Paul McVerry is an experienced cattleman and a stud breeder, who had a wild vision to fly a gift of cattle to India with the help of winemaker Dan Murphy. (R)New Zealand-born cattleman Paul McVerry has been surrounded by animals his whole life, and not just in cattle pens or in sheep yards.Paul has accompanied thoroughbred horses on weeks-long ship journeys across the Pacific ocean. He's been stuck with prized bulls in the back of a truck going the wrong way down Broadway in New York City.After being with animals on land-bound vehicles and sea-faring vessels, eventually Paul thought, "Cows can fly."In the 1970s, thousands of cattle were being slaughtered in Victoria and southern New South Wales because of ongoing drought. New figures from the Office for National Statistics show a record number of people are not employed due to long term sickness. The Government's launching a new task force with the aim of getting people who are off work and on benefits, back on the payroll. The Prime Minister has suggested they could they be persuaded to get out into the fields to pick fruit and veg.The wet weather is impacting farmers across the country - and flower growers are being hit too. For many of those exhibiting this week at the Chelsea Flower Show, the heavy rain has meant losses of precious stock. Some haven't been able to exhibit this year at all. And animal welfare organisations have welcomed a ban on exports of some live animals from Great Britain for slaughter and fattening, which has come into law this week. Animal rights in Aotearoa have been called into question once again with tensions rising between agricultural industry players and animal rights activists in light of coalition government agreements that outline a reversal of the recent ban on live animal export. In 2021, Aotearoa took a world-leading stance in banning live animal exports by sea, phasing out the practice this time last year. The proposed repeal signals a wider conversation around animal rights in Aotearoa, from political responsibility to public knowledge and transparent practice.  Producer Jasmine Gray spoke to Tara Jackson, Executive Director of New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society, to gain insight into the broader current state of animal rights in Aotearoa and to get her comments on the Live Export bill. The previous Labour government introduced a ban on the live export of animals, with former agriculture minister Damien O' Connor claiming the ban upheld New Zealand's reputation for animal welfare standards. The current National led government has been pressured by several lobbying groups to overturn the ban, including a million dollar campaign by Livestock Export New Zealand.  Wire host Castor spoke to SAFE for Animals CEO, Debra Ashton, about SAFE, the possible repeal, and consequences for animals.

It's being described as a major leap backwards in animal welfare in New Zealand, that is the resumption of live animal exports by sea. The SPCA is urging the Government to rethink its election promise to reverse the ban introduced by the previous government and bring back the export of live, farmed animals on ships. Just last month, a ship carrying 16,000 sheep and cattle en route from Australia to Israel, was turned back because of the risk of coming under attack in the Red Sea. The animals have been stranded for over a week in intense heat in Western Australia. Dr Arnja Dale, Chief Scientific Officer for the SPCA, speaks to Jimmy Ellingham. Key players in the agriculture industry have begun a one-million dollar lobbying campaign to persuade the government to restart live animal exports. A ban by the previous Labour government began in April 2023. National's coalition agreements with both ACT and New Zealand First promise to reverse the ban. But Livestock Export New Zealand believes that without a major lobbying and PR campaign, the government's pledge could stall or even fail. Investigative Journalist Guyon Espiner has the story.

The Government has intervened in an increasingly furious row between British Sugar and the National Farmers' Union over the price farmers will be paid for sugar beet next year. Some turkey farmers are bringing forward their Christmas plans in an effort to beat bird flu. As we reported, this time last year many were dealing with outbreaks on their farms and though this year (so far) there have been fewer cases, turkey farmers are taking extra measures to protect flocks. We hear a warning of the impact of the Government's decision to ban the export of live animals for slaughter. This was proposed but then dropped by the Government back in May. It's now been revived and appeared in the King's speech earlier this week. The Farmers' Union of Wales says it is not good news for farmers.
