Matt J. Navo - Executive Director of the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE): Intensive Assistance Model & Community Engagement Initiative. This is episode 612 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Matt J. Navo serves as the Executive Director for the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE). His knowledge and expertise in systems improvement comes from over three decades of experience as a K-12 educator and leader. Matt served as the Superintendent of Sanger Unified School District. Before assuming the role of Superintendent, he was a special education teacher, secondary instructor, counselor, resource teacher, junior high learning director, high school assistant principal, elementary and alternative education principal, director of special education, and area administrator. Matt J. describes his family tree as “littered with problem drinkers”, of which he became one all too quickly. As an only child, Matt grew up in a home where verbal and physical abuse reigned supreme. By the time his parents got divorced, his coping mechanisms included locking himself in his room with books and baseball cards upon which he could obsess. Such means of escape followed him into his teenage years when he found alcohol as a ready-made solution to his feelings of isolation, fear, and shame. Curiously, at a relatively young age, he reflected on his own drinking and wondered if he needed AA. But such introspection soon passed as he continued to drink more heavily throughout his college years and early business career. With drinking-related problems mounting, Matt's solitary drinking damaged his marriage and job to the extent that suicide appeared an attractive option. Subsequently, though diagnosed with clinical depression, the prescribed medications did little to help as he continued to drink. Financial ruin, in the form of personal bankruptcy finally backed him into a corner from which there was no escape and Matt entered the rooms of AA in 2014. Finding that some of his obsessive nature accompanied him into AA, Matt set about mastering the literature to the point of self-isolation in the Program. Fortunately, some old-timers convinced Matt to get involved in a balanced Program with service and fellowship as the core elements in his sobriety. Since then, Matt's involvement in AA has emanated from the center of the Program. In addition to regular meetings, Matt co-hosts the podcast, Sober Friends, on which I've had the opportunity to appear. Considering his background, Matt's success in Alcoholics Anonymous is encouraging evidence of the healing and gifts AA holds for those who really want it and who are willing to do the work. Matt's personal level of contentment correlates beautifully with the level of service work he does within his Program and admirably reflects his desire to carry the message to other alcoholics. Many alcoholics have had to deal with the effects of isolation both in active addition and after. Especially during COVID-19, when you have to social distance, it's easy to hide away and isolate from everyone in the name of good health. It's easy to stay home and be comfortable isolating in general and make excuses to not go to meetings or call people in the program. Matt J, John I and Steve C talked about their own issues with isolation and the trap it can ensnare us in.

It is easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of the moment. Matt J had a storm come through his town of South Windsor, CT and it left him without power and without some siding. It could have been worse as just feet from where he lives, trees were down damaging cars and homes. Seeing his kids freaking out, Matt freaked out on the inside instead of calling people in the program or using his tool.John I joins him and they talk about how to be prepared for the unexpected moment and how to get through tough moments. Matt J has been diving into the world of Sober Instagram and where some other social media sites are cesspools, , The sober society on Instagram seems to be something totally different. It is a place where you can find positive and inspirational messages of sobriety. Matt found Morgan at https://www.instagram.com/single.40.sober.surviving/ and found a post about how she was "Sober Shamed" by a friend and how hurtful it was. Morgan has been sober for years, but did not find 12 step groups to be her path to recovery. She has focused on staying sober by surrounding herself with likeminded people, therapy and the positivity on Instagram. Matt found recovery a different way and also believes that no one path has a monopoly on recovery. In this show, Morgan talks about how she drank in secret and how she came from a long line of alcoholics. She discusses the support her late father provided, what caused her to leave AA and how live has improved. If Morgan can help one person, she feels her talk is worth it.
Part of working the steps in Alcoholics Anonymous is clearing away the wreckage of the past, clearing away the harms you've done to others and the mess you've made of your life because of your addiction. Complacency can set in as life gets better with a recovery lifestyle and the threat of changes can cause anxiety. The idea of Rock Bottom can be a misnomer and can be a hindrance to finding recovery. It can be easy to compare someone else's bottom to your own and therefore decided I'm, "not that bad." Matt J's father passed away at the end of January. He had not seen him since December 25, 1982 at the age of 7. Matt's father had untreated alcoholism and it led to his parent's divorce. It also led to Matt's obsession with never becoming an alcoholic and yet failing. One of Matt J's business heroes has been Tony Hsieh of Zappos. Hsieh started his own business, cashing it out for millions to start a company that sold shoes on the internet. That company, Zappos, because not only the leader in online shoe sales, but the word class customer service emulated by business of all types. But Hsieh hid a dark side, an addiction to alcohol and later other drugs as the pandemic of 2020 caused him to retreat from life and from his job as CEO of Zappos. He tragically died in November 2020 in a fire, likely caused by his desire to test the limits of how much oxygen he needed to survive.
