Liturgical abuses are becoming more disturbing in many churches in Africa. This is the conclusion of Sr Leonida Katunge who speaks on why some strange rituals and practices invented by some priests in the Catholic liturgy are liturgical abuses that need to be stamped out immediately in Africa. But in order for this to happen, there is the need, she argues, to deepen liturgical formation for priests and other pastoral agents. In addition, there is the need to deepen the faith of the People of God and to address some of the root causes of liturgical abuses and the blind and uncritical adoption of practices from the Pentecostal churches and aspects of African traditional religions. Sr Katunge shows us how to address these liturgical abuses, and improve the quality, beauty, and solemnity of our liturgical worship in Africa.
This week Liturgist the very Rev. Fr Peter Williams AM joins us live to discuss the importance of sacred scripture in the very context of the sacred liturgy. The misconception that the Mass is rooted in the Traditions of Men is refuted in this episode, and the beauty and richness of the Mass is explained as having it's foundation in the scripture. This episode will unpack the centrality of sacred scripture in the liturgy, through the readinsg, gospel and even the Eucharistic Sacrifice. It's Christian Rock Summer! This is the second episode in a month long exploration of the fringes of Christian music with Josh Christianson joining Josiah as co-host. We're talking "not a Christian band, just Christians in a band." We're talking Christianity being more of a relationship than a religion. On today's episode, Nathan Thiessen (@NateT93) joins Josh and Josiah to talk about the post-hardcore band, Emery, and the podcast it gave birth to: Bad Christian. They discuss the band's role in the world of Christian alternative music, the complex relationship with purity culture in their early lyrics, and the way that they represented something of an off-ramp for many young people within conservative evangelicalism, including Josiah and Nate. How to find peace with your body, and learn to trust yourself. A conversation with the luminous and deeply wise Hillary McBride. One of the many reasons I want to spotlight her is that her work explores similar territory as my new course Energize: 28 days to supercharge your metabolism and nourish your radiance. I created Energize because I wanted to offer a nutrition program that honors and accepts yourself just as you are, while creating new practices of deeper nourishment for your body as well as your mindset and spirit, and healing your body image. A perspective that sees food as an abundant gift to us, and understands our relationship to it as one of energy both practically and spiritually. You can learn all about Energize and join at https://www.nicolemeline.com/energize In this conversation with Hillary, we go into how we can be growth-oriented while still living in gratitude and contentment with who we are now. That's a fine line to dance, and maybe you've felt that exhaustion or apathy that can be the mark that you're living in a constant state of dissatisfaction with yourself, which is a common subtext to a lot of wellness and personal development culture. So we explore how to celebrate and accept what is, even as we practice growth. Hillary is such a special and powerful voice for our moment. She is that rare form of a public intellectual, translating high level academic scholarship in psychology into the language of the public square and social media. Her books: “The Wisdom of Your Body” “Practices for Embodied Living” should be manuals for how to relate to your body — this topic most of us receive no formal eduction about growing up, and often toxic ideas modeled by family members or peers. So much wisdom in these books, and in her work, as you'll hear. I first heard Hillary on The Liturgists podcast, along with some other great conversations she's had on the “We Can Do Hard Things" and “For the Love”, and as you'll hear, her voice itself is good medicine, and her wisdom is vast. Michael Gungor and his wife Lisa were pioneers in the Christian music scene, building a loyal fan base through Gungor's music and podcasts such as The Liturgists. However, Michael's recent turn towards an increasingly progressive, mystical and deconstructed interpretation of faith has left many Christians confused. In this episode Michael is joined by Christian songwriter and teacher, Evan Wickham as they break down many of the questions millennials and Gen Z'ers are facing today and what impact and interpretation, if any, this has on the church, modern theology and Christian music today. Patrick talks with a grief stricken widow who seeks solace in knowing her husband's spirit lives on. Patrick also tackles the delicate balance of reverence and worship etiquette, addressing the need for respect within the church walls, including appropriate attire and behavior. He also explores the incorporation of sacred music into liturgy, reconciling tradition with contemporary practices. Amidst these poignant discussions, Patrick shares practical wisdom on navigating family conflicts, and offers guidance to those seeking to deepen their connection with the Catholic faith. Patty - A friend asked me if it was bad to hang decorative crosses in the bathroom. (02:30) John - Is there anything the catechism teaches about modesty at church? (03:56) Aaron - I am exploring Calvinism and other religions. What is the most respectful way to attend a Catholic mass especially while not believing that communion is the body and blood of Christ? Lynn - I lost my husband three years ago and I am still grieving. Can he see me and does he know that I'm still sad? (14:57) Cindy - I was in adoration and someone came in who was disruptive and I wanted to reach out to her but I didn't think it was my place. Would that have been alright if I had gone and talked to her? (22:32) John - My older brother can only eat through a feeding tube. Is there any way that he can receive communion? (30:07) Patrick shares what he did when he didn't trust one of his daughters' boyfriends and he had to put an end to that relationship (34:35) Claudia - I am on a new Liturgist committee and we want to be open to other opinions, but our music director is Lutheran. How do I graciously tell him that is not the direction we are going in?

Cardinal Roche opens the Lenten season on “Preach: The Catholic Homilies Podcast” with a heartfelt message taken from the Scripture readings for Ash Wednesday: “Come back to me with all your heart.” When asked by host Ricardo da Silva, S.J., why he chose the theme of “Welcome Home” and not to preach “in a heavier way,” to emphasize the penitential nature of the season, the cardinal, who is the most senior Vatican official to appear on the show, simply replies: “Well, because I think, really, that's what Lent is all about.” Cardinal Roche serves as the prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and is a former chairman of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). On the show, he not only imparts Lenten preaching wisdom but also shares his insights into Pope Francis' synodal vision and emphasizes the need for preachers to meticulously prepare their homilies: “I would say, really, take preaching—take your homily very, very seriously. And don't be the person who looks on Saturday night to see what he has to say on Sunday morning.” Read the full text of this week's homily and Scripture readings. An Interpretation of the Divine Liturgy Based on Actual Events and Experiences of Holy Priests, Monks and Lay People (Piraeus, Greece, 2008) "It is a fact that numerous interpretations of the Divine Liturgy which were mainly based on the enlightenment and Grace of the Holy Spirit, were handed on to us by the Church Fathers. What makes this current analysis of my spiritual child Fr Stephanos Anagnostopoulos, of the Divine Liturgy noteworthy as well as beneficial, is the fact that it is offered through the experiences and revelations of worthy Liturgists of the Most High, older and more recent ones.I, as well as its author, wish that this book will lead us all to the genuine liturgical conscience and life in order to urge us in a spirited way, as grateful servants to try to rest the heart of His feelings so that He will be comforted, according to the Psalter: ‘. . . and because of His servants shall He be comforted' (Ps. 134:14). May we sense that which God offered us and thus rejoice in the beauty of His eros. Amen. Leo grew up a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a Protestant-Christian denomination distinguished by its observance of the Sabbath (on Saturday) as a sanctified day of rest. While studying the Bible, he started noticing circular logic and other problematic reasoning which led him to question assumptions from his upbringing and begin to let go of his faith. As an INTP, reworking his beliefs wasn't personally as challenging as the fear of disappointing his family because leaving the faith could be interpreted as jeopardizing his soul and a cause for separation from the ones he loves. What's clear is that both Steve and Leo have had to do a lot of thinking surrounding issues of faith and community. Steve and Leo also talk about free-will, cults, workaholism, burnout and depression. Peter Rollins returns to the Liturgists podcast to disagree with Michael about reality being “One” and, of course, to have some good laughs while doing so.
As season 7 draws to a close, Michael talks about the mission of the Liturgists and where things are headed.
We've lot a lot of listeners and patrons this season. Perhaps not surprisingly, reframing Christianity to be seen as nondual spiritual technologies is not everyone's cup of tea. (Neither is Michael Gungor) But we also want you to know that we hear you and that there's space for you and your disagreement here too. In this episode, Michael talks with an old Christian music buddy (and Liturgists podcast listener), Jimmy Needham, about why they disagree about the content of this season.
The Liturgists forms its first faux ecumenical theological council as Rev. Brianna Lynn, Mason Smith, Emily Capshaw, Latifah Alattas, Chris Davies and Michael Gungor have a fun, lively discussion about the Trinity and what, if any, value it has as a spiritual technology beyond the oppressive patriarchal usages that are so common historically.
Love your neighbor, love your enemy. Jamie Lee Finch (the Liturgists) and Propaganda (Red Couch Podcast) discuss with Joey “loving others” in the context of people's personal journeys, social media “venting,” and the ability or inability to humanize others. Should we respond to “ignorant hate” differently than how we respond to just straight up, ‘ol hate? Do some legitimately have a harder time loving because of their place in society and past experiences? And should we be cautious in using the word “should” when it comes to another person's ability to love well?
