In this episode of The New CISO, Steve is joined by Aaron Bailey, CISO and co-founder of The Missing Link, to discuss what it takes to start your own security business. Getting his first computer at eleven years old, Steve has always loved working with technology. Through explaining his professional journey, Steve shares the benefits and difficulties of being a cyber security founder. Listen to the episode to learn more about Aaron's first jobs, joining an established startup, and success after being a corporate CISO. Listen to Steve and Aaron discuss being your own boss and the challenges of being a co-founder: Meet Aaron (1:32) Host Steve Moore introduces our guest today, Aaron Bailey. Always a tinkerer with technology, Aaron explains how he started in cyber security, working his way up from entry-level positions. After high school, Aaron struggled to find a job. After memorizing a manual per his father's advice with a proposition of being quizzed, Aaron finally got hired at a computer shop, launching his career. Why This Job (9:23) Steve asks Aaron what the pay was like at his first job. Through hard work, Aaron's salary doubled within a year, and he was paid far more than other people his age. Aaron's Advice (11:52) Although Aaron does not believe you need to be a staunch techie like himself for every job, what he looks for in an interviewee is passion, intelligence, perseverance, and dedication to the field. Essential Aid (19:42) Steve presses Aaron on the guide Essential Aid and how to explain it to others. Aaron defines it as containing the top mitigation strategies for cyber intrusions. To use it properly, you have to embrace automation. Becoming a Founder (25:53) When Aaron's colleague Sam resigned from their corporate job, Aaron learned he was starting his own business and wanted Aaron to come with him. Sam prompted Aaron to meet with the other partners, beginning the next stage of his CISO career. Aaron then shares the early weeks of joining the Missing Link and the challenges along the way. A Non-Startup Startup (33:05) The Missing Link was already a successful startup before Aaron joined, but they did not have a cyber security department. Aaron and Sam then became the company's security professionals, which came with tremendous planning and organizing. The Entrepreneur CISO (38:48) Host Steve presses Aaron on his advice for other CISOs wanting to start their own businesses. Aaron shares what was difficult about being a corporate CISO where you're not always listened to compared to his position at the Missing Link. As a founder, you have increased responsibilities, but it's much easier to ask for what you need for your team. More Advice (44:03) Aaron is still learning the shareholding and equity aspects of being a founder. Success once does not always mean success every time, so Aaron's main advice is to always ask for advice. Starting your own cyber security department is the most incredible interview of your career, but this path is not always easy. A New CISO Founder (50:59) To Aaron, being a CISO and a boss means having a seat on the board. Training new CISOs and watching them leave to start their own companies gives him the most joy. Ultimately, the new CISO strives for the top and is not afraid to bring others up in this increasingly necessary field. Links mentioned: https://www.themissinglink.com.au/ (The Missing Link)
Episode 19: In this episode, Molley and Chad speak with their friends, Brad and Kendrick, about being new boat owners. Brad and Kendrick were around the lakes, growing up, but now have a boat of their own. Brad explains that for the past 4 years, they've been lucky enough to have inherited their parents' boat. “It's been an experience from day one!” They have a funny way of explaining how they've decided to handle the specific jobs when it comes to launching and trailering the boat. Brad discusses how stressful it was launching the boat for the first time. Kendrick called it “the excitement.” Molley asks about the moment they finally felt comfortable with the boat. At the beginning of their second summer, their parents gave them their Sea Ray, which was a big upgrade from the boat they'd been using for the previous summer. New Boat Owner Miscommunications Brad recalls the problems they had the first time they were trailering the boat. They didn't have their communication and signals down, so it was pretty chaotic. The boat ramp is always a nerve-racking situation. Brad strongly advises that managing the boat ramp takes 2 important things: Communication and Patience. The four of them joke about the added pressure when you're new to boating, or especially at the beginning of the summer, and you're trying to get the boat launch while the kids are pressing buttons and switches, without you realizing it. What Is a Perfect Day on the Water? Brad describes his perfect day on the water. He really liked it when all he had to do is show up and ride as a guest. He likes driving his own boat, but it's a lot of responsibility. What Lakes Have They Visited? Kendrick grew up on Nolin. As boaters, they've visited Green River and Lake Cumberland. Brad adds Dale Hollow to the list. They really got their start on Green River. Brad jokes about taking their 18' craft across the main channel at Cumberland and how choppy it could get because of the larger boats. Kendrick kept her cool during one particular challenging ride. Molley actually has a picture from that day. Advice for Young Couples Considering the Lake Life? For someone totally new to the water. Brad recommends spending the summer with someone who has a boat. The idea is to give you a reality check on all of the things that go with owning a boat. He also discusses the importance of having a group you can talk with and get advice from as you're getting used to owning a boat. You might get stranded and need someone to help you out. Kendrick explains that if you didn't grow up around the lake and boating, it's a whole new world. You need a good support group. Brad discusses the importance of understanding the size of the boat as it relates to the specific lake you plan to visit most often. Are you going to take guest? What water sports do you want to do? All of these factors are important to your decision about which boat to buy. What's That One Bonehead Mistake You Could Have Avoided? Brad's been around boating since he was young. His parents took him on the water as early as they could. He loves the memories he created on Lake Cumberland. But then there will always be mistakes. Just a couple of weeks ago, Brad figured out that he forgot the plug. He's scratching his head, because he's still making mistakes, as a somewhat experienced boater. This was the first outing of the summer. There were so many things going on that day, including a curious 2-year-old daughter who likes to try out the new switches. They laugh about it now, but wow, what a day. Chad discusses the time he lost the keys to the boat shed. He was in a bit of a hurry and left them on the back of the truck. Two weeks later, he did it again! Molley explains how they've decided to switch to combination locks. More Advice to New Boaters Brad comments how many things simply come down to respect. Respect the environment. Respect other boaters. That includes appreciating the environment. Clean up your trash. Interestingly, he also asks people to not be focused on calling attention to yourself. Chad loves when he and Molley just find a quite cove. Molley can read her book and Chad takes the opportunity to do a little fishing. Brad adds that it really took them 4 years until he and Kendrick go the chance to take the boat out by themselves. It turned out to be one of his favorite times on the boat. Molley explains how much she values those quite experiences. Having people down to the lake is always fun, but entertaining is still work. As busy as life gets, it's important to make time to get back out on the lake. The experiences, face time, time with your kids (and their friends) and so many other positives happen at the lake. Take advantage of it. If You Won the Lottery Tomorrow, What Boat Would They Buy? Brad would get a 32' center console Sunsation. It'd be big enough for their group of friends. It would handle the traffic on Cumberland and it's still small enough to be towable. Although, he also likes Howard Boats. Kendrick has a different idea. She wants more room for friends. She'd like an open-bow runabout, at no bigger than 30'. But, she really wants a swim deck. What Has Been Their Least Favorite Thing About Boating? For Kendrick, launching the boat is the most stressful part. Brad comments on the maintenance, especially winterizing and de-winterizing. Regardless however, boating has been such a great experience for them. We'd like to thank our friends Brad and Kendrick for joining us for this episode. Molley and Chad recorded this from their cabin at Trooper Island. Check out Episode 19 to learn more about that fantastic resource on Dale Hollow Lake. That's a wrap for this episode. We hope you found it helpful, insightful and maybe a little entertaining. Thanks for Listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider sharing it with your social media friends. We hope to see you out there soon. Until next time, here's to warm weather and calm waters! Don't forget to subscribe!

Isolation. The Kelly's know isolation all too well, but unlike Covid-Isolation, they know it in the most beautiful way! The Australian family of four live on an ultra-remote island called Uepi, located in the Solomon Islands. Not only is their unique lifestyle one that's of keen interest, they also have taught their children from only weeks of age how to enjoy and respect the ocean. Learn it all here! Jase & Katie run an ethical tourist resort (attracting mostly SCUBA divers) and a grass-roots based charity, centred around protecting the incredible natural environment and traditional islander way of life. Jase, with a background in international business, and Katie, a clinical pharmacist, are a pair well-equipped to manage their alternative lifestyle and give back to the local community. Arlo (3.5 yrs) and Ophelia (2 yrs) have been the perfect addition to their island life, encouraging them to explore the ocean through new eyes. Jase and Katie are both keen free divers and especially love exploring untouched islands and reefs around their home island with the kids in tow. How They've Taught Their Kids About the Ocean: They submerged their kids in the ocean by 10-weeks-old They don't create a sense of fear, but instead educate them They take the time to go in the water with their kids and talk through boundaries They respect the creatures, including the sharks They know which animals to be cautious of: stingers (jelly fish), tree snakes, centipedes (which are venomous) They get them to connect with creatures – give human-like qualities to the animals in the water, or get them to look at smaller portions of the animal (a particular shape or design) They start where they are comfortable, and allow them to choose what they want to do – they don't push them too far They play to their strengths and prepare them ahead of time They demonstrate their own confidence to their children More Advice on Getting Outside with Kids: Keep it close to home Don't underestimate how much the outdoors can turn a situation around On their island, they need to be self-reliant, as they don't have a hospital on the island, so they would need to fly a helicopter in (extraordinary expense)…they have medicines and equipment to handle most situations. Katie's Personal Water Rules While Pregnant: Spent more time in the water Stopped free-diving to depth No scuba diving (as advised by physician), because of the breath hold and not the same level of oxygen A day in their life usually looks like 3 meals together, getting in the water with the kids, having an adventure with the kids, and working in between – check out their YouTube channel to see more! Tips for Connection during Isolation: Utilize Facetime Reach out to friends and family Don't be afraid to talk about feelings! I've never managed to find a direct road to success. My bio reads like a random walk down many different career paths, so I always feel unqualified to answer when people ask me for career advice. Today, however, I'd like to share one insight about doing business in Japan that I learned the hard way. If you've been through something like this, I hope you'll be able to identify with it. If you haven't, I hope you can learn something from it, and avoid it. Please share your experiences in the comments. Show Notes More life lessons from Mark the Dog Japanese fluency is an odd target What's worse than any horror movie plot? Success via humiliating failure How good does your Japanese need to be to do business in Japan? Leave a comment Transcript Welcome to Disrupting Japan, straight talk from Japan's most successful entrepreneurs. I'm Tim Romero and thanks for joining me. Today I want to tell you the story about one of the most embarrassing and publicly humiliating events of my life, and something very important it taught me about doing business in Japan. Before we get to that, however, I received a lot of great feedback from the last episode on the Japanese trap of the Glorious Failure, including a number of Japanese listeners who said they really liked Taniguchi-bucho’s explanation of corporate Japan’s negative point system. (More) Advice from Mark the Dog But by far the most popular request was for pictures and more life lessons from Mark the Dog. Well, OK. I’m going to do that, but please understand that this is not a very deep well. There is only so much Mark the Dog can teach us about how we should live our lives, because after all, Mark the Dog, is … well, he’s a dog. So I’ll put a couple of pictures of Mark the Dog on the website, (Yes, he is very cute), and I’ll let you know that there is, in fact, one more thing that Mark the Dog has taught me during the ongoing lockdown. Mark being a good boy. This was my wife's idea. Meet my PA, Mark. You know how dogs get really excited every time they hear a little noise outside or see something move past the window? Or how they become nearly hysterical whenever someone rings the doorbell or comes to the door? Well, I get that now. I totally understand where dogs are coming from on this. The other week two pigeons landed on my window sill, and I got way more excited about that than I probably should have. So hey to all the world’s dogs; we're cool on the doorbell thing. No judgment here. OK, back our main story about my path to success via public humiliation. Japanese fluency is an odd target One of the things people always say when they find out I’ve been living in Japan for almost 30 years is “Wow. How good is your Japanese? You must be fluent!” I never really know how to answer that. I’m definitely not fluent. I mean, I’m not trying to be overly humble here, my Japanese is good. I manage staff in Japanese. I do sales in Japanese. I do presentations in Japanese. So it’s good. But fluent? No. Often when I try to explain a complex or abstract thought, I manage to get lost before I find my way to the verb. I can’t get into a heated argument in Japanese. And I usually don’t understand most of the jokes. My wife loves rakugo, which is a popular Japanese form of comedy storytelling. They are these long shaggy-dog stories that people find hysterical, and I can understand 100% of the story, but I can’t for the life of me see how any of it is funny. And then of course, there is keigo. The mind-boggling complex protocol of honorific and humble forms whose use depends on a complex three-dimensional matrix of formality, in-group out-group status, and the role you are playing in that particular interaction. Frankly, once I get past basic greetings and a few set phrases, I tend to screw it up pretty badly. But, as I mentioned, keigo is hard,
