She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Loss and grief came at her in crashing waves, and she found it nearly impossible to surface except in small moments that she began to call "microjoys" -- little bits of beauty or humor or unexpected light amidst the darkness. In Microjoys, Cyndie shares 50 mini-essays about these small moments that helped her move through the most difficult days of her life. Moments like: flipping through recipe cards written in her late mother's handwriting. Embracing her status as the Weird Lawn Chair Person™ of her neighborhood. Wearing a dress covered in 15 pounds of sequins... just because. Feeling good about someone else's good news ("freudenfreude" - the less-sexy-but-still-essential twin of schadenfreude.) By sharing the microjoys in her life, Cyndie invites us all-- in whatever circumstances we're in -- to slow down, to notice what is in front of us, and to be kind to ourselves. In fact, noticing these microjoys can be a form of self-care and mental health maintenance: a way to bear life's heaviness and stresses a little more easily, for a short time. Julie and Casey sit down for an encore conversation with Cyndie Spiegel, where they get to talk all things “Microjoys”, what it's like to balance public and private as a shiny person, and touch upon lots of micro-topics from cats to dealing with pandemic weight gain.   TOP TAKEAWAYS: Microjoys are not about the size of the joy, but rather its accessibility. Instead of toxic positivity, microjoys allow us to accept that things are as okay as they can be at any moment, but you can find joy anywhere. There is no past place to get back to. Whether it's our pre-pandemic size, a past version of ourselves, or deeply missing an important person, the only way out is through, and you are not the same on the other side.   Proving yourself to others can be a fatberg of a time suck . . . notice if you are wasting any time trying to convince someone else of who you are. Try shifting proving yourself to others to proving yourself to yourself.   And a bonus tip but one that never gets old: If your pants are too small, buy a bigger size. LESSON: Navigating vulnerability in speeches. About Cyndie: Cyndie Spiegel is a born storyteller–turned–writer; she's an aspirational voice and an igniter of powerful conversation around self-acceptance, integrity, and joy. She is a former fashion executive, adjunct professor at Parsons School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology, and holds a masters of professional studies. She is also a TEDx speaker and a certified yoga and meditation teacher. Her honest storytelling, vulnerable self-inquiry, and penchant for swear words have made her a sought-after speaker for conferences, brands, and organizations, and she has been featured in publications such as Forbes, Glamour, Teen Vogue, and HuffPost. She currently lives in New Jersey with her (very handsome) photographer husband, two cats, way too many patterns, and an excessive number of houseplants. She is the founder of Dear Grown Ass Women, an inclusive and highly relatable social community for women 35+, and she is also the author of A Year of Positive Thinking.  (Photo credit: Ira James)  Author Site: www.cyndiespiegel.com  Social: Instagram @cyndiespiegel BUY MICROJOYS!

In a ten-month period in 2020, Cyndie Spiegel's young nephew (who she was close to) was murdered, her mum died unexpectedly (not long after), her brother had a severe stroke and almost died and Cyndie was diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing surgery and radiation therapy. And somehow, in the middle of all that suffering, grief and mayhem, Cyndie found a way to latch onto moments of joy. Sometimes life truly sucks and sh*t things happen to good people but I love the way Cyndie thinks, tells stories and connects and I believe for many, this will be an important listen. Microjoys invites us to make space for all the feels, including the accessible moments of joy that might be hiding in plain sight. I can't wait for you to meet her. You know the old phrase, 'You need to stop and smell the roses.' That's the basis for today's conversation. We get so wrapped up in our lives that we forget about those beautiful little things that surround us. Cyndie Spiegel is the author of the book 'Microjoys: Finding Hope (Especially) When Life Is Not Ok.' She's gone through a lot since the start of the pandemic from deaths to cancer diagnoses. There was a year long span that would've crushed anyone, and no one would've blamed Spiegel if she had curled into a ball and spent her days crying. But that's not what she did. Instead she turned her focus to 'microjoys.' Spiegel started to open her eyes to the world around her and it was those little things that often go unnoticed that helped keep her sane during the hardest time in her life. This is a very inspirational book and I think it can be helpful to anyone. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Cyndie Spiegel.

Finding Sparkle Chasing Light

Today's episode is all about full circle moments. The last time I was in New York was when Lucas and I rang in 2020 with quite the adventure. But, I was back last week to shoot Alt Summit, which had been on pandemic-hiatus since March 2020. Yes, the last place I was before the world shut down was with some of my favourite people shooting a conference, yes doing our elbow greetings and not touching our faces, in Palm Springs. It was so special being back with inspiring women, and old friends and on today's show I'm sharing 5 of my top takeaways from the conference this year.“Just because you're not the best yet doesn't mean you don't belong.” Be sure to follow Kate Voegele on instagram and check out her blog she started with her sister, We The Dreamers.“Start where you are with what you have – then take the next step” I was so inspired by Julie Lewis' story. I highly encourage you to learn more about the 30/30 project, and give her a follow on instagram. Oh, and visit her website stillpositive.com to learn more about her book coming out in 2023.“Grief and joy can exist together.” I met Cyndie Spiegel at both of our first Alt Summit's several years ago. She had imploded her own life, and had this beautiful gift of making everyone around her feel so seen and loved. I have joyfully and proudly watched her build communities, start businesses, and write a book, and most recently have unfortunately watch her experience the worst tragedies imaginable. She showed up with love, vulnerability, grace and humour. Give her a follow on instagram, and check out her website. If you want to learn more about her inclusive community for 35+ women be sure to check out Dear Grown Ass Woman. I couldn't be more excited to read her new book, Microjoys: Finding Hope (Especially) When Life Is Not Okay, which is available for pre-order now!“The growth and opportunity is in the fear.” I am a big fan of My Unorthodox Life on Netflix so I was very excited to meet, photograph, and listen to Julia Haart's keynote. Be sure to follow Julia on instagram, check out their show (I think Season 2 is coming out soon!) and check out her book, Brazen.“Online friendships can be just as beautiful and special as in person ones.” I am so fortunate to have built really incredible relationships over the years at Alt Summit. We may only see each other once a year in person, but we are able to stay connected throughout the year and have seen each other through some big life stuff. I wasn't sure what the 2.5 year break would do - but we all picked up exactly where we left off, and I am endlessly grateful for it! Alt Summit is coming back to Palm Springs in March 2023 and registration is open now, and I would LOVE to see you there.Lastly, my Late to the Party segment featured none other than the inimitable Gabrielle Blair. From starting her blog, Design Mom, in 2016 (and being named Time Magazine's Website of the Year among other awards), to founding Alt Summit, and becoming a NYT best-selling author for her first book, Design Mom: Living With Kids. Most recently she has entered a new kind of fame for her viral twitter threads, and her first one gained so much praise and traction that it has become a BOOK! Yes, Ejaculate Responsibly is about to change the world by flipping the abortion debate on its head. There are 28 digestible, compelling arguments about why men are actually responsibly for unwanted pregnancies, and if we want to reduce abortions we need to have men responsibly ejaculate. It's available everywhere books are sold, but I ordered my copies locally in Toronto here. You must follow Design Mom on instagram, where you'll have a nice balance of beautiful renovations of the Blair family's 1600's home in Normany, France mixed with rage-y, funny, and mic-drop worthy tweet roundups. You should absolutely also follow Gabrielle on Twitter, at Design Mom. And, if you're not a big twitter user you're still in luck, because she curates the best of twitter on her instagram page, @twitterbydesignmom!I had so much fun recording this episode, and I hope you enjoyed listening to it. Be sure to leave a review and share with someone in your life who might enjoy it. And, stay connected with me on instagram, @findingsparklechasinglight and of course my personal account, too. Big thanks to Lucas for producing and editing the show, and of course Mike Halyk for the music. See you next week!

This episode will be unlike any conversation we've ever aired on Good Life Project. For the first time on the podcast, I'm on the other side of the mic. And, to be honest, the thought of it kind of terrifies me. Even now, with it's recorded and I know how it went and what's on tape, it still kind of terrifies me. I'm pretty comfortable asking the questions, and even answering questions on other people's shows. This, however, is different. Today, I asked my dear friend, big-hearted human, renowned keynote speaker, community builder, “personal power alchemist,”* bestselling author, and all-around truth-teller, Cyndie Spiegel, to sit in the interviewer's seat and not let me off the hook. That's exactly what she did, in the kindest, but also realest way possible. I trusted her to push me into places I never go, topics I never speak about. This was a conversation that made me squirm, in the best of ways. Why would I do this? Because, by the time you're listening to this, my new book SPARKED, will be out, or literally hours away. It's a book about being seen, reclaiming agency and control, reimagining the way we work, and the way our work makes us feel. This book, it's been a wild adventure that is so close to my heart in ways and on levels nothing else I've written has approached. Penned in the throes of the pandemic, living semi-nomadically for most of it, the journey to get here has been equally hard, beautiful, heartbreaking, heart-opening, eye-opening, and transformative. I wanted to sit down with someone who knows me well enough, who I trust enough, to take me to all those places of discomfort and vulnerability that I rarely talk about on the air. Sure, we touch into the big ideas and key awakening and insights in the book, but this conversation is about so much more. The creative process, the role of vulnerability, love, devotion, revelation, and grace.I'm both freaked out, and incredibly excited to share it with you. I'm Jonathan Fields, turning the mic over to Cyndie Spiegel, and this is Good Life Project. If you LOVED this episode:I have a single ask: Join me on this journey. Pick up a copy of SPARKED wherever you buy books. We'll drop links to various booksellers. Dive into it, discover your own personal Sparketype. Then begin to bring it to the world. Julie and Casey touch bases cross-country under shelter in place, and talk with powerhouse and wonderful human Cyndie Spiegel on how women can stop competing and support each other, what authenticity really means, developing community, and going through "the goo".  More than a few F-bombs are dropped- for those with kids at home right now, we'll call this one "R" for language. Top Takeaways: Women are conditioned to compete with each other, but it doesn't have to be that way. The superpower of authenticity is not about not caring what people think, it's about not giving your power away. Sometimes wonderful things unfold, even without chasing them. Women over 35 have experience and battle scars.  They are voices to be listened to. The reason why no one else can do the work for you and tell you what your process should be.  Bio:  Cyndie Spiegel is an igniter of powerful conversation and an aspirational voice within women’s leadership and culture. She is a commanding keynote speaker [who sometimes drops the F-bomb casually and also uses words like “manifesting” and “belonging”]. She is an innate connector, community builder and all-around truth teller on a mission to empower folks to live more boldly and refine their mindsets for good.  She is a professional speaker and also the author of "A Year of Positive Thinking".  (And she’s super cool.)

I’m so excited to be sitting down with Cyndie Spiegel, a Brooklyn-based small business consultant, coach, and TEDx speaker. Cyndie is the brains behind The Collective (of Us), a small business accelerator for women, and The Community (of Us), an online hub for conversation and change-making community. Regardless of the work she's doing, Cyndie has a gift for bringing people together AND for telling it like it is. Her perspective on community and belonging is beautiful and important, her talks are filled with truth bombs (and f-bombs), and her knack for facilitating difficult conversations is second to none.  If you're looking for ways to create change in your life or to expand your community of strong and supportive women, this episode is for you. We touch on the damaging effects of echo chambers, the power of empathy, truly listening to those around you, the importance of sisterhood, standing in your truth, and why belonging to yourself first is a necessary part of being in community.   So grab your favorite cup of something and settle in for an insightful and enjoyable conversation. I’d love to hear from you! What stood out most from Cyndie’s interview? What role does community play in your life?  Topics Discussed: An introduction to Cyndie Spiegel and what she does Why Cyndie says the work you're trained to do isn't always the work you're meant to do The value of being around people who don't think like you  The Community of Us and how that came about in reaction to the events of 2017 Echo chambers and why they can be detrimental to our wellbeing Why Cyndie believes that change happens through conversations with people who are different than us The importance of flexibility while learning to stand alone in your truth Why practice is the difference between falling apart and integrating new perspectives Why we all need to learn how to listen and allow people to be who they are Letting it be so that it can grow Belonging to yourself first and why that's a necessary first step Allowing yourself to be uncomfortable more often Surround yourself with powerful women who stand for you and not agree with you all the time Standing in your truth means letting go of what doesn't feel right Learning that standing in your truth doesn't always mean you'll be liked Trying on new things and ideas without clinging to the end result  The concept of "upspiraling" and what that means for creating change Cyndie's definition of everyday magic and how it shows up in her life Connect with Cyndie Spiegel online: CyndieSpiegel.com The Community of Us The Collective of Us Instagram Resource Links: Daring Greatly* by  The Gifts of Imperfection* by Brené Brown Braving the Wilderness* by Brené Brown Anatomy of the Spirit* by Caroline Myss Morning Pages The Artists Way* by Julia Cameron   Hit me up: Twitter: @emilylevenson and #somekindofmagic Instagram: @emilylevenson and #somekindofmagic FB Page: Emily Levenson   * This is an affiliate link.

Cyndie was 35 years old and had spent the past 15 years working herself into an enviable position in the New York fashion industry when she realized it was no longer the life she wanted. So, she quit her job and left it all behind without knowing what was next. Today on the podcast we are bringing back Cyndie Spiegel. Cyndie is a Brooklyn-based consultant, coach and TedX speaker. She is the founder of The Community of Us – an inclusive strategic community for women change makers, founders, creative business owners, and solopreneurs. Today, we are talking about creating real relationships and what it means to have friendships and empower other women. In the creative community, particularly the entrepreneurial women’s space today, there has been a shift in the way we support one another. That all love, all positivity, all empowering, 2018 feminism, all sisters high-fiving sisters! When in reality, it’s all a little phony. Despite what we promote online, there is often still shameful feelings of jealousy, envy, and resentment that are difficult to talk about. These feelings often get in the way of us helping others, which is really not what we want as good human beings! So, how do we release our shame, embrace this community mindset and truly empower other women? Cyndie gives us four really tangible steps to analyze how we are treating other women, be it in our industry or in our friendships, in order to help us forgive ourselves and quit the Tall Poppy Syndrome! Take a listen to find out what that is. It’s real! Thank you for listening! Please subscribe, rate and review The Strategy Hour Podcast on iTunes. Today I speak with Cyndie Spiegel, the founder of the Collective of Us, an incubator for women’s small businesses. I've had the pleasure to teach Cyndie yoga for many years, beginning during the time that she was a full-time executive for a major fashion brand. In today’s episode, Cyndie and I work to map the fine line between wishful thinking and setting goals; between working hard to get what you want and trusting the universe to reveal your path. Cyndie's mission is to help women create bold businesses, which she defines as a profitable business based on the foundation of authenticity, courage, confidence, integrity, and community. Cyndie is an inspiring public speaker who shares her insights at conferences around the U.S. and beyond and I'm delighted that she's sharing inspiration with us today. We talk about work, balance, goals, yoga and real happiness. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Please support me on Patreon.com/peterspodcast and keep this podcast working as a bold business!

Today on the podcast we have Cyndie Spiegel. She is about to get a little crazy up in here so I’m just warning you. We met Cyndie last year at a conference and she just blew our socks off! We are talking about some hard stuff today but I think stuff that’s really needed. Cyndie drops some truth bombs and we talk about how we treat women in the online world and as small business owners, how we can take and give criticism better. Cyndie shares her “don’t, shouldn’t on yourself” philosophy, ideas for some collaborations and how to make those go well. We also dive into how to deal with negative Nancie’s and how to get into the mindset in dealing with bad emails, bad comments, and negative energy that we sometimes receive from putting ourselves and our business out there. We focus on how to own your own emotions and take control, which helps so tremendously when we work from home and we’re running these businesses by ourselves. Cyndie gives some incredible tips on how to do this and how to get into positive, successful, and actionable mindsets. Oh, the hustle. We hear it all the time - you have to work hard to win big, but make sure you have work-life balance, and don't forget about self care, and la;ksdjf;oicuxfewr. And which messages are we supposed to take to heart? The ones that tell us to chill the eff out or the ones that tell us we have to go all in and work our tails off to become successful in this world? Both. And neither.  This week on the podcast, I sat down with small business strategist and coach for creative entrepreneurs, Cyndie Spiegel, to talk about the hustle - the good, the bad, and the ugly. Cyndie at I met at ALT in January (and we'll both be back there to speak next month!) and hit it off immediately. I adore her and knew that she had to be on the show.  We also talked about the leap and the net will appear adage, how to know it's time to make a change, boundaries, and what stepping up your game really looks like for most creative entrepreneurs. If you're interested in making a change in your life or have been feeling a pull towards something bigger for yourself, this episode is for you! It's also for you if you're tired of feeling overwhelmed in your business and are wondering when the next chapter is going to start.  Cyndie.
