Today's episode is a dedicatation to my ancestors, Santisima Muerte, Mictecacihuatl, Mictlantecuhtli and Chalchiuhtlicue. November 1st I had a beautiful and powerful dream where Mictlantechuhtli appeared alongside three of my ancestors. In this download I felt the urge to create a series of episodes and delve into the indigenous roots of Santa Muerte. It would be a great honor to talk about this beautiful journey that many of us may not be aware of. Throughout Mesoamerican culture, they practiced human sacrifice and ritual cannibalism to placate the god of the underworld Mictlantecuhtli ( Mik-Lan-the-klulee). Mictlantecuhtli  is usually portrayed in art as a skeleton or covered in bones with red spots representing blood. He wears a skull mask, bone ear plugs, a costume of owl feathers and even a necklace of eyeballs. He has curly black hair and powerful eyes which allow him to penetrate the gloom of the underworld.  The owl was a symbol of a bad omen and death. Durante el día de muertos, en plena celebración de la vida, se le cantan las mañanitas al ente que viene a recogernos cuando nuestro tiempo en el mundo terrenal ha terminado; viste una túnica con capucha y carga una guadaña entre sus dedos. Lo han llamado de muchas formas, Parca, Huesuda, Catrina… pero son muchos quienes la conocen como la Santa Muerte. El culto a la Santa Muerte, tal como lo conocemos hoy en día, es el resultado de la mezcla y el encuentro de varias culturas que se dio en el México antiguo tras la llegada de los españoles. El primer antecedente se localiza en los años del México prehispánico con el culto a Mictlantecuhtli, el Señor del Inframundo mexica, el Mictlán, tierra de alebrijes, Xoloitzcuintles y mariposas negras. Con la aparición del catolicismo, además del vudú y la santería que trajeron los esclavos afrocubanos y afroahaitianos, surgieron distintos cultos y rituales a la muerte, en los cuales se adoraban figuras de esqueletos que tenían poderes sobrenaturales. Hablamos de todo sin saber de nada

**Episode 1: Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) - Show Notes *Episode Summary * In our first episode, we talk about Día de los Muertos, Mexico's unique take on All Souls and All Saints Days. We discuss the pre-Hispanic history of the holiday and whether it is truly Catholic (we say Yes!). Our sources are listed down in the next section, especially the book The Skeleton at the Feast by Elizabeth Carmichael and Chloë Sayer. Here is a quick summary of what we covered in this episode: Many traditions now connected with Day of the Dead go back to Mexico's Native American roots. The Aztecs believed "the nature of life was strictly governed by the need to propitiate the gods." (Skeleton at the Feast, page 28). The Aztec god who ruled the underworld was named Mictlantecuhtli and depicted as a skeleton. The Aztecs celebrated two month long festivals called the "Little Feast of the Dead" and the "Great Feast of the Dead" in the summer. Practices such as decorating altars with flowers and food offerings go back to these festivals. When the Spaniards arrived, they brought Catholic missionaries with them, especially the Franciscans. The Catholic missionaries tried to win converts partly by transferring some aspects of the Aztec holidays over to similar Christian holidays. This is how the summertime feasts of the dead ended up transferred to November 2, All Soul's Day. Attending mass, tolling of bells, and prayers for the souls of the dead were added to the Day of the Dead celebration. However, the holiday continued to be celebrated differently in the Native American countryside versus the more Mestizo urban areas. So, was the Catholic conversion of this holiday complete and authentic? Listen to the podcast to hear what we thought! The images of playful, laughing skeletons (calaveras in Spanish) that are connected with Day of the Dead have a rich history of their own. Images of skulls and skeletons go all the way back to the pre-Hispanic past in Mexico and can be seen in surviving Aztec books, such as the Codex Borgia. The skulls were updated by the influential early 20th century engraver José Guadalupe Posada (see The Skeleton at the Feast, pages 125- 127 for famous examples). There is even a visual reference to Posada's famous engraving La Catrina in the 2017 Disney/Pixar movie Coco. Other symbols connected with Day of the Dead include the family ofrenda, an altar where mementos and pictures of loved ones are placed; flowers, especially marigolds; elaborately cut paper banners (see Skeleton at the Feast, page 32 for an ancient example); and sweets such as pan de muerte. These scholars carried on the study of the ancient religious thinking of the Toltecs, which Tlacaelel had transformed into a mystical exaltation of war. Despite the popularity of the cult of the war-god, Huitzilopochtli, the tlamatinime preserved the old belief in a single supreme god, who was known under a variety of names. Sometimes he was called Tloque-Nahuaque, “Lord of the Close Vicinity,” sometimes Ipalnemohuani, “Giver of Life,” sometimes Moyocoyatzin, “He who Creates Himself.” He also had two aspects, one masculine and one feminine. But only one of them can be telling him the truth and he can't trust either one. Carter's solution? Kill them both. If he wants to get out of this situation with his soul intact, he'll have to go to Mictlan, the Aztec land of the dead, and take down a couple of death gods while facing down the worst trials the place has to offer him: his own sins.
