It's shaping up to be a massive year for Kiwi IndyCar driver Marcus Armstrong. He's joined up with Meyer Shank Racing, joining Felix Rosenqvist in the team's lineup – competing on all the oval, road, and street races. Armstrong comes from a background of F4, Formula 3 and Formula 2, and told Mike Hosking that over the years he feels like he's grown better at working with his team. “There's 350 people that we work closely with, and making sure that we communicate properly and explain our thoughts of how we want the car to be developed without, y'know... involving your ego too much.” “So, being very self-critical and honest about what we can do better from a team perspective, and communicating properly. I think that's probably the thing I've improved in the most.” In IndyCar, you're often racing at speeds averaging about 240 miles an hour, a speed that's hard for the human brain to keep up with. “You need to keep your eyes 200 meters further ahead than what you're used to,” Armstrong told Hosking. “If you sort of look where you normally look, you're already past that point.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How good is the news about Liam Lawson. Regardless of whether you're a Sergio Perez fan, what you think of Max Verstappen as a teammate, or of Liam Lawson as a driver – he has achieved something extraordinary, something a select few accomplish, and secured himself a coveted F1 seat for 2025. This is truly something to be celebrated. We've always struggled as New Zealanders to know how to deal with Kiwis who have great success. We love our poppies to a point, and then we tend to tear them down, or at least knock them about a bit. Just ask them. So while I don't propose a seismic cultural shift and lose our generally humble and down to earth attitude, I do think a shift in how we acknowledge success would be a good thing. If we're to become the best little country in the world, we need people, in whatever field they are in, to aspire to be the best. And yes, that sometimes requires talking yourself up to be a winner. Liam Lawson knows better than anyone the environment he's heading into - the money, politics, publicity, and egos involved. No team is going to pick the guy who says, ‘yeah, if there's a space available, I'd love it'. They want someone who says, ‘I can do this, I want to be the best and I will do what it takes on and off the track'. To be a successful F1 driver you need an extraordinary amount of confidence in yourself and your ability. It is a mental game as much as a physical and technical one. In response to the announcement Liam Lawson said, “To be announced as an Oracle Red Bull Racing Driver is a lifelong dream for me, this is something I've wanted and worked towards since I was eight years old.” It reminded me of a conversation I had with Kiwi Indie Car driver Marcus Armstrong. I really enjoyed my conversation with him – and I asked him why New Zealand drivers were doing so well around the world, when they often don't have the money or connections to help them. He said to me that it's because we sacrifice so much to do it, we must succeed, it makes us want to be the best. Liam has wanted this since he was 8. Marcus left NZ at 12 to follow his dream. Their success isn't a fluke. A lot of people have helped them get to where they are, but ultimately, it's them behind the wheel making things happen. They're role models for other young kiwis, encouraging them to be audacious, dream big, and just go for it. So to all the haters who came out online and had a go at Liam Lawson after Red Bull's decision to hire him, I say Merry Christmas. No one cares. I for one can't wait for the 2025 season to kick off – how much more fun is it going to be having a young Kiwi to support. LISTEN ABOVE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Conor Daly's “have helmet, will travel” 2024 tour continues as he was in competition at last weekend's 8 Hours of Indianapolis Intercontinental GT Challenge event. He joins co-host Chase Holden to discuss the nuances that he and Alex Palou experienced in making the transition from a Dallara IndyCar to a GT3 sports car. He explains that ultimately a fuel pick-up failure took him and the Random Vandals team out of contention after running in the top-five for most of the event. They also discuss the star-studded endurance kart race which took place at New Castle Motorsports Park, IndyCar's announcement of the 2026 Arlington Street Race and the upcoming hybrid test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The newest member of the Meyer Shank Racing team Marcus Armstrong joins the show to discuss how the new technical alliance between MSR and Chip Ganassi Racing has moved him to the number-66 Dallara for the 2025 IndyCar season. Marcus explains that he has worked with MSR veteran Felix Rosenqvist in the past and the integration from team to team has been smooth thus far. He also opens up about the difficulty in adapting to oval racing after spending the majority of his career progressing up the Formula ladder system in Europe. Marcus explains that even though he had resources like Dario Franchitti at CGR, he as a driver still had to go out on the track and perform, and his first experiences at tracks like Indianapolis and Milwaukee felt like a whirlwind. Marcus is excited to be a part of the IndyCar Series though and hopes that the championship trail will take them to new venues across the globe in the future.

Also, the guys weigh in on the FBI raid of Rahal Letterman Lanigan.2024 IndyCar Champion Alex Palou stops by the show to talk about how he clinched his third title in four years during the Nashville finale weekend. After a rough qualifying effort and a grid penalty, Alex knew he had the odds stacked against him to stay ahead of Will Power in the final points standings. Alex explains that he was relieved when he heard about Will's seat belt failure and unplanned pit stop, but was disappointed that they did not get to race each other properly for the title. Alex and Conor relate over how the race at Nashville played out and what made it fun, but different from other oval races this season. Finally, Alex talks about his goal to win an oval race next season and what it will take to stay ahead of the competition.
Tonight, on Trackside, there's so much to talk about we had to skip the intro! Kevin and Curt breakdown the new IndyCar charter system, and shuffling team lineups that were recently announced. Kevin goes to the X Box and answers listener questions. They talk about Rinus Veekay departing from Carpenter, and ECR's lineup going into next season. Later, Curt and Kevin answer more listener questions, including if Rinus Veekay's career is over in IndyCar, and where he could possibly go. They talk about the driver lineup at Rahal, and where Linus Lundqvist could go. Kevin believes Linus could go to Rahal as Rossi will be at Carpenter. They answer a listener question about what the perfect number of races on the schedule, and some new tracks that could get added to the calendar. To round out the first hour, Kevin previews the next hour. In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt delve into the charter system, and give the ins and outs of the system, what it means for the sport, what's good about it, bad about it, and more. They talk about the Dale Coyne rule, and how teams will be capped at 3 drivers per season. Prema will also not have a charter but will be able to start every race next year outside of the 500, without risk of getting bumped. They also speculate if Dale Coyne is looking to get out of racing. Later, Kevin and Curt talk about Marcus Armstrong moving to the #66 Meyer Shank Honda. Dr. Greg Chernoff joins the show to talk to Kevin and Curt about the Survivors of Violence Foundation, an event that many USAC drivers will be at to help raise money for the foundation. After an unpredictable, weather-filled weekend at Road America, Conor Daly and co-host Chase Holden return to Speed Street to recap the historic action. On the IndyCar side of the event card in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, race fans saw rain plague practice two and most of qualifying, leading to a spectacular crash by Josef Newgarden that halted the Fast Six session as Colton Herta was in the midst of his final run. The result was Ganassi Racing rookie Linus Lundqvist scoring his first career IndyCar pole, a position he wouldn't hold long as a fracas broke out on the opening lap of the grand prix. Conor explains that Lunqvist's own teammate Marcus Armstrong was to blame for the pile-up that saw several contenders, including Colton Herta have their race days become much more complicated. In the end, race strategy prevailed, and a decision to stay out an extra lap before the last pit cycle brought Will Power to the front of a Penske podium sweep, snapping his two year winless streak. The IndyNXT Series also experienced historical happenings as Jamie Chadwick brought home the victory at Road America, making her the first female to win in the series since Pippa Mann in 2010. Jamie joins the show to discuss her victory and what it means for her career and other women coming up in the motorsports ranks. She explains that a lot of her transition from the W Series to the IndyNXT was spent preparing for the physicality of the racecars, which she explains are bigger and more powerful than she had experienced before. Jamie credits her engineer and driving coach with making adjustments in the car that have helped her quickly adapt, and after a 12th place points effort in her rookie season last year she had begun to hit her stride in 2024. Jamie expresses that while she'd love to race Formula One in the future, she is on the path to race in IndyCar and feels that this year's IndyNXT field is great preparation for the challenges that lie ahead.
Phil and Josh return for E223 of the GSP to discuss all the craziness at Detroit, Gateway and elsewhere in the world of motorsports. In Detroit, Honda powered IndyCar's seemed to dominate in Chevy's house with the podium swept by the Ohio/California gang. Scott Dixon put on another fuel saving doctoral dissertation but had heat from fellow Kiwi and teammate Marcus Armstrong and former teammate Marcus Ericsson at the end. Issues throughout the field and eight cautions in the first 73 laps marred what basically became a survival test. Augustin Canapino and the Argentinian fanbase are out of order after threatening Theo Pourchaire. When the drivers are wishing and hoping to go back to Belle Isle, the track is bad. NASCAR Cup and Trucks were at Gateway while the XFinity drivers were at Portland for road course action. Austin Cindric was the beneficiary of issues for both Christopher Bell and teammate Ryan Blaney, taking his first win since winning the 2022 Daytona 500. This was not a great day for the points contenders in general, but there's still plenty of races left. Stewart-Haas Racing will cease to exist at the end of 2024, after Tony and Gene made that announcement to the team after the 600. Phil and Josh give their thoughts at the end of this organization along with where some of the key people will go. With Snoreoma upcoming, that will be Faux last telecast of 2024. Other than Harvick and Mike Joy, is there anything redeeming? Shane Van Gisbergen became a NASCAR XFinity winner at Portland, passing dominant presence Justin Allgaier late in the race. All three Kaulig cars finished in the top 10, and SVG locks himself into the playoffs. Another person who is locked into the playoffs is Corey Heim after a fourth win of the Truck Series regular season. We're delighted to welcome a special guest to The Race IndyCar Podcast this week, as Indianapolis 500-winning engineer Angela Ashmore of Chip Ganassi Racing joins the show. From watching short-track racing as a child to engineering in NASCAR, Ashmore has a diverse resume that most recently led her to winning the 500 with Marcus Ericsson as his assistant engineer, before being promoted to lead engineer for Marcus Armstrong at the team in 2024. Ashmore discusses how well the job of assistant prepares you for the lead engineering role, and looks at some of the key areas where there's big gains to be made as an engineer.
