The mountains are his spiritual home, he needs them just as much as I do. His ambition is to run in the Alps. Lenn and his wife, LaTrieva, have been married for 13 years and are the proud parents of four children: Kenyana (31), Ashante (28), Maleek (26) and Chloe(11), who was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome, a genetic disorder that mainly effects the nervous system. After serving 20 years in the Navy, Lenn became a real estate agent and also serves on the board of Parent To Parent (P2P) USA, a national non-profit that empowers and supports parents raising children with special needs. Lenn is also active on a local level with The Family Center For Children And Youth With Special Health Care Needs, a statewide parent-directed center within Children's Special Health Care Services and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.It's an uplifting and inspiring story about a blended family whose young daughter with special needs has inspired them to advocate for greater parental involvement on a local and national basis. In this episode, I speak with Maleek Jackson, owner of Maleek Jackson Fitness Boxing Gym in Philadelphia. Maleek spent 10 years in prison from ages 16-26 and in our conversation, we contextualize criminal behavior, interrogating how, for those in the streets, it is not about “right” or “wrong” but about doing what you need to do to survive with the limited opportunities available. We discuss how chaotic environments, resulting from racist systems and structures, tend to muffle positive messages promoted through community-based programs, mentors, and old heads. Maleek describes the individuals who influenced him throughout his life, for better or worse, and emphasizes the multifacetedness of each individual's identity. Ultimately, this conversation serves to humanize those so often demonized, complicate deficits-based narratives about those deemed “bad” and provide insights into the influential and often conflicting roles of mentors and environments.

A competition to name, in our opinion, the best tasting Texas Craft beer (both light and dark).
