(PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Self-described "content machine" Nate Marchand shares about his several creative endeavors.Shin Godzilla is weird. Not necessarily as weird as Hideaki Anno's previous work, but definitely weird when compared to previous Godzilla material. At its face value, there's a lot to appreciate about the film. However, it's best understood in the light of modern Japanese history; most notably, the 3/11 disaster.Shin Godzilla is baked in Japanese culture almost to a fault, in that it makes a lot of the rich nuance of the film hard to engage as foreigners. On this day in 1954, the King of the Monsters made his big screen debut when the original “Godzilla” premiered in Nagoya, Japan. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Not too long after the invention of film, filmmakers began finding ways to put common emotions to the big screen. Happiness in comedies, sadness in dramas, love in romance. And of course, fear in horror. Horror films hold an important space in film history and is a genre that oftentimes uses a disguised placed mirror to society to source scares. And one disguise used is the movie monster. Creature features, if you will. Beasts, mummies, lab grown monsters, aliens, and vampires have been terrifying (and/or arousing) audiences for decades and this week, we're taking a look into a brief-ish history of the movie monster. ~~ Follow the show on Instagram: @theafternoonspecial Tik Tok: @theafternoonspecial Twitter: @hiimbobbi Email the show at theafternoonspecialtv@gmail.com ~~ Afternoon Special is brought to you by QCODE. We've all got one. The thing we saw in a movie or heard a scary story about that struck a nerve somewhere within us, perhaps in our youth, causing a fear we can't quite explain that persists into adulthood. For me, it's not a monster, but it's body horror that really gets under my skin. But for so many, the movies they watched as children and the monsters within them have left lasting impressions. Whether it's Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Mummy, or Pennywise the clown from Stephen King's IT, there's most likely some creature on this list that scared you as a kid and possibly still does. This week's Nose has been traveling 22 years to get here, and now it's here, and it's either heads or tails, and you have to say. Hollywood continues its seeming slow-speed suicide. It's hard to imagine it even really capitalizing on the huge and ongoing Barbenheimer phenomenon. The Nose continues to be concerned. But. The Meg 2 is finally here! Actually, that exclamation point notwithstanding, The Nose doesn't really care about The Meg 2. But it does care about — and have various beefs with — this Meg 2-pegged ranking of movie monsters.
