Biography Richard Safeer, MD, earned his BS in Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University under the tutelage of T. Colin Campbell, author of the China Study, before attending medical school at State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Safeer is the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-being at Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he leads the Healthy at Hopkins employee health and well-being strategy. He also holds faculty appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to arriving at Hopkins, Dr. Safeer practiced family medicine in Northern Virginia. He was then on faculty at the George Washington University, serving as the Residency Director of Family Medicine in his last year at the institution. He was the Medical Director of an Occupational Health Center in Baltimore and Wellness Director for the Mid-Atlantic region of the parent company, just before starting at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Baltimore, Maryland as the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine. He has been credited by some for bringing ‘wellness’ in to the realm of responsibilities of the managed care industry. He also led CareFirst BCBS to be among the first cohort of health plans to be accredited for Wellness by NCQA. He holds faculty appointments in both the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as well as the School of Public Health. He continues to see patients one day a week in the Pediatric Cardiology department. Dr. Safeer is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, The American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and the American College of Preventive Medicine. He served on the board of directors for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. He is on the New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst Insight Council. An NIH study from last year found that new cases of chronic pain in the United States occur more often than new cases of many other common serious conditions like diabetes, depression, and high blood pressure. What's more, among people with chronic pain, nearly two-thirds are still suffering a year later. Naturopathic clinician Timothy Schwaiger, ND, utilizes a comprehensive, integrative approach to treat and heal chronic pain. In this interview, he discusses diet, lifestyle, dietary supplements, and other integrative interventions he has found to be successful that are also backed by evidence-informed research. Dr. Schwaiger is currently the Chief Medical Director and Executive Director of Clinical Operations at Bastyr University. About the Expert Timothy Schwaiger, ND, MA, received his naturopathic degree from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona, and completed a two-year residency there in Family Medicine. He has a master of arts degree from Webster University in Health Care Management. Schwaiger currently serves as chief medical director, executive director of clinical operations, and professor of naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University. He stresses that true organizational change goes beyond superficial wellness programs, advocating for a fundamental shift in how companies view and support employee health.   Dr. Safeer highlights the critical role of leadership in modeling healthy behaviors and integrating well-being into the core business strategy. He challenges current practices, noting that less than 3% of Americans live fully healthy lifestyles, largely due to ineffective corporate support systems. His advice to HR leaders and executives is clear: prioritize genuine health habits and create a culture where well-being is as fundamental as any business operation. Today's guest is Dr. Shairi Turner, the Chief Health Officer of Crisis Text Line-- a global nonprofit organization providing free and confidential text-based mental health support and crisis intervention. Dr. Turner is a Stanford Alum, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine graduate and Harvard-trained internist and pediatrician with a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. As Chief Health Officer, she leads the organization's external policy, advocacy and partnership initiatives related to mental health. Dr. Turner truly understands the impact of trauma and has an extensive resume that includes over a decade of advocacy on juvenile justice, public health, disproportionate minority confinement, trauma histories of incarcerated women and the neurobiology of trauma. Prior to Crisis Text Line, Dr. Turner was the first Chief Medical Director of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, served as Deputy Secretary for Health and Director of the Office of Minority Health for the Florida Department of Health, served as a faculty consultant for the National Center for Trauma Informed Care, and most recently was Project Co-Lead for the US Office of Women's Health-funded Trauma Informed Medicine eCase. Lots of programs and benefits most often don't lead to a more well employee. However, when employers install a culture of health in the workplace, employees are more than twice as likely to reach their well-being goals than employees who are still subject to a workplace wellness model that formed more than 60 years ago. Richard Safeer, MD, earned his BS in Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University under the tutelage of T. Colin Campbell, author of the China Study, before attending medical school at State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Safeer is the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-being at Johns Hopkins Medicine, where he leads the Healthy at Hopkins employee health and well-being strategy. He also holds faculty appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to arriving at Hopkins, Dr. Safeer practiced family medicine in Northern Virginia. He was then on faculty at the George Washington University, serving as the Residency Director of Family Medicine in his last year at the institution. He was the Medical Director of an Occupational Health Center in Baltimore and Wellness Director for the Mid-Atlantic region of the parent company, just before starting at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Baltimore, Maryland as the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine. He has been credited by some for bringing ‘wellness' in to the realm of responsibilities of the managed care industry. He also led CareFirst BCBS to be among the first cohort of health plans to be accredited for Wellness by NCQA. He holds faculty appointments in both the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as well as the School of Public Health. He continues to see patients one day a week in the Pediatric Cardiology department. Dr. Safeer is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, The American College of Lifestyle Medicine and the American College of Preventive Medicine. According to the 2020 Gartner Well-Being Benchmarking Survey, 70% of companies have introduced new well-being benefits or increased the amount of existing well-being benefits in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To sustain momentum in developing a healthy workforce, organizations must continue to create an environment where employees value well-being. Dr. Richard Safeer, author of “A Cure for the Common Company,” joins the Talent Angle to make the case that organizations should go beyond well-being programs to create a culture of well-being. He offers practical guidance to help HR leaders establish the norms and environment that supports workforce health. Dr. Richard Safeer currently serves as the Chief Medical Director of Employee Health and Well-Being for Johns Hopkins Medicine where he leads the Healthy at Hopkins employee health and well-being strategy.  Previously, he was the Medical Director of Preventive Medicine for CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield in Baltimore, Maryland. In January 2023, with publisher Wiley, Dr. Safeer released "A Cure for the Common Company: A Well-Being Prescription for a Happier, Healthier, and More Resilient Workforce.” Jessica Knight is a vice president of research in the Gartner HR practice. She leads research teams to identify best practices and new opportunities for addressing HR executives' most urgent challenges.
