Even the sweetest commands from our King are still commands. We may be tempted to view commands such as "Do not kill" as more weighty than the command "Look unto Christ." But both are spoken from the same authority, God himself. Therefore, they are worthy of the same attention, effort, and obedience. For the next few weeks, we will be discussing the command to look unto Jesus. There are several passages that state this command, each in a different way. But it is a theme of both the Old and the New Testaments. For this week's episode, Dr. John Snyder and Teddy James are getting help from a journal entry written in 1773 by John Newton. Many of you will know Newton as the author of "Amazing Grace," among other hymns. But the particular journal entry we are resourcing in this week's episode reads: This is the Ninth New Years day I have seen in this place. I have reason to say, The Lord crowneth every year with his goodness. The entrance of this finds me and my _ [dear Mary] in health and peace. I am still favoured with strength, and with some liberty for my public work and hope the Lord is still pleased to work by me, for the edification of his people already called, and the awakening of sinners. As to myself, It is given me to trust in the Lord Jesus for life and salvation – I know he is both willing and able to save. Upon him as an All-sufficient Saviour and upon his word of promise I build my hope, believing that he will not suffer me to be put to shame. My exercise of grace is faint, my consolations small, my heart is full of evil, my chief sensible burdens are, a wild ungoverned imagination, and a strange sinful backwardness to reading the Scriptures, and, to secret prayer. These have been my complaints for many years, and I have no less cause of complaint than formerly. But my eye and my heart is to Jesus. His I am, him I desire to serve, to him I this day would devote and surrender myself anew. O Lord, accept, support, protect, teach, comfort and bless me. Be thou my Arm, my Eye, my Joy and my Salvation. Mortify the power of sin, and increase the image of thy holiness in my heart. Anoint me with fresh oil, make me humble, faithful, diligent and obedient. Let me in all things attend to thy word as my rule, to thy glory as my end, and depend upon thy power and promise for safety and success. I am now in the 49th year of my age, and may expect in the course of a few years at most to go whence I shall no more return, nor have I a certainty of continuing here a single year or even a month or a day. May thy grace keep me always waiting till my appointed change shall come, and when the summons shall come may I be enabled to rejoice in thee, as the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. For the rest of this podcast series, we will be getting help from the first few chapters of Looking Unto Jesus by Isaac Ambrose. This 17th-century book was written after a prolonged illness and has been helping Christians gaze at the surpassing beauty of Jesus Christ for over 400 years. Looking Unto Jesus was out of print for some time, but we were happy to find it available for sale again. We were so happy, in fact, that we bought two copies to give away at the end of this series. If you would like to be entered to win a copy, you can join the Media Gratiae email list. Send us a textToday, we embark on a journey through Colossians 3, and we look at several things. We are to set our affections on things above, not on things here on this earth. We are dead to the world, and our lives are hidden with Christ. Christ is our life, and we will appear with Him in glory. Because of all these things, we are to mortify the members of our bodies, which means to put to death. There are quite a few things Paul said we must put to death, and we take a little time discussing all of them. In our Q&A segment, we were asked this question: How did the Jews end up killing Jesus? It seems like they were so meticulous in keeping the Law.If you want a blessing today, go ahead and listen to this study!

CCPhilly Wednesday Teachings

3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 3:6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 3:11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

When giving directions on how to mortify sin, it is important to properly define it. Without this, the instructions are too abstract. As well, we examine two letters written from struggling saints. One to me in the last couple of years, one written in 1754 to the Pastor Samuel Pike and Samuel Hayward. Recorded in Cases of Conscience.

Do not take the practical application of Colossians 3 out of context and turn it into legalism. Mortifying the flesh does not mean you can fix your problems through will-worship. You must address to the Spirit the sins you grapple with. Stay connected in identity with Christ: you are either living in Christ and in the Spirit or you are living out of Christ and in the flesh. Most of us know of someone who has either walked away from the faith or refused to accept the Gospel because of the bad behavior of Christians. That's not a valid excuse for unbelief, but it is interesting that even the harshest critics of Christianity expect high moral standards from Believers.--Peter reminds us that our testimony is an essential part of our sharing the Gospel and bringing glory to God - which is our primary reason for remaining here on the earth. We have been bought with a price and owe nothing to the world, so why would we serve the flesh? If we live by the flesh we will die; if we die to the flesh we will live. We need to put the old (fleshly) man to death and mortify, or kill, the fleshly deeds. Mortification is not 1) perfection; 2) deceiving others about your sin; 3) improvement toward a quiet, sedated nature; 4) simply diverting a sin; or 5) occasional conquests over sin. It is a constant duty of believers, and sin must be killed, whatever it takes. In the end, it’s accomplished by the Spirit, not by self-strength. We labor, but it’s the Lord’s power.

Is it really necessary to do a whole episode on sins that men are more prone to commit? Pastor Steve and guest Steve Peck think so, and tackle as many as they can in an hour (with minimal sidetracking). So, is it alright to imply that there are sins that men are more likely to fall prey to? Begin Show Notes: Lust of the flesh, eyes. 1 Jn 2:16 a.Who made sex? b. Is sex one of those pre-fall “good things?” sex is good. c. What's sex for? i. to produce households. ii. to powerfully bind man and woman (also chemically, with chemicals such as oxytocin) iii. mutual pleasure (intended for pleasure) d. But we are fallen, and we (men!) can twist, corrupt, pervert. i. Turn it into forn, adult, and any other sexual perversion. ii. Seek to fulfill outside where God intends. Premarit. Extra marit. Divorce w/o legit. Porn. So lust is definitely one of the sins of men. e.What can you do? i. Flee - 1 Cor 6 (Joseph). ii. Pluck out eyes. Take radical measures. Not half hearted. iii. Put off and put on. 1 Cor 6. Such were some of you. iv. Romans 6:12, Confess James 5:16. The pride of life God has given men a desire to subdue and rule. a. Can be turned into power and success and possessions for ego's sake. b. 1 Jn - pride of life. Pride - devil b/c he devil. c. What to do? Mortify. Scpt. “Boast not thyself.. Let another man praise you…” Passivity. Distraction. What were men created to do? Exercise dominion. Be head. Create a family. (Gen 1, Mt 28). But what might happen? Sinful, distracted, passive, redirect that drive to other things. Lazy - Proverbs - A lion! As door… Substitute the dopamine drip of fake dominion (game). Fake woman (online). What can you do? - Turn aggressive instincts (T) to productive endeavors. Get a real woman. Real job. Real career. Real dominion. Eschatology (side-tracked). a. Basic definition- The end of things, so in the case of the Bible, the end times. b. Steve and Steve describe the different positions White knight syndrome. [Good To Be A Man, Michael Foster (88-93)]. My job is to affirm my women (or affirm women). When I affirm, good job. Job done. a. God has put a drive in men to defend and protect. But we're fallen, and that drive can go off course. How? b. Everything does - motive is to gain approval of a woman. To avoid her disapproval. His desire is for female validation. He's working to do whatever is needed for her to affirm him. What's he to do? Affirm. c. So, for example, his wife is misbehaving. Address the emotions? No - Affirms. Sit and listen deeply, and then affirm. Just affirm. d. What does he need to do? He needs to lead. Objective, bring the Word of God to bear. e. There are pastors who fit this profile. They do the same thing with women in the flock. i. Won't call out the sins of women (not even aware that there is such a category) ii. Affirm women, even when not appropriate iii. When women want things - (it's good to be a man, p 89) 1. Affirm anyone who is relational/agreeable, ignore their error (b/c made, fueled to knit people together) 2. Exclude anyone who is disagreeable, regardless of the fact that they're fighting for orthodoxy. 3. Page 91 of Good To Be A Man, Michael Foster iv. Ends up -> Enable influencer women to lead the church into error. Failure to lead. a. Who's supposed to lead? Garden, OT, NT - Adam to lead. Created first. Time gap. Man to lead. b. Lead on what? To lead on Mission. What mission? i. Gen 1 mission. ii. Mt 28 mission. iii. Lead family on God's mission. Lead sons, daughters.. Shape and form into resp disciples iv. Fail. Fail to address problems, deal redemptively. Fail to apply wisdom. Crude Joking a. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. (Eph 5:4) Violence. a. Men are capable of much violence. In a fallen world, we need. We only have peace and safety b/c of violent men out on the perimeters… Willing. b. That capability for violence can be good, or bad. Men have to decide. Lawful or unlawful. c. Prison populations (93%. Oppression!!!! Why can't women be equally rep?). Murders. Anger - testosterone. FOTS = self control. Gentleness. Love of money & possessions (hobbies) - a root of all kinds of evil. Too interested in money. Inordinately - money. a. How do I know when? When money is more important than the will of God. When trust in money. When you ignore God-given priorities to make more money. Ignore family. b. Workaholic (temperament). c. What to do? Love Christ. Love family. End of Show Notes: We hope that this installment of Grounded has been formative to your walk with Christ!
