Show notes from John Holl: "If you've been listening to this show as well as Steal This Beer over the last few weeks there's been a focus in and around the Rochester, New York area breweries.  Rochester is of course well known for Genesee Beer, but over the last decade has emerged as a craft beer destination, fueled by small breweries who are paying careful attention to recipes, integrating into the local fabric through art and music, and giving chefs a chance to shine in the kitchens.  Among the many bright spots of the city's beer scene is Strangebird.  It opened in January 2021 inside a sprawling yet solid building that once held a food co-op and immediately impresses with its well designed taproom, barrel aging space, and impactful kitchen.  Micah Krichinsky is a founder and brewer. He's a student of biochemistry and microbiology and a graduate of the Master Brewer's Program at the University of California at Davis. His career before Rochester had him at Capitol City Brewing in Washington, D.C. and then later at at Dogfish Head in Delaware, where he spent five years.   Eric Salazar is the brewery's Director of Wood Aged Beers. His career started back in the 1990s at New Belgium Brewing Co. where, as you'll hear, he learned to work with barrels and to trust and respect microbes.  Both of the brewers found their way to Rochester by way of their significant others, and are not only putting down family roots in the city but also long-term plans for the brewery and fostering the local beer scene.  They spoke with me from the bar where they were happily popping bottles, and I started off by asking about lessons learned from working at older breweries and the benefit of having nearly full careers before starting something of their own." This Episode is sponsored by:Stomp StickersStomp Stickers is a proud member of the Brewers Association that produces a wide variety of printed brewery products such as beer labels, keg collars, coasters, beer boxes and much more. Annabel Reader and Dan Huling are simply in love with creating shoes. The Colorado Shoe School was a natural evolutionary step from Dan and Annabel's past 20 years of creative and artistic work. Annabel earned a bachelor's degree in Contemporary Dance and Choreography from Unitec, Auckland, New Zealand and Dan focused on Sculpture and Printmaking as he earned a BFA from Colorado State University.Over the years, they went on to work in a variety of art fields as costume creators, performers, dancers and contraption builders for their own companies like The Handsome Little Devils and EyeSoar Performance and for large entities including New Belgium Brewing Co., Colorado Opera, Colorado State University, Theatre Aspen, and Cirque Du Soleil.Annabel's costume work led her to begin exploring the art of shoe making and in late 2017 they had a fate changing opportunity to attend a Shoe School in New Zealand. After traveling the world as performers they were playing with a change in career and attending this workshop was the catalyst to starting the Colorado Shoe School. They love sharing skills, teaching others, creating things that don't currently exist and absolutely love shoes so it was a short distance to building a custom shoe making studio in order to teach others how to make their own shoes. In 2018 Colorado Shoe School opened its doors! They focus both on the functionality and the methods behind shoe making, but the main drive is letting whimsy and fun lead to a new creation.  Both of their career paths have required them to come up with creative interpretations of characters, inventive ways to design things and build alternative dream worlds. Simply creating and making things that have never been seen in this world before.###Your hosts of Are You Waiting for Permission? are Meridith Grundei and Joseph Bennett. Wayne's World 2 came hot off the heels of its smash hit predecessor. The first—which remains the most successful Saturday Night Live-inspired film—grossed over $180 million worldwide. Suffice to say, Wayne's World 2 could not replicate that success. Earning just $48 million on double the budget ($40 million), its returns were a disappointment. Some would say they, "licked the cat's butt." The dismal gross would also suggest that Wayne's World 2 is demonstrably worse than the first. That's simply not true. Is it derivative? Sure. But it's also consistently funny, generating enough new gags to keep the most cynical of us entertained—even if just moderately. Anyway, if you've got a fine eye for details, perhaps some of the recycled material will bother you. If not, watch and enjoy the sequel for what it is, cross the Ts, dot the lowercase js, and party on! The Adventures of Pluto Nash is the epitome of how this podcast came to be. For starters, it is just a terrible film. Critics agreed. With 90 reviews, it sits at just 4% on Rotten Tomatoes; users responded slightly more favorably with 19%. It also stars Eddie Murphy, who at one time was one of the biggest stars on this planet or any other. Despite the bad word of mouth, though, even awful movies inexplicably make money sometimes. Norbit and Daddy Day Care—also in the Eddie Murphy dreck hall of fame—each grossed over $150 million. Pluto Nash's fate wasn't so kind. It tanked. On a ballooned budget of around $160 million, it grossed under $10 million total (the actual figure is just over $7), making it one of the largest bombs in box office history. At the time of its release, it held the crown. That loss was a catastrophic one. It resulted in massive layoffs at Castle Rock, the movie's co-distributor, and landed director Ron Underwood in big screen jail. Money aside, Pluto Nash, quite frankly, is the antithesis of funny. Between the off-putting ogling of Nash's android companion Bruno (Randy Quaid) and Murphy's disinterested turn, it's sort of astounding it was ever brought off the shelf it had collected dust on for years. And with ideas and visuals as lazy as its comedic execution, one can't help but wonder why they continued to pour money into it. If reports are to be believed, Pluto Nash was so disastrous that the studio had to pony up tens of millions of dollars for reshoots. They even hired Oscar-winning editor Alan Heim to polish them. Heim, dissatisfied with what he saw, determined there wasn't enough of the three-hour work print that was even usable. Thus, more reshoots ensued—a desperate dance to redeem the irredeemable. Folks, it's hard to recommend you even watch this thing. There is just nothing to celebrate about it. But, hey, that's part of the fun. So sit back, chug—literally chug—a few Voodoo Ranger Starship IPAs from New Belgium Brewing Co., and boogie to some lunar beats with Bruno and Babette! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash (aka Rex Crater), and Chumpzilla, are doing our damndest not to just lie down and die in the middle of a moon crater. This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – In an explosive first round KO, Pluto Nash wrenched the Shit Movie Championship away from Cutthroat Island. We explain why. (00:00) Lingering Questions and the Moon Beach Trivia Challenge – First, Chumpzilla challenges us to Pluto Nash/Eddie Murphy-themed trivia. And then, with what's left of our resolve, we tackle whether or not this movie could've been salvaged. (53:25) Recommendations – Time is a construct. And next up: It's Kilmer time, as we hunt down The Ghost and the Darkness! (1:11:30) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram (new and shiny!) to check out all the interesting factoids—Murphy's bizarre desire to rescue this project and more—from this week’s episode! Good Beer Hunting

Welcome to the very first Sightlines episode of the Good Beer Hunting podcast. These episodes are where we dig in to a timely topic with experts from around the country, working to make you and us smarter about what’s going on in the beer industry right now. This week, brewers around the country are dealing with the ramifications of the government shutdown, which means that key agencies like the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau—often referred to as the TTB—are entirely unresponsive, and that means that almost nothing new can legally come to market until those agencies are re-opened and the backlog is cleared. The TTB is critical for brewers who need label and formation approvals for their beers in order to package and sell them. So what’s going to happen in an industry that survives almost exclusively off new releases? To catch us up to speed, we’re going to talk to Jared Treanor, Brand Manager of Brewery Ommegang in New York, and Ashley Brandt, a Chicago attorney who works with breweries of all sizes. (He’s also, incidentally, GBH’s attorney.) Thanks for listening. Sightlines is the news and analysis section of Good Beer Hunting, and it’s focused the evolution of the beer industry. We’re excited to turn it into an ongoing podcast series! Good Beer Hunting is supported in part by our underwriters, New Belgium Brewing Co. out of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Guinness, which is based in Dublin, and newly in Baltimore County, Maryland. And as always, we’re supported by the Fervent few, a community of subscribers. You can support GBH by joining.

About the author & the story. I have always enjoyed an ice cold beer, especially on a hot summer day. Whether I choose a beer, a glass of wine or cocktail occasionally depends on my mood and the foods I am enjoying. My taste in beer leans toward the micro brews or European beers. While Coors was the old standby for my parents, I like to try different brews and steer clear of the US mass produced beers. Living on the Central Coast of California in wine country I tend to choose a local wine most often. For the next year I have vowed to try more beers, especially locally brewed and learn as much as I can. While guys may share a beer with us girls, the art of brewing and the fanaticism surrounding the beverage has been mostly the domain of men. I will pass along my adventures into the manly world of beer through this website. How it all started. It all started with the simple idea that having a kegerator in your home was “green” and one little step in decreasing the number of bottles and cans we send to the recycler. A while back, I saw a program on the Planet Green network about a couple in Brooklyn, NY that had installed a tap above their kitchen counter. I thought it was a brilliant idea to go green for any beer lover, thus the idea of putting a kegerator in our kitchen was born, which meant we might as well gut the kitchen and start over. Needless to say, my beer loving husband took the idea and ran with it. Not only were we able to find a place to hide the keg refrigerator, we designed our new concrete countertops so the tap could be above the sink and thus no mess. Many of my girlfriends have cursed me as their husbands are now ready to remodel just to have a tap in the kitchen. I found a used kegerator for a great price of $250 (saving about 400). The only problem with the kitchen remodel was that the access point for the kegs would be from the front porch so then we had to remodel the entrance to our home. More work – but in the long run it improved the look and feel of the house. Now with a tap in the kitchen and cold draught beer on hand I have a renewed fondness for beer. Good beer that is! The inaugural keg was Fat Tire Amber Ale by New Belgium Brewing Co. There is nothing better than an icy glass filled with draught beer. We had been buying Fat Tire in the bottles, but I still think it tastes better from the tap. Once we were all set up, I realized I had created a monster in my husband and not for the reasons you may be thinking. Having the kegerator has now led to home brewing. In less than a month, we have become setup with additional Cornelious kegs, large kettles for brewing, glass containers called carboys for fermenting and more. We have 2 batches brewing and eagerly await the day of tasting. While my husband is the primary consumer and brewmaster at our house, I am surprised at my interest in the process and the different types of beers and all that goes along with it. So for now I will share my adventures into the world of beer and brewing from a woman’s point of view. So far, it does appear that it is still very much a man’s world and we will see if they will let me into the club, even if it is only a temporary membership.
