Mega-city grand vision films. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Megalopolis (2024) and Metropolis (1927), films by Francis Ford Coppola and Fritz Lang. We begin by sharing our experiences watching Metropolis, including the first time watching it and our experience watching it more recently. We talk about the music in Metropolis, how it's drawn from music before it and influenced music after the film. We start our conversation about Megalopolis by questioning the film's logic and figuring out what the film is trying to do. We praise and dissect the work of Aubrey Plaza, Talia Shire and Kathryn Hunter, as well as critique the work of the cast as a whole. We consider the film regarding other films and filmmakers' work, trying to figure out what could have made Megalopolis a better film. We discuss the performances from Metropolis, especially the work of Brigitte Helm. We finish by discussing the themes, ideas and politics of Metropolis and whether it is still relevant to us today.

It's a quick but nourishing midweek serving of Breakfast All Day. We have early reviews of two big movies that are opening this weekend. First, we couldn't wait to talk about "Megalopolis," Francis Ford Coppola's long-gestating sci-fi epic. We're extremely mixed on it, but that feels fitting, given the big, ambitious swings the movie is taking. Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf and Kathryn Hunter are among the massive ensemble cast. Then, we review "The Wild Robot," the latest features from DreamWorks Animation. It's breathtakingly beautiful and features some great voice performances from Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor and Catherine O'Hara. A strong choice for the whole family, even if it does turn a bit heavy-handed toward the end. Check back with us on Friday for reviews of "Will & Harper" on Netflix and "Wolfs" on Apple TV+. Despite my appreciation for Yorgos Lanthimos' earlier work, I was not planning on seeing Poor Things. A lot of my feminist friends were not fans and I figured I could skip it. But then I learned that Kathryn Hunter was in it, playing a madam, and I got curious. (I worked with Kathryn on a show in London a while ago so she's very dear to me.) So I watched it. Apparently there was a whole conversation around whether or not this was a feminist film. (Answer: not.) But it is, as my friend said, some men's idea of a feminist film. Which is really not the same. This is not to say that men can't make feminist films. If Lanthimos made a bio pic of Gloria Steinem, maybe that would be a feminist film. (Though maybe not if he chose to focus exclusively on her relationships with men or only her Playboy bunny stunt but otherwise it would be hard to NOT make a feminist film about Steinem.) But while this film may pass the Bechdel test on a technicality (I think the conversation between Emma Stone and Kathryn Hunter was longer than thirty seconds and not about A man – it was about how to service men so… ) I'm not sure I'd give it the point. A film in which a woman is largely on her own in the world of men does not scratch any feminist itch of mine. Women working toward equality and the benefit of other women is the main criteria for that as far as I'm concerned. Kathy and Burk react to Coppola's Megalopolis, an upcoming American epic science fiction drama film written, directed, and produced by Francis Ford Coppola. Set in an imagined modern America following a devastating disaster, the film features an ensemble cast, including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman.A longtime passion project for Coppola, who first conceived the film in 1977 and actively started developing it in 1983, Megalopolis underwent significant delays and numerous cancellations over the years, until Coppola revived the project in 2019 by spending $120 million of his own money on the film. It was filmed from November 2022 to March 2023. The film is Coppola's first directorial effort since 2011's Twixt, marking his longest gap between films.#megalopolis #francisfordcoppola #adamdriver Get early access to these reviews by joining Patreon or our YouTube channel! YouTube Membershiphttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvt8UhKoTahIIRGIwxzUVVA/joinPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/CinemondoPodcastJoin this channel to get access to fun perks like exclusive content and private Discord channel!:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvt8UhKoTahIIRGIwxzUVVA/joinOfficial Swag https://shop.spreadshirt.com/cinemondoNew videos daily!!Subscribe for the latest movie reviewshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvt8UhKoTahIIRGIwxzUVVA?sub_confirmation=1

And it wouldn't be an installment of Badass Records if we didn't examine a few of her favorite records. Those were these:Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light (2012), Woods of YpresMr. Blotto's Thread (2013)Blue Mountain (2016), Bob WeirStarset's Divisions (2019)Please consider giving Kathryn a follow on Instagram for one or both of her outfits, and definitely consider giving that Bob Weir record a spin if you aren't already familiar with it. Thank you to Kathryn and thank you to all who support the show.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are clips from a tune called, "Reba," which I lifted from the 1990 Phish album, Lawn Boy (c/o of Phish Inc.). It's historically been something of a polarizing track, but one detail remains undebatable, and that is this: Phish is the greatest rock band in American music history, and this release -- their sophomore effort -- is, without question, a badass record.

Ocena filma Izvirni naslov: Poor Things Režiser: Yorgos Lanthimos Nastopajo: Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbot, Suzy Bemba, Jerrod Carmichael, Kathryn Hunter, Vicki Pepperdine, Margaret Qualley, Hanna Schygulla Piše: Gorazd Trušnovec Bere: Igor Velše Bella je nesrečna lepotica, ki naredi samomor s skokom z mostu. Genialni zdravnik dr.

This month's theme is called PORTRAITS OF THE ARTISTS but we understand if you want to call it DENZEL MONTH because that's mostly what it is. We're capping off this week's selections of lead characters holding power with the most recent film in our Denzel celebration. We're talking about Joel Coen's 2021 adaptation of Macbeth called “THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH” and it looks pretty amazing. It stars Denzel Washington, Frances MacDormand (sorry we misspelled your name on the scroll), Kathryn Hunter & Brendan Gleeson. It was a film made on a soundstage, delayed by pandemic and had a limited theatrical release that is only streamable on Apple Plus or TV or whatever the shit it's called. I'm gonna put all these streaming services into one bigger service and call it “cable”. That's my modern dad joke. I'm not a father but your mom calls me “daddy” every night. Released in 2022, Barbarian follows Tess, a woman who rents an Air BnB in a rough part of Detroit only to find that the guy who plays Pennywise also has the place booked. While yes, this is by no means the worst thing that has ever happened to anyone in an airBnB, Tess is still understandably upset by this and so they spend an awkward night getting to know one another. It naturally turns out though, that they are not alone in there... But Barbarian isn't just a film of frights and shock value, it's also a powerful commentary on a complex social dynamic in the wake of the #MeToo movement giving the film a dimension that a lot of modern horror *CoughSMILEcough can only dream of. Amazing performances from Justin Long, Bill Skarsgard and Kathryn Hunter push this film to the top of 2022's best horror list, and an interesting slit narrative firmly cements it there, but does that actually mean that we liked it? You'll have to tune in to episode 112 of 100 Horrors to find out! Overall, Barbarian is an experience that will leave you breathless and terrified, but also give you plenty to think about long after the credits roll. So if you're a fan of horror films or just looking for an intense, adrenaline-filled ride, Barbarian is a must-see.

Hail Macbeth! It was time for the Lodgecast to take in some theater with Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth. We were tipped off to an IMAX screening and jumped at the chance. We talk all things Shakespeare and Macbeth before we proceeded to this black & white adaptation. While the play is undoubtedly four bones, we had some differing opinions on this version as we hash out what is foul and what is fair about this Joel Coen film. It stars Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. Other actors in the mix are Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Kathryn Hunter, and Brendan Gleeson.

Welcome one and all to an incredible movie review podcast! Today Matt and Mike review their first Apple TV+ Tributary film The Tragedy of Macbeth written and directed by Joel Coen. Special topics include Tool, Trek Translator, and Mike can't talk. This is definitely not the film Matt thought Mike would ever want to review. The Tragedy of Macbeth is Joel Coen's first work without his brother Ethan and he knocked it out of the park! William Shakespeare is a legend but man is it hard to understand a lot of his writing in 2022. The acting was absolutely incredible, especially Kathryn Hunter. Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand weren't too shabby either. The cinematography and sets were equally amazing. It really feels like they are performing the play just for you. Mike and Matt both agree The Tragedy of Macbeth is going to win a ton of awards and is a must see film. Mike gives the film 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt even though he dislikes Shakespeare really enjoyed this adaptation awarding it 4 out of 5 Reels. For next week Matt picked a Netflix Original that is getting a ton of award buzz, Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst. The acclaimed actor Kathryn Hunter plays all three witches in the forthcoming Hollywood adaptation of The Tragedy of Macbeth. The film is directed by Joel Coen and starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as the central couple. Hunter tells Andrew Marr that she studied the witch hunts of the 17th century and was inspired by the ‘outcast women' who survived and suffered. Her performance is rooted in something real, but also hints at something created in the mind of Macbeth. Claire Askew's latest collection of poems, How To Burn A Woman, is a cauldron full of spells, power and love. It's peopled with witches, outsiders, and women who stand out. It too traces historic atrocities and celebrates the lives of those accused of witchcraft. But it also looks at contemporary relationships, of love bordering on infatuation, and the feelings of loss, bitterness and isolation at the end of an affair. When peculiar things begin to happen in the frontier town of Springfield, Massachusetts in 1651, tensions rise and rumours spread of witches and heretics. What follows is a web of spite, paranoia and denunciation – a far cry from the English settlers' dreams of love and liberty at the dawn of the New World. The historian Malcolm Gaskill retells this dark, real-life folktale of witch-hunting in The Ruin Of All Witches. Producer: Katy Hickman (Image: Kathryn Hunter as one of the witches in The Tragedy of Macbeth, courtesy of Apple TV+)

Today we’re back with Part 2 of our NY Now and National Stationery Show recap!   As you may have heard, NSS which was previously held in May, moved to February this year to co-locate with NY Now. 39 of our Tradeshow Bootcamp alumni were exhibiting at the two shows and one of the main questions I had for them was -- how have the shows merging affected you?   It was interesting to see the different responses.   If you listen to Part 1 of this series, you’ll hear the that the NSS exhibitors mentioned specific pros and cons of the shows co-locating.  But, when I asked the NY Now exhibitors about the effects, they didn’t notice much of a difference.   Many of our NY Now exhibitors have been exhibiting at NY Now for several shows, doing both the summer and winter show.  Most used to also do the National Stationery Show when t was in May -- so three large NY shows a year. In these interviews you’ll also hear how they are branching out to other shows, and they’ll talk about the difference in these shows and why they ultimately chose NY Now over NSS.   Today’s episode features interviews with Lindsay Henry of Inklings Paperie, Kathryn Hunter of Blackbird Letterpress, Erika Caskey of Chez Gagne, Danelle Bliss of Wishbone Letterpress, Rebekah Tennis of Wild Ink Press, and Victoria Venturi of Paper Epiphanies.   I hope you enjoy this special series!
