Global market turmoil opens a window for credit investors in companies with too much debt, according to London-based Aptior Capital, which specializes in distressed debt and rescue finance. “All this volatility, it throws up even more opportunities,” founder Rudi Singh tells Bloomberg News’ Giulia Morpurgo and Bloomberg Intelligence’s Tolu Alamutu in the latest Credit Edge podcast. “These are very good businesses and it really has been the old adage of good company, bad cap structure.” Morpurgo and Alamutu also discuss the firm’s target of 20% returns, a shift to Europe by US investors, liability management, real estate and auto sector stress. Silvia Blezza Picherle - 18 dicembre 2024
How big does an urban garden need to be to support pollinators and other important insects? What kinds of plants lead to the most biodiverse space? How should homeowners manage their gardens to support the natural world?Get the full garden scoop with PhD researcher Joeri Morpurgo, from University Leiden in the Netherlands! Morpurgo and his colleagues visited urban gardens throughout Amsterdam and counted all the different plant and insect species they could find. Some key findings? Gardens can be small but mighty--as long as there's dense foliage and a plethora of plant species, they supported a variety of insect species. And one controversial finding: native vs. non-native plant species didn't seem to make a difference to insect diversity. Hear Morpurgo's take on his findings, and his urban garden management recommendations on the podcast!Related links: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1618866724003297https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/news/2024/07/pavement-gardens-are-crucial-to-urban-biodiversity
This episode is an exploration of Michael Morpurgo's novel "Private Peaceful" and the true stories that inspired it. During the First World War, 306 British soldiers were executed for "cowardice" (lâchté) - some as young as 16. This episode uncovers how Morpurgo transformed this dark chapter of history into an unforgettable story of two brothers. Perfect for intermediate English learners, we'll explain key vocabulary, historical context, and the journey to justice that finally came in 2006 when these soldiers were pardoned. Michael Morpurgo is a literary treasure. The author of War Horse and Private Peaceful, he's written around 150 books, loved particularly among children and young people. He's returned with yet another novel, Cobweb following a little dog heading to London in the aftermath of Britain's triumph at Waterloo. Morpurgo told Jack Tame that much like many of his stories, Cobweb was inspired by a friend of his who walked 250 miles from the West Coast of Wales to London on a drovers' road. Drovers' roads are the paths farmers would use to bring their livestock from their farms to the market, as back before vehicles and public transport became common, walking was the only way to reach the big cities. While researching drovers' roads, Morpurgo realised that their stories, and the stories of drovers' dogs in particular, aren't well known. “And I thought, that's a story that mostly no one knows, so why don't you tell it? Tell that tale? So that's what I did.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[CN: war, death, bombs, destruction, trench warfare] This week we're reading books about war, and about building peace. Our chapter book is Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo, beloved by Matt and Nina since they were 11, and the General by Janet Charters, which we'd never read before, and is a fascinating look at 1960s pacifism and at Michael Foreman's earliest published illustrations. There's a lot of further reading for those of you that want it this week. Our resident history nerd Matt recommends these interviews with Mr Morpurgo (our content note extends to these, and also they contain spoilers): http://www.filmeducation.org/privatepeaceful/pdf/MICHAEL%20MORPURGO%20Interview%20Transcript.pdf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S3fp8Tqn5E&ab_channel=HarperCollinsChildren%27sBooks And Nina, who took the lead on the research into The General and Michael Foreman (we couldn't find much at all about Janet Charters, sadly), recommends these: https://writewyattuk.com/2016/10/20/drawing-from-experience-the-michael-foreman-interview/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLF-ENtMp5o&ab_channel=Culture24videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePRDc_Gozjk&ab_channel=Culture24videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8axwRLbi58&ab_channel=Culture24videos What A Wonderful Day is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License by Shane Ivers of silvermansound.com

Over Christmas, he narrated a new BBC TV film adaptation of his 2014 children’s story ‘Mimi And The Mountain Dragon’. Turned into a National Theatre play, then a Hollywood movie – it’s made him a household name.
Today I'm speaking with Brandi Morpurgo, owner of Daisy Chain Book Co. in Alberta, Canada. I heard the story of Brandi's book store on wheels on the podcast Don't Keep Your Day Job and now am delighted to be sharing it with you on Keeping Shop. Brandi shares her startup story; both how difficult it was to be the first of her kind and also how her natural drive and resilience forged a path to a successful opening. We talk about the myth of social media, building community wherever you go and providing a truly impactful customer experience. Brandi also shares her thoughts on writing a business plan that goes beyond just the nitty-gritty and encourages us all to think bigger for our businesses. I love this. By acknowledging that we're even thinking of a 5-year plan we're imprinting big growth and big success on our business from the very beginning. If our big dreams change that's okay (!!!), at least we're allowing ourselves to be confident in the power of our businesses even when they're young. Brandi shares some of her favorite books and you'll hear me nerd out on why fiction is my ultimate brain escape. This is a wonderful episode. Brandi is warm, engaging and offers nuggets of wisdom that we can start using immediately. Enjoy the show.
