STATUS QUO: Boogie Rock Brilliance with Drummer JOHN COGHLAN

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 15, 2023 52:00

Status Quo are one of Britain's longest-running bands, staying together for over six decades. During much of that time, the group was only successful in the U.K., where they racked up a string of Top Ten singles over the decades. In America, the Quo were ignored after they abandoned psychedelia for heavy boogie rock in the early '70s. Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" Following that single, the group suffered a lean period for the next few years before the band members decided to refashion themselves as a hard rock boogie band in 1970. The Quo have basically recycled the same simple boogie on each successive album and single, yet their popularity has never waned. If anything, their very predictability ensured the group a large following. The guys started out as The Spectres with Francis Rossi (vocals, guitar) Alan Lancaster (bass) drummer John Coghlan and organist Roy Lynes. The group added Rick Parfitt (guitar, vocals) and changed its name to Status Quo. Throughout the '70s, each album Status Quo released went into the Top Five, while their singles -- including the number one "Down Down" (1974), "Roll Over Lay Down" (1975), "Rain" (1976), "Wild Side of Life" (1976), and a cover of John Fogerty's "Rockin' All Over the World" (1977) - consistently hit the Top Ten. Since they were experiencing a great deal of success, they didn't change their sound at all, they just kept churning out the same heavy boogie. John Coghlan left Status Quo in 1981 – during rehearsals for the band's 20th Anniversary album in Switzerland. Tensions had developed and John left to form his own band. By 1983 his own band featured a selection of respected musicians, comprising; guitarist Ray Majors (ex-Mott and British Lions), bass player Ian Ellis (ex-Savoy Brown and Steamhammer), and keyboard player Jeff Banister. That same year John Coghlan teamed up with a trio of other well-known musicians called the Rockers. The four man line up boasted John on drums, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy's frontman) on bass, guitar and vocals, Chas Hodges (from Chas ‘n' Dave) on keyboards and Roy Wood (ex Wizzard, ELO and The Move) on guitar and vocals. Coghlan continued to tour regularly playing with various musicians. He began working with Alan Lancaster in Australia who was putting together a band with Australian guitarist John Brewster, called the Bombers. John worked with The Bombers for a year but returned to the UK in 1990. John Coghlan started working with his own band, John Coghlan's Quo, during the late 1990s. By that time, Status Quo had scored 50 British hit singles, which was more than any other band in rock & roll history at the time. This week John Coghlan joins us to explain what those heady days were like, why he left the band in 1981and what life holds for him today. Interview by Kris PetersNot only are The Angels an Australian music institution, they are also a band who, despite being around for more than four decades, show no sign of slowing down.Original guitarists Rick and John Brewster are the backbone of any musical incarnation featuring music from The Angels and are known as much for their natural ability and musicianship as they are for being part of one of this countries most successful and enduring rock outfits.Since Dave Gleeson took over vocal duties after the loss of Doc Neeson, The Angels have had to often work with and around the touring schedule of Gleeson's original band, The Screaming Jets, but in those moments of downtime Rick and John have steadfastly refused to lay down their guitars, instead continuing to tour and record in their own right. With Gleeson again away on duties, the brothers have now decided to revisit The Angels vast back catalogue and drag out some songs that have previously never or rarely been played live.Songs like Save Me, When The Time Comes, Dogs Are Talking, Moving On and City Out Of Control to name but a few have been given the kiss of life by Brewster Brothers Electric: Playing The Angels Rarities. Not only is the band - with fill in vocalist Nick Norton, Sam Brewster on bass and Mick Skelton on drums accompanying Rick and John - performing a select number of live shows, they have also released the EP Lives Of Grace featuring the tracks Night Attack, Lives Of Grace, Moving On and Small Price To Pay.HEAVY tracked down Rick Brewster to talk about the legacy and continued popularity of The Angels. We start by asking where he finds the drive and energy to keep pushing on with side projects where most people would be enjoying some down time."It's an opportunity to play some of the ... what would you call them ... we call them the rarities. When you think about songs like Dogs Are Talking or Eat City they are just songs we don't often play because there's not time in an Angels show. We've talked about doing rarities as a project with Dave but the thing is Dave is busy all the time. As soon as we finish an Angels tour he's out with The Screaming Jets. So we thought it's an opportunity, we've got this freak drummer Nick Norton who is also got a great voice and plays guitar and we thought let's put a band together, do The Angels rarities, get another drummer and put Nick out front."In the full interview we ask Rick how they even pick a set list of rarities that will appease fans, reinvigorating themselves by playing older tracks, having to re-learn the songs, the live show and what to expect, the new EP Lives Of Grace, the recent documentary movie The Angels: Kickin' Down The Door and what he thought of it, reflecting on their past achievements, upcoming shows, what's next when Dave comes back and more.

Who would have thought an album dedicated to Migloo the White Whale would be the catalyst for a chain of events that has seen Melbourne rock/punk outfit Dune Rats sweep all before them in 2022.Since releasing their latest album the impossibly difficult to say out loud Real Rare Whale earlier this year Dune Rats have toured relentlessly, suddenly and unforgivably becoming the darlings of Australian music. They have recorded a classic song by The Angels - with both Rick and John Brewster appearing, played to 1000's of punters in one night, won the Bangalow Billy Cart Derby and been nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal album at this years ARIA Awards. Not bad for a bunch of self confessed larrikins who don't even take spelling their own name seriously. This weeks release of album single Space Cadet and it's hilariously poignant film clip have ushered in the next chapter of Dune Rats quest for world domination, which early next year sees the battle lines drawn on a 45 date run encompassing the U.S.A, Canada, U.K and Europe.HEAVY tracked down frontman Danny Beus for a chat before his shining star becomes so bright that he no longer needs to bore himself with the trivialities of media promotion. We start by asking him about the latest single Space Cadet."It's one of those ones where it started off - like any one of our songs - the idea in general started off like when you're a kid and you wanna do a million things, but you either don't have the talent to do those things or really process what it takes to do them," he recounted. "Then the crushing realisation of your Mum and Dad telling you to go wash the fucken dishes up kind of brings you back down to reality (laughs). It started off as this joke between us when we were writing that someone has to go and do the dishes and it would be like 'go away, I'm trying to write a rock song here' but you've gotta do the dishes first mate and it all tied into that. That's where the genesis of the song started, and then like any of them we fleshed it out and did some good nah nah's and gave it a few ooh's and then, bang, it was a finished song. It was one of those ones where our producer liked the overall vibe of the song as well."In the full interview Danny talks about the film clip to Space Cadet and sheds some truth on the cash bonanza the band received from winning, the reception to Real Rare Whale, the downright nasty reasons behind naming the album as such, being nominated for the ARIA's, how their acceptance speech might go should they win, the cover of Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again for Triple J, having the Brewster brothers play on the track, the Dune Rats upcoming shows to round out the year, next years massive overseas tour, keeping it fun on the road and more.

We can't deny how we're wrapped up in a fast-paced world. With so much on our plates and little time, we often forget that there's beauty in the little things. Reading a good novel, dancing around, or playing our favourite music, are the little things we should look out for because there's much more to life than just paychecks and job rankings.   Today's guest will surely move your hearts with his words. Singer/songwriter John Brewster is on the show today to talk to us all about how he's been able to make his passion his lifestyle. Tag along with us, and let's hear more from John.   --- Listen to the podcast here: Music and All Things that Make Us Human With John Brewster Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. One thing I've been thinking about quite a bit for at least several years now is what makes all of us human, which is something that I feel is diminished in our modern society. When I talk about this, I talk about things like laughter, things like dancing, things like humor, and things like music -- things that don't necessarily have a specific material value in most corporate settings but provide a lot of value to our lives, a lot of value to our wellbeing.  My guest today, John Brewster, is a Boulder resident and a singer/songwriter who has managed to make a lifestyle out of music, which I'm sure a lot of people would love the possibility of doing if they only knew how.  --- John, welcome to the program.   Thanks so much for having me today, Stephen. I'm really excited to be here. Thank you.    Yeah, definitely. You're relatively new to Colorado, right?   Yes. I just moved here in August of 2021, and now, we're in March 2022 for the future nerds out there that listen to this. I've been here for a few months, just getting grounded into the mountain energy and just been loving it so far.   Where do you come from most recently?   South Carolina. I was in Charleston last. That's where I got my start in music as far as original music goes.   You do exclusively original music?   I do my own original music. It's my priority. To right now sustain my living, I play cover songs as well -- private events, weddings, knickknack things here and there, bar gigs, whatever has gotten me to this point. I've been open to those opportunities, which has helped to sustain and keep furthering my original music as well.   That's really neat. You said, you got your start in South Carolina, and then, you moved here to Colorado. If I recall correctly, you live on the outskirts of Boulder. What did you have to do to transfer that start, whatever you had going for you, word of mouth in South Carolina, and bring it to a new place?   Yeah. I started planting seeds pretty early. I played music all growing up in South Carolina. I had a pretty good network of connections and was doing it full-time. To give a little miniature backstory, I was in a band for several years in South Carolina. We played all the cover gigs and had a lot of good momentum, singing harmonies and stuff. We ended up touring all over the place in the East Coast, doing our own music. After that chapter came to a close, I decided to do my own music.    About a year ago, I visited Colorado. For the first time, before I released my first album, I was feeling this calling to go somewhere new, to get some fresh perspective. It was almost literally a coin toss between going to Austin or Denver. I was looking at Airbnbs. I was just going to drive -- just leave South Carolina, just go for an experience with myself, and see if I want to move somewhere new. It ended up being Denver. I found a spot to hang out for a couple of weeks. I just immediately knew I had to come back to Colorado.    Fast forward a few months later, my partner, Sarah, and I officially moved out here. That's when we started planting seeds of asking around -- who do you know who i...

The Angels are one Australian band that needs no introduction. After more than 40 years atop the Aussie rock tree, the band still shows no sign of slowing down.Part of that is due to the appointment of one Dave Gleeson to frontman duties just over ten years ago, another part due to the injection of youth in the form of drummer Nick Norton and bass player Sam Brewster, but mostly due to the irresistible talents of the bands two original guitarists, brothers Rick and John Brewster. Two years ago The Angels finished re-recording their trilogy of classic albums – Face To Face, No Exit and Darkroom - with the new lineup and were set to take the show to the road in celebration. Then, something happened to alter those plans, but now the boys are back and ready to go on two tours this year, Darkroom Recharged and the Greatest Hits showcase. While both concerts offer reasons of their own for attendance, the Darkroom Revisited run of dates promises to be something just that little bit extra.John Brewster sat down with HEAVY to discuss the tours."It's amazing,” he enthused. “It's quite bizarre that we were celebrating the Darkroom 40 year thing and we re-recorded the album just as a thing to do with this lineup of the band. This was all supposed to happen in 2020 and here we are 2022 and we can finally do it. It's gonna be great. What we do, is we do the whole album, we start off with that then have an intermission and we come back on and do other songs."The Angels recently performed for the first time at this years Byron Bay Bluesfest, with many, including the event organizer, labelling it one of the best sets ever played at the long running festival."Bluesfest is a big deal,” John smiled. “It's something that we've never played before believe it or not. We walked out on this massive stage to 30,000 people watching us and just to see that mass of people to start off with and the way that they responded to the band... I think we just rose to the occasion. We do anyway, but it was just something a bit extra special. Peter Noble who runs it rated our show as one of Bluesfests finest performances, and he is talking about of all time! We keep getting the same stuff from people, that we stood out from the crowd. There was a lot of great bands there. Maybe I'm bragging (laughs), I don't know."In the full interview John talks about what the band has in store for the shows, playing the first night in the birthplace of The Angels in Adelaide, recent shows including the Red Hot Summer Tour and Fist Full Of Rock, the new re-recordings and why they are so special, recent milestones including the 45th anniversary of debut single Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, how the song developed with the current unmistakable chorus chant, having Dave Gleeson as frontman and more.

John Brewster of The Angels fame is in the car with his son Harry when he joins us on Glam Chat. Brewster is a verifiable veteran of the music industry, having formed The Angels in Adelaide with his brother Rick some fifty years ago. The Angels, along with Cold Chisel, Paul Kelly, and Sia, have also recently been announced as one of the four world-renowned, South Australian artists to have a CBD laneway renamed in their honour. “We formed The Angels in Adelaide so it's really appropriate,” says Brewster, who seems deservedly chuffed with the announcement. John and his brother Rick are the longest standing members of The Angels, both having grown up with a passion for music, although their tastes differed. As of 2013, John's son, Sam Brewster, has played bass guitar in the band, and John's younger son, Harry, will be standing in for Rick at an upcoming New Year's Eve show. Since the inception of The Angels, the Brewsters have enjoyed an extensive touring life, accompanying the likes of ACDC and David Bowie. In fact, The Angels were selected as special guests on Bowie's first Australian tour. “He chose the band because he liked our music,” John says. When I ask if he has a standout memory from that particular tour, John is very sure of his answer. “David Bowie had a night off in Sydney, so we did our own show,” he says. “We had it jam packed with 1800 people … we started the first number and then we saw these people walking down … and they stood right in front of the band and it was David Bowie and his entire band. They stood and watched the whole show.” So, what's next for The Angels? “We're about 75 percent finished on a new album,” says John. Then, of course, there's the upcoming Red Hot Summer tour, which features four SA dates. The Angels will also be playing a sideshow at The Gov on Monday, January 10. I ask John if he has a favourite place to eat when he's in his hometown and he doesn't hesitate. “Godi La Vita,” he says. “They do the best gnocchi in Adelaide I think.” For tickets to the Red Hot Summer tour, see here.
