Kathryn interviews Author, Professor Brian Buma PhD.Climate change, shrinking wildlife habitats, rising sea levels, and vanishing species. These are big, important ideas that deserve a proper exploration. National Geographic Explorer Brian Buma PhD lucidly pairs the science of climate change with maps, infographics, and charts that make the complex information not only comprehensible, but compelling. This approach illustrates multifaceted ecological change with scientific clarity and aesthetic appeal in equal measure. Nature itself charts the course, with chapters devoted to atmosphere, water, land, wildlife, and urban ecology. Buma tells a larger story about what drives environmental change, outlining the historical developments behind each topic and detailing their current state and possible future. Take this incredible journey and be inspired to act as an environmental steward in your everyday life. Sam “speaking”. Here it is. The typically bloated, typically belated and atypically... tinted 54th episode of the FF podcast. The question I have for Norman E. Rosenthal et al. is... was it decided first that the acronym would be "SAD", the constituent terms retrospectively conceived? Or was the end result a quirk of fate? I'll concede that very little contortion or contrivance would have been required - as labels go, it's quite spot on. But still... I'm reluctant to believe that there wasn't SOME finagling. They knew it would end with "Disorder" and then someone chirped up with "Season" or "Seasonal". Find a cheeky and appropriate "A" and hey, presto, you've got "SAD". Anyway, yeah, these darker days are rotten, aren't they? Once, I loved them. As a child and as a moody teenager. Now I crave the light like a goddamn normie. It WAS Halloweeeeeeen. Now it is not. In fact, it's Bonfire Night on this day of release. But Bonfire Night doesn't lend itself so readily to "theme". But let me bend over backwards to find some parallel. Umm... an essential element of B. Night is the confusion over what we're supposed to be commemorating. We "celebrate" Guy Fawkes, right? Hang on, was trying to blow up Parliament a good thing? Were Parliament the baddies? It's like V for Vendetta in the old days, isn't it? No, wait, it's what the plotters failed to do, right? It's like a big relief party? How British. To honour failure. And in such a meaninglessly loud fashion. So what's the analogy to the podcast..? Confusion over why we're bothering, I suppose. Or that to listen is, in its own way, to honour failure. For the spooky celebration(?) of recent yore, one need only slap on a darker filter and scavenge for anything vaguely horror-adjacent. Midnight Mass was a serendipitous bit of scheduling. M. Night Shyamalan's Old could be hemmed in too, just about, if one was feeling generous. But how often is that? The rest is business as usual. Bit of Doctor Who, bit of bemoaning the state of popular culture, bit of Jordan being loco. Come on. Give us a listen. Terrify yourself as bangs echo around you, the soundtrack to your inner collapse. It is our pleasure.

Adversity is an irreducible fact of life. Although we can and should learn from all experiences, both positive and negative, bestselling author Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal, believes that adversity is by far the best teacher most of us will ever encounter.Whether the adversity one experiences is the result of poor decision-making, a desire to test one’s mettle, or plain bad luck, Rosenthal believes life’s most important lessons—from the value of family to the importance of occasionally cutting corners—can be best learned from it.Running counter to society’s current prevailing message that “excellence” must always be aspired to, and failure or mistakes of any sort are to be avoided at all costs, Rosenthal shows that engaging with our own failures and defeats is one of the only ways we are able to live authentic and meaningful lives, and that each different type of adversity carries its own challenges and has the potential to yield its own form of wisdom. Using stories from his own life—including his childhood in apartheid-era South Africa, his years after suffering a violent attack from a stranger, and his career as a psychiatrist—as well as case studies and discussions with well-known figures like Viktor Frankl and David Lynch, Rosenthal shows that true innovation, emotional resilience, wisdom, and dignity can only come from confronting and understanding the adversity we have experienced. Even when life is hardest, there are meanings to be found, riches to be harvested, and gifts that can last a lifetime. Rosenthal illustrates his message through a series of compact, memorable chapters, each one drawn from episodes in the lives of his patients, colleagues, or himself, and concluded with a take-away maxim on the lesson learned.
Dr. John Hagelin is a Harvard-trained quantum physicist, life-long educator and inventor and leading researcher on higher states of consciousness. He is the recipient of the prestigious Kilby award in physics, and is renowned for developing a highly successful grand unified field theory based on the Superstring. He is currently President, Maharishi University of Management and the Director of Maharishi University of Management’s Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy. A physicist by training, Hagelin was a researcher at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in the early 1980s. Hagelin stood as a candidate for President of the United States for the Natural Law Party. H Dr. Hagelin has been published extensively in the area of supersymmetric unified quantum field. He has appeared many times on news shows such as ABC’s Nightline, NBC’s Meet the Press and in major metropolitan newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. He is International Director of the Global Union of Scientists for Peace. Contact Info Email: President@mum.edu Most Influential Person Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Effect on Emotions Emotions are generally more joyful. A lot of the negative emotions of anxiety and depression are stress driven, so if you have a powerful stress buster, and meditation generally is meant to be a stressful. Remember, mindfulness based stress reduction is meant to be a stress buster. The very, very deep rest that comes with tm is an even more powerful stress buster. That completely changes the complexion of one's emotions. So also because meditation takes your awareness deep to very fine, fine levels of feeling one's emotions, tend to get more deeply appreciated. They become richer. You start to feel more like a fine artist who has a very deep kind of feeling for things. I didn't have that kind of refinement growing up. So that's a nice side effect of meditation. Thoughts on Breathing That's very interesting. In the TM technique, you don't really worry about your breath. You just follow the mind as it flows into this state of deep silence and inner unboundedness and your breath goes with it in the sense that as the mind gets deeply rested and settled, the breath gets deeply rested and settled. In the meditative state, the deepest points of meditation, I'd swear I wasn't breathing. Now, if you really pay attention to it, you'll notice that there is a puff of breath coming up the nose and a just a puff of breath coming out, but it doesn't even really get past your head and you're living on that. The requirement for oxygen goes way down. When the body is deeply rested and the cells inside the body aren't burning as much oxygen, aren't burning as much fuel. So a very deep state of rest will soften the breath and my breath is soft even an activity as a consequence of that regular practice. Suggested Resources Book: Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth Book: Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation by Norman E. Rosenthal Bullying Story I don't think I've been myself participating in bullying activity. I tend to always stand up for the underdog, whoever might be getting bullied to within the limits of my own strength and of course as a younger person, I was as vulnerable as anybody and I didn't have as much strength as I would've wanted to stand up more forcefully for people who were being misused. But as a physicist who is willing to talk about consciousness and is dedicated to researching consciousness, that makes me a little bit of an outlier in the physics community because physical scientists don't talk about consciousness. It's like, real men don't do ballet because for a physicist, we study the physical world, we're meat and potatoes people. If we can see it, we can touch it, we can taste it, it's real. This consciousness stuff, what is that, the tooth fairy, Santa Claus? It's a crazy point of view because physicists have consciousness. They should recognize that they are conscious and since consciousness doesn't exist within their physical equations, they tend to dismiss it as something that's not real. Actually, if they take their study of physics more deeply, they will discover that consciousness does fit into their physical equations. That is the very source of physics and every discipline for that matter, but be that as it may, having been a bit of an outlier, willing to talk about conscience, that there are plenty of physicists who have dismissed me. In fact, when I went from Stanford University Faculty to Maharishi University Faculty in 1983, people wrote me off. They thought that was kind of obviously going to be the end of me. It wasn't. I mean that was really the start of my fruitful research in physics and I had developed a doctoral program and got a national science foundation grant to do research in unified field theory. So my physics was fine, but even then, even though my physics was demonstrably better than it had been. I still, I think I probably was considered to be odd because I was into consciousness, into meditation and so forth. So definitely you can tell when you're at a social event or conference involving other physicists, you know, physicists can take an attitude towards you and they certainly did to me. I certainly felt that at times patronizing and so forth. So if you took that stuff seriously and it was certainly tempting for me at times, you know, to react to it, you know, to, to push back in a way that might not be productive, you know, get into an argument or toss an insult back to the other person. But, by about that time in my life, you know, I had been meditating for quite some years and I didn't find myself overthrown by it. I found the whole thing actually a little humorous. I was able to just smile quietly as all this was going on because it was going on. I know it was going on. I wasn't always invited to give the keynote speeches at conferences. Even if I did the keynote research behind it, you know, just a little bit of a second class treatment. It was as though I were an African American in the deep South 40 years ago. You just don't get the same treatment. I mean, you know, it just wasn't the nature of the culture at the time. And I felt a little bit like that. Anyway, yes, being grounded in yourself is really so key. It's really important to be in the driver's seat in the sense that you're not reactive because if you're reactive, if you're defensive, it's hard to know what you're going to say, but it's probably not going to serve you. Right? So being grounded in yourself, your big self, your inner silence, unshakably so. And that's something that's developed over years and years. That's a great antidote to overreacting and from ever getting thrown off of your feet. Relax and Breathe Summit Join me, Bruce Langford, on the Relax and Breathe Summit. Hello, I am your host Aun Abdi and welcome to the monthly One Minute Book Review podcast, where I break down in more detail the books that I have read and reviewed in the previous month. In this months episode, I will be discussing Supermind: How To Boost Performance and Live A Richer and Happier Life Through Transcendental Meditation by Norman E. Rosenthal, The TB12 Method by Tom Brady, 12 Rules For Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B.Peterson, Crushing It by Gary Vaynerchuck, The Martian by Andy Weir and Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oneminutebookreview/message
Super Mind: How to Boost Performance and Live a Richer and Happier Life Through Transcendental Meditation. Rosenthal explains how we can improve our state of mind by practising TM placing us into a super-mind state of consciousness. This book confused me. I was expecting a 'how to' into how I can perform TM and implement it into my life. Rosenthal during the book explains all the life-changing aspects that TM has but without actually revealing how the reader can achieve it. The author recommends to sign-up for a TM practitioner, however many of us want an introduction before committing long-term. There is little space dedicated to how we can approach learning TM individually, which surprises me. The way it was written left little to the imagination as well as it contained, name-dropping mostly and examples of how TM is life-changing. I don't doubt this, but I was expecting a lot more from this book. I rate it two stars. OMBR --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oneminutebookreview/message
"The personal growth continues to unfold in terms of success and synchronistic good luck accompanied by inner happiness and peace. It feel like the perfect antidote for the craziness that's all around us." ~Dr. Norman Rosenthal As many familiar with the '60s, the Beatles, and TM founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi may recall, people practiced TM for more than just health benefits. They sought (and many achieved) an expanded state of consciousness that enabled them to excel in their careers and relationships, and become "Super Performers." In his New York Times bestselling book, Transcendence, today's special guest, Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D. show that, far from being a fad from the past, Transcendental Meditation is a timely tool for overcoming stress--even severe PTSD--and enriching all areas of life. In his new book, Super Mind: How to Boost Performance and Live a Richer and Happier Life through Transcendental Meditation, Dr. Rosenthal weaves the latest clinical research together with the results of over 600 personal accounts to define the SUPER MIND state achieved by meditators through their regular practice. Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D. is a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School and a bestselling author. He was the first psychiatrist to describe and diagnose Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). His current work studying the effects of botulinum toxin as a treatment for depression has earned him national attention in the media and in the world of psychology. Rosenthal has SAD himself and talks about his experiences with the disorder. He talks a bit about the signs/symptoms of SAD versus when you have the “winter blues.” When meditating, you get fluxes of alpha waves, especially in the frontal areas of the brain, that are soothing. Rosenthal talks about brain coherence, which means different parts of the brain experience the same wavelengths at the same time. This is associated with the brain collaborating and being more efficient. He explains the difference between mindfulness and medita Kari talks about the “Jon Kabat-Zinn” way of meditation and Deepak Chopra and Oprah's meditation class. Kari talks about mindfulness stress-based reduction training. Transcendental meditation can help in the following ways: connecting body and mind, building a better brain, being in the zone, having internal growth, asking yourself, “Who do I want to be?”, being engaged with relationships or work, accepting losses, and so on. Rosenthal points out two particular chapters: Meditate and Grow Rich and Meditate and Grow Happy. Erica offers tips for getting off the couch and starting ru Kari mentions “The Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, And Rebel: Our Four Tendencies” (Episode 120). Serena Marie, RD Serena Marie, RD, talks about the nutritional benefits of eating potato skins (no, not the appetizer!). The benefit to eating potato skins is the fiber that they contain. They are mostly a source of insoluble fiber. Serena reviews the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber. She also defines what a “standard American diet” looks like. When transitioning from a standard American diet to a more nutrient-rich diet, many people have issues increasing their fiber intake. As you increase vegetables, steam them or chop them up finely to break down the cellulose/fiber to help digest them with less intolerance. Gratitude Jar (Woot! Woot!) Kari is grateful for is a new product at Trader Joe's called parsnip chips. They are so good that they might be a trigger food, but thankfully they only have a few ingredients!
