With guests Dr. Oriol Caudevilla and Skip SchiphorstThe Green Belt and Road Initiative. Much has been said about the BRI, known in China as the One Belt One Road – and sometimes labelled the New Silk Road. A global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to invest in more than 150 countries and international organizations, the scheme is composed of six urban development land corridors linked by road, rail, energy, and digital infrastructure, and the Maritime Silk Road linked by the development of ports. The idea was simple enough, transport raw materials to China while carrying its manufactured wares to participating nations.Dr. Oriol Caudevilla is a highly regarded voice on all things fintech. He fleshes out what he means by the “Green BRI” because on the surface, the concept seems almost seems counter intuitive as vast amounts of carbon/energy are expended to carry resources towards China and goods from it. As he points out, there are there green efficiencies and other benefits to be had from the BRI that will meaningfully impact the planet's climate.Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) and Non-English Language Online Research. Skip Schiphorst is course coordinator and an instructor for the Swiss-based firm I-Intelligence's Arabic, Russian and Chinese open-source intelligence courses. He shares the importance of being able to search for OSINT in languages other than English and how it has a direct application to lawyers, compliance officers and investigators in regional hubs like Hong Kong and Singapore – and the banking and financial institutions and multinational corporations they serve. As he emphasizes, it is often easier to navigate the internet in Chinese than English due to simplicity in structure of the former language.Skip describes what it was like to grow up in Switzerland as a young man of Dutch ancestry, his decision to join the Marines in 1997 and how his views on the world and the degree to which outside powers can use military force to change cultures and nations changed over the course of his service. He believes this to be the Asian century as many Western nations pursue more nativist and isolationist policies. He also talks about the value of OSINT and multi-lingual research for due diligence in a mergers and acquisitions context, as well as for know-your-customer searches in anti-money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions compliance for banks. The Regulatory Ramblings podcast is brought to you by The University of Hong Kong's Reg/Tech Lab (Building Better Financial Systems), HKU-SCF FinTech Academy, Asia Global Institute, and HKU-edX Professional Certificate in FinTech, with support from HKU Law. From cybercrime to fraud, the industry of organized crime is big business. Globally, it's measured in the trillions of dollars. In this episode of Privacy Files, we talk to a former FBI agent who spent his entire career working to put organized criminals behind bars. Inspired by his father's 38-year career with the NYPD, Ken Strange helped the American government combat terrorism, the cartels and global fraud. He summed up his heroic adventures in the book A Cop's Son: One G-Man's Fight Against Jihad, Global Fraud and the Cartels. Ken's career has taken him to more than 65 countries, resulting in countless lessons about life, culture and staying safe while surrounded by danger. As fascinating as his travels overseas were, his life back home in the United States wasn't too boring either, leading to encounters with Jodie Foster, Martin Sheen and Ray Bradbury. We cover many topics including online romance scams and the risks of sharing too much personal data online. Having employed many Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) techniques himself over the course of his law enforcement career, Ken is all too familiar with the growing problem of digital exhaust. While Ken says the federal government did an excellent job protecting his privacy and personal safety during his career, he admits most people are not so lucky and must take data and identity protection very seriously. This interview will give you a greater appreciation for the difficult job of fighting the increasingly sophisticated modern criminal. In this episode of the Security Swarm Podcast, host Andy is joined by Romain Basset, the Director of Technology Strategy at Hornetsecurity. They're exploring the topic of Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) - what it is, how threat actors use it to launch effective attacks, and the dangers it poses.   Throughout the episode, they discuss the ease with which OSINT can gather information using AI and other tools and provide examples of how it can be used in phishing, business email compromise, and even deep fake attacks. The conversation also touches on the importance of privacy awareness and security awareness training to mitigate these threats.  Key Takeaways:  OSINT refers to publicly available information that threat actors can easily gather to launch targeted attacks. This includes social media profiles, online forums, data breach databases, and more.    Threat actors are using OSINT to not only target individuals, but also find vulnerabilities in organizations' web-facing software and infrastructure.    Combating OSINT-powered attacks requires a multi-pronged approach of improving privacy awareness and implementing robust security awareness training programs.  Timestamps:  (02:24) - Definition of OSINT  (07:17) - How AI makes OSINT-powered attacks easier  (15:22) - Using OSINT to target organizations  (25:35) - Mitigating OSINT-powered attacks  Episode Resources: Train your users with a personalised Security Awareness Service Business Email Compromise: The $43 Billion Scam

Most people are generally familiar with the work that private investigators do. But there is a specialization within this profession that few are aware of. In this episode of Privacy Files we talk to Olivia Arnauts, a licensed private investigator in the state of Texas. Olivia specializes in an area called Protective Intelligence, a subset of Executive Protection. In her role, Olivia typically serves high-profile clients where, among many jobs, she performs threat assessments to determine risk exposure to dangers such as identity theft and financial fraud. In short, a Protective Intelligence Agent is proactive in identifying, assessing and mitigating potential threats to a client. We talk about Olivia's early career as a Signals Intelligence Analyst in the Army and how that influenced her decision to transition into Protective Intelligence. Olivia talks about her typical client profile, from celebrities to high-profile business people to politicians. As we discussed in previous episodes of Privacy Files, people share so much personal information online that most bad actors can simply rely on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) to conduct their nefarious work. Olivia explains how easy it is for her to find personal information, ranging from the embarrassing to data that could destroy someone's future if it fell into the wrong hands. We then cover some simple things you can do, whether you're a high-profile person or not, to reduce your digital footprint. We close out the episode by talking about Olivia's project to help human trafficking survivors. OUR SPONSORS: Anonyome Labs - Makers of MySudo and Sudo Platform. Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) has been receiving a lot of press lately. There is so much data freely accessible online today that many experts say spy agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA) should focus their research efforts on OSINT sources first, long before employing covert techniques like wiretapping or reading an adversary's mail. In other words, OSINT isn't just about stalkers and other bad actors using publicly-available information on you to do you harm. Today, OSINT is used by corporations and governments to track people and even predict the future. In this episode of Privacy Files, Brian Tillman (aka Mr. Metaverse) fills in for Sarah as co-host to help Rich make sense of the rapid rise of OSINT. Given the voluminous amounts of information the public is routinely sharing, how can corporations and governments leverage that data to make critical decisions? Rich kicks off the episode by briefly defining what OSINT really means and how your day-to-day online activities are leaving a data trail that feeds the OSINT machine. From predicting crime in America's largest cities to analyzing consumer app data to locate secret American military bases around the world, the power that OSINT harbors for society's future is just now being discovered. While OSINT has been around for decades, it really took off with the advent of the internet. And now with machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) making giant leaps in recent years, the ability to make sense of unimaginable amounts of data in minutes instead of days, weeks or months is altering the way militaries, governments and corporations solve problems. Just some examples of vectors where your personal data may be acquired include: facial recognition cameras, license plate readers, social media usage, cell phone location data sharing, and anytime you provide someone your email or phone number. Feedback & Anregungen an feedback@osint.studio © 2023 Samuel Lolagar & Matthias Wilson

Straight from the floor of GSX 2022, Don Sortor, Senior Vice President of Global Integrity, Inc, joins host Chuck Randolph to discuss the evolution of open source intelligence. There was a time in the security profession when practitioners were fed intelligence informing them about how to approach (or avoid) a threat. Fast forward a few decades and it's now evolved into an influx of information where it's hard to identify what is needed and how to get ahead. More importantly, the ability to manage information to maintain privacy has become one of the most challenging aspects of security. Don and Chuck discuss the rapid changes in managing Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and share the unfortunate implications of turning a blind eye to such an important issue. The shift from actively finding information to preventing information from being discovered has changed the way we conduct business in our day-to-day lives. They discuss how to balance connecting with others online and protecting yourself, your family, and your business. They conclude with Don's insight on Global Integrity's latest product and how it's revolutionizing the privacy industry and how we communicate. Don has 30+ years in the security field. But this is not always the case — they may fall victim to scams, phishing, or hacking. So, how can you educate yourself and your children on these matters? Cybersecurity educator Brandon Laur recommends acquiring knowledge of password and account management to mitigate the risk of being hacked. Managing each account and password can be difficult, so it's important to leverage regulation tools such as Google Password Manager, iCloud, or LastPass so you can stay organized.
