While living in New Jersey, Christian studied at multiple schools learning from the top instructors and trained with the highest level grappling athletes in the North East. In this episode of The Passing Shot, your tennis catch-up podcast, Joel & Kim look back on what has been a jam-packed last couple of weeks in the tennis season. On the WTA side, we discuss all the major events going on at the back-to-back Premiers in Doha and Dubai whilst on the ATP circuit we cover the 500s in Rotterdam and Rio as well as all the 250s in Europe and South America. Elsewhere, we have a look at what's been a very productive week for Dan Evans in Del Ray whilst we get our heads around the surprise split between Naomi Osaka and her coach Sascha Bajin, the current debate surrounding the newly reformed ITF World Tennis Tour and what records were broken at the New York Open (clue: it involves serving and John Isner).
This week on the Lucky Letcord Podcast Richard Pagliaro joins to talk about Naomi Osaka's stunning split with coach Sascha Bajin. He believes that the sky is not falling for the World No.1. We also discuss the impressive title run of Gael Monfils at Rotterdam while also making a point not to overlook the notable performances put in by Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori. We take a peek at the latin swing and admit that we are both mightily impressed by Marco Cecchinato's clay-court game. And we wonder how good American Reilly Opelka might become as we discuss his breakthrough title at the New York Open. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After a few weeks apart, David Law, Catherine Whitaker and Matt Roberts are back together on this week’s podcast, and the only place to start is Naomi Osaka’s split with Sascha Bajin. What could be the reasons behind it ? Should we have seen it coming? And how important is it that she’s prioritising her mental health over her on court success? On a similar theme, is Simona Halep on a mission to prove she can win big without a coach? Her trial period with Thierry Van Cleemput was unsuccessful, but she still reached the final in Doha. What makes her conqueror Elise Mertens such a brilliant player? Elsewhere, the biggest men’s results from the past fortnight are discussed. How good could New York Open champion Reilly Opelka become? What makes Stan Wawrinka’s return to form so uplifting? Will Gael Monfils kick on from his win in Rotterdam? And why should we be paying close attention to the form of Daniil Medvedev? The Tennis Podcast will be weekly throughout 2019 and daily at all the Grand Slam tournaments. It is produced in association with The Telegraph. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Welcome back tooo…. A month of February ATP Review Edition of Hey, Great Shot!! In part one of a two-part megapod, co-hosts Alex Gruskin and Max Rothman attempt to breakdown all of February’s action on the ATP Tour. The guys start with three-minute breakdowns of all of the non-North American tournaments, focusing on the best and worst performances in each event. They then take a deep dive into the inaugural New York Open, covering everything from the tournament’s choice to paint grey courts to the quality of play that occurred on those courts. Throughout the episode the guys focus on the play of the many #NextGenATP players on tour. They debate things such as the upside of Karen Khachanov, the progression of Frances Tiafoe, the emergence of Sebastian Korda, and so much more. Given the success of the young Americans in 2018, Gruskin also does his best to stump Rothman with a game of Jonathan Kelley-inspired tennis trivia. As always, the opinions in this podcast are our own, and we are happy to debate them with anyone kind enough to listen to or comment on our episode. The podcast feed is now live, so please share our episodes with your friends, and subscribe to our show on iTunes. Atos competitor Adam Bradley has been on a tear lately, with medals at Worlds, No Gi Worlds and Pans, and a double gold at the 2017 New York Open. He tells his story of leaving everything behind and moving across the country to follow his dream of making a life as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor.
We are in the midst of competition season, and Submission Only Raleigh from US Grappling gave us the chance to bring you lots of voices of local competitors. You'll hear from Eric DeVere, who lost 110 pounds doing jiujitsu and brought home two gold medals; Jordan Wise, who loves nogi; the participants in an hour-long match; and David Porter, who joins us live in studio to talk about the black belt division and tell epic stories of PokemonGoFest in Chicago, explaining how The Art of War applies there. We also hear from elite purple belt Junny Ocasio of Unity Jiujitsu, talking to Lourdes about the New York Open, superfight schedules and cheat meals. We usually have one long interview as our feature, but today we're going to do a series of shorter interviews, most with people you haven't heard from before on the podcast. A lot of those center around the fact that US Grappling Sub-Only Raleigh was yesterday -- and believe me, some amazing stories came out of that event. But Lourdes Cantu, rockstar co-host, also went on a jiujitsu road trip up the east coast recently, and managed to snag some quick interviews with a few luminaries: Dennis Asche, the founder of the Connection Rio BJJ Hostel, which spearheaded American jiujitsu travel to Brazil; Matt from Polaris Professional Jiujitsu, the competition organization putting on some of the best superfights going today; and Junny Ocasio, an elite purple belt competitor out of Unity Jiujitsu. You'll here from all of those folks on this show.
Daniel Sandlin earned his black belt this week: he joins us to explain how the Marine Corps martial arts program compares to training jiu-jitsu, what the black belt means to him, whether a sport jiujitsu practitioner is generally adept at self defense, and the story behind his promotion ceremony -- including the first emotions he felt upon receiving the belt, which may surprise you. He also shares with us his plans for his first black belt competition, his favorite rulesets, and more. Plus, learn the toughest people he's rolled with, gi or nogi. One of Daniel's earliest training partners was Josh Murdock, now a black belt also. We talk to Josh both *before* and *after* his first IBJJF tournament at black belt, the New York Open where he wins bronze. Thanks as always to our sponsors, US Grappling, Toro BJJ, and Cageside Fight Co.! BONUS episode! Two interviews with elite level competitors, including Norwegian #jiujitsu artist Ida Fløisvik, the reigning IBJJF New York Open black belt Absolute champion and Edwin "Junny" Ocasio of Unity BJJ, one of the best purple belt jiujitsu #athletes competing today. We're excited to bring you these interviews, and we're going to continue to focus on the Carolinas and beyond, bringing the best folks we can find on the show to support East Coast BJJ. Norwegian Ida Fløisvik is the reigning New York Open black belt Absolute champion, has a fascinating means to fund her training, and has an awesome Viking sword. The Roger Gracie black belt talked to Lourdes after training at Renzo Gracie Manhattan about her training, her kids classes, and much more! Edwin "Junny" Ocasio has won most of the IBJJF open tournaments and has his sights on a Mundial gold medal this year. He talked to Jeff about the importance of hard training, the importance of drilling, his training partners at Unity BJJ, and fighting for millimeters -- not inches -- in the gym and in competitions. He also gives his thoughts on cross-training, tells us about Unity's tough pro training and the toughest match he's had in competition -- as well as the best advice he's received from Murilo Santana. Also: we ask whether he'd be interested in a Toro Cup match, and ... well, just listen. Thanks as always to our sponsors, US Grappling, Toro BJJ, and Cageside Fight Co.!
