I'm Josh Cooperman and this is Convo By Design. After 10 years doing this show, I am still happy to say that I love doing it. If I'm being completely honest, it's not because I am surprised and delighted by the design. I am, but that's not why. I have grown accustomed to seeing extraordinary design and architecture. Spectacular new products, amazingly talented creatives doing the work. But it is the people and their stories that keep me in a childlike state of wonder. That is why I continue to love doing this show the way I do. And today's episode is no different. This is part of a series called American Made By Hand and it features a friend, Brad Glock who turns wood into exquisite pieces of Americana. And you are about to hear his story. Designer Resources ThermaSol - Redefining the modern shower experience. Episode 271 featuring Mitch Altman Moya Living -  Beautiful, durable powder coated kitchen, bath & outdoor kitchen cabinetry Design Hardware - A stunning and vast collection of jewelry for the home! I met Brad while learning to turn myself, something I have wanted to do for a very long time. After moving to Oklahoma to work on the design house, I had the chance to do that and Brad was one of the instructors. Turning is like any other passion or endeavor, you have to love doing it and the skill and art follow, as is the case with Brad. His work is amazing. As always, you can check the show notes for links to Brad's work, but what is to follow is my conversation with Brad as part of a new series I'm starting called American Made By Hand. As the best designers know, if you're accessorizing, clients want the story, the provenance, an understanding of the meaning behind products and materials they are bringing into their homes. Brad is an artist, and a craftsman. Years ago, you might recall me speaking with Rossoblu chef and restauranteur Steve Samson who explained that he was a craftsman, not an artist. He could make something you've eaten before in Northern Italy, and it would taste like his grandmother's grandmother made it, but he doesn't create new work. That left an indelible mark on my brain. It did. A desire not to create, but recreate with exactness… Amazing. But, Brad is an artist and a craftsman. He innovates using wood, a lathe and other items as they materialize. I had an idea, I asked Brad to work with me to create a custom tableware set for the Tulsa Remote Design House Project. We ideated, designed it and he turned it. I did sand though, and I have a scar to prove it. That is a story for another day. I consider Brad a friend and I am thrilled, truly to share his story with you. This is Brad Glock on Convo By Design's, American Made: By Hand. Thank you, Brad. Love your work and I cannot wait to share images of this incredible tableware set. A side note, this collection is available for purchase, not this exact one, but one of your own, customized just for your project. Make sure to contact me directly. Message me @ConvoXDesign or email me at Convo By Design at Outlook dot com. Thank you to my partners and sponsors ThermaSol, Moya Living and Design Hardware. You can find direct links to them and to Brad in the show notes. Thank you for listening and subscribing to the show. Remember why you do what you do and for whom you do it. I appreciate you, I do this for you. Be well and until next week, take today first.

Spirit, Soul & Passion are evident in a truly great restaurant. You know it the moment you walk in the door. The way you are greeted and made to feel welcome… the sights, sounds and smells that build anticipation. These are just the surface elements, but it’s the mission statement, the foundation and inspiring leadership that truly create greatness. This episode so moved me. My guest Mr. Hans Luttmann is the Managing Partner and Director of Hospitality for the San Julian Restaurant Group in Los Angeles. His restaurant is called Rossoblu, a concept bringing to life the rich legacy of cooking and viniculture of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Even the pasta is hand-crafted by a master artisan brought in from Bologna. Hans is far from a figurehead. He’s a truly hands-on soulful leader that motivates his team from the deep love of running truly great restaurants. The passion of Rossoblu is contagious and instilled in each member of the staff. The guest can’t help but feel there’s some magic happening here. Hans and I speak about cultivating and nurturing a great staff, the importance of daily training, maintaining the all-important financial controls, creating a warm inviting ambiance that captures the diner’s imagination and the marketing strategy that defines the brand. We even talk about how to share the wealth between front and back of house. In a sea of competition whether you’re new to the business or a veteran, this approach demonstrates how to open a restaurant, how to run a restaurant and how to increase restaurant business. Give a listen to this episode of the Restaurant RockStars Podcast. It’s all about breaking bread and how different cultures and humanity come together for the common love of food. Episode 26 - How to develop of restaurant culture of humility and care Episode 26 - In this episode we start the first of many conversations with great international brands carving a path in the world of hospitality. Today I talk to Dina Samson and Hans Luttman from San Julian Hospitality which has the portfolio of Rossoblu and Superfine Pizza in Downtown L.A. Hans Luttmann is the Managing Partner and Director of Hospitality at Rossoblu restaurant and has been working in the restaurant business since the age of fifteen. Hans captained Michelin starred teams at Hatfield’s, Osteria Mozza and Providence. He is known as a creative, results-oriented leader who loves to build teams and empower his staff. Dina Samson has adeptly assumed the role of “accidental restaurateur” having opened her first restaurant, Sotto, alongside husband/chef Steve Samson in 2011, quickly learning the ropes as the opening general manager. When her husband, Steve, sought her expertise in financing his first restaurant, she soon became integral to the nascent restaurant’s daily operation, taking on all marketing and finance responsibilities. They have expanded their brand of hospitality through San Julian Hospitality with Rossoblu, their acclaimed ode to Bologna, and Superfine Pizza, which is widely considered the first “LA” pizza, melding the best traits from Neapolitan traditions and New York style. Samson also miraculously finds time to raise young twins, Luca and Gaia. In todays episode we cover: -How they focus on bringing customers back with great customer service -The best way to balance a busy work life and family -How the atmosphere of a restaurant can really add to the customer experience -The simple things you can do to give a positive mindset to the team you lead everyday I really enjoyed today’s episode and I hope you do too, it will give you a great understanding of how to develop great teams by bringing in the elements of care for your staff, great product and atmosphere, and the ability to look forward positively to new challenges. Design and food go hand in glove, the similarities are too numerous to mention all but consider texture, color and the connections we make with food, as we do with design that remind us of moments in time and places that make us happy. I had the opportunity to catch up with Steve Samson, a cornerstone of the Southern California culinary community. Samson is the chef and owner of not one but two Los Angeles restaurants on note, Sotto and Rossoblu. Steve has mastered the art of Italian cuisine and there is a very good reason for that, he has always had one foot firmly planted in Southern California and the other in Northern Italy, Bologna to be exact. You will hear Steve tell the story, and he can explain it far better than I can. But visiting his Bolognese family each year as he grew up allowed him to develop a feel for the Bolognese style of cooking, he was immersed in it and that is why he has focused his culinary career on Italian cooking. Samson has been recognized by Jonathan Gold, the LA Times, LA Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, Eater LA the Robb Report and others for his accomplishments as culinary star. As you will hear, Steve doesn’t really pay attention to that because he just wants to cook, for you. Thank you for listening. If you like what you hear, and I hope you do.
