There was a knock at my door in 1978, I opened it, and there stood John Belushi. One moment earlier, I had been playing guitar on the sofa, writing a funny song, and if you had asked me who was the one person in Hollywood I wanted to meet, it would have been John Belushi, the man at my doorstep, smiling broadly.“Are you Michael Dare?” he asked.“Yeah?” I replied.“Can I come in?”“You bet.”Turned out that day was his first on the set of 1941. It was his first big Hollywood picture after the success of the low-budget Animal House, which had just come out. He was in a great mood, having just spent the day on the set with Steven Spielberg. Turned out a friend who was also working on the film had bummed a joint from me the day before. Turned out he shared it with John. Turned out John was used to New York brown Colombian dirt weed, full of seeds and sticks, and had never had anything like fresh green pungent sparkly California sensimilla. He grabbed my friend by the lapels, pinned him to the wall and said “Where did you get this?”At this point, my life could have turned out quite different, but my friend dispensed with all the standard drug protocol and just told John all about me. Armed with my address and phone number, John ignored the latter and headed towards the former. He knew he didn't have to call first. He was John Fucking Belushi and he knew he was welcome anywhere, especially somewhere that was a source of fine bud. He was right.I whipped out the bong, we both took a couple of blasts, and John headed for my record collection, complaining I didn't have enough R&B. We found stuff to listen to anyway, I sat at the piano, and he started singing. We played together for hours.Finally, when it was time to leave, he asked me if I could get more of that pot. I said sure. He pulled out a wad of hundred dollar bills and handed them to me, saying “Take what you need,” turning his back to me to look through records, showing not a care in the world for how much money I took, an astonishing display of trust. I peeled off a couple bills and handed back the rest.The next day, I went to my dealer and told him all about my visitor. He flipped out, took the money, gave me some pot, then asked “Do you think he might want some mushrooms? How about some hash?” before fronting me his entire inventory which I gladly accepted.The next day John came by again, this time with Dan Aykroyd. They bought my entire stock.The next day, John brought by another actor from the film, then another, then an Eagle, a couple of directors, the head of a studio, and basically everybody he met in Hollywood. Episode 119 is our tribute to one of the greatest producers of all-time, J Dilla. Whether you knew him as Jon Doe, Jay Dee, J. Yancey, Dilla Dog or just Dilla, you knew him as the most influential producer hip-hop has seen in the last quarter century. J Dilla wasn't just a musical genius, he absolutely reinventing the way hip-hop was being created. His passion, imagination and the prowess displayed on each track is something we'll never be able to duplicate. To put it bluntly, J Dilla was simply ahead of his time. On part 1, we're playing the essentials from The Pharcyde, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Common, The Roots, Janet Jackson, Q-Tip and of course Slum Village. Back in the late 90’s me and mate Rees used to make each other mixtapes. We’d try and one up each other by finding mint tunes that other the one hadn’t heard. So spent a lot of time buying underground Hip Hop cd’s. We stumbled on an album called Superrappin’, the stand out track being New Years Resolution by Lootpack. Had never heard of them before but was impressed with a producer that would take on a Preemo sample. Their album Soundpieces : Da Antidote followed and the rest is history. This past Saturday, RZA and DJ Premier had one of the most epic producer battles we have all witnessed. The two Hall of Fame producers were set to just do 20 tracks and end the session; however, they couldn't hold back. Both did at least 25 songs apiece. I couldn't keep count. I was in true fan-mode and really enjoyed the show. Who won the battle? The answer is clear...Hip-Hop won on Saturday night. Hip-Hop, in its truest form, is raw, unfiltered, and imperfect. Preemo and RZA reminded us of that. Some of their greatest hits weren't perfect productions through-and-through, but they were perfect for Hip-Hop. We talk with the guys about their new album PRhyme 2, the most meaningful co-signs they've ever received, what Dr. Dre's studio speakers can do to an artist's music and their chest, how to react to internet trolls, all the numbers they have in their cell phones but never text, and their first ever TV appearances. Royce discusses working three jobs a day after graduating high school in addition to starting his rap career, all with the threat of his father sending him to the army hanging over his head. Royce recalls almost rapping for Redman in Detroit, the open mics around town, his one-way plane ticket to NYC, working with Pharrell and Chad and Kelis before The Neptunes blew up, and how he ruined his first record contract with Tommy Boy. Preemo reveals how he and Guru lived out of Branford Marsalis' brownstone in Brooklyn, meeting Dave Chapelle through Talib Kweli and Mos Def, knowing Ol Dirty Bastard when he had a staircase flattop in 1988, programming drums on Gangstarr records together with Guru, each of them punching buttons, and the absurdity of artists being paid to make an appearance in a music video. He started his career in the 1980s, as an MC/producer with The Alliance, then transitioned into a producer when he worked with MC Lyte and Audio Two on their early albums. Michael Dare :Life and Death of Captain Preemo or Bob Woodward vs. John Belushi and MeMichael Dare:There was a knock at my door in 1978, I opened it, and there stood John Belushi. One moment earlier, I had been playing guitar on the sofa, writing a funny song, and if you had asked me who was the one person in Hollywood I wanted to meet, it would have been John Belushi, the man at my doorstep, smiling broadly.“Are you Michael Dare?” he asked.“Yeah?” I replied.“Can I come in?”“You bet.”Turned out that day was his first on the set of 1941. It was his first big Hollywood picture after the success of the low-budget Animal House, which had just come out. He was in a great mood, having just spent the day on the set with Steven Spielberg. Turned out a friend who was also working on the film had bummed a joint from me the day before. Turned out he shared it with John. Turned out John was used to New York brown Colombian dirt weed, full of seeds and sticks, and had never had anything like fresh green pungent sparkly California sensimilla. He grabbed my friend by the lapels, pinned him to the wall and said “Where did you get this?”At this point, my life could have turned out quite different, but my friend dispensed with all the standard drug protocol and just told John all about me. Armed with my address and phone number, John ignored the latter and headed towards the former. He knew he didn't have to call first. He was John Fucking Belushi and he knew he was welcome anywhere, especially somewhere that was a source of fine bud. He was right.I whipped out the bong, we both took a couple of blasts, and John headed for my record collection, complaining I didn't have enough R&B. We found stuff to listen to anyway, I sat at the piano, and he started singing. We played together for hours.Finally, when it was time to leave, he asked me if I could get more of that pot. I said sure. He pulled out a wad of hundred dollar bills and handed them to me, saying “Take what you need,” turning his back to me to look through records, showing not a care in the world for how much money I took, an astonishing display of trust. I peeled off a couple bills and handed back the rest.The next day, I went to my dealer and told him all about my visitor. He flipped out, took the money, gave me some pot, then asked “Do you think he might want some mushrooms? How about some hash?” before fronting me his entire inventory which I gladly accepted.The next day John came by again, this time with Dan Aykroyd. They bought my entire stock.The next day, John brought by another actor from the film, then another, then an Eagle, a couple of directors, the head of a studio, and basically everybody he met in Hollywood.
