The Mascot Theory has been kicking around Wisconsin weekend-warrior style for the past decade, but like many musicians, the great pandemic-induced entertainment halt of 2020 forced the band to reflect and refocus musical efforts. With the core foundation of singer/songwriter Erik Kjelland and the rhythm section of Nick Fry on bass guitar and Paul Metz on drums, The Mascot Theory used this time off to slightly shift their sound away from their acoustic-driven folk-rock music and into a more classic rock inspired Rock and Roll groove, especially thanks to the addition of lead guitarist Cory who brings a strong musical swagger and reverence to the guitar gods of the past. In April 2022, the band worked with famed producer Terry Manning (Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Shakira, Lenny Kravitz, Stax Record) at Sonic Ranch Studios near El Paso, TX and recorded 13 new songs as well as 2 updated versions of classic live show staple songs to record songs for the upcoming "Every Sign Of Life" album. Along with a WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) win for Best Male Vocalist (Erik Kjelland) and a nomination for Best Americana/folk artist, The Mascot Theory has won over 20 MAMA (Madison Area Music Association) awards including back-to-back 2016 and 2017 Artist of the Year awards.  They have played major festivals throughout Wisconsin including Summerfest, Freak Fest, and Mile of Music Festival, and have shared the stage with BoDeans, America, Don McLean, The Jayhawks, Vance Joy, Frank Turner, Chase Rice, Kaleo, The Wild Feathers, Guster, Blitzen Trapper, Cory Chisel, Andy Frasco and the UN, Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, American Aquarium, American Scarecrows, and Lillie Mae. The new music travels into its classic rock influences; harmonies that bring to mind the Eagles or Poco, a bit of that Rolling Stones guitar swagger, a little ZZ Top blues rock, a dash of the Pink Floyd mood, but never straying far from the core of the Tom Petty/Beatle-esque importance of solid melody and lyrics. Songs like "When I Drift Away", "Lavender Blues" and "Fast Car Getaway" showcase the new album's infectious energy and beautiful harmonies within an eclectic landscape of well-crafted and memorable songs.

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Amplifying Wisconsin Music Episode 092   Joey's Song raises the funds needed to support cutting-edge research and vital patient services in support of pediatric epilepsy and children with special needs.   HOW JOEY'S SONG RAISES FUNDS Because of Joey's love for music, our foundation uses music as our primary fundraising vehicle. Each year, we host a benefit concert that features multi-platinum recording artist and 3-time Grammy winner Butch Vig and his band, The Know-It-All Boyfriends (aka KIAB), who serve as a house band to a steady stream of musical stars. Our Joey's Song family of artists include: Brian Aubert (Silversun Pickups); Charlie Berens (The Manitowoc Minute); Peter Buck and Mike Mills (R.E.M.); Neko Case; Rosanne Cash; Miguel Cervantes (Hamilton); Cory Chisel; Chris Collingwood (Fountains Of Wayne); Ralph Covert (The Bad Examples); Cowboy Junkies; Crash Test Dummies; Marshall Crenshaw; Justin Currie (Del Amitri); Tanya Donelly and Gail Greenwood (Belly); Butch Vig and Duke Erikson (Garbage); Steve Forbert; Robbie Fulks; Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!); Jon Dee Graham (True Believers); Kay Hanley (Letters To Cleo); Joel Hodgson (Mystery Science Theater 3000); Kelly Hogan; Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow); Jewel; Freedy Johnston; Sam Llanas (BoDeans); Gary Louris and Mark Olson (The Jayhawks); Jesse Malin; Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers); Scott McCaughey (Minus 5); Michael Mcdermott; Rhett Miller (Old 97s); Montgomery Gentry; Dan Navarro (Lowen & Navarro); Miles Nielsen; Rick Nielsen and Daxx Nielsen (Cheap Trick); Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket); Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum); Linda Pitmon (Zuzu's Petals); Brian Ray (Paul Mccartney); Matthew Ryan; Trapper Schoepp; Jody Stephens (Big Star); Ken Stringfellow (The Posies); Aaron Tippin; Zach Williams (The Lone Bellow); and Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate). Since Joey's death in 2010, we have produced 5 charity compilation CDs featuring rare and previously unreleased music from nationally known, award-winning musicians.   Our CDs are all available as digital downloads. Radio stations from Australia to the UK to South America to Japan to Sweden and everywhere in between have played our songs. CDs have been downloaded in over 25 countries worldwide.   Joey's Song was started in 2010 following the death of four-year-old Joey Gomoll, who passed one week shy of his fifth birthday. Joey suffered from a rare and debilitating form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome. Dravet's caused persistent seizures which were never able to be controlled through medications leading to severe learning disabilities. While Dravet's robbed Joey of the ability to speak, Joey remained a happy and fun-loving child. He was happiest when music was playing, allowing him to hum, drum, and sing in his own way. To be present when music was playing meant only one thing, that Joey would soon have you dancing and enjoying the music with him.

It's been almost 50 years since we put a man on the moon, and it's almost time for our 50th episode on Home Brew Rock Stars ... hmmm, I wonder what that will be about?! To celebrate, we thought an episode with some of our favorite moments from the first 48 episodes seemed appropriate. There have been so many that we'll probably do another favorite moments again, but the clips in episode 49 were a lot of fun. To start, we share a clip from one of our first "Real or Fake" segments with guest Eric Johnson. Then we explore the meaning of "Grundrel" with Zak Rotello and some tunes from Miles Nielsen and the rusted Hearts. Then we revisit our "holiday hangover' episode with some silly stories, followed by a couple of memorable segments with resident home brew/mead maker/tie-dye artist, Mike Bohn. About the halfway point we replay a hilarious Real or Fake band names segment with guests Brian Mastrangeli and Cory Wicklund from TUNDRAS ... which was no doubt one of the funnest shows we ever recoroded! And speaking of rock stars, the next clip reviews some a deep psychoblab moments with our on site interview with Carson Suoza, now former head brewer at Pig Minds Brewing ... you'll crack up, for sure. We wrap with a short clip at Kent's during a brewers guild that explored some New Zealand hops, then some clips from our palate fatigue chat with guest Jim Goecks head brewer and found of Off Kilter Brewing. And we wrap this favorite moments with some clips from our tribute to Mr. Charlie Papazian, the grandfather of home brewing.

A bottle rocket for your thoughts?! For our 48th episode as we approach another 4th of July, the crew discusses why 'Merica likes their freedom, and their beer. We dip our toes into some facts about the 4th of July, how our forefathers started our celebration of independence (of who many were home brewers themselves), feature and taste a few beers for Independence Day and continue our 'Merica theme with some new music and do a fun quiz game called Patriot Beer God (how red, white and blue is you're beer intellect?). Did you know congress didn't actually vote for independence on July 4, and the Fourth of July didn't become an official holiday until over a century after America declared its independence? Listen . close and you'll find out a lot of fun facts about how and why we celebrate our freedom. Plus, we'll do a few beer tastings like Yankee USA IPA from Wisconsin Brewing Co, Revolution's Freedom of Speach, Buckledown's Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts Lager and Liberty IPA from Anchor Brewing (which we also share a clone recipe for all you patriotic home brewers). Speaking of Miles Nielsen and the Rusted Hearts, we listen to samples from their latest effort called "In the Meantime", a sassy 'mericana digital 4-song EP, with song titles of Start it Up, Gangrene, Revolution Day and High Street, and just $4.00 to own it. A full length album called OhBAHOY will be out after in the Fall 2019. Make sure to revisit later in July for our 50th episode, sure to take you back in time to the beer world of 1969. #drinkitup

Working Class Audio #156 with Justin Perkins!!! Justin Perkins has been recording music since his mid-teens. It all started  in his father’s basement then progressed to recording studios around the state of Wisconsin including the renowned Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin before relocating to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he now has his own mastering studio called Mystery Room Mastering. Justin's  clients include Tommy Stinson, The Replacements, The Figgs, The Gaslight Anthem, Daryl Stuermer, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience, The Smoking Popes, Limbeck, Miles Nielsen, and Tenement. Justin also recently mixed a new documentary about the legendary 90’s band Jawbreaker called “Don’t Break Down”. Outside of the studioJustin has  played bass in some of his own bands as well as with the newly reformed Bash & Pop, Tommy Stinson, Paul Collins Beat, Cory Chisel and a few others. About this Interview: Every time I post  about a new WCA show on Twitter there was always one guy who liked it, shared it or commented on it and that was Justin. Naturally I wanted to know who Justin Perkins was and why he was always liking the show so one day I visited his website Mystery Room Mastering and it was then I fully understood just how bad ass this guy was plus I was just blown away at the thorough nature of his website. Justin had reached out before to invite me to a Bash and Pop show  he was playing in San Francisco (I was unable to go) so I wasn't completely unaware of of his background but I had to talk to him! So after reaching out, scheduling and conducting my interview I had a whole new appreciation for Justin. We chat about his journey and his website and the usual WCA topics (clients, business, work/life balance, etc...).  -Enjoy! Matt

What's Goin' Down In Downtown J-Town is proud to bring you an inside view of the great people rebuilding this town. There have been so many great musicians, artists, and businesses calling Joliet their home as of late. We have made it our duty to continually keep you informed about what you can get out to enjoy. Our podcast is recorded at Third City Sound on the third floor above Chicago Street Pub, the hub for our community. I've meet some of the best friends here, and I look forward to all of the new friends that have yet to find us. In episode 27, we introduce to you Ernie Hendrickson. He's played at The Pub a bunch, and has also played Hopstring fest. This gentleman has been playing all over the place for years with the likes of Chicago Farmer and Miles Nielsen. I caught his last set at Chicago Street Pub after recording episode 25 with the Joliet Brewer's Guild. He agreed that night to make some time to get on the podcast for his own episode. He absolutely killed his performance in the studio. His laid back style is a real treat to listen to. Enjoy...
