Louise P. Sloane (b. 1952) has been active as an abstract painter since 1974, infusing her works with personal text that motivates her own experimentation. The visual language of her paintings continues the legacy of reductive and minimalist ideologies, while celebrating color and the human inclination towards mark making. Sloane's detail-oriented works are typically divided into rectangles or squares. The quadrangle has become a repetitive motif, often centrally featured within the context of a grid. In contrast with her iterative geometries, it is important to Sloane that the works present themselves as human made objects. Thick paint constructs repetitive handmade patterns, the physical motion of her brush strokes revealing the humanity of her practice. The surface holds Sloane's signature extrusions. Painstakingly written and overwritten, Sloane's inscribed text is a form of private meditation. Turned into a relief, and abstracted through color blocking, the text is interpreted through its physicality, not its meaning. Contrasting color choices intensify the dimensionality of the surface texture. Sloane uses color straight-up, without mixing. Blending takes place optically, as one color reacts to the other, red against green, or blue against yellow. The elements of mark-making, color, and geometry compete for the viewer's focus, keeping the eyes and mind in constant motion, unifying her interests in the form of the square. Sloane's work has been featured in numerous institutional collections, including the Hunterdon Museum of Art, Coral Springs Museum of Art, the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, and Cornell Museum of Art and History. Sloane's works are in the permanent collections of the Heckscher Museum of Art, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Nassau County Museum of Art, Yeshiva University Museum, the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (the Sidney and Francis Lewis Collection).

Leave us a Review Brooklyn based fine artist Daniel Maidman's drawings and paintings have been featured in The Huffington Post, and Forbes, and exhibited in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Long Beach Museum of Art. Daniel's Instagram following at the time of writing this is over 124,000 people and it's well deserved. His mostly monochromatic figurative drawings of the human form are captivating and strike a delicate balance between highly labored renderings and minimalist linework. In this episode, Daniel talks about what life is like as a working artist. We also talk about his signature style and how his love of previous generations of artists before him influenced his work. We also got into the discipline of being a professional artist and the right and left brain connection of the entrepreneurial side of being an artist.  We even had a plot twist later in the episode when we learn that Daniel's work is heading to the moon. When you got to an art gallery, how much of what you see has been made by women? Women artists are underrepresented in most museums. But this year, a special series at the New Britain Museum of American Art will exclusively feature exhibitions by female artists. This hour, we talk with the museum’s director, Min Jung Kim. We also talk with Shantell Martin, a visual artist whose work will be featured in a solo exhibition at the New Britain Museum of American Art. And later, we hear from a member of the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous group of women artists and activists who’ve protested disparities in museums collections. How does the predominance of white men in the art world skew our perceptions of what’s good or valuable art?Support the show: http://wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Nick Napoletano is a painter, muralist and designer known for hyperrealist works brimming with allegory and symbolism. His work can be found in galleries and museums internationally, including the collections of Amway and the New Britain Museum of American Art. He recently exhibited at Jerald Melberg Gallery and at the Mint Museum. He has painted a series of large-scale exterior murals in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has expanded his work into the fields of augmented and virtual reality.  Nick earned a Bachelor's of Fine Arts at the University of Hartford, Connecticut. This episode is perfect for anyone interested in figurative painting, public art, augmented and virtual reality, and the challenges and rewards of 'a monkey mind.'   IN THIS EPISODE Nick describes the three different trajectories of his work. He explains how his art reflects Mannerism and the High Renaissance. He discusses measuring himself against Renaissance masters. He considers whether his art challenges the viewer, the illustrations of Norman Rockwell, the role of public art, and whether it is enough for public to just be beautiful. Nick talks about one of his murals and the idea that informs it. He answers whether he prefers public or private art commissions, the challenge of his 'monkey mind,' and what an unfettered public art project might be. He describes the work of Two Form, a design collaboration group merging our world with augmented and virtual reality. He explains how he paints augmented reality components onto sculpted spaces to enhance dialog between the work and viewers. Nick talks about his work creating digital worlds using virtual reality. He shares how Nordic and biophilic design influences his art. He shares what he remembers seeing as a child and how his interest in figurative work developed. He considers what it means being an artist and moving through the world differently. Nick talks about living and painting in New York, taking a tour of the south, and what Snug Harbor has to do with why he lives in Charlotte. He discusses a current recurring dream, a question on his mind, what delights him, what truth he wants revealed, a vision he has, what he is certain about, what draws him in, and what matters most. Mark Peres adds a personal word that begins this way, "As I sat across from Nick Napoletano I thought of Leonard da Vinci. I imagined Leonardo explaining his art to a journalist or at least trying to as the journalist busily scribbled away..." To learn more, visit On Life and Meaning.
