That we are the "bride of Christ", this thought can get us confused and uneasy, as in "why would He want to have anything to do with me?" Chad once again meditates on these encouraging scriptures. When we are in trouble, we cling to God's love. As this episode is being uploaded, our beloved Lutheran brother Kris Lewis lies in a coma in California after suffering a severe stroke. If our faith left out the glorious love of the Bridegrrom, the lover of our soul, we would give in to despair. But no, we are loved now and into eternity, and loved so deeply that God would call us His bride. We cannot lose, when are hope is in Christ. The talented Marvelle Figueroa sings "My Perfect One". Scripture - Luke 19:1-10, Romans 6:23, Romans 12:2, Titus 2:13-14 “Inner Healing” Today's teaching is on the familiar story of Zacchaeus, but come along with us as we discover some new insights. Zacchaeus was a very wealthy chief tax collector. Tax collectors were despised by people for their greed, for cheating people out of more than what was owed and they were considered to be traitors. Matthew, one of Jesus' disciples, had also been a tax collector. This makes one wonder if Matthew and Zacchaeus had known each other professionally… Was Zacchaeus curious about Jesus because Matthew had talked about Him? Was Zacchaeus curious to learn more about this Jesus person who had changed Matthew's life? Zacchaeus was a short man and was unable to see over the crowd gathered around Jesus, so he ran ahead and climbed up a sycamore fig tree and from there he could see Jesus coming. Zaccheaus wanted to see Jesus, BUT what he didn't realize is that Jesus wanted to see him! Our Lord is one who seeks people out. That day He wanted to show Zacchaeus His incredible love, His great mercy and His life-changing power. And still today, Jesus desires to seek us out too and show us all that He showed Zacchaeus that day. Jesus calls Zacchaeus down from the tree and tells him He's staying at his house. Zacchaeus comes down from the tree and gladly welcomes Jesus to his home. What was going through Zacchaeus' mind? How did He know my name? Did Matthew tip Him off? Was he feeling shock that Jesus was speaking directly to him? Was he wondering why he was singled out? We aren't told about the conversation Jesus and Zacchaeus had, we don't know how long Jesus stayed, what they eat, or how many others were there. All that Luke shares is this, the part that really matters: “But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.'” Luke 19:8-10 Jesus came to seek and to save the lost….Such beautiful and powerful words! He came to save us from our sin. Through belief in Him, we receive life forever with Him. Jesus came to: 1. Save us from sin's punishment (sin brings death - sin must be paid for - “for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23). The blood of Jesus pays for our sin. 2. Save us from sin's grip - Just what we see with Zacchaeus - a man in the grip of greed - and Jesus broke that grip. Jesus can and will brake whatever has a grip on our lives. Zacchaeus' story assures us of Jesus' desire to give us inner healing. Jesus frees us from sin's punishment, but also has the power to free us from sin's grip. We will never be perfect, the only Perfect One is Jesus, but there is to be progress in our lives because through Christ we are no longer under the control of sin. Biblical Truths found in this story: AGREEMENT - Zacchaeus agreed with what Jesus told him. Zacchaeus agreed Jesus came to seek and to save him. When we receive Jesus by faith we are changed people, just like Zacchaeus. We have passed from death to life and are no longer controlled by the flesh. Instead we are living by the Spirit. He gives us the power to be changed by Him. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” There is a battle raging in us between the Spirit of God and the old nature, but there is power that we can find when in AGREEMENT with who Jesus is and what He says. ACTIVITY - Zacchaeus engaged in godly activity - he acted immediately after hearing Jesus - not after thinking about it for a while - but immediately! He gave 1/2 of all he had to the poor and for those he cheated he said he'd restore them four-fold. God calls us to godly activity when we believe in Jesus as our Savior. And our faith calls forth action. Examples: ⁃ Rejoice in the Lord always (Philippians 4:4) ⁃ Let love be genuine (Romans 12:9) ⁃ Don't let the sun go down on your anger (Ephesians 4:26) ⁃ Be kind and considerate (Philippians 2:3-4) ⁃ Be gentle (Philippians 4:5) Real faith acts! We are not saved because of our actions, but because we are saved, our actions change. ATTITUDE - Zacchaeus has a great attitude and is zealous to do what is right. He was eager to do what is good. Titus 2:13-14 “while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” This needs to be our attitude - “eager to do what is good.” We are to have an attitude that says “Lord, here am I, use me, send me. I gladly and eagerly will do what you've called me to do.” The Bible does not tell us the rest of the story…. But what we DO know is that Jesus came to seek out Zacchaeus that day. We know that Zacchaeus was a changed man that day. And we know that Jesus seeks us out too and His desire is to change us, and to do a work in us. Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25, Micah 6:8 Being in the Scripture is a great place to be because God DOES speak in His Word, both 2,000 years ago and today! Today's text from the Bible is a powerful Word, a life-changing Word… Matthew tells the Christmas story from the vantage point of Joseph, who after finding out about Mary being pregnant decided to divorce her quietly, but… Joseph receives a visit by an angel in a dream and the angel tells him that he is not to divorce Mary, that she is pregnant by the Holy Spirit, and that he is to name the child Jesus because He will save His people from their sins. Following the dream, Joseph stays engaged to Mary, doesn't consummate the marriage until after Jesus' birth, and he names the baby, Jesus. A virgin birth is implausible if there is no god. But there IS a god! He is the God who reveals Himself in the Scripture and through His Holy Spirit and like in today's reading, through angelic beings. What prophets predicted, is fulfilled in the Person of Jesus of Nazareth. Immanuel: God with us. Fully human: suffers as our substitute for our sin Fully God: eternal redemption by His blood Apart from Christ our lives hold no hope. No matter how good we are it's not good enough. We cannot save ourselves for we have all sinned and we need the Perfect One to save us. Apart from Jesus - nice guys finish last. With Jesus there is life, forgiveness, peace, strength, joy, hope and the assurance we will live forever with Him. Today's Bible story still speaks powerfully to us today. God revealed the identity of Jesus to Joseph - and for us God is still speaking and revealing His identity to each of us through Joseph's story. In Joseph we see an example of what a godly person ought to be: ⁃ Our faith is based on the truth that God has revealed to us in His Word ⁃ Our faith is more than head knowledge ⁃ Our faith informs our behavior Joseph's example: ⁃ Faithful to God's Word and wanted to live for God. He knew God is to be trusted, honored and obeyed. ⁃ Merciful in a culture that looked at Mary's pregnancy as a disgrace, that recommended a public divorce, Joseph did not want to humiliate Mary. ⁃ Obedient to what God revealed in his dream and also obedient to the Word in the Bible of “the virgin will conceive and bare a son” and so he took her as his wife. ⁃ Courageous individual who put family first and God over all. An individual who did what God told him to do despite pushback and persecution. He understood that it is more important to follow God than to worry about public opinion. Joseph wasn't saved because he was a good man. He was a good man because He was saved. So we too are encouraged to live lives as a response to the incredible gift of the grace and goodness of God in Christ. Micah 6:8 says: He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. May we exhibit that kind of a life-style in response to the revelation of who our Lord Jesus Christ is. Brothers and sisters, today's topic of Treasures for the Soul is “Each one of us is the Lord's most unique and perfect one.” We are in the Lord's eternal will and love dream. In the Song of Solomon, the Lord praises us that we are beautiful, without a flaw. It's also written that we are the most beautiful. We affect Him to a point that He even said: Turn away your eyes from me… (Song 6:5) Furthermore, the Lord calls us the perfect one. The Song of Solomon chapter 5 writes about the fall of the believer. Even when the believer was weak and not in condition, the Lord still called her His perfect one. In chapter 6, the believer is regarded as the perfect one, as well as “the only one.” (Song 6:9) By referring to her as “The only one of her mother”, it shows that she is unique. Indeed, each one of us is very unique.

Being able to go through Christ is such a blessing is because it's no longer about you or me being perfect, we can now go through Christ who IS perfect. Through Jesus' ultimate grace, we who are imperfect can go through the Perfect One. The results will be what they need to be for that moment and that time! Philippians 4:13 tells us that we can do all things through Christ.Anything that needs to be accomplished, from the desires God has placed in your heart as a seed, to the assignment that you have to shine your light in the world, now can go through Christ and be perfected to God's specifications. Senator Josh Hawley just flat out unloaded on the Turtle, Mitch McConnell in an interview with www.heartlandernews.com questioning why the 82 year old can't quit today instead of November. This is an epic beat down and of course, Josh Hawley is right again. Trump and Biden visit the border for two different stories. One-on-one meetings are the cornerstone of manager-employee relationships. For managers, they're an opportunity to teach, coach, and mentor. For employees, they're a chance to grow and develop. But given how important these meetings are, how well are we using them? How effectively do we plan and run them? Bottom line - are they an afterthought or a priority? John 13:12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 "Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 "I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.' In this very familiar passage of Scripture, we see Jesus having set the example for Servant Leadership in the first eleven verses asking them if they know what He has done. Then He explains what He has done and why He did it. Jesus says Most Assuredly (i.e.; Listen Up What I am about to say is very Important). He says that if He the Lord and God who created everything washed their dirty nasty feet, then what ought they to do? Jesus is saying that we ought to do whatever it takes to help others become who they ought to be in Christ. That we are to help everyone in spite of what they look like, smell like, talk like, act like, or anything else that we may not like about them. Jesus says a blessing comes not by knowing what you ought to do, but by doing the very thing we most dislike doing sometimes, helping others who are not like us. Mt 25:40 "And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.' He also tells them about Judas who has betrayed Him even after having fellowship with Him. And, thirdly, is humility in verses twelve to seventeen. 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 "You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. Jesus says you say I am the Teacher and the Lord, in other words I have a great authority over you and others and if I in great authority do this to you, what ought you to do. 14 "If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Like as I have –in the same manner – means do whatever it takes to serve other people – Stands for self-sacrificing service for the Lord. Not to do the same thing I have done, but to serve as I have. 1Pe 5:5 ¶ Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 16 "Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. Jesus want you to wash His feet today by serving His People, Humility involves serving others, not just the Lord Pride will keep you from doing so. Joy comes not just from learning about humility, but by demonstrating it Jesus wants to wash your feet today but your pride will stop you from letting Him do so. Jesus' demonstration of serving His disciples was more than a demonstration. It was really a call to service. You my brothers were called to be free but do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature. Rather serve one another in love. And he pointed out that people talk about, "I have freedom in Christ to do this and to do that” and most of the time they're saying, "I'm free to do whatever pleases my flesh." But Galatians says our freedom in Christ is designed so that in love we can serve one another. Jesus and Judas, the epitomes of opposites. The Perfect One and the absolutely imperfect. The best and the worst. The absolutely perfect and the absolutely wretched. Jesus and Judas. And by contrast here the purity of Jesus, and the depravity of Judas become very, very obvious. The perfect one and the polluted one The Son of God and the Son of Perdition The blessed one and the cursed one The Holy One and the Hellish one We come to the confrontation as it comes head to head between Jesus and Judas. The name Judas itself bears a kind of a stigma which burns within us. He who betrayed the Son of God with a kiss has become the most despised person in the annals of human history. His personality is the darkest on the chronicle of the world. And in this passage, we see the blackness of Judas contrasted with the absolute pure whiteness of Jesus Christ. Jesus and Judas come head to head at this point, the deed which has been festering in the heart of Judas, and which he has begun to perpetrate is now pushed to its climax and Judas is exposed as the betrayer. Well, there's no question about the fact that the man was an ultimate tragedy. He was probably the greatest tragedy that ever lived, because he is the perfect and prime example of what it means to have opportunity and then lose it. He is the greatest example of lost opportunity the world ever saw. Three years, he moved and walked with Jesus. And ended in absolute disaster. He initially shared the same hope of a kingdom that the other disciples shared. He likely believed that Jesus was the One who was going to bring it off. He, too, after all, had left all and followed Jesus. And it's obvious that he initially didn't join the apostles for the money involved because they never really did have anything. Certainly along the line he became greedy, but perhaps his motive on the outset was just to get in on this kingdom that Jesus would bring. Whatever was his character at the beginning, it was a gradual process that turned him into the treacherous man that he was, a man who had no thought for anybody but himself, a man who finally only wanted to get as much money as he could and get out. Strangely enough, he followed the same Christ as the others, for three years. Just think about that. For three years, day in and day out, he occupied himself with Jesus Christ. He saw the same miracles, he heard the same words, he performed some of the same ministries, he was esteemed in the same way the other disciples were esteemed, yet he did not become what the others became. In fact, he became the very opposite. He was the cleverest hypocrite that we ever read about in the Scriptures. Nobody ever suspected it. And while they were growing into true apostle-saints of God, he was progressively forming into a vile, calculating tool of Satan. And as we come to the thirteenth Chapter of John, Satan literally enters right inside Judas. That's how prepared he is to do Satan's bidding. And when you look at the life of Judas, he becomes all the more terrible because of the glorious beginnings which he had. But greed, ambition, worldliness crept into his heart and avarice became his besetting sin. The failure to struggle with his own temptation, the disappointment that he had about every expectation of an earthly kingdom, the intolerable and unbearable rebuke of the presence of Christ. Just imagine that. Walking around all the time with sinless purity, while you were infested with vileness as Judas was. The sense, too, that perhaps the eye of the master was beginning to see who he was, and what he was. All of these things really began to eat away at him. And by the time we come to John 13, he's ready to do anything. A few days before this in Bethany, he perpetrated his dirty deed by meeting with the leaders of Israel and bargaining for thirty pieces of silver, something around twenty to twenty-five dollars. The price of a slave was thirty pieces of silver. And Judas has already begun the deed, but now it comes to full fruition on the eve of the crucifixion. 18 "I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.' Prophesied in Ps 41:9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. The idea of the heel lifted up, is the idea of brutal violence. It is the brutal kind of violence designated by the lifting of a heel and driving the heel into the neck of the individual. A neck-breaking heel. And that's the picture of Judas, brutal. Having wounded his enemy, lying on the ground, he takes the giant heel and crushes his neck. Now, we realize one thing, a little footnote before we look at verse 18. We realize one thing, that unless Jesus in some way prepares the disciples for what is about to happen, it could affect them very, very seriously. For example, if Judas rises up all of a sudden and betrays Jesus, right out of the blue, the disciples may conclude that Jesus wasn't all He claimed to be, or He would have known that Judas was like this, and He never would have chosen him. Jesus wants to be sure that they don't think He is going to be surprised by what Judas does. Because that could be the loss of their faith. And so, to show them that Jesus is no surprise victim, that whatever happens, He knows about it, and it is all in the plan of God, He says what He says in verse 18. And what He says here is that even the betrayal of Judas has a divine origin. It fits into the master plan of God. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is not surprising his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will correspond to their actions In the ancient Jewish (and perhaps more broadly, the Near Eastern) culture, inviting a man into one's home and to his table was a most significant act. If the host made such commitments to his guest(s), one would expect the guest to reciprocate in some way. And yet the one who sat at our Lord's table and ate His bread actually betrayed Him. What a horrible thing Judas is about to do to His Master, and immediately after eating His bread. To share a meal with guests was to offer them not only provisions, but protection. You remember that David had a bad son. His name was Absalom. And Absalom decided to start a rebellion and to overthrow his father and take over the throne. Now David had a counselor and a friend named Ahithophel. But Ahithophel turned against David, joined Absalom's rebellion. And here in Psalm 41 David is saying this of Ahithophel. "You mine own familiar friend whom I trusted, you've eaten bread with me, close fellowship, you've turned and taken your heel against me." That picture of David and Ahithophel is fulfilled in a greater sense in Jesus and Judas. Jesus, the greater David, Judas, the greater Ahithophel. Over in Psalm 55, we see another prophecy, clearly a prophecy of Judas and his betrayal. Psalm 55:12. Listen to how this describes Judas. "For it was not an enemy that reproached me, then I could have borne it." Imagine Jesus speaking these words. "Neither was it he that hated me who did magnify himself against me. Then I would have hidden myself from him. But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, my familiar friend. We took sweet counsel together, walked unto the house of God in company." Now verse 20. "He has put forth his hands against such as are at peace with him; he hath broken his covenant. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. Over in Zechariah, next to the last book in the Old Testament, and in the eleventh chapter even more detail is given about the betrayal of Christ by Judas. In fact it even gives the exact price. Right as exactly you see it in the New Testament. Zechariah 11:12: "And I said unto them, 'If ye think good, give me my price.'" And this is Judas talking. Prophetically, this is Judas talking to the Jewish leaders. "'If you think good, give me my price, and if not forbear.' So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said unto me, 'Cast it unto the potter, a lordly price that I was prized at of them.' And I took the thirty pieces of silver and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord." And you know what Judas did after the death of Jesus Christ? He took the thirty pieces right back to the house of the Lord, threw them down. The thirty pieces were picked up, Matthew 27 says, they took them out and bought a potter's field, exactly, to the letter, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah 11. And there's a picture of Judas. Long before Judas was ever born, his hatred of Jesus Christ was master planned by divine authorship into the activity of the cross. Jesus choosing Judas was no accident. In John 17:12, listen to this, Jesus says to the Father, "While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name," talking about his disciples. "Those that thou gave Me I have kept and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition," that's Judas, "that the Scripture might be fulfilled.” Judas didn't surprise Jesus one bit. He knew every move Judas ever made. It was predestined in the plan of God from eternity past. It was woven into the prophecy of the Old Testament at least three places as clearly as it could possibly be there. Now may I add quickly this statement: Judas' part was not apart from Judas' own will. Even though God master planned it, even though it was of divine origin that Judas would fit into the body of the twelve, and betray Christ. Yet it was not apart from the desire of Judas. Judas was no robot. The idea that our Lord simply allocated to an unwilling Judas the part of the villain in the crucifixion is inconsistent with Jesus Christ. And it's inconsistent with the constant rebukes Jesus gives to Judas. All the way along the ministry of Jesus, he rebukes Judas. He endeavors to drive him to repentance, time and time again. And so we conclude that even though Judas' treachery fit into the plan of God, God did not design him as a treacherous man. That he became by his own choice. God merely designed his treachery into His plan. He didn't design the treachery. Isn't it marvelous, again we come to the Old Testament principle that says this: "You meant it for evil, but I meant it for good." And God again took the wrath of Judas, to praise Him. And through the deed that Judas did, brought salvation. I think also there are other reasons why Jesus chose Judas. As I analyze the life of Judas, there are so many profound lessons that we learn from Judas. What are they? Number one, we learn that Judas fit in as part of redemptive planning. We learned that God can use anything in His plan. And as I said He takes the wretch to praise Him. Then I think Judas was chosen because he became an impartial witness to Christ. It's one thing for John the Baptist to witness to Christ and all the apostles and all the people who believed in Him, but do you know one of the greatest witnesses that's ever been given in the history of the world, was given by Judas? Judas, if he could have found one thing wrong with Jesus Christ would have played it up to the skies, wouldn't he? If Judas could have found one error in Jesus Christ, he would have seized on it and capitalized on it. If Judas could have found one thing wrong at all, he would have blown it all over the place. Do you know what Judas said? His dying words were these, "I have betrayed innocent blood." That's one of the greatest testimonies to the truth of Jesus Christ that any man ever gave. And he was an impartial witness. He was biased the other way. Another lesson I think that Judas teaches us is that he gives us the opportunity to uncover the awfulness of sin. Sin is never as black as it is in the life of Judas. The blackest kind of sin. And to really understand the cross, you have to see a Judas, because then you know what that cross can accomplish in forgiving that kind of sin. Then also I think that Judas and his life of treachery teaches us to supply sinners with a solemn warning. We ought to learn from the example of Judas, my friend. You ought to learn that you can be very near to God, very near to Jesus Christ, and yet be lost and damned forever. Nobody ever got closer in this world than the twelve. And Judas was one of them. And he's in hell today. Fifthly, I think the story of Judas teaches another lesson. It teaches us that there will be hypocrites among the brethren. You know something, Judas wasn't deceived, did you know that? He was a fake, that's all. He posed as a believer. And he was good at it. He was the best. And mark it, wherever God's work is done, there are hypocrites. Satan always uses them. Another lesson that I think we learn from Judas is the fact that the devil is at work among the Lord's people. Here they are gathered around at the table, the last supper, and moving among them is Satan himself. Be sure of it friends, it's true. Many lessons from the life of Judas. Wherever God's work is done Satan will be there. First of all, Jesus says that it was all in God's plan, that He was not being taken by surprise. And so we see the divine origin of the betrayal. John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Have you trusted Him as your Savior? He can Save you if You ask Him based on His death, burial, and resurrection for your sins. Believe in Him for forgiveness of your sins today. hisloveministries.podbean.com #HLMSocial hisloveministries.net https://www.instagram.com/hisloveministries1/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/His-Love-Ministries-246606668725869/?tn-str=k*F https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/110230052184687338/charity/145555 “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” -John 8:32 The world is trying to solve earthly problems that can only be solved with heavenly solutions.

Today's show title comes from a statement Cinthia found herself making to her husband when he lamented having accidentally dropped a suitcase on her foot while trying to accomplish a project perfectly. She recognized the statement to be much like what God says to those of us who struggle with perfectionism: He is perfect. He wants us. Any perfection we pursue that doesn't come from Him will only deceive us. Sometimes we think of perfectionism as a noble weakness, one we can describe with false self-deprecation when asked to identify our limitations in a job interview. As Christians, we may even think of our perfectionism as spiritually positive, citing verses such as, “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father as perfect” (Matthew 5:48, ESV). But perfectionism does not lead us to the kind of holiness God desires for us because our perfectionism is not about God; it's about us. It's our own pursuit of being enough, hiding from the shame that threatens us, making ourselves superior to what we fear we could become. It may mimic the pursuit of what comes from heaven, but perfectionism is, as Cinthia says today, actually very sinful and “straight from the pit of hell.” If this sounds shocking, hang in there --- It actually gets pretty freeing. But that freedom comes with dying to perfectionism. Perfectionism is egregious to God because only He is perfect. When we who do not even know what perfection is try to accomplish it in ourselves, it brings death. God made us, and He said that what He made was very good. But God's enemy, the enemy of our souls – Satan – wanted to be like God. He wanted to exalt himself to perfection out of pride, and he tempts us to do the same. He tempted Eve with the same prospect – that of becoming like God – and when she believed the fruit would lead her to this, the human race ironically lost the perfection with which it had been made. We have been trying to get it back ever since then, trying to do for ourselves what only the blood of Jesus can accomplish. So what is the difference between pursuing excellence, which is a good thing, and perfectionism? Well, to start, perfectionism has trouble distinguishing when perfection matters and when it does not. If a doctor is performing an operation on another human being, that doctor should try to do it perfectly (though, of course, human limitations will still exist). But perfectionists often feel driven to be (or require others to be) perfect in less-crucial areas of life. Perfectionists can spend wildly disproportionate amounts of time, energy, and other resources trying to achieve perfection in things that really do not warrant that level of devotion, and sometimes even on what is trivial. Here are some other differences between perfectionism and the pursuit of excellence: -Pursuing excellence involves setting challenging but achievable goals and feeling satisfied when they are achieved. Perfectionism involves setting impossible goals and feeling crushed when they are not achieved. -Those who pursue excellence may feel disappointment when they make mistakes, but perfectionists tend to become consumed with their mistakes. -The pursuit of excellence is motivated by the potential for success and happiness, but perfectionism is motivated by fear of failure, rejection, or criticism; perfectionists can be very susceptible to these things and can spend their whole lives trying to outrun them. -The pursuit of excellence allows for satisfaction in having worked hard and accepting some results as being “good enough,” but perfection operates in extremes (e.g., success vs. failure) and leads to exhaustion and an inability to appreciate what God is doing in the moment. Perfectionism operates in the realm of ego and self-esteem, constantly holding out the fear, “I'm never going to make it,” which turns out to be true. The cost of perfectionism is high. Perfectionism can lead us to have difficulty making decisions, to stop trying because we fear failing, and to constantly second-guess ourselves and regret our decisions. It undermines our opportunities to learn because learning is not perfection. It requires constant striving, which leads to exhaustion, and that leads to inaccurate self-perception. Perfectionism contributes to procrastination from lack of confidence and a tendency to make things bigger than they are, as well as stress, anxiety, and depression. Perfectionism is a personality trait that can be caused by both environmental factors (e.g., overly critical parents) and biological factors (e.g., genetics). But perfectionism can be changed, and it should be. Remember, if our intentions were to adore God's perfection and follow Him as He re-creates it in us, He would love that. But perfectionism does not lead us to seek God; it can even lead us to avoid Him or see Him as being perfectionistic like we are instead of truly perfect as He is. Perfectionism causes us to seek and be obsessed with our own ideas of perfection, and these are warped, fallen. While true perfection is found only in God, the One Who knows about our imperfections and Who alone can help us, perfectionism comes from the enemy. Perfectionism does not align us with what God is doing, and the obsession it creates with self-blame aligns us, instead, with our enemy. We need to know who our real enemy: Satan is a liar, and he is brilliant. Satan fell because he wanted to be like God (Isaiah 14:12-17), and he hates everything that can be more of what God wants. He is our enemy because He is God's enemy. John 8:44 tells us that Satan is a liar and the father of lies, and that, when he lies, he speaks out of his own character. He was “a murderer from the beginning.” I Peter 5:8 describes him as our “adversary the devil” who “prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.” Jesus called Satan “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31; John 16:11), and II Corinthians 4:4 calls him “the god of this world.” During the episode Cinthia cites an article called “Satan's Ten Strategies Against You” which states that it is Satan's aim to use both pain and pleasure to blind and deceive us. He masquerades in costumes of light and righteousness. He is very beguiling. He loves to represent good as evil and evil as good. With all of this, though, God is sovereign over Satan. Satan is on a leash. In Job he is described as having to get God's permission to attack Job (Job 1&2), and he had to ask to “sift” Peter like wheat (Luke 22:31). Revelation 20:10 speaks of the judgment God will execute on Satan, the deceiver. God intends our lives on earth to be a “good fight” against hell by those of us who refuse to be a part of Satan's dominion, but you cannot fight Satan with your own perfectionism. It plays right into his strategies. Instead, you have to get serious about not condemning yourself. Your adversary is way bigger than you are, and you can only fight him by the blood of Jesus. Your sins are God's problem, and He has already accomplished your redemption and forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. He will help you through the consequences that occur on earth as a result of your sin, not harm you. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Revelation 12:11 describes those who will “have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.” So what does our fight look like? Sometimes it looks like stopping yourself in the midst of a struggle and asking, “Is this a fight that God has asked me to be in? Is he putting me in a position to fight with the enemy on this one?” If it is, He will provide you with a way out. But if you are trying to fight against Satan in your own strength, the results will not be good. “Perfectionism,” says Cinthia, “is truly straight from the pit of hell.” One of the things Satan wants more than anything is for you to think you can be like God. Remind yourself of this. Go back to Isaiah 14:12-17. Humility is not about being humiliated but about knowing yourself realistically. God says you can overcome because of Him, not in your own strength. He wants us to overcome because He loves us. If you are in Him, God has already reconciled Himself to you. He is not going to abandon you, no matter how He feels about your choices. Perfectionism has so much to do with how you run your life and how much you enjoy it. You think we will arrive and relax, but it never happens. This is because, as God once told Cinthia, “You don't even know what perfect looks like.” We cannot aspire to be God when He is the One Who created us. We cannot create except with what He has made. We can mess ourselves up but cannot make ourselves. Self-forgiveness is key. The enemy of your soul is constantly showing you what you did wrong, and no one likes shocking themselves. You must get over yourself as an act of warfare against Satan. Don't waste your time and energy covering it up. Luke 8:17 indicates that secrets will not remain secrets forever. Allow yourself to learn from your mistakes. Stop aspiring to your own perfection, and seek the Perfect One. He is the One Who “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us” (Eph. 3:20). Jesus says in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” Satan does not want you to have an abundant life. We have a hard time grasping abundance, and it looks different in each of our lives. Jesus's life was abundant without the things with which we associate it. Cinthia recalls thinking her perfectionism would protect her from pain, but it was killing her. In her book God Wants You Truly Living (Not Walking Dead), Cinthia wrote that it is hard for us to comprehend that perfectionism is not where happiness lies. But, after typing a sentence about that, she noticed those two words sitting next to each other: “happiness lies.” God knows we can't achieve happiness by chasing it. Read Ecclesiastes. Jesus was free. He had a deep, meaningful relationship with the Father. He got His value there. He had meaning and purpose and did not compare Himself to others. He had a clear conscience. He had deep, meaningful relationships with others even though those others were imperfect. He lived the abundant life without the kinds of success we think we must have. Jesus was willing to die for others in obedience to His Father, God. He calls all of us to die to something, often to things we think we need but that are actually choking the life out of us. Are you willing to die to whatever God wants you to die to in order to be free? Abundance is more than enough but never excessive. He has so much in mind for us. He went first. He is the Way. We have to follow Him in death to whatever He calls us to let die. And sometimes that thing is perfectionism. Sometimes our perfectionism has to die in order for us to live. See Philippians 3:10. What kind of life is going to be pleasing to God? How can you help the people He loves? It's not about being perfect. It's about pursuing the Perfect One and the purpose for which He made you.

“In the deserts of the heart Let the healing fountain start.” W.H. Auden (1907-1973) “The road of cleansing goes through that desert. It shall be named the way of holiness.” Isaiah 35.8 (LXX) It has been said that all true renewal within the life of the church comes through the desert fathers, or rather through the embrace of their wisdom. For it is not a worldly wisdom but the wisdom of the gospel, the wisdom of the kingdom that they set before us; not in an abstract fashion but through lived experience. The desert fathers looked deep within; precisely where Christ directs us to search for the kingdom. It's not an easy thing to do; to look deep within oneself. Often what begins to emerge can seem ugly and repulsive to us. Sin has not left us untouched. We know its darkness, its suffering, and how it shapes the way we view ourselves, the world, and others. However, this inward gaze and the ascetic life aids us in seeing with a greater clarity not only our sin but the image of something beautiful beyond imagination; the soul made in the image and likeness of God, transformed and transfigured by his grace. Even in the midst of the struggle, the beauty of God‘s mercy and grace begins to manifest itself, and to reshape the human heart. We begin to understand that the perfection to which we are called is not moral perfection; nor is it the perfection of our natural virtues. It is to share in the very life of God. Christ strength is to become our strength. His virtue is to become our virtue. It has been said the Christ is the most beautiful of all human beings. In him, we see what we shall be through the grace of God. All that is dark in us, all that becomes an impediment to our ability to love gradually begins to fade away. We no longer cling to the demands of our own will or the pettiness of our ego. We begin to see that in Christ we have all and lack nothing. It is in this realization that we become truly free and capable of love. In this episode will be talking about finding the perfect one
I choose to love you in silence… For in silence, I find no rejection, I choose to love you in loneliness… For in loneliness no one owns you but me, I choose to adore you from a distance… For distance will shield me from pain, I choose to kiss you in the wind… For the wind is gentler than my lips, I choose to hold you in my dreams… For in my dreams, you have no end.--Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.--This place is a dream. Only a sleeper considers it real. Then death comes like dawn, and you wake up laughing at what you thought was your grief.-- Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (Persian: جلالالدین محمد رومی), also known as Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī (جلالالدین محمد بلخى), Mevlânâ/Mawlānā (مولانا, "our master"), Mevlevî/Mawlawī (مولوی, "my master"), and more popularly simply as Rumi (30 September 1207 – 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian poet, Hanafi faqih, Islamic scholar, Maturidi theologian, and Sufi mystic originally from Greater Khorasan in Greater Iran. Rumi's influence transcends national borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, and the Muslims of the Indian subcontinent have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries. His poems have been widely translated into many of the world's languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi has been described as the "most popular poet" and the "best selling poet" in the United States. Like other mystic and Sufi poets of Persian literature, Rumi's poetry speaks of love which infuses the world. Rumi's teachings also express the tenets summarized in the Quranic verse which Shams-e Tabrizi cited as the essence of prophetic guidance: "Know that ‘There is no god but He,' and ask forgiveness for your sin" (Q. 47:19). In the interpretation attributed to Shams, the first part of the verse commands the humanity to seek knowledge of tawhid (oneness of God), while the second instructs them to negate their own existence. In Rumi's terms, tawhid is lived most fully through love, with the connection being made explicit in his verse that describes love as "that flame which, when it blazes up, burns away everything except the Everlasting Beloved." Rumi believed passionately in the use of music, poetry and dance as a path for reaching God. For Rumi, music helped devotees to focus their whole being on the divine and to do this so intensely that the soul was both destroyed and resurrected. It was from these ideas that the practice of whirling Dervishes developed into a ritual form. His teachings became the base for the order of the Mevlevi, which his son Sultan Walad organised. Rumi encouraged Sama, listening to music and turning or doing the sacred dance. In the Mevlevi tradition, samāʿ represents a mystical journey of spiritual ascent through mind and love to the Perfect One. In this journey, the seeker symbolically turns towards the truth, grows through love, abandons the ego, finds the truth and arrives at the Perfect. The seeker then returns from this spiritual journey, with greater maturity, to love and to be of service to the whole of creation without discrimination with regard to beliefs, races, classes and nations. Here are a collection of short poetic phrases from Rumi done in the form of a meditation. The Perfect As the Enemy of the GoodThe French philosopher Voltaire famously quipped "Le mieux est l'ennemi du bien" which means "the perfect is the enemy of the good."It would seem that the great American author John Steinbeck agrees. He wrote: "And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good." Confucius is attributed with something similar: "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without." And Shakespeare wrote in King Lear: "Striving to better, oft we mar what's well." George Orwell more recently wrote: "The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection." Be Perfect As Your Heavenly Father is PerfectThe greatest human being to ever live is a Divine Person named Jesus called Christ. He said, "You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Mt. 5:48)." So, is the perfect the enemy of the good? Or is perfection the goal? Interestingly, this passage follows directly after the Christian call to love one's enemies. All cultures say that we must love our neighbor, even as ourself. The Golden Rule is shared by most every culture. However, the call to love even your enemy is impossible. That is, it is impossible without the Divine, who is perfect. Can, then, the call to perfection be reconciled with the seemingly ubiquitous notion that the perfect is the enemy of the good? Absolutely! The key is in the view of perfection which Jesus gives us.Christ does not ask us to be perfect on our own accord. He asks us to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. It is precisely by participation with the Divine that we can hope to be perfect. And apart from Him we have no hope. Rooted in the humility of knowing that we are not God, we can begin to grow in self-knowledge. This self-knowledge then leads to personal improvement, if we cooperate with grace. If you are not a believer, then perhaps what I am saying makes no sense. But, let me put it this way. You and I are not perfect. If you have any sense of self, you know this is true. In your mind, using your power of abstraction, try to hold in your mind not something that is good or better, but the absolute best. This sheer perfection, the best, is God for whatever quality we are speaking of. This is too simplistic because God is personal, but this might help you contextualize. So, if God is the absolute best in the virtue in which you are trying to improve, then He is also the goal. And not only that, if He is the Creator and sustainer of all things, then He is the One who moves an act to its completion. To be perfect is to be with He who is perfect, every step of the way. This means that the important thing is not our perfection at any moment, but our striving. By aiming correctly at the goal, and cooperating with the perfect good, then we are on the right track. I would argue that this means more to people, innately, than even achieving a goal. We are more compelled by a hero suffering willingly to overcome an obstacle than we are to even see the hero win. What is Meant By "The Perfect is the Enemy of the Good"?The enemy of the Good is not the perfect. For the Perfect One is the Good itself. What is the enemy of the good is perfectionism. Perfectionism is a form of pelagianism, an ancient heresy in which one is to pull themselves up by their spiritual bootstraps and will to be better. Simply by trying harder, the perfectionist believes that they can attain perfection.Certainly, the perfect ideal must always be taken into account, because it gives us our goal, our terminus, our design. If we do not measure up to this perfection, then we have a few courses of action. We can discern that the path that we are pursuing is not the right one. We can continue to "try, try again." We can despair. We can resolutely continue to strive. With all the many courses of action, how can we know what to do? We can be sure that we are on the right course only if we are sure of what we are aiming at. In the absence of a target, an arrow flying through the air would only be a hazard. If we are certain that our target is worthwhile, then despair is not an option and quitting is not an option. If the target is worthwhile, then continued striving is the proper course. Being With the Perfect Rather Than Being the PerfectRemember, that to be perfect is to be WITH the perfect rather than BEING the perfect. As we seek a goal, no matter how big or small, we need to ensure that it is well ordered to the highest good, who alone is perfect. We should not ask: "what do I want?" Because we will often get the wrong answer. Instead, we should ask "what does God want for me?"If the notion of God makes you uncomfortable, then ask this subordinate question: "Where does the wisdom of the ages tell me that I should aim?" Human nature does not change and the societies and cultures over many millennia bear with them a great deal of wisdom for us to harvest. To be with the perfect is to allow ourselves to be given wisdom, accept it, and apply it. Those who attempt to make their own perfection inevitably choose wrongly. The perfect is the enemy of the good, when the perfection comes from within us.Just Do ItThe U.K. author Paul Arden, in his book It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be writes, "Too many people spend too much time trying to perfect something before they actually do it. Instead of waiting for perfection, run with what you got, and fix it along the way."I am certainly not endorsing doing something dangerous without a plan, but there is a lot of truth to what Mr. Arden has written. This really gets to the heart of what most people mean when they say that "the perfect is the enemy of the good." They mean that an idea can die in committee before it ever gets put into practice. A project might continue to percolate until all of the passion is completely gone from it. By following in the venerable traditions which came before, we give ourselves valuable guardrails. Morality is objective and the convictions of what has always been true protect us from erring egregiously as we press forward towards the good and perfect. Without these guardrails, we will fall headlong off a cliff of moral relativism and subjective narcissism. The balance gives us this: we must move forward and act. We cannot be paralyzed by fear and a desire for everything to be perfect before it is actualized. But we must constantly refocus our aim at the highest good. For the Christian, this is where prayer comes in. For those of other faiths and even agnostics, this could be called meditation.By refocusing our aim and working hard, in humility, we can have hope that we will come to the fullness of perfection. Rest assured, that if you get there one day, it will not be because of your own solo merit; it will be because of your cooperation with the highest good. This is a public episode. Lady V's Devotional Episode Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG) says: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG) Devotional Are you loaded down with heavy burdens that tip the scale to –MUCH too MUCH? Do you feel as if you are carrying the weight of the world? One final question—Do you know Jesus as LORD and Savior? In the book of Matthew chapter 11, Jesus makes a call to all those overburdened. He calls to those working hard to meet a goal that's unattainable by the works of one's hands. HE makes a call to those that are carrying heavy anxieties that eat away at one's peace and steals their joy. HE makes a call to those that think they can come up with a bailout plan, yet have no clue where to start. Jesus makes a call to ALL those in need of a SAVIOR. Jesus is saying; Come to Me, and I will give you rest. The message is clear in what Jesus is relaying. Stop going your own way and let ME lead you. Stop carrying the weight of confusion and let ME teach you things you do not know. The load would be much lighter, if you'd stop trying to carry a load that was never meant for you to bear. You see, we are meant to carry some things, but not EVERYTHING. The only ONE that came to bear the heavy weight of the world—is JESUS. Jesus gives REST for the Weary! Jesus came to rescue those in need of a SAVIOR. Jesus supplies what we need! He established righteousness from the Cross by becoming the SAVIOR of the world. He took away the sins of the world by paying the ransom for sin. He took away sin's chains of enslavement—guilt and shame. He took away the burden of trying to achieve perfection when HE was and IS the only PERFECT ONE! Jesus did what no one else could do which was BE the Savior of the world. This is the gospel call to whoever will come to Jesus and receive of HIM by believing—LET HIM COME! Receive Christ's gift of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus. Submit to HIS authority and learn from HIM. Build a relationship with Jesus that never ends. Through the power of grace, the grace of God, which is God's infinite love, salvation came to man. And God's saving grace was available to help in times of need for those that depend on HIM. In 2 Corinthians 12:9 (GNT), the Word of God says, “My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak.” Beloved, don't carry those heavy burdens—come to Jesus, (WHO is the PERSON of grace). Let HIM lead you daily, TO and THROUGH the plan of God for your life. The LORD says in Jeremiah 29:11 (GNT); “I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for.” Beloved, it's time...it's time to depend on JESUS! Draw from the ONE who is the LIGHT in the midst of dark times. HE provides Rest for the Weary! Remember, God loves you and HIS grace keeps on saving through HIS Son—JESUS CHRIST! Let's pray... Heavenly Father, We come to YOU in the Name of Jesus with thanksgiving in our hearts. Father God, we thank YOU for YOUR goodness in our lives. We thank YOU that we can always depend on YOU. Father God, I lift up every believer in Christ, that our dependency will always be upon YOU. And, I pray that every heart of the believer is eagerly awaiting the return of our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST! Father God, as we go about life from day to day, help us to remember that YOU made the blueprint for our lives. Help us to know that there is not a day that we should allow ourselves to begin without YOU. Instead, help us to trust in the LORD with all our heart and not lea...
