a consultant psychiatrist, currently working in consult liaison in Middlemore Hospital. He was born in Hong Kong, raised in Tāmaki Makaurau, where he completed medical school and psychiatry training. He is also the co-director of psychiatry training in the Northern Region of Aotearoa since 2020. Some of his passions include educating and improving the mental wellbeing of Chinese individuals. Outside of work, he is obsessed with traveling and enjoying the spoils of new countries. In this episode, we discuss his work in consult liaison - where mental and physical health intertwine - gender stereotyping and implicit biases in psychiatry, COVID-19 and the challenges imposed on mental health, stigma in Chinese communities on mental health, and structural biases against non-English speaking patients. We touch on the topic of aged care facilities, but most of all, discuss his love for psychiatry and what potential applicants for psychiatry training need to demonstrate. As always, if you have any feedback or queries, or if you would like to get in touch with the speaker, feel free to get in touch at doctornos@pm.me.Audio credit:Bliss by Luke Bergs https://soundcloud.com/bergscloudCreative Commons — Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported — CC BY-SA 3.0Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/33DJFs9Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/e9aXhBQDT9YSupport the show

SIM has been described by its proponents as an innovative mental health workforce transformation model that brings together the police and community mental health services, to better support 'high intensity users' of Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and public services. However, the roll-out of the model has caused deep concerns within the social work profession and beyond. Warnings have been raised that the model is based on coercion and denial of potentially life-saving support, and is causing some service-users to live in fear of arrest or prosecution when they are in mental health crisis. For information on #StopSIM Coalition, visit https://stopsim.co.ukTo access the BASW England Mental Health Special Interest Group statement of SIM, visit https://bit.ly/3pw8MZeTo access the Royal College of Psychiatrists statement discussed during the episode, visit https://bit.ly/3Hz8HtV See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today's storyteller is Dr Carol Silberberg! She's a consultation-liaison psychiatrist living in Melbourne, Australia. I met Carol through HB5 - which is the 5th cohort of Homeward Bound - and it was really great to have her on for a one on one conversation. So, today we talk about a LOT of topics, including about her career, what drew her to medicine in the first place, choosing a path in life, how one transports a cello from Canada to Australia, doctors orchestras, Homeward Bound, education in Australia, and gender balances in our respective fields. It's really hard to title these episodes sometimes because the blip of a title never fully captures the whole episode! I titled it as I did because I couldn't list everything we talk about (I never can) - so enjoy the conversation! --- You can find Rachel Villani on Twitter @flyingcypress and Storytellers of STEMM on Facebook and on the shiny new Twitter account @storytellers42. She explains the impact of COVID on mental health and mental illness, particularly in relation to stress, anxiety and other risk factors. She also outlines the impact of the loss of protective factors such as friends and community. Dr Doherty also outlines how mental health and inequality interact, in homelessness for example, and how a home is a secure base that enables stability. Finally Dr Doherty explains the need for a significant increase in investment in public mental health services, and how we can get help by reaching out to those around us. What’s going on!? When will this madness end? Why have I become this jittery hand-washing, food-hoarding, news-obsessed recluse? Will someone please explain? The world has become a weird, weird place. Aaron sits down with Gira, a Mental Health Counsellor and author of one of the most sensible pieces of writing on Covid-19 to date. A breath of fresh air in the blizzard of tiresome memes and terrifying news reports. Smart, non-nonsense Gira is a rare and reassuring voice of reason. Kill the fear. Stop the spiral. Focus on the facts and only the facts. It’s all about putting things into perspective. Stay safe, stay calm. Peace out. ABOUT GIRA Gira started working as a Mental Health Counsellor at OT&P in October 2014. She graduated in 1999 from Leeds University Medical School, UK, and is a qualified, registered psychiatrist in the UK but not registered in Hong Kong.
