In 1997, two women were mutilated and murdered on the grounds of a psychiatric hospital in Grangegorman, Ireland. Only months later, a young couple named Catherine and Carl Doyle were slaughtered in their countryside home in front of their four young children. All four of the victims were murdered at the hands of a young father named Mark Nash, who would eventually become known as one of Ireland's most violent and gruesome killers of all time.------>Thanks to our sponsor CEREBRAL - AFFORDABLE ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, INCLUDING PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE. [REBROADCAST FROM February 17, 2021] In January 2019, the artist Glenn Ligon was asked by curator Okwui Enwezor to serve as an advisor to an exhibition he had conceived of titled, “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America.” While Enwezor passed away on March 15, 2019, the exhibition was able to be realized after his death with the help of an advisory team, which included Glenn Ligon, Mark Nash, and Naomi Beckwith. This segment was picked by our Producer Ursula Sommer.
Russell & Robert speak to leading artist Glenn Ligon from his studio in New York. We discuss the New Museum's current exhibition “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” and his collaboration with the late curator Okwui Enwezor. We discover Glenn's interest in artist's work such as Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Rauscheberg, David Hammons and the lasting influence of Steve Reich’s audio work 'Come Out' (1966). We learn how his work has referenced forgotten texts from history, inspiration from literature in particular writers including Zora Neale Hurston and the Harlem Renaissance, James Baldwin and Alice Walker. We discuss Andy Warhol's 'Shadows' (1978-79) painting, and hear how eclipsed light is a central theme in his own work, as well as ideas of beauty, his early interest in abstract expressionism and pottery classes he attended as a child. Running until June 6, 2021, the New Museum presents “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” an exhibition originally conceived by Okwui Enwezor (1963-2019) for the New Museum, and presented with curatorial support from advisors Naomi Beckwith, Massimiliano Gioni, Glenn Ligon, and Mark Nash. “Grief and Grievance” will be an intergenerational exhibition, bringing together thirty-seven artists working in a variety of mediums who have addressed the concept of mourning, commemoration, and loss as a direct response to the national emergency of racist violence experienced by Black communities across America. The exhibition will further consider the intertwined phenomena of Black grief and a politically orchestrated white grievance, as each structures and defines contemporary American social and political life. “Grief and Grievance” will comprise works encompassing video, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, sound, and performance made in the last decade, along with several key historical works and a series of new commissions created in response to the concept of the exhibition.Follow @GlennLigon and @NewMuseum on Instagram. The show will be on view on all three main exhibition floors of the New Museum from February 17 through June 6 and features work by 37 artists. Enwezor viewed these works as illustrative of the concept of mourning as a complex political act – one that serves a critical role in Black life in the US.

We had the pleasure of interviewing In Parallel over Zoom video! The seeds of In Parallel were planted late at night almost 5+ years ago in the back room of a picture frame shop. With nothing more than a looped electronic drum sample and a few guitars, the first notes became the framework of the song "Bridge and Tunnel." This particular song and its lyric "walk through waves and wade where others won't - choose your words, say what others don't" became a mission statement of sorts - a musical rebirth for its four members. It took multiple recordings for the band to get all the sounds on their debut EP 'Broken Codes' correct - so much so that they scrapped the first two versions entirely. The band was inspired by their love of dark 80’s pop and 90’s shoegaze and post-hardcore - creating a sound that aims to balance contrastingly melodic, expansive and ambient moments. In Parallel consists of Lance Black, Jesse Fine, Ryan Parrish and Mark Nash. The band recorded the EP in Nashville with the help of their most devoted fans from previous projects (Celebrity/Hopesfall) through a crowdfunding campaign. Bypassing the traditional structure of the music industry gave the three-piece group the freedom to lean into technology, ultimately treading new territory both sonically and lyrically. In Parallel are debuting the first track and corresponding music lyric video off their upcoming new EP “Fashioner” out September 4th on Wiretap Records. We want to hear from you! This week our psychological profile is of Gerard Schaefer, a self-confessed serial killer who claims to have murdered up to thirty women, though he was only sent to prison for the 1972 murders of two teenagers - Susan Place, aged 17 and Georgia Jessup, aged 16. Both of them had been tortured before being murdered and buried at Hutchinson Island, Florida. At the times of the murders, Schaefer was a Floridian Deputy Sheriff and was previously a police officer. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Enablers Of Impact ~ Pastor Mark Nash by Equippers Church Essex
Mark Nash is quite a humble guy. As you’ll hear in our chat, Mark describes Nash Business Systems as a team of software developers, based in Redditch - but they are so much more than that. Going back to 2009, Mark did some work for his Dad - and it was that family link that kick started the business, and started Mark on his ScaleUp journey. Over the past 10 years, Nash Business Systems has grown from very much a one man entity to one with a small group of specialists, and a steadily growing base of clients. Mark says that in the beginning he was lucky with clients, with work coming in, and taking on new staff, but it’s only when you listen to him that you realise that luck had little to do with it, and that Mark’s work ethic and determination are more at the root of Nash Business Systems success In this episode, Mark talks to Kevin Brent about his ScaleUp journey so far. Amongst other things they cover: - Being very clear about the problem that you’re solving for your customer - The benefits to having your own office, rather than working from home – and when to make the move - Finding the balance between being helpful - and having customers take the mick! - The challenges of scaling up in a relatively short space of time. It’s interesting to hear Mark talk about his ScaleUp journey, not least because he’s incredibly honest about where the holes are in his knowledge - and how he doesn’t always have the answer about what the business should be, and where it should be going next. As always, there’s plenty to take away whatever stage you are at in your ScaleUp journey You can find Mark at: mark@nashbusinesssystems.co.uk

Dublin: 1997. Three women occupy number 1 Orchard View, an assisted living facility for former patients of the nearby St Brendan's Psychiatric Hospital. On the night of March 6th of that year, two of the women, Sylvia Sheils and Mary Callanan, were brutally murdered in their rooms. They were discovered the next morning by their housemate Ann Murnagh, and a hunt for the killer began. The Gardai soon heard that a young heroin addict who slept rough in the Grangegorman area may be responsible for the heinous crimes. Dean Lyons was questioned by the Gardai and promptly confessed to the killings. But was this man capable of the horrible crimes he had confessed to, or did the Gardai have the wrong man? There would be two further murders before the case was solved.... Find us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/mensreapod/) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/MensReaPod) ! Mark Nash.
Anne McElvoy investigates the role of culture within historic Soviet expansionism and current Russian geopolitics. She talks to Charles Clover, author of Black Wind, White Snow: The Rise of Russia's New Nationalism about Eurasianism, an old idea with considerable traction in Putin's Russia and why bad ideas tend to win out over good ones . Historian Polly Jones, author of Myth Memory Trauma: Rethinking the Soviet past, 1953-70 and Clem Cecil, in-coming Director of Pushkin House, are in the studio to discuss the extent of Soviet interest in soft power alongside Mark Nash, curator of Red Africa and Ian Christie, co-curator of Unexpected Eisenstein, two new exhibitions in London. The continuing cultural legacy of Cold War relations between the Soviet Union and Africa is the subject of Red Africa, a season of film, art exhibition, talks and events, runs at Calvert 22 in London while at the same time Unexpected Eisenstein, a new exhibition at GRAD gallery in London, tells the story of the anglophile tendencies of a the great Soviet film-maker, Sergei Eisenstein. Eisenstein, whose epic and patriotic films Battleship Potemkin, Alexander Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible, together constitute a visual retrospective of Russian power, was himself hugely influenced by British writers from Shakespeare to Dickins. But as Anne McElvoy hears, the director went on to influence generations of British artists and film-makers, one legacy of his six-week sojourn in London in 1929. It was, as Christie explains, a trip ordered but not precisely sponsored, by Stalin. Producer: Jacqueline Smith
