And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from— although the servers who had drawn the water knew —,the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,“Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;but you have kept the good wine until now.”Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galileeand so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

But while Republicans have been attacking Newsom, the governor has vetoed a number of bills that had a lot of support from the left side of the aisle. The incarnation of Jesus Christ the Lord is the reason for celebration at all times and what ought to be the reason for Christmas. The incarnation itself cries "made Himself of no reputation". God has chosen the weak, base, and things despised to bring to nought things that are. In this series, "Come to Bethlehem and See", and the sermon, "Mary Espoused to Joseph" come and see this constant theme. Josh Strelecki, Pastor-Teacher highlights the insignificance of Mary and Joseph, Nazareth and Bethlehem, Christ's Genealogy and Birth, but also that these things are fantastic because of the significance of Christ the Lord!

Matthew 1 + Luke 1: Jan 2 - 8 The lineage of Jesus Christ Matthew starts off by telling us Joseph's lineage. It includes 4 women. This is very rare. Thamar: Tamar from Genesis 38. Tamar had to take matters into her own hands when a group of men were not doing as they knew they should be doing. I talk about her more in Episode 60 Rachab - or Rahab from Joshua 6 She helps conceal the Israelite spies that Joshua sent into Jericho and her and her entire family are later saved during the destruction of Jericho because of her bravery and kindness. Ruth - Book of Ruth Ruth took an unusual path and arranged her own marriage. She relied on the Lord in her story. Wife of Urias - who is Bathsheba. 2 Samuel 11. Bathsheba has an interesting story. One that is unfortunate. However, she was faithful in raising her son Solomon. These women have incredible stories. They are all messy stories. None of them are perfect and all have been through a LOT. A lot happened to preserve the lineage of Jesus Christ - and faithful women were a huge part of that line. These women are so relatable. They have been lied to. They struggle financially. They are marginalized. They are forgotten or they are outsiders. These women are us! These are the very women that Jesus was born to save. He came for them. He came for me. He came for you! Mary + Elisabeth Elisabeth: Luke 1 Right away we learn what type of people Zacharias + Elisabeth are. Luke 1: 6 Righteous Walking in the commandments + ordinances We learn that Zacharias is at the altar - which is actually a once in a lifetime opportunity. He had been praying, when an angel (Gabriel) comes and tells him that his prayer is heard and Elisabeth will have a son, and his name should be John. He is told about John and how he shall tell the people of Jesus Christ and testify of him. However, Zacharias asks “Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.” Then he is struck dumb. - unable to speak until the baby is born. For 9 months he cannot speak. In verse 20 we learn he is struck dumb b/c he doesn't believe the words of the angel. Then Elisabeth does conceive, and hides her pregnancy because she is so old and has been barren. Mary: Luke 1 The same angel that visited Zacharias also gets to visit Mary. We find out quickly what type of woman Mary is: Luke 1: 27-28 Virgin Highly Favored Blessed Believing Willing to do what is asked of her. In the book. Walking with the Women of the New Testament on page 32 it is explained that Espoused means more than engaged. It is a 2 step process. In the first step, there would have been a contract of sorts where Joseph would have signed it with witnesses present. Joseph also would have had to make some sort of gift/payment that could have been valuable jewelry of some sort. Possibly a ring. They were considered married, but did not share a home or anything like that. In order to get out of this situation, a formal divorcement would have had to be made. Formal marriage was the second step. As the angel tells Mary that she shall conceive and bring for Jesus she doesn't question who Jesus is. She is a faithful daughter of God who had most likely been taught the words from the Old Testament. She probably knew that Jesus would be born and what He was prophesied to do. She questions how that is possible b/c she has not been intimate with a man. The angels explain that the Holy Ghost will overshadow her. She's then told that her cousin - JST relative - Elisabeth is pregnant also. That she's 6 months pregnant even. Luke 1:37 - 38 “Be it unto me.” I love these words from Mary. She is willing to do this thing that she probably doesn't fully understand. Being a faithful woman, I'm sure she knows what has been prophesied of the Lord. She was willing though. She believed it!

To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another, the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another, faith by the same Spirit; to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another, mighty deeds; to another, prophecy; to another, discernment of spirits; to another, varieties of tongues; to another, interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.Gospel Jn 2:1-11 There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from — although the servers who had drawn the water knew —, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

In this Episode of The GRID, host Chris Kuhlmann examines Critical Race Theory (CRT), its history and origins. SHOW NOTES In this Episode of The GRID, host Chris Kuhlmann examines Critical Race Theory (CRT), its history and origins. CRT can trace its origins as it is known now, to key people making their contributions back in the 60s and 70s, then back to the 1800s and the grandparent, Critical Theory, championed in by Marx and Engels. This theory was aimed at the demolition of Western traditions and norms and sought to label workers as the oppressed and the owners as the oppressors – the origins of Marxism and socialism. Today, what first began as an academic study, then crept into the courtroom, then into the political discussion. Espoused by universities, now it's being touted, even demanded, in some cases, in corporate America. How many of you work for organizations who have made diversity, equity and inclusion, or unconscious bias training, as a condition of employment? One of the frustrating elements, is that it appears that Critical Race Theory seems to rely on social constructs. In other words we are going to actually heightened race to the discussion, and elevate storytelling and examples of where oppression MAY have occurred, over evidence and reason. Critical Race Theory's key assertion is that racism is not the result of individual conscious racist actions or thoughts. Racism is systematic and structural. It is embedded in America's legal system, institutions and free enterprise system, and imposes whiteness as a social norm. Father Hudgins' homily: Espoused to the Divine
Reading 1 Is 62:1-5 For Zion’s sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawnand her victory like a burning torch. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory;you shall be called by a new namepronounced by the mouth of the LORD.You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD,a royal diadem held by your God.No more shall people call you “Forsaken,”or your land “Desolate,”but you shall be called “My Delight,”and your land “Espoused.”For the LORD delights in youand makes your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you;and as a bridegroom rejoices in his brideso shall your God rejoice in you.Reading 2 Acts 13:16-17, 22-25 When Paul reached Antioch in Pisidia and entered the synagogue,he stood up, motioned with his hand, and said,“Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestorsand exalted the people during their sojourn in theland of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it.Then he removed Saul and raised up David as king;of him he testified,‘I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;he will carry out my every wish.’From this man’s descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentanceto all the people of Israel;and as John was completing his course, he would say,‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not he.Behold, one is coming after me;I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.’”Gospel Mt 1:1-25 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse, Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah. Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph. Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah. Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah. Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile. After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud, Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Christ, fourteen generations. Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

Memorial of St. Maria Goretti, Virgin and MartyrToday we remember and celebrate St. Maria Goretti, a young girl who was killed because she refused to sin. A young man had asked her for sexual favors and when she repeatedly said no, he became more forceful. He finally got fed up and stabbed her 14 times. On her deathbed, Maria forgave the young man. When she struggled and refused the give in to the young man, Maria Goretti exclaimed, “No! It is a sin! God does not want it!” May all of our thoughts, desires, and actions be determined by God's love and fidelity towards us so that all that we think, say, and do be a reflection of His love and fidelity.Click here for today's readings.

Melody: Au fort de ma detresse 76.76.DMusic: 17th Century Flemish MelodyText: Michael Gannon Or: I bow before you, Virgin of virgins,resting-place of the divine Bridegroom, temple of eternal Wisdom, sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, palace of the Blessed Trinity,Mother full of love and tenderness, fountain of beauty, wellspring of wonders, golden key of God’s kingdom, you are the admiration of angels, the joy of the human family.Who can ever do justice to your glory,to your Queenship of grace? Eugenio Cantera (1880-1955) PSALMODYAnt.1 Mary arose and went in haste into the hill country, to a town of Judah. or: Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, for you carried the Creator of the world in your womb. Psalm 108Praise of God and a plea for helpSince the Son of God has been exalted above the heavens, his glory is proclaimed through all the earth (Arnobius) My heart is ready, O God;I will sing, sing your praise.Awake, my soul;awake, lyre and harp,I will awake the dawn. I will thank you, Lord, among the peoples, among the nations I will praise you,for your love reaches to the heavensand your truth to the skies.O God, arise above the heavens;may your glory shine on earth! O come and deliver your friends;help with your right hand and reply. From his holy place God has made this promise;I will triumph and divide the land of Shechem, But who will lead me to conquer the fortress?Who will bring me face to face with Edom? Will you utterly reject us, O God,and no longer march with our armies? Give us help against the foe,for the help of man is vain. With God we shall do bravelyand he will trample down our foes. Morning by morning I will silenceall the wicked in the land, uprooting from the city of the Lordall who do evil. Ant. 2 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant in her womb leaped for joy, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit. Or: Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Canticle Isaiah 61:10-62:5The prophet's joy in the vision of a new Jerusalem.I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, with the beauty of a bride adorned for her husband (Revelation 21:2). I rejoice heartily in the LORD,in my God is the joy of my soul;for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation, and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up,so will the Lord GOD make justice and praisespring up before all the nations. For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawnand her victory like a burning torch. Psalm 144:1-10Prayer for victory and peaceI can do all things in him who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my arms for battle, who prepares my hands for war. He is my love, my fortress;he is my stronghold, my saviormy shield, my place of refuge. He brings peoples under my rule. Lord, what is man that you care for him, mortal man, that your keep him in mind;man, who is merely a breathwhose life fades like a passing shadow? Lower your heavens and come down;touch the mountains; wreathe them in smoke.Flash your lightnings; rout the foe, shoot your arrows and put them to flight. Reach down from heaven and save me;draw me out from the mighty waters, from the hands of alien foeswhose mouths are filled with lies, whose hands are raised in perjury. To you, O God, will I sing a new song;I will play on the ten-stringed harpto you who give kings their victory, who set David your servant free. FIRST READING Joel 2:27-3:1a You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other; my people shall nevermore be put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit upon all mankind.Your sons and daughters shall prophesy. Or Song of Songs 2:8-14 Hark! my lover - here he comes springing across the mountains, leaping across the hills. My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag. Here he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the lattices. My lover speaks; he says to me, "Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come! "For see, the winter is past, the rains are over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of pruning the vines has come, and the song of the dove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines, in bloom, give forth fragrance.Arise, my beloved, my beautiful one, and come! "O my dove in the clefts of the rock, in the secret recesses of the cliff,Let me see you, let me hear your voice,For your voice is sweet, and you are lovely." SECOND READING From a Encyclical Letter Redemptoris Mater of Pope John Paul II(Number 36, 25 March 1987) The whole salvific economy is concentrated in the Mother of Christ. When Elizabeth greeted her young kinswoman coming from Nazareth, Mary replied with the Magnificat. In her greeting, Elizabeth first called Mary "blessed" because of "the fruit of her womb," and then she called her "blessed" because of her faith. These two blessings referred directly to the Annunciation. Now at the Visitation, when Elizabeth's greeting bears witness to that culminating moment, Mary's faith acquires a new consciousness and a new expression. That which remained hidden in the depths of the "obedience of faith" at the Annunciation can now be said to spring froth like a clear and life-giving flame of the spirit. The words used by Mary on the threshold of Elizabeth's house are an inspired profession of her faith, in which her response to the revealed word is expressed with the religious and poetical exultation of her whole being towards God. In these sublime words, which are simultaneously very simple and wholly inspired by the sacred texts of the people of Israel, Mary's personal experience, the ecstasy of her heart, shines forth. In them shines a ray of the mystery of God, the glory of his ineffable holiness, the eternal love which, as an irrevocable gift, enters into human history. Mary is the first to share in this new revelation of God and within the same, in this new "self-giving" of God. Therefore she proclaims" "For he who is mighty has done great things for me and holy is his name." Her words reflect a joy of spirit which is difficult to express: "My spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Indeed, "the deepest truth about God and the salvation of man is made clear to us in Christ, who is at the same time the mediator and the fullness of all revelation." In her exultation Mary confesses that she finds herself in the very heart of this fullness of Christ. She is conscious that the promise made to the fathers, first of all "to Abraham and to his posterity for ever," is being fulfilled in herself. She is thus aware that concentrated within herself as the Mother of Christ is the whole salvific economy, in which "from age to age" is manifested he who, as the God of the Covenant, "remembers his mercy." RESPONSORYThe Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning. - The Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning. He has taken her to live with him, - his loved one from the beginning.Glory to the Father... - The Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning. Or: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. - Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. - The Lord is with you.Glory to the Father... - Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. CANTICLE OF ZECHARIAH Luke 1:68-79Ant. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she cried out and said: Who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The Messiah and his forerunner Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathersand to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,to set us free from the hands of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvationby the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our Godthe dawn from on high shall break upon us,to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. INTERCESSIONS Let us glorify our Savior, who chose the Virgin Mary for his mother. Let us ask him: May your mother intercede for us, Lord. Son of Justice, the immaculate Virgin was the white dawn announcing your rising. – grant that we may always live in the light of your coming. Lord, help us imitate Mary, your mother, who chose the best part, - may we seek the food that will sustain us for ever. Savior of the world, by your redeeming might you preserved your mother before-hand from all stain of sin, - keep watch over us, lest we sin. You are our redeemer, who made the immaculate Virgin Mary your purest home and the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, - make us temples of your Spirit for ever. Our Father… CONCLUDING PRAYER Eternal Father, you inspired the Virgin Mary, mother of your Son,to visit Elizabeth and assist her in her need.Keep us open to the working of your Spirit, and with Mary may we praise you for ever. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. May the Lord bless us,protect us from eviland bring us to everlasting life. - Amen.
In the episode, Empowerment Starts Here with the Host (she’s flying solo). In it, she speaks about the practice of critical self-reflecting. She talks through foundational conditions required for self-reflecting: hunting for the location of power within the self; communicating with others to gain a deeper understanding of self and power; and being active and passive (reflective) in the work of social change so as to get closer to the espoused self (the idealized self). Not only does she provide the foundation for critical self-reflection, she provides examples from when she was an organizational leader responsible for promoting a collective practice for critical self-reflection.
God has espoused His people (the Church) to Himself as a chaste bride. His desire for His bride is that she would be obedient and holy, without blemish, spot or wrinkle. He desires His bride to love Him with all of her heart, soul, mind and strength.

How to formulate, refine, and articulate your teaching philosophy. Podcast notes The academic portfolio: A practical guide to documenting teaching, research, and service by J. Elizabeth Miller Miller provides examples of the narrative from actual promotion and tenure portfolios. What is a teaching philosophy? Why we teach. Why teaching matters. Not just a formula for teaching structure, but the rationale behind the structure. Why is having a teaching philosophy important? Helps guide our teaching methods. Needed in the job hunting process. Typically part of the promotion/tenure process at most universities. How to identify, articulate, & refine it? Questions from The Academic Portfolio (p. 13): What do I believe about the role of a teacher, the role of a student? Why do I teach the way I do? What doesn't learning look like when it happens? Why do I choose the teaching strategies and the methods that I use? How do I assess my students learning? Questions of my own that I have found useful in articulating my teaching philosophy: Who are my students? How I describe them says a lot about how I approach my teaching. Who am I, as an educator? How I describe myself says a lot about my teaching, too. What is teaching? Is the purpose to convey information, or to facilitate learning (or something else altogether)? Planet Money episode about young woman becoming a business owner in North Korea. What are the artifacts of my teaching? Observable things. What would I see/hear/experience that would be evidence of those beliefs, if I was in your class? Espoused beliefs vs theories in use. Summary of today's show: The YouCat was a new specifically formulated for young people from the Catechism of the Catholic Church and first produced for World Youth Day Madrid in 2011, but it's such an accessible and contemporary expression of the faith that all ages can use and appreciate it. Scot Landry, Fr. Mark O'Connell and Dom Bettinelli dip into the YouCat's questions and answers on prayer to approach some basic understandings of how and why we pray and what the various phrases of a prayer like the Our Father really mean. We also have the text of this Sunday's Mass readings, which were discussed today as well.* First Reading for the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 20, 2013 (Isaiah 62:1-5) For Zion's sake I will not be silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her vindication shines forth like the dawn and her victory like a burning torch. Nations shall behold your vindication, and all the kings your glory; you shall be called by a new name pronounced by the mouth of the LORD. You shall be a glorious crown in the hand of the LORD, a royal diadem held by your God. No more shall people call you “Forsaken, “ or your land “Desolate, “ but you shall be called “My Delight, “ and your land “Espoused.” For the LORD delights in you and makes your land his spouse. As a young man marries a virgin, your Builder shall marry you; and as a bridegroom rejoices in his bride so shall your God rejoice in you. Second Reading for the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 20, 2013 (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) Brothers and sisters: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes. Gospel for the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, January 20, 2013 (John 2:1-11) There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus told the them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.
