A little gritty political drama, a little technicolor musical, a little revolutionary politics, a little ahead-of-its-time queer representation…Kiss of the Spider Woman has been a novel, a play, an Oscar-winning movie, a Tony-winning Broadway musical, and now a Bill Condon movie musical starring Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna, and relative newcomer Tonatiuh. LA-based film critic Carlos Aguilar joins us to get into the enduring allure of Spider Woman, and to name some bleak movies that could be jazzed up with a little old-timey movie-musical interlude. What's GoodAlonso - Bulgarian State Woman Choir on Johnny Carson in 1990Drea - Bed Bands (wholesome)Carlos - New episode of Storage WarsKevin - The Craft at CinespiaITIDICApple TV Streaming Drops “+” From its NameThe TiVo Era Has Ended, Officially NowAnnie Hall Returning to Cinemas in Honor of Diane KeatonStaff PicksAlonso - Orwell: 2+2=5Drea - Blue MoonCarlos - It Was Just an AccidentKevin - Battle Royale Follow us on BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, or LetterboxdWithKevin AveryDrea ClarkAlonso DuraldeProduced by Marissa FlaxbartSr. Producer Laura Swisher

Loosely based on the Oscar-winning 1985 drama of the same name and DIRECTLY based on the Tony-winning '90's musical of the same name, this prison drama/musical tells the story of a drifter named Molina (Tonatiuh) and a political prisoner named Valentin (Diego Luna) who share a cell in an Argentinian prison in the midst of a revolution which occurred in the early '80's. Together they share a unlikely bond as Molina helps pass the time by recounting his favorite movie named "Kiss of the Spider Woman" starring his favorite actress Ingrid Luna. Ingrid is played by Jennifer Lopez who also portrays the titular spider woman. And what results is a genuinely unique blend of genres featuring several memorable song and dance numbers....often lead by J-Lo herself. This latest version of a classic story was both directed and adapted for the big screen by Oscar-winner Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Kinsey, Gods and Monsters).Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Immigration is in the news, in our communities, and sometimes in our own families. But how do we explain it to kids without scaring them? Elise Hu talks with comedian and writer Negin Farsad about what her daughter has noticed, and what Negin chooses to share. Children's author Duncan Tonatiuh joins to share how his book Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote helps kids understand the dangers and resilience behind migration stories. From undocumented families to family separation headlines, this conversation shows parents how to talk about immigration as part of our shared story, while giving children hope, safety, and practical ways to understand their world.Key takeaways for parents:Show the kids in your life that immigration is part of America's shared story. When tough headlines come up, acknowledge them and offer age-appropriate context instead of avoiding the subject.Use books and stories to build empathy, showing both the risks and the resilience in migration journeys.Talk about civic values like rights, community, and responsibility.Balance safety with normalcy: give kids tools like memorizing a phone number while still letting them enjoy the fun of childhood.⏱️ Timestamps:Keep the conversation going at home with our FREE Conversation Kit companion guide: https://delivery.shopifyapps.com/-/ed0fd48c366bfcc5/f9e9fe86fd9c42cfFollow Negin Farsad on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/neginfarsadFollow Duncan Tonatiuh on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/duncan.tonatiuh/New episodes every Tuesday:YouTube: https://swap.fm/l/P8iCjNFnIWI7kTmU0vmkApple: https://swap.fm/l/kCnCRNdWkpuYYbyzyE77Spotify: https://swap.fm/l/SOQe4gSHh3vVIwPGFDetOr wherever you get your podcasts.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Documenting a culture can be a daunting process, especially when it involves a history of conquest and colonialism. Synthesizing such a complex and traumatic past in a contemporary narrative is a formidable task, requiring extensive researchh and dedicated planning. This is the back story to today's podcast. Above photograph © Juan Brenner For the seventh chapter in our monthly series, Picturing World Cultures, we speak with Guatemalan photographer Juan Brenner about his recent projects in the country's Western Highlands. Our chat begins with Brenner's introduction to photography as a youth, and the protective bubble surrounding him during the country's brutal civil war. He left Guatemala at age 20 to forge a career as a fashion photographer in New York, which filters into our discussions about portraiture and photo gear. But our primary focus is on Brenner's recent personal projects, created after his return to Guatemala, and an epiphany he had about the idea of “Indigenous Power.” Listen in as he describes how this concept was subsequently called into question. You'll gain insight into the unequal power quotient that comes with being a “Mickey Mouse” photographer and discover how critical aspects of communication extend well beyond the basic structure of language. As Brenner notes during our chat, “You have to be really careful just being a photographer. It's so colonialist, you know, having a camera. You have this big robot that you stick in people's faces. You have this advantage. And, for me, it's really important to think about that a lot.” If you haven't already listened, check out all the episodes of our Picturing World Cultures podcast series here. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When it feels like everything is lost, how do we find guidance? In this incredibly difficult and painful week, we've been seeking wisdom, prayer and spiritual guidance. As we get ready to return to Season 4, we wanted to take a step back with a “retro” episode, pulling from our archives from Season 2.In this episode, Five and Nine talks with Angela Mictlanxochitl Anderson Guerrero, who runs Lideramos, a Latino leadership organization in the US, and who is a practicing abuela, or grandmother, in the Danza de la Luna lineage, a transterritorial Mexica ceremonial practice.Angela Mictlanxochitl talks about the four components of her thoughtful engagement framework—intention, responsibility, reciprocity and care—, the role of prayer and spirituality in leadership, being authentic in the workplace and how we care for our physical, psychological and emotional health. She closes with a sound and prayer offering in collaboration with artist Enrique Arriaga Celis.ResourcesFrom Our Guest* Angela's bio on Lideramos* Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya* Gloria Evangelina AnzaldúaTarot Cards Discussed* The Tower* The Lovers* Next World Tarot, by Cristy C. I lift up the black mirror to my face. As I look into the mirror, I see the reflection of my face in the mirror. The NYPD and Parks Police violently shut down a community gathering on April 9 in Sunset Park organized by Mexicanos Unidos. The organization has previously held an unpermitted open-air market on Sundays at the park. The market, known as Plaza Tonatiuh, was shut down on Sunday, April 2 for not having the proper vending license. The group returned last Sunday to celebrate the Easter holiday and with no intention to engage in vending. It didn't matter to the police. The Indypendent's Amba Guerguerian was on hand and recorded this footage when moved to shut down the event. Amba spoke with Paz, a representative of Mexicanos Unidos who talked about the group's activities and explained in greater detail what happened on Sunday.
