When Conor Niland was 16, he got the chance to hit with Serena Williams at Nick Bollettieri's famed tennis academy. Conor, the Irish junior number one, was feeling a bit homesick. Conor Niland knows what it's like when Roger Federer walks into the dressing room ('Ciao, bonjour, hello!'), and he has had the exquisitely terrible experience of facing Novak Djokovic in the world's biggest tennis stadium - while suffering from food poisoning. But he never reached the very top. He wrote a book: The Racket is the story of pro tennis's 99%: the players who roam the globe in hope of climbing the rankings and squeaking into the Grand Slam tournaments. It brings us into a world where a few dozen super-rich players - travelling with coaches and physios - share a stage with lonely touring pros whose earnings barely cover their expenses. Painting a vivid picture of the social dynamics on tour, the economics of the game, and the shadows cast by gambling and doping, The Racket is a witty and revealing underdog's memoir and a unique look inside a fascinating hidden world. How much would you pay to spend almost 90 minutes with a world-renowned performance psychologist (a pioneer in the field), researcher, New York Times best-selling author, C-suite coach, co-founder of the Human Performance Institute (HPI), co-founder of APeak Tennis, advisor and coach of Evolve Leadership? In this podcast episode, I had the privilege of talking with Dr. Jim Loehr as he reflected on his more than 30 years of vast experience and applied research designed to successfully leverage the science of energy management to improve the productivity and engagement of world-class performers in the areas of sport, business, medicine, and law enforcement. He shares what he believes is the most important factor in success, personal fulfillment, and life satisfaction. Dr. Loehr also discusses his recently co-authored book that he believes is “the most important book [he has] ever written” called Wise Decisions: A Science-Based Approach to Making Better Choices. Dr. Jim Loehr's parents were deeply religious, devout Catholics so his whole life was centered around religious teachings and beliefs. His sister became a nun, and his brother became a Jesuit priest out of high school and was in the Jesuits for seven years. Dr. Loehr explained that “there was no choice as to where I was going to go to school…I had to go to a school that [my parents] approved.” So, he attended Regis High School then Regis University. The only graduate school his parents would accept, while staying reasonably close to home, was the University of Northern Colorado. Therefore, Dr. Loehr received his BA in Psychology from Regis University, and an MA and EdD in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO. During our discussion, Dr. Loehr reflects on his academic and professional journey highlighting the experiences and people that impacted him and explains the events that led him to become a pioneer in the sport and performance psychology field. Throughout our discussion, he offers thoughtful and practical advice to those interested in the field. He shares a story in which he wrote a book called Mental Toughness Training for Sports and sent it to 19 major league publishers and got 19 rejections where they all said, “what the heck is mental toughness?” Dr. Loehr's father played professional baseball and read the book and said, “this makes sense…I'm going to go ahead and take a risk here” and he paid someone to produce the book and they sent it around to see what people thought of the book. The book became an underground bestseller and, all of a sudden, it was picked up by a major publisher and sold millions of copies all over the world. Dr. Loehr realized that the concept of mental toughness was so new and “because it was before its time, they thought it was absolute nonsense.” Resilience and toughness are needed when you are a pioneer and you are doing something different. Dr. Loehr shares some of the most significant experiences of his career, the ones that impacted him and his journey the most, including his experience as Chief Psychologist and Executive Director of the San Luis Valley Mental Health Corporation. We discuss how he founded The Center for Athletic Excellence in Denver, CO and his involvement as the Executive Director and Sport Psychologist at the Jimmy Connors United States Tennis Center. Dr. Loehr shares the story leading up to getting that position. Essentially, there was an ad for someone to run the Jimmy Connors United States Tennis Center in Sanibel Harbor, so he called Bob Davis and said, “I'll run all the facility for you, but I want to have access to Jimmy's brain. I want to be able to do videos and everything else. I want to see what makes that competitive brain work. I need to learn. So, he didn't check with Jimmy. He just said, ‘no, it's done. We'd love to have somebody with a Doctor of Psychology down here.'” He had such a reputation and following that many of the players at the Nick Bollettieri ...

He emphasized the importance of a support system for players, including foot care, laundry, and mental recovery. They discuss the challenges of parents wanting to be there with their kids and their parents coaches, and share their experience of coaching their son and daughter to college, balancing their roles as parents and coaches. Scott discusses his journey as a tennis coach and a parent, focusing on motor skills and introducing children to other sports. Scott emphasizes the importance of a parent's journey from the get-go, focusing on their children's development and interests. He suggests the student athlete pathway as a viable option for tennis players to go on to college, allowing them to pursue their passions while still living as a professional player as the cost to go pro without the educational route is now up to about $175,000 per year between coaching and travelling. They also discuss scouting before their children enter college, investing time and resources in their children's education, and maintaining healthy relationships with their children. He talks about the importance of adapting and adjusting to different coaching styles for different children, understanding and adapting to their unique needs and preferences and starting from the beginning, focusing on the student's development, playing tournaments, and setting a professional objective. They also discuss the dangers of setting an ultimate goal, potential injuries, and burnout, which can occur in sports, and suggest addressing burnout by focusing on specific activities or the child's passion for the sport. [From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2019] Legendary tennis coach and icon Nick Bollettieri sadly passed away in December 2022, but his impact on his students, coaches, and the entire tennis community will live on forever.   For this episode, I have resurrected my 2019 interview with Nick about how to achieve your dreams and help those around you reach their true potential. Nick had over 60 years of unrivaled experienced coaching the world's best tennis players. He founded the Bollettieri Tennis Academy, where he worked with such players as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, Jim Courier, Serena and Venus Williams, Mary Pierce, Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Marcelo Rios, Kei Nishikori, and Boris Becker, just to name a few. Nick also co-founded the nonprofit fitness camp, Camp Kaizen with his wife Cindi. He wrote for tennis magazine as an instruction editor and was featured in tv series and documentary films. Nick was also a very accomplished author, having written numerous books, including Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook, My Aces My Faults, and a recent Biography entitled Bollettieiri - Changing the Game. On top of all this, Nick was inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame and told me that he has been inducted into 12 others as well. On the show we cover the mindset you must have to achieve your goals, why every top performer has a great team behind that person, why you must get to know your students if you want to help them reach their true potential, Nick's exercise routine at 88 years old, and much more! I was playing more and more consistently in the second part of the year and I had the big run at the US Open and it feels great that all of the hard work is starting to pay off and I'm playing better and better tennis'. JANNIK SINNER ON THE UPS AND DOWNS OF TOUR LIFE - ‘It was a tough year for me because in many tournaments I had some little problems, I had to retire many times, but in another way in other tournaments I played many matches, played more consistent tennis with many quarter-finals and round of sixteens, so unfortunate, but in other ways I can be proud'.GRIGOR DIMITROV ON CONTINUING TO LEARN - ‘What I want is still to improve. I've done thirteen off seasons so I think I know the Ins and outs pretty good, but always like to re-assess and think what is our goal this time and maybe even try some new things'.REILLY OPELKA ON HIS MENTALITY - ‘My mentality I would say is analytical and that's how I've always been wired, but it's about finding the right balance and not being too analytical to where it becomes detrimental, but having a clear identity of who you are a tennis players I think is one of the most important things in the game'..MARIN CILIC ON STILL BEING ABLE TO PLAY AT THE TOP - ‘I would say that in general the tennis has not run away from me. It's just the feeling of putting everything together and generally when you watch tennis at a high level it seems quite simple and then you come to some stages where it become more difficult to put those things together, but for me I never doubted that I'd find playing good tennis'.DAN EVANS ON WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO TO TAKE THE NEXT STEPS - ‘I look at these tournaments differently to a lot of these top guys, I have to have a lot of things fall right, but reaching the Montreal semi-finals shows I can get to the latter stages of these tournaments if I do certain things and play the right tennis. I can improve and that's why we're on the practice courts each day and it's just about tinkering'.ANDY MURRAY ON TRYING TO FOCUS ON THE HERE AND NOW - ‘When you've been at the top of the game and got to number 1, that's always where your reference point is in terms of how you're doing, so in that respect it's been pretty average, but at the beginning of the year I was ranked 135 in the world and now I'm in the forties, so that's a big jump, so it's been ok the year'.And in the week where Nick Bollettieri passed away, we recall one of our favourite conversations with the visionary coach...NICK BOLLETTIERI ON THE MOST TALENTED PLAYER HE EVER COACHED - 'The student that was the most talented in my sixty years of teaching was Marcelo Rios. Had the best hands and feet, but he didn't appreciate the game, the players and didn't sign autographs for the children, it was sad. I think he was number one for two or three weeks'.PLUS MIOMIR KECMANOVIC IS THE FINAL PLAYER THIS YEAR TO TELL US HOW HE LIKES TO TRAVEL- Show presented by Seb Lauzier- Interviews by Lee Goodall, Ursin Caderas, Chris Bowers and Seb Lauzier- Opelka and Kecmanovic features by ATP Uncovered

As we celebrate and watch the 2022 French Open this week, we're truly excited to welcome 2004 French Open Mixed Doubles Champion from France, Tatiana Golovin to discuss her fascinating life & playing career. Tatiana was an instant fan favorite as she burst onto the scene as a 16yo Nick Bollettieri prodigy, and would ultimately be named the 2004 WTA Newcomer of the Year after a highly successful season. As she continued to skyrocket up the WTA rankings (reaching world #12), many considered her a strong contender for future grand slam titles, especially after defeating several former world #1's to win her first career title at the 2007 Amelia Island event. A freak back injury ultimately sidelined our champion, and she'd spend the next 11 long years wondering what could've been. And in a crazy turn of events, she would mount a highly publicized 2019 comeback that was not meant for grand slam glory, but for her own peace-of-mind and the dream of saying goodbye to tennis on her own terms. This is a fascinating interview with a player who seized an opportunity to do things her own way. I hope you'll join us this week in getting to know....the fantastic, Tatiana Golovin. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-guerrica/support

Emma Doyle interviews Nick during the Italian Coaches Conference Symposium where the Pope was the keynote speaker. It was one of the few times where there were more people to see the Pope that's Nick presentation!! He is cheeky and passionate and I'm so grateful for his support over the years. What does Nick think makes a great coach? "knowing your student." He shares a very honest moment about his worse coaching experience and the lessons that we can all learn as coaches. 'Keep your tips simple' according to Nick and he asked us all to reflect on the following question: "Are you willing to dedicate your life to your profession?" Thank you Nick for the laughs, teaching me to learn the look and for your sense of humour. Considered by many to be one of the best tennis coaches of all time. Nick Bollettieri has changed the way the game is played and taught at every level. He founded the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy - now IMG Academy - with a focus on intense physical training, total immersion and ongoing competition among the most talented players in the world. He has helped shape the careers of Andre Agassi, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Jim Courier, Boris Becker, Monica Seles, Anna Kournikova, Tommy Haas, and other tennis champions. Thanks so much for tuning in to the show. Today, like every day on the show, is special because I get to talk with someone who Anne White, elite pro tennis player, movie producer, etc., has made an impact in the tennis world on many levels: on court, in the media and in education. Anne and started playing tennis at just five years old and by the time she was nine years old she was #29 in the U.S. in the 12’s. At 14 Anne did not have a coach during the winter and was only able to practice indoors 3 hours a week. Nick Bollettieri watched her play in the National 16’s and offered her a scholarship to train in Florida at what is now the infamous IMG Academy. After two and a half years in Bradenton, FL, she then went on to college at USC where she played #2 as a freshman. Anne finished the year as an undefeated All American and USC won the National Championship. Anne also won 3 USTA gold balls in one day at The U.S. Amateur Clay Courts in Pittsburgh, PA, winning the singles, doubles and mixed doubles. In 1987, after two years at USC, Anne turned pro and played eight years on the circuit reaching #19 in the world in singles and #9 in the world in doubles. She won one singles title and eight doubles titles with six different partners, including Chris Evert. Following her WTA career, Anne has been involved in a broad array of endeavors including color commentary for professional tennis tournaments and in addition to her directing tennis at the Beverly Hills Tennis Club she produced a feature documentary about Bollettieri for SHOWTIME, “Love Means Zero“ and co-producing a new online interactive reading platform called REED (Read, Experience, Explore and Dream).

On today's show, I spoke with footwork expert Dave Bailey about how we can improve our movement on the court. Dave is the creator of the Bailey Tennis Footwork Method, used by top professionals all the way down to the amateur level. Dave has worked with over 21 Grand Slam Players, including Monica Seles, Jarmilla Gajdosova, Zang Shaui, Jelena Dokic, Bethanie Mattek, Anne Kethavong, Misaki Doe, Irina Falconi, and Vince Spadea. Dave has spent over 30 years studying and researching the steps and movements of the top tennis professionals. Clearly, he really knows his stuff about footwork. After his intensive study of the best players in the world, Dave created the Bailey Tennis Footwork Method, which is arguably the most advanced and comprehensive tennis footwork training program in the world today. Dave was a real pleasure to speak with, and I hope to someday take him up on his offer of doing scissor kick smashes in the sand dunes of Sydney, Australia. I'll try not to puke though :) Many thanks to Dave for the fantastic tips and information on how we can all level up our tennis footwork. And if you can only remember one thing that Dave said (originally from Nick Bollettieri), remember this: "it's footwork, not footwalk." I hope you enjoy this episode and let us know what you think in the comments below! BACKGROUND Today we will be talking with a Tennis Athlete, more of them to come in the near future. We will discuss how the will to be great is bigger than just talent alone and how important it is to give 100% effort without the fear of failure. Dino will share with us some of the challenges that came his way and how he handled them. He explains how helpful psychologists, coaches, and trainers are great people to have on your team and in your corner through the tough times of being an athlete, they are there to help you get better in every aspect. Was the highest recruited international player in 2009. After one year of college, he got to the semi finals of the indoor championships and the quarter finals of the NCAA finals. Share this with one person you think could benefit the most…} MOST GRATEFUL TODAY FOR: The respect he receives from other players around the world PERSONAL QUOTE: “The will of the man ain’t the skill of the man” Biggest Mentors in Life and Sport: Goran Prpić, Nick Bollettieri, Roger Federer, Paul Annacone, Boris Becker Key Discussion Points: What was one of your biggest struggles or failures? Was there a psychological change that lead up to a path that seemed to go downhill? Is there a match you remember where you made a key mistake that was a result of fear? What was your biggest “light-bulb” moment? Why did you choose to go to school in the US? What are the differences between tennis in Croatia and your experiences in the US? What is the statistic for an average amount of playing years for a Pro in Tennis? What has you most excited these days in terms of projects, goals, etc? Key Lessons: We can’t just rely on our talents, we need to have the will to put forth the effort A failure/loss doesn’t have to take a huge mental toll on your career “At the end of the day you realize that the most important things in the world are not playing the US Open or being 290 or 250, as long as you stay healthy and as long as you make your life easy and you stay happy, a failure can be a really small part of your career.” DM @ 14:18 Focus more on the process, and results will eventually follow After a failure, try to get up and move forward right away Avoid the fear of failure and always give your 100% full effort “When I started working with some sport psychologists, we realized that there was actually a fear of failing and giving a 100% of yourself and then by working with them and started competing 100% stop caring about the outcome...I started focussing on the progress and not about the outcome.” DM @ 17:05 Get as many people in your corner as possible, because all advice could be helpful When you find something that you’re good at, that you enjoy, pursue it, see where it can take you Give yourself the right amount of time to transition into your professional career “To the young players out there, if you are not 100% sure that you have the right things to make it fast and not sure that you can be top 100 in the next year, go to college take 1, 2, or 3 years off, it’s a great transition from Juniors to Pro’s, that’s why I attended Ohio State University.” DM @ 23:48 The United States gives you the opportunity to compete at a high level and receive a good education at the same time. As a tennis player, once your career is finished, there are many job opportunities. DINO’S TIP JAR What’s the best advice that you have ever received? When nothing goes well focus on footwork and watching the ball What’s one of the first things you do when you arrive at a new arena to play? I hit 20 minutes down the middle What personal habit do you have that you believe contributes most to your success? Hard Work; getting up at 7 am in the off season, 2 sessions of 2 hours and 1.5 hour more in the gym, watching what you eat, taking protein shakes, and when you get to the tournament, spending 4-5 hours a day in the club, thinking about your matches, preparing yourself, it takes a lot of time OFF the court as well as ON the court Sleep & Morning ritual: I have to get at least 8 hours of sleep, I take quick and easy breakfast (cereal/yogurt), pack my stuff, leave the house, and I show up for practice at 10am, that is when I work the best. What is one way that you’d like to improve as a person? I would like to be more clean and organized (apartment). I would like to take my sport discipline and apply it to my personal life. How do you feel that playing other sports, soccer and golf, help you with tennis? Soccer helps me with my lungs, when I get back on the tennis court, I can’t afford to lose breath, and golf relaxes me and gets me into a quiet place where I can really work on my well being. What book would you give away as a gift and why? If it’s a tennis player, I would give the book of Brad Gilbert, Winning Ugly, it can teach you so much about tennis and competing in sports in general, But if its someone else, An Autobiography of Muhammad Ali and Mutant Message Down Under How do you like to improve athletes and add value to their lives? I’ve helped three younger tennis players, I also gave away 20 shirts and 20 shorts to a young player from Rijeka and seeing his reaction and how proud he was made me feel happy. I stay in contact with these young players and give them someone to look up to and give them advice on the game and what tournaments to sign up for. If you had a redo, and had all of the resources you have now, what would have done differently to reach success? I would definitely have had less moments of desperation, depression, and uncertainty, more self esteem and more self respect as a player.
