Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD has today attended a signing ceremony at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) headquarters to agree Ireland's Associate Membership of the organisation. The Minister's signature signals Ireland's commitment to join the world-leading research organisation and marks an important step in the process of joining. Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Lawless said: "I am delighted to have signed this Associate Membership Agreement with CERN. This represents the culmination of significant work by the Government and CERN, building on the excellence of the Irish physics community. "As an associate member of one of the world's most significant research organisations, Ireland will have an opportunity to gain access to excellent research, innovation, collaboration and industry contracts. "This long-term international commitment to our scientific community will demonstrate the Irish Government's continued and expanding support of Ireland's participation in leading global research collaborations. "I look forward to working with my colleagues in Government and stakeholders over the coming period to finalise Ireland's associate membership status and maximise the opportunities presented by the process." Associate membership of CERN will bring benefits to Ireland across research, industry, skills, science outreach and international relations. It will open doors for Ireland's researchers to participate in CERN's scientific programmes and will make Irish citizens eligible for staff positions and fellowships at CERN. It will also be possible for Irish citizens to access CERN's formal training schemes and develop skills in industry-relevant areas such as electronics, photonics, materials, energy systems and software. Membership will also allow Ireland's enterprises to compete in CERN procurement programmes. Much of CERN's instrumentation and equipment requires the development or exploitation of novel technologies, which spurs enterprise innovation. Many of these technologies have applications in other spheres such as medicine, space, energy and ICT. Today's signing ceremony was opened by the Director of International Relations at CERN, Ms Charlotte Lindberg Warakaulle, followed by some words welcoming Ireland's membership of the organisation from the Director-General of CERN, Dr Fabiola Gianotti. Minister Lawless then signed the Associate Membership Agreement on behalf of Ireland, and Dr Gianotti signed on behalf of CERN. Minister Lawless also had the opportunity to visit the ISOLDE facility, a key experimental infrastructure supporting fundamental research in particle physics and radiobiology. Ireland applied for Associate Membership of CERN in November 2023. Subject to funding requirements and Dáil approval, it is expected that Ireland will complete the accession process this year. In this interview, I'm joined by two leading thinkers who are helping to reshape our understanding of consciousness, the nature of reality, and the pursuit of meaning in life: Dr Iain McGilchrist and Dr Bernardo Kastrup. Iain is a neuroscientist, psychiatrist, author, and philosopher perhaps most well known for his Hemispheric Hypothesis and his books: The Master and his Emissary and The Matter with Things. Bernardo is an author, scientist, philosopher, and the Director of the Essentia Foundation. He holds two PhDs - one in philosophy and the other in engineering. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. In this conversation, we explore: — Their views on what consciousness is, the common ground in their thinking, and the differences — The extent to Iain and Bernardo believe we live in a purposeful and intelligent universe, and their perspectives on the question of God — Why they both consider truth to be the most important thing in life — Where they see human life fitting into the larger whole and what case can be made that each of our individual subjective experiences do matter. I hope you get as much from this fascinating discussion as I did from recording it. You can learn more about Iain's work at https://channelmcgilchrist.com, and Bernardo's at https://www.bernardokastrup.com. -- Dr Iain McGilchrist is a Psychiatrist and Writer. He is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context, that of the whole of our physical and spiritual existence, and of the wider human culture in which they arise – the culture which helps to mould, and in turn is moulded by, our minds and brains. He was formerly a Consultant Psychiatrist of the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley NHS Trust in London, where he was Clinical Director of their southern sector Acute Mental Health Services. Dr McGilchrist has published original research and contributed chapters to books on a wide range of subjects, as well as original articles in papers and journals, including the British Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Telegraph and The Sunday Times. He has taken part in many radio and TV programmes, documentaries, and numerous podcasts, and interviews on YouTube, among them dialogues with Jordan Peterson, David Fuller of Rebel Wisdom, and philosopher Tim Freke. His books include Against Criticism, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, The Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning, and Ways of Attending. He published his latest book: The Matter With Things, a book of epistemology and metaphysics. You can keep up to date with his work at https://channelmcgilchrist.com. Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the ‘Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on Scientific American, the Institute of Art and Ideas, the Blog of the American Philosophical Association and Big Think, among others. In this dialogue, Prof Christo Doherty, the Chair of Research in the Wits School of Arts, speaks Ale de la Puente, an independent artist-researcher from Mexico who is doing a residency in Johannesburg as part of the Goethe Institute's international Studio Quantum programme. Ale has studied industrial design, goldsmithing, boatbuilding, navigation, astronomy, physics, and philosophy. She is known for her poetic and conceptual explorations of time and space across a wide field of mediums, ranging from installations and sculptures to drawings, photography, and video, including art science expeditions in search of symbolic natural phenomena, how we signify them, and how, very importantly, we relate to the given meanings in art and life. Ale is a fellow of the National System of Arts Creators in Mexico. She has exhibited her work both nationally in a wide range of international galleries from the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico to the Polytechnic Museum (Moscow) and the Bass Museum of Art, in Miami, Florida to name but a few. Her work is part of leading public and private collections. Ale first developed art-science projects in collaboration with the Astronomy Institute and Nuclear Science Institute of National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, going on to work with the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California, the Roscosmos in Russia, and the Kosmica Institute in Berlin and Mexico City. Amongst her many collaborations with scientists are the projects "Desire", "Matters of Gravity" and "Finding the Centre" which we will discuss in this podcast, as well as the project she is beginning in Johannesburg as part of the Goethe Institut's Studio Quantum initiative - an international events and artist-in-residence programme which is exploring emerging quantum technologies through the lens of art. In this podcast we discuss how Ale came to art practice, beginning with her accidental discovery of Industrial Design and her first art-science collaborations with the Institute of Astronomy at the National Autonomous University of Mexica. We then unpack what went into the public space art-intervention she called "Desire" where , working with artisan firework craftsmen, she built an artificial comet that flew in the evening sky above Mexico City in 2016. We explore how she navigates the challenges as an artist engaging with the scientific lab through her experience of working at the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) where she has had two residencies, We then look at her collaborative project with 6 other artists called Matters of Gravity (2012-14), where they elaborated the different implications of zero gravity using the facilities at Star City in the Yuri Gagarin Cosmosnaut Training Centre outside Moscow. Finally we discuss the lessons that Ale has drawn from her extensive engagement with scientists working in a wide variety of disciplines and how she is going about her work on her project, entitled "Is it going to rain" with the Quantum Studio project in Johannesburg. Useful links to Ale's project website and other information and can be found in the show notes for this podcast. In today's episode, I had the absolute honor of speaking with one of my personal intellectual heroes, Bernardo Kastrup. Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of the Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (with a focus in ontology and philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (with a focus in reconfigurable computing and artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). He has also had a 25-year career in high-technology, having co-founded parallel processing company Silicon Hive (which was acquired by Intel in 2011). Bernardo Kastrup is also the author of 11 books. I basically have an entire Kastrup shelf inmy office. His book, “Meaning In Absurdity: What Bizarre Phenomena Can Tell Us About the Nature of Reality” is, in my opinion, one of the most important books written on the UFO phenomenon. I can't recommend it highly enough. Just a heads up before we begin—if you aren't familiar with Kastrup's thinking on analytic idealism, the first part of this interview might be a little challenging. If you stick it out, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how elegantly analytic idealism deals with some of the more mysterious aspects of the anomalous phenomena. If you'd like to learn more about analytic idealism, there are some great resources and videos that can walk you through it step-by-step. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD has today secured Government approval to submit Ireland's formal application to join the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) as an Associate Member. CERN is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Ireland to join CERN Speaking at Government Buildings today, Minister Harris said: "This is a development that has been, for decades, eagerly awaited by our academic community and I would like to thank them for their assistance in bringing us to this milestone in Irish science and in preparing Ireland's formal application. "I am so pleased we have reached this milestone moment. CERN will consider the application in mid-December. I really want to thank my Department officials for all of their work. We are on the cusp of something significant." Membership of CERN can be expected to bring benefits to Ireland across research, industry, skills, science outreach, and international relations. It will open doors for Ireland's researchers to participate in CERN's scientific programmes and will make Irish citizens eligible for staff positions and fellowships at CERN. With CERN membership, Irish citizens will gain access to CERN's formal training schemes. These include masters and PhD programmes, apprenticeships, a graduate engineering training scheme, internships for computer scientists and engineers, and technical training experience. These skills will be developed far beyond what is possible in Ireland and are in industry-relevant areas such as electronics, photonics, materials, energy systems and software. Minister Harris added: "My Department will continue to work closely with CERN, in order to expedite the application process and we hope that Ireland's membership can commence in late 2024. We will continue to work with the academic community to make the necessary preparations for the Irish researchers to participate effectively at CERN from day one of Irish membership." It is hoped that CERN Council may be in a position to agree this December to send a fact-finding Task Force to Ireland in March 2024 to carry out their formal assessment. The Department will then formally establish the National Advisory Committee on CERN to prepare for membership and to coordinate with CERN's fact-finding Task Force. The Task Force will submit a report on Ireland's suitability for Associate Membership to the Director-General and the President of the CERN Council. In June 2024, the CERN Council may take a final vote on whether to admit Ireland as an Associate Member. Notes to editors CERN is an intergovernmental organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. CERN is the leading global collaboration investigating the fundamental composition of matter. It was established in 1954 and straddles the Franco-Swiss border, just outside Geneva. CERN currently has 23 Member States (including most of the EU Member States) and has co-operation agreements with over 40 other states. The main focus of activity in CERN is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This is an underground ring which is 27km in circumference in which protons, one of the constituent particles of an atom, are accelerated to 99.9999991% of the speed of light and collided into one another. The Large Hadron Collider was used to discover the Higgs boson in 2012. CERN also plays a leading role in promoting and organising international cooperation in scientific research The CERN Convention specifically stipulates that CERN "shall have no concern with work for military requirements and the results of...

The secrets are yours… if you act now.BioYou might expect to learn of my advanced degrees in theoretical physics. Or how I'm an expert in geospatial relativity and high-energy particles here. I could present my honorary tenure with European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). As long as I did all of that with my tongue in cheek, you'd likely realize I was having my way with word-smithing the fantastic. You see, I'm a novelist. Rather than having an academic history in the Sciences, I started with a graphic design degree. Yeah. That was me doodling up the cover and several illustrations within. I parlayed that into a television production career. Over the course of the last twenty years, I advanced into animation, scripting, and then as a Producer/Director way out in the middle of the Pacific. Physics has held a fascination for me. During college, I had enjoyed several “topics in physics” elective classes. They didn't relate to my degree in the least, but engaged a distinctive side of the brain all the same. I felt my intellectual draw could bridge a divide between their cerebral academic world and the one we everyday folk sip Starbucks in. Not to mention, if Neil deGrasse Tyson isn't inclined to step up, then I'm happy fill that vacuum. We are laypeople. And if I can unravel these heady concepts into the realm of what's possible, then that has value for all of us. Does that make me a UFOlogist? Yes, and no. A UFOlogist is pretty much anyone who studies the topic and shares their research. Just like journalists, there isn't a UFOlogy certification. On top of that, those that seek to foster the stigma are more than pleased to slather pseudoscience over the term. In that respect, I'd not consider myself any sort of ‘ologist, more of a layperson translator. I'm seeking to advance understanding. At the same time I'd like to push back against the disinformation that overwhelms the topic. As a first time non-fiction author, I'm curious to see if this guidebook will spark something. This week I'm talking to G. O. Turner about his book 'UFO Science: Secret New Physics, Vehicles, & UAP'.What Physics are Driving UAP in our Atmosphere? The truth may not be as hard to understand as you think! Are you ready to explore the latest theories and evidence behind these incredible craft? Then this book is for you! Uncover the secrets of alien reproduction vehicles, declassified Pentagon incidents, and much more. With this UFO guidebook, you'll have a compendium of emerging physics and a deeper understanding of our place in the universe.• Gain a comprehensive overview of the current state of UFO physics• Learn mind-bending theories from scientists like Salvatore Pais, Jack Sarfatti, and Bob Lazar• Explore case studies built around declassified Pentagon incidents• Discover the implications of these mysteries for our place within the universeDon't miss out on this fascinating UFO Science compendium. CERN inaugurates new Science Gateway, a bridge to the outside world

The Geneva-area lab that houses the world's largest atom smasher, known as CERN, has inaugurated a new “Science Gateway” that hopes to make its complex inner workings and the science that drives it comprehensible—and inspiring—to everyone aged 5 and above. Chiefs at the European Organization for Nuclear Research—CERN's official name—say improvements were needed to better welcome the tens of thousands of tourists who flock to its entrance every year near the French-Swiss border. So, they called in famed architect Renzo Piano, a friend of and fellow Italian to CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, to design the structure. “With the Science Gateway, we want to expand the opportunities for scientific education that we offer to the public,” explains Gianotti. Entry will be free, and opening times run from Monday through Saturday. One major goal, Gianotti says, was “to infuse everyone who comes here with curiosity and a passion for science and inspire young people to take up careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” Before, CERN welcomed 150,000 tourists a year—but the “Science Gateway” will balloon capacity to 500,000, says Gianotti. Teenage guides showcase the science behind glitzy, light-infused displays during inauguration day festivities. Drawn to the project, Piano visited the site first. “So, I came to CERN, I went around, down in the large collider. I talked to people, I talked to scientists, and then (it) became clear that those people needed a bridge: a real one, but also a metaphorical one, connecting the world of a scientist with the outside world.” Piano says he was “touched” by the “incredible” work of CERN scientists exploring everything from the tiniest atomic particles to the Big Bang, which helps to understand “that the Planet Earth is a little spaceship on which we are, all of us, embarked.” The “Science Gateway” center is powered by solar panels and is nestled in a wooded area. It features a transparent glass design and a bridge—to symbolize openness and links to the big and the small in science. It houses laboratories, exhibition areas, and an auditorium. He is currently President of The Origins Project Foundation, and host of The Origins Podcast. In this episode Professor Krauss discusses his 10th and most recent book: The Edge of Knowledge: Unsolved Mysteries of the Cosmos. The book challenges readers to explore the limits of what we know, and possibly what is even knowable! Can science ever explain the mysteries of time, space, matter, the origin of life, and the nature of consciousness? Lawrence addresses these challenges head on while also celebrating how far we have come in understanding the universe. Professor Krauss reminds us tha not knowing implies a universe of opportunities with the possibility of discovery and surprise.  In the episode Dr. Krauss has much to say about the risks of AI, astrobiology, the pursuit of a theory of everything, and where science can take us. He reveals his motivations for writing this latest book, and his deep concerns for the current state of academic freedom.  As an accomplished scientist with over 500 publications, Lawrence Krauss has focused on the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, including the origin and evolution of the Universe and the fundamental structure of matter. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 I'll propose an idealist ontology more parsimonious and empirically rigorous than mainstream physicalism, bottom-up panpsychism, and cosmopsychism. The ontology also offers more explanatory power than these three alternatives, in that it does not fall prey to the hard problem of consciousness, the combination problem, or the decomposition problem, respectively. It can be summarized as follows: there is only universal consciousness. We, as well as all other living organisms, are but dissociated alters of universal consciousness, surrounded by its mental activity. The inanimate world we see around us is the extrinsic appearance of this activity. The living organisms we share the world with are the extrinsic appearances of other dissociated alters. --- Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. What are the implications of Jung's theories about the Collective Unconscious, Archetypes, Synchronicity and Individuation? What can they suggest about the nature of reality and the anomalies of modern science? In this episode we have the fascinating topic of the metaphysics implied by Carl Jung's theories to discuss. Jung is one of the great hero's of this podcast, we covered the collective unconscious in episode #6 and synchronicity in episode #14 for listeners who want to go into detail about that. And the topic of The Shadow is coming up too, so look out for that. But to understand the metaphysical implications of his theories we need a special guest. He is philosopher and author Bernardo Kastrup. Bernardo is the executive director of Essentia Foundation and his work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental (he has a PHD in philosophy). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) (he also has a PHD in Computer science!). He has written many academic papers and books, has appeared on many media outlets and writes regularly for the Scientific American. Today we'll be mostly speaking about one of his most recent books “Decoding Jung's Metaphysics, the archetypal semantics of an experiential universe”. But we do take time first to talk about his scientific and philosophical worldview, as it related directly to Jung's. What we discuss: 00:00 Intro 06:40 Materialism VS the church: The history of Idealism 14:20 The dissociative boundary between us and the mind at large 22:20 Neural correlates + interacting across the dissociative boundary 25:50 Anaesthesia: Mistaking unresponsiveness for unconsciousness 29:45 Jung's Metaphysics 31:20 The unconscious is active and creative, not a passive container 38:40 Archetypes are primordial templates of manifestation 39:40 ‘The ego is a little boat floating on a raging ocean of psychic activity that it cannot control' 43:20 Was Jung an idealist? 46:00 Causality + synchronicity: Wolfgang Pauli and Jung 47:10 Individual quantum events are not causal, so they are governed by synchronicities 48:00 Causality itself is an aggregate effect of microscopic level synchronistic effects 01:04:40 Bernardo's midlife crisis - the first and second half of life 01:06:20 Individuation explained 01:09:20 ‘The freedom of the Slave': The impersonal flow of nature channeled through you 01:20:50 Etiology: spontaneous VS deliberate purpose 01:26:20 Interpreting quantum phenomena through an idealist, Jungian lens 01:34:20 Physical quantities only exist if you look, if you measure 01:35:20 Entanglement and materialism's difficulty 01:40:20 The states of the world are not physical but probabilistic states, physical states arise from measurement 01:48:20 Primordial truth beyond space time, is projected into space-time 01:51:50 Evolution is a spatio-temporal projection 01:53:30 Are Psi phenomena and military UAP experiencers manifestations of the unconscious? 02:03:40 Humility in the face of the unknown about the nature of reality References: “Decoding Jung's Metaphysics, the archetypal semantics of an experiential universe” Bernardo Kastrup “Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle” Carl Jung

The world we generally take to be real is only one version of the world, the one our senses and our minds allow us to experience, and that experience is different for every single human being. This week, instead of bringing you a podcast interview, I'd like to share something a bit more personal. I'd like tell you about my father, Prof. Dr. Max G. Krell. In so many ways, he's the reason I'm the person I am today. My father was a nuclear physicist. He was born in 1935 in Lower Silesia, a region that was part of Germany before the Second World War and is now part of Poland. He studied Physics at the university of Erlangen, in Bavaria, which is where he met my mother. As newlyweds, they moved to Karlsruhe, another German university town, so that my father could pursue his doctorate. They then relocated to Geneva, where my father worked at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for several years. Eventually, my father accepted a tenure-track position in the department of Physics at the Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec. Leaving behind all their family and friends, my parents immigrated to Canada. My mother was almost eight months pregnant at the time, and I was born about a month after they had settled into their small apartment near the university campus. My father had a three-decades long career as a science professor in Sherbrooke. He finally retired in 1999, and happily devoted himself to his 100-acre hobby farm. He had bought the property, a ten-minute drive from the university, when I was two years old. It was a perfectly square, partially forested piece of land, with an old “saltbox” style farmhouse, a barn, and a couple of ponds. This was the backdrop of my childhood. To my father, that farm was his very own piece of Paradise, something he could have never afforded if he had stayed in Germany. He often told me about his own childhood, vividly remembering the years around World War II. At the end of the war, he and his family had had to flee their village and head west to safety, with basically just the clothes on their backs and whatever they could carry on foot. The years right after the war, his formative years, were especially difficult. His family had to start all over in a new town, mourning loved ones lost in the war, rebuilding their lives from scratch, and food was in short supply. I suppose that's why my father was obsessed with the idea of having his own land and being as food self-sufficient as possible. My mother, whose family had also had to flee westward at the end of the war, was on the same page. Thinking back now, I realize what a wonderfully idyllic childhood I had, growing up in the beautiful countryside of the Eastern Townships – though I often dreamed of city life, especially as a teenager. We had a huge vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry shrubs, beehives, a small herd of sheep, rabbits, ducks, geese, and more. I was immersed in the natural world, seeing things grow around me, planting things, harvesting things, witnessing the cycle of life, and knowing exactly where most of my food came from. For my father, the proximity to nature combined with his training as a scientist, also led to environmental activism. In my teens, I remember several citizen-led, pro-environmental initiatives that my father helped launch and organize, which were driven by the prospect of local authorities making potentially disastrous decisions. All through my youth, I witnessed my father fight stubbornly, unflinchingly for what he believed was right, even when it meant opposing the powers-that-be. He taught me some very important lessons about stepping up when it matters and fighting for the greater good. He shaped the core values that I carry with me as an adult: a belief in science, in justice, in personal integrity, and in social responsibility. On April 16th, 2002, exactly three years into his retirement, my father died unexpectedly of a massive stroke. He never got to meet his only grandchild, who was born the year after his death. But I know he would have been so incredibly proud. He also never got to see me launch my own business. But I know he would have been extremely supportive and interested, especially with regards to my new focus on Cleantech. No doubt whatsoever, he would have had a lot to say about the inherent risks of nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels. I wish he was still with us. This Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, marks the 20th anniversary of my father's passing. On the one hand, I can't believe it's already been 20 years. On the other hand, so much has happened in those years – many things that would absolutely amaze and thrill him, and other things that would completely outrage and dismay him. I'm pretty sure that if he were still alive, at the age of 87, he'd be as involved as ever in his local community of environmental activists. My father was a man of strong principles, deep moral convictions, and a level of personal integrity that seems all too rare these days. He believed in fairness, honesty, and accountability. And he wasn't afraid to say unpopular things if he felt that truth and justice were at stake. I'm incredibly proud to be his daughter. In so many ways, his legacy is what drives me now. So this Easter long weekend, I will celebrate my father's life, and I will remember all the things that made him a such wonderful dad and a truly great human being. Whether you're celebrating Easter, Passover, Ramadan, or Songkran, I hope that you're able to spend it with family or friends, sharing memories of loved ones who have passed, and cherishing your time together. Kathrin

Here he and Dawson reflect on: The physicalist postulate, that the physical world of matter is objective reality, is untenable. Experiments in mainstream physics demonstrating this in the past 40 years. Physicality is a representation of a deeper layer of reality which is itself non-physical. It's mental. Human potential movement has distorted the idea to say that you can believe something mentally and it will come true. The massive paradigm shifts in several branches of science. "We are connected to the universe in ways people don't realize. We're connected to stars-- we're made of stardust. Dark matter, which may sound esoteric, is responsible for galaxies and ultimately for our own existence." Lawrence Krauss is here. Explainer, thinker, physicist-- what is fascinating about him is not just his knowledge and ability to speak about the most daunting subjects that face us, but also how he connects science to other fields. How does a vibrating string on a cello make sound? How does a concert hall resonate and sound good, filled with an entire orchestra and thousands of people? What is going to happen to the earth, in simple English, eventually? Lawrence Krauss and Daniel also speak of Krauss's upcoming book, The Physics of Climate Change, and why perhaps politics and science do not always mesh together particularly well. Lawrence Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist and bestselling author, as well as being an acclaimed lecturer. He is currently President of The Origins Project Foundation, which celebrates science and culture by connecting scientists, artists, writers and celebrities with the public through special events, and unique travel opportunities. Todd Adams is a professor of physics at Florida State University, and a member of the High Energy Physics Group that is working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland. He joins the show to discuss the details of this fascinating work, such as the following: How gravitational lensing allows for the estimation of the mass of unseen objects, and how this is used to investigate dark matter In what ways the standard model of particle physics fails to address critical questions and observations in physics What WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) are and why Adams is hoping to produce them in the proton-proton collisions taking place in the Large Hadron Collider The Large Hadron Collider is the “world's largest scientific experiment,” says Adams. It is a particle accelerator that was built underground in Geneva, Switzerland, and is about 17 miles in circumference. It accelerates protons in a circle at a speed close to that of light, with the purpose of observing what happens when protons collide. These collisions are the highest energy collisions ever created in a lab. As many people know from the famous equation E= MC2, energy can be converted to mass, which is the goal at the Hadron Collider; the creation and study of new particles from these high-energy collisions. Adams explains the details of the CMS experiment, which uses a detector five stories in height and 12,000 tons in weight that's designed to detect the particles produced by the high-energy collision of protons. Once the particles have been identified, the goal is to reconstruct precisely what happened at the time of the collision. So, what's the ultimate purpose of these experiments? Adams explains that the standard model of particle physics does an excellent job of explaining most of what we see in the world, but it leaves some compelling questions and observations unanswered, namely what's called “dark matter.” One theory to explain dark matter is the presence of a particle that doesn't interact like normal matter in that it does not interact with light, with the exception of the gravitational effects of light. Adams also discusses why it becomes harder to accelerate a particle to higher velocities as the particle approaches the speed of light, how protons are brought to such high speeds, the importance of the search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), the significance of the Higgs boson, the uncertainty principle from quantum physics, and so much more. 1813 American flotilla under Oliver Hazard Perry wrests naval supremacy from the British on Lake Erie. Nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. This ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war, which in turn allowed the Americans to recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the Indian confederation of Tecumseh. It was one of the biggest naval battles of the War of 1812. The Americans controlled Lake Erie for the remainder of the war. This accounted for much of the Americans' successes on the Niagara peninsula in 1814 and also removed the threat of a British attack on Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Western New York. 1897 First Drunk Driving Arrest. A 25-year-old London taxi driver named George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving after slamming his cab into a building. Smith later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings. 1967 Gibraltar votes to remain a British dependency instead of becoming part of Spain. The vote was overwhelming, with over 12,000 votes to remain, and only 44 votes to join Spain. The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations because Spain asserts a claim to the territory. In 1969, the Spanish government closed the border between Spain and Gibraltar, cutting off all contacts and severely restricting movement. The border was not fully reopened until February 1985. 1977 Last Person to be Executed in France, Hamida Djandoubi was also the last person to be executed by a guillotine. Djandoubi was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of 21-year old Elisabeth Bousquet. 2008 Scientists successfully flip the switch for the first time on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) lab in Geneva, kicking off what many called history's biggest science experiment. The world's largest particle collider was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). It is an 18-mile (27km) long experimental machine which passes through the French-Swiss border. The Collider was constructed to find the Higgs Boson particle, an elementary particle in physics.

Lisa Randall: China’s Ambition In Building Particle Collider Can Be "Ground-Breaking"

As moviegoers were mesmerized by the futuristic stories in Christopher Nolan's science fiction film Interstellar, Harvard University's theoretical physicist Lisa Randall says the high-grossing movie - even though "technically accurate" - failed to illustrate the type of extra dimensions she tries to picture in her own mind. "They have to make it [the fifth dimension] visible to people looking at the screen, which means that some of the subtle effects - that are on scales that you'd never be able to see with your naked eyes, won't be shown in the movie," Randall explains in a recent interview with China Money Network in Hong Kong during her trip in Asia. But as the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University with research interests in elementary particles, fundamental forces and extra dimensions of space, Randall appreciated how the movie inspired people's interests in science. That inspiration is critical in pushing scientific research forward, she believes. Outside of sci-fi movies, what China has done in practical measures is "inspirational" too, and could be "ground-breaking", Randall says. For example, China's ambitious plan in building the world's most powerful particle collider will produce something twice the size and seven times as powerful as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The planned particle collider, namely China Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), is a long-term project first proposed by the Chinese high energy physics community in 2012. It is a facility used to measure the precise properties of the Higgs boson, or the so-called "God particle", which is regarded as a crucial link that could explain why other elementary particles have mass. Scientists in China have released details for the collider, saying it will produce over one million Higgs bosons in a seven-year period. The project is expected to start construction in 2021 and be completed in 2027, and then put into operation one year after. "Just the idea that it might exist [in China in the future] already has been an incentive for many people to come here," said Randall. "The prospect of having this collider has brought a lot of American physicist who I know – I mean, maybe other countries as well – to China." Concerning the overall research environment in China, Randall says her main concern lays in the "hierarchical system" that she has observed. "It seems like it's an environment where there's one person who gets a lot of resources and people have to accommodate that," she says. Instead of focusing funding a few great scientists and let them have the right to determine everything, Randall believes that China should spread resources more widely, so that the young generation can be more independent and have a chance to lead new innovations. Lisa Randall is an American theoretical physicist working in particle physics and cosmology at Harvard University. Her research connects theoretical insights to puzzles in the current understanding of the properties and interactions of matter. She has developed and studied a wide variety of models to address these questions, most prominently involving extra dimensions of space. Read an interview Q&A below. Also subscribe to China Money Podcast for free in the iTunes store, or subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Below is an edited version of the interview. Q: If you look at the global top 20 best universities to study physics, twelve are American universities and only one university is from China, which is Tsinghua University. Why American universities are so strong in providing good physics research environment? And what should China do to improve this? A: Well, (American universities) have a longer history of doing this. I think it's only recently that China has had these very big modernization. One thing China is doing is promoting experiments and observations. There are dark matter experiments,

A lot of the negative emotions of anxiety and depression are stress driven, so if you have a powerful stress buster, and meditation generally is meant to be a stressful. Remember, mindfulness based stress reduction is meant to be a stress buster. The very, very deep rest that comes with tm is an even more powerful stress buster. That completely changes the complexion of one's emotions. So also because meditation takes your awareness deep to very fine, fine levels of feeling one's emotions, tend to get more deeply appreciated. They become richer. You start to feel more like a fine artist who has a very deep kind of feeling for things. I didn't have that kind of refinement growing up. So that's a nice side effect of meditation. Thoughts on Breathing That's very interesting. In the TM technique, you don't really worry about your breath. You just follow the mind as it flows into this state of deep silence and inner unboundedness and your breath goes with it in the sense that as the mind gets deeply rested and settled, the breath gets deeply rested and settled. In the meditative state, the deepest points of meditation, I'd swear I wasn't breathing. Now, if you really pay attention to it, you'll notice that there is a puff of breath coming up the nose and a just a puff of breath coming out, but it doesn't even really get past your head and you're living on that. The requirement for oxygen goes way down. When the body is deeply rested and the cells inside the body aren't burning as much oxygen, aren't burning as much fuel. So a very deep state of rest will soften the breath and my breath is soft even an activity as a consequence of that regular practice. I tend to always stand up for the underdog, whoever might be getting bullied to within the limits of my own strength and of course as a younger person, I was as vulnerable as anybody and I didn't have as much strength as I would've wanted to stand up more forcefully for people who were being misused. But as a physicist who is willing to talk about consciousness and is dedicated to researching consciousness, that makes me a little bit of an outlier in the physics community because physical scientists don't talk about consciousness. It's like, real men don't do ballet because for a physicist, we study the physical world, we're meat and potatoes people. If we can see it, we can touch it, we can taste it, it's real. This consciousness stuff, what is that, the tooth fairy, Santa Claus? It's a crazy point of view because physicists have consciousness. They should recognize that they are conscious and since consciousness doesn't exist within their physical equations, they tend to dismiss it as something that's not real. Actually, if they take their study of physics more deeply, they will discover that consciousness does fit into their physical equations. That is the very source of physics and every discipline for that matter, but be that as it may, having been a bit of an outlier, willing to talk about conscience, that there are plenty of physicists who have dismissed me. In fact, when I went from Stanford University Faculty to Maharishi University Faculty in 1983, people wrote me off. They thought that was kind of obviously going to be the end of me. It wasn't. I mean that was really the start of my fruitful research in physics and I had developed a doctoral program and got a national science foundation grant to do research in unified field theory. So my physics was fine, but even then, even though my physics was demonstrably better than it had been. I still, I think I probably was considered to be odd because I was into consciousness, into meditation and so forth. So definitely you can tell when you're at a social event or conference involving other physicists, you know, physicists can take an attitude towards you and they certainly did to me. I certainly felt that at times patronizing and so forth. So if you took that stuff seriously and it was certainly tempting for me at times, you know, to react to it, you know, to, to push back in a way that might not be productive, you know, get into an argument or toss an insult back to the other person. But, by about that time in my life, you know, I had been meditating for quite some years and I didn't find myself overthrown by it. I found the whole thing actually a little humorous. I was able to just smile quietly as all this was going on because it was going on. I know it was going on. I wasn't always invited to give the keynote speeches at conferences. Even if I did the keynote research behind it, you know, just a little bit of a second class treatment. It was as though I were an African American in the deep South 40 years ago. You just don't get the same treatment. I mean, you know, it just wasn't the nature of the culture at the time. And I felt a little bit like that. Anyway, yes, being grounded in yourself is really so key. It's really important to be in the driver's seat in the sense that you're not reactive because if you're reactive, if you're defensive, it's hard to know what you're going to say, but it's probably not going to serve you. Right? So being grounded in yourself, your big self, your inner silence, unshakably so. And that's something that's developed over years and years. That's a great antidote to overreacting and from ever getting thrown off of your feet. Relax and Breathe Summit Join me, Bruce Langford, on the Relax and Breathe Summit. 10/23/2017 In everyday life individuals learn by ‘seeing’ things using light; the same is true in science. The extraordinary power of synchrotron light has made it an essential tool for studying matter on scales ranging from biological cells to atoms. This lecture discusses the idea of SESAME, an international institute in the Middle East built on the successful model of CERN, in fields like archaeology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, medicine, and physics. What is Consciousness? Is it unique to human cognition or is it universal and permeating all things? Is it an epiphenomenon of brain activity or a universal constant? Do all things 'have' consciousness or are they 'of', 'in', or 'by' consciousness? Who and what are we, humankind, in the grander process of Consciousness itself? What is the nature of this whole "Reality" game? For the 50th episode of Adventures Through The Mind podcast, we welcome philosopher Bernardo Kastrup onto the show to address these questions and more. For Full Show Notes & Links: bit.ly/ATTMind50 Bernardo Kastrup has a Ph.D. in computer engineering with specializations in artificial intelligence and reconfigurable computing. He has worked as a scientist in some of the world's foremost research laboratories, including the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the "Casimir Effect" of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). He has authored many academic papers and books on philosophy and science.   Support The Show: Patreon PayPal Donation   Episode Breakdown Building conscious machines. What is consciousness? The hard problem of Consciousness. It's not Panpsychism. Do rocks and trees have consciousness? How about weather patterns and neurons? Differentiating 'conscious experience' from 'consciousness'. The subjectivity of objective reality. God suffers from dissociated identity disorder. Autonomous human awareness, nestled in consciousness. Filtering the mind at large. The relationship between brain activity and subjective inner life. What psychedelics show us about the nature of conscious awareness and brain activity. Metacognition and the default mode network. Physicalism as a neurotic defense mechanism.

Marco Trovatello The International Organisations (IGO) European Space Agency ESA, the United Nations World Intellectual Propoerty Organisation WIPO, the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN and UNESCO, the UN scientific and cultural organisation, have one thing in common: All of them adopted, more or less recently, an Open Access policy for their information and data.  Producing a wealth of data and content such as images, videos, reports, scientific results etc., these have been published until not long ago under traditional all rights reserved licences. With their recent changes in policy, the aforementioned IGO's can now facilitate use and re-use for the general public, media, the educational sector, partners and anybody else seeking to utilise and build upon the material. “Open access to ESA's images, information and knowledge is not just necessary to spread Space news and content as widely as possible in today's digital age, but it is also necessary to give back scientific-technical knowledge and insight to the tax payers who fund us” states e.g. ESA. Most IGO's have decided to release content under the Creative Commons IGO licencing scheme. CC IGO licences were designed for use by intergovernmental organisations. Marco Trovatello, working for the European Space Agency's Communcation Department, will represent the International Organisations (IGO) Working Group on Open Access to discuss the groups intentions, strategies and their policies in practice, eager to receive feedback and engage in an open dialogue with the audience.
