In this interview, I'm joined by two leading thinkers who are helping to reshape our understanding of consciousness, the nature of reality, and the pursuit of meaning in life: Dr Iain McGilchrist and Dr Bernardo Kastrup. Iain is a neuroscientist, psychiatrist, author, and philosopher perhaps most well known for his Hemispheric Hypothesis and his books: The Master and his Emissary and The Matter with Things. Bernardo is an author, scientist, philosopher, and the Director of the Essentia Foundation. He holds two PhDs - one in philosophy and the other in engineering. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. In this conversation, we explore: — Their views on what consciousness is, the common ground in their thinking, and the differences — The extent to Iain and Bernardo believe we live in a purposeful and intelligent universe, and their perspectives on the question of God — Why they both consider truth to be the most important thing in life — Where they see human life fitting into the larger whole and what case can be made that each of our individual subjective experiences do matter. I hope you get as much from this fascinating discussion as I did from recording it. You can learn more about Iain's work at https://channelmcgilchrist.com, and Bernardo's at https://www.bernardokastrup.com. -- Dr Iain McGilchrist is a Psychiatrist and Writer. He is committed to the idea that the mind and brain can be understood only by seeing them in the broadest possible context, that of the whole of our physical and spiritual existence, and of the wider human culture in which they arise – the culture which helps to mould, and in turn is moulded by, our minds and brains. He was formerly a Consultant Psychiatrist of the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley NHS Trust in London, where he was Clinical Director of their southern sector Acute Mental Health Services. Dr McGilchrist has published original research and contributed chapters to books on a wide range of subjects, as well as original articles in papers and journals, including the British Journal of Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Telegraph and The Sunday Times. He has taken part in many radio and TV programmes, documentaries, and numerous podcasts, and interviews on YouTube, among them dialogues with Jordan Peterson, David Fuller of Rebel Wisdom, and philosopher Tim Freke. His books include Against Criticism, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, The Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning, and Ways of Attending. He published his latest book: The Matter With Things, a book of epistemology and metaphysics. You can keep up to date with his work at https://channelmcgilchrist.com. Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (ontology, philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (reconfigurable computing, artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the ‘Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). Formulated in detail in many academic papers and books, his ideas have been featured on Scientific American, the Institute of Art and Ideas, the Blog of the American Philosophical Association and Big Think, among others. In this dialogue, Prof Christo Doherty, the Chair of Research in the Wits School of Arts, speaks to Ariane Koek, a prominent British independent producer, curator, and writer, recognized globally for her pioneering work at the intersection of art and science. With a career spanning several decades Ariane is particularly noted for founding the Arts at CERN program, which she designed and directed from 2009 to 2015. This initiative was the first official international arts program at CERN and aimed to foster collaboration between artists and scientists. Under her leadership, the program included various residency opportunities for artists, allowing them to explore and interpret scientific concepts through their creative practices. The project has just been awarded the Grand Prize - Innovative Collaboration at Ars Electronica 2024. The prize recognises innovative collaboration between industry or technology and the arts (and the cultural and creative sectors in general) that opens new pathways for innovation. In this podcast we focus on the Arts at CERN project, a curatorial and political challenge that Ariane launched single-handedly in 2010. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is an intergovernmental organization comprising 24 member states, that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world situated in a vast complex based outside Geneva in Switzerland. CERN's main function is to provide particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research. The lab's most notable project is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and highest-energy particle collider, consisting of a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets. The Centre has approximately 2,660 scientific, technical, and administrative staff members, and in 2019 hosted about 12,400 users from institutions in more than 70 countries. We do a deep dive into the experience of setting up the Arts at CERN programme and the lessons Ariane learnt from working with artists and scientists in such a challenging context. We then go on to unpack Ariane's more recent insistence that we need to go beyond the acceptance of art-science collaborations as “de facto” positive and the implications of this insight for her current work as a producer and curator. Finally we touch on the continuing importance of aesthetics in both contemporary art and science while recognising the different meaning of the term "beauty" in artistic and scientific discourses. In today's episode, I had the absolute honor of speaking with one of my personal intellectual heroes, Bernardo Kastrup. Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of the Essentia Foundation. His work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy (with a focus in ontology and philosophy of mind) and another Ph.D. in computer engineering (with a focus in reconfigurable computing and artificial intelligence). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Philips Research Laboratories (where the 'Casimir Effect' of Quantum Field Theory was discovered). He has also had a 25-year career in high-technology, having co-founded parallel processing company Silicon Hive (which was acquired by Intel in 2011). Bernardo Kastrup is also the author of 11 books. I basically have an entire Kastrup shelf inmy office. His book, “Meaning In Absurdity: What Bizarre Phenomena Can Tell Us About the Nature of Reality” is, in my opinion, one of the most important books written on the UFO phenomenon. I can't recommend it highly enough. Just a heads up before we begin—if you aren't familiar with Kastrup's thinking on analytic idealism, the first part of this interview might be a little challenging. If you stick it out, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how elegantly analytic idealism deals with some of the more mysterious aspects of the anomalous phenomena. If you'd like to learn more about analytic idealism, there are some great resources and videos that can walk you through it step-by-step. A University of Galway delegation has taken part in a national fact-finding mission as part of Ireland's proposal for membership of CERN - the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Professor James Livesey, University of Galway's Vice-President for Research and Innovation, and Dr Aaron Golden, Vice-Dean for Research and Innovation, at the University's College of Science & Engineering, visited the world's largest particle physics laboratory as part of an Irish delegation. An intergovernmental organisation based in Geneva near the border between Switzerland and France, CERN has 23 member states. Almost 3000 people are employed on the huge campus which every year plays hosts about 12,000 people from scientific institutions from more than 70 countries. CERN currently operates the most powerful particle accelerator in the world, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where proton beams moving at a fraction of the speed of light are smashed together, recreating, for an instant, explosions of energy that have only ever occurred at the origin of the universe, unlocking the fundamental constituents of matter. Vast experiments sweep up the blizzard of fragments, and painstakingly identify new physics - in the form of new types of matter. Work at CERN has resulted in no less than 5 Nobel prizes to date, most recently for the discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012. Professor James Livesey, Vice-President for Research and Innovation, said: "This visit really emphasised to us all on the delegation the incredible value to University of Galway that Irish membership of CERN would bring, across so many levels. It is difficult to identify any other scientific facility in Europe that is such a source of wonder and inspiration and CERN's outreach mission is second to none. The creativity in physics and mathematics essential to understanding the most fundamental science possible using the LHC is mirrored in the creativity needed by the engineering and technical teams to build and operate these astonishing 'discovery machines'. Having Galway in the community of practice around CERN would make us members of one of the most creative and innovative groups in the world." The Irish delegation took part in a day-long visit to CERN, including tours of several of the currently operating particle and nuclear physics experiments on the campus, along with presentations and Q&A sessions with CERN personnel, highlighting the breadth of activities to which membership would give access to. Beyond its core mission of pushing the frontier of fundamental physics, CERN is heavily involved in the application of technology transfer to areas as diverse as algorithm development, network and computational infrastructure, materials science and medical physics. CERN operates a unique access programme for members, that provides funding for undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers to visit and work on site in areas that cover the full spectrum of its activities, with the graduate engineering training programmes being widely considered one of the best in Europe. Dr Aaron Golden, Vice-Dean for Research and Innovation, College of Science & Engineering said: "It was eye-opening to find out directly CERN's medtech innovation activities, from novel radiotherapeutics to medical device development to tumour biology modelling, and their support of member state colleagues in these areas. The University of Galway is uniquely placed to engage with such access, particularly with the recent opening of UHG's Saolta Radiation Oncology Centre." CERN will be sending a delegation to visit Ireland in April of this year to assess Ireland's application for membership. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD has announced that Ireland has been successful in the next step to join the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. CERN considered Ireland's application last week and agreed to send a taskforce to Ireland to assess its application. The taskforce will produce a report on Ireland's fulfilment of the criteria for Associate Membership. After reviewing this report, it is likely that CERN Council will make a final decision on Ireland's application for Associate Membership in June of 2024. Speaking today, Minister Harris said: "Today is another step towards Ireland's membership of CERN. I am thrilled to announce that CERN had agreed to consider Ireland's application and will now send a taskforce here to progress our application. "Ireland's membership of CERN has been long awaited and will be transformative for the research community. "We already have a very strong physics community in Ireland who are ready to participate in this highly respected international collaboration. "CERN's primary mission is to understand the fundamental nature of the universe. The full inclusion of Irish scientists, researchers and engineers in that mission is justly deserved and has been long anticipated both here in Ireland and abroad." Minister Harris added: "With CERN membership, Irish citizens will gain access to CERN's formal training schemes. "These include masters and PhD programmes, apprenticeships, a graduate engineering training scheme, internships for computer scientists and engineers, and technical training experience. "These skills would be developed far beyond what is possible in Ireland and are in industry-relevant areas such as electronics, photonics, materials, energy systems and software. "The benefits of Ireland's membership of CERN are immeasurable and I look forward to welcoming CERN's task force in due course." See more stories here. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD has today secured Government approval to submit Ireland's formal application to join the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) as an Associate Member. CERN is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Ireland to join CERN Speaking at Government Buildings today, Minister Harris said: "This is a development that has been, for decades, eagerly awaited by our academic community and I would like to thank them for their assistance in bringing us to this milestone in Irish science and in preparing Ireland's formal application. "I am so pleased we have reached this milestone moment. CERN will consider the application in mid-December. I really want to thank my Department officials for all of their work. We are on the cusp of something significant." Membership of CERN can be expected to bring benefits to Ireland across research, industry, skills, science outreach, and international relations. It will open doors for Ireland's researchers to participate in CERN's scientific programmes and will make Irish citizens eligible for staff positions and fellowships at CERN. With CERN membership, Irish citizens will gain access to CERN's formal training schemes. These include masters and PhD programmes, apprenticeships, a graduate engineering training scheme, internships for computer scientists and engineers, and technical training experience. These skills will be developed far beyond what is possible in Ireland and are in industry-relevant areas such as electronics, photonics, materials, energy systems and software. Membership will also allow Ireland's enterprises to compete in CERN procurement programmes. Much of CERN's instrumentation and equipment requires the development or exploitation of novel technologies, which spurs enterprise innovation. Many of these technologies have applications in other spheres such as medicine, space, energy and ICT. Minister Harris added: "My Department will continue to work closely with CERN, in order to expedite the application process and we hope that Ireland's membership can commence in late 2024. We will continue to work with the academic community to make the necessary preparations for the Irish researchers to participate effectively at CERN from day one of Irish membership." It is hoped that CERN Council may be in a position to agree this December to send a fact-finding Task Force to Ireland in March 2024 to carry out their formal assessment. The Department will then formally establish the National Advisory Committee on CERN to prepare for membership and to coordinate with CERN's fact-finding Task Force. The Task Force will submit a report on Ireland's suitability for Associate Membership to the Director-General and the President of the CERN Council. In June 2024, the CERN Council may take a final vote on whether to admit Ireland as an Associate Member. Notes to editors CERN is an intergovernmental organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. CERN is the leading global collaboration investigating the fundamental composition of matter. It was established in 1954 and straddles the Franco-Swiss border, just outside Geneva. CERN currently has 23 Member States (including most of the EU Member States) and has co-operation agreements with over 40 other states. The main focus of activity in CERN is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This is an underground ring which is 27km in circumference in which protons, one of the constituent particles of an atom, are accelerated to 99.9999991% of the speed of light and collided into one another. The Large Hadron Collider was used to discover the Higgs boson in 2012. CERN also plays a leading role in promoting and organising international cooperation in scientific research The CERN Convention specifically stipulates that CERN "shall have no concern with work for military requirements and the results of...

A UFOlogist is pretty much anyone who studies the topic and shares their research. Just like journalists, there isn't a UFOlogy certification. On top of that, those that seek to foster the stigma are more than pleased to slather pseudoscience over the term. In that respect, I'd not consider myself any sort of ‘ologist, more of a layperson translator. I'm seeking to advance understanding. The Geneva-area lab that houses the world's largest atom smasher, known as CERN, has inaugurated a new “Science Gateway” that hopes to make its complex inner workings and the science that drives it comprehensible—and inspiring—to everyone aged 5 and above. Chiefs at the European Organization for Nuclear Research—CERN's official name—say improvements were needed to better welcome the tens of thousands of tourists who flock to its entrance every year near the French-Swiss border. So, they called in famed architect Renzo Piano, a friend of and fellow Italian to CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, to design the structure. “With the Science Gateway, we want to expand the opportunities for scientific education that we offer to the public,” explains Gianotti. Entry will be free, and opening times run from Monday through Saturday. One major goal, Gianotti says, was “to infuse everyone who comes here with curiosity and a passion for science and inspire young people to take up careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.” Before, CERN welcomed 150,000 tourists a year—but the “Science Gateway” will balloon capacity to 500,000, says Gianotti. Teenage guides showcase the science behind glitzy, light-infused displays during inauguration day festivities. Drawn to the project, Piano visited the site first. “So, I came to CERN, I went around, down in the large collider. I talked to people, I talked to scientists, and then (it) became clear that those people needed a bridge: a real one, but also a metaphorical one, connecting the world of a scientist with the outside world.” Piano says he was “touched” by the “incredible” work of CERN scientists exploring everything from the tiniest atomic particles to the Big Bang, which helps to understand “that the Planet Earth is a little spaceship on which we are, all of us, embarked.” The “Science Gateway” center is powered by solar panels and is nestled in a wooded area. It features a transparent glass design and a bridge—to symbolize openness and links to the big and the small in science. It houses laboratories, exhibition areas, and an auditorium. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 I'll propose an idealist ontology more parsimonious and empirically rigorous than mainstream physicalism, bottom-up panpsychism, and cosmopsychism. The ontology also offers more explanatory power than these three alternatives, in that it does not fall prey to the hard problem of consciousness, the combination problem, or the decomposition problem, respectively. It can be summarized as follows: there is only universal consciousness. We, as well as all other living organisms, are but dissociated alters of universal consciousness, surrounded by its mental activity. The inanimate world we see around us is the extrinsic appearance of this activity. The living organisms we share the world with are the extrinsic appearances of other dissociated alters. --- Bernardo Kastrup is the executive director of Essentia Foundation. What are the implications of Jung's theories about the Collective Unconscious, Archetypes, Synchronicity and Individuation? What can they suggest about the nature of reality and the anomalies of modern science? In this episode we have the fascinating topic of the metaphysics implied by Carl Jung's theories to discuss. Jung is one of the great hero's of this podcast, we covered the collective unconscious in episode #6 and synchronicity in episode #14 for listeners who want to go into detail about that. And the topic of The Shadow is coming up too, so look out for that. But to understand the metaphysical implications of his theories we need a special guest. He is philosopher and author Bernardo Kastrup. Bernardo is the executive director of Essentia Foundation and his work has been leading the modern renaissance of metaphysical idealism, the notion that reality is essentially mental (he has a PHD in philosophy). As a scientist, Bernardo has worked for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) (he also has a PHD in Computer science!). He has written many academic papers and books, has appeared on many media outlets and writes regularly for the Scientific American. Today we'll be mostly speaking about one of his most recent books “Decoding Jung's Metaphysics, the archetypal semantics of an experiential universe”. But we do take time first to talk about his scientific and philosophical worldview, as it related directly to Jung's. The start of a new year is a time to look both forward and back. On this week's On the Media, hear how facing our climate's fragility could inspire hope, instead of despair. Plus, a physicist explains how creation stories help us understand our place in the universe. 1. Luke Kemp [@LukaKemp], a Research Associate at Cambridge's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk, on a new study that says we need to put more attention on the possibility of human extinction and other climate catastrophes. Bryan Walsh [@bryanrwalsh], editor of Vox's ‘Future Perfect,' also explains why our brains have a hard time processing catastrophes like climate change. Listen. 2. Mark Blyth [@MkBlyth], professor of International Economics and Public Affairs at Brown University, on how the economy is ultimately a mirror of our accomplishments, advances, fears, and mistakes. Listen.3. The Institute of Physics (IOP), alongside the Higher Education Institutes, academics and students across Ireland, is today calling on Government join CERN as an Associate Member. This would cost Government approximately €1.46 million, only 10% of full membership costs, and would demonstrate a clear commitment to R&D alongside the many benefits of being a member. This comes as the IOP, the largest professional body for physics in Ireland and the UK, and academics met today with Senators to outline why Ireland should join CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. The IOP welcomes the commitment of Leader of the Seanad, Senator Regina Doherty, and a large number of Senators who participated in the briefing, among them Senator Malcolm Byrne and Senator Jerry Buttimer, and looks forward to the Seanad debating how to progress Ireland's membership. Today's briefing with Senators follows comments from Minister Simon Harris TD, Minister for Further & Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science stating his Department is preparing a submission to Government regarding Ireland joining CERN. Joining CERN would have significant benefits for Ireland in terms of investment in infrastructure, science, education & training, and technology, and would increase job opportunities: Irish-based companies could bid for CERN contracts – Irish companies can currently only bid for contracts that can't be sourced in CERN member states. Only one contract has been secured to date. Irish citizens could apply for job positions at CERN – those working across physics, engineering, legal, accounting and administration could avail of significant international job opportunities. Irish academics could apply for CERN research projects – this would create massive investment in Irish academia in addition to showcasing the depth and breadth of Ireland's education expertise. Irish students at all levels could apply for CERN training programmes – training the next round of experts would result in massive job creation in Ireland, in addition to increasing Ireland's scientific knowledge and expertise. Membership would put Ireland at the forefront of pushing advancement in the areas of technology and research. The IOP commends Government's recognition to date of the importance of joining CERN. Associate Membership was recommended by the Joint Committee on Business, Enterprise and Innovation in 2019 and as part of Government's Innovation 2020 strategy. Commenting, Lee Reynolds, Head of IOP Ireland and Northern Ireland (Job Share) with the Institute of Physics said: “We are today calling on Government to move forward and to join CERN as an Associate Member. Doing so will ensure job creation in addition to significant investment in research, training and technology, while ensuring Ireland is at the forefront of scientific discovery and research. We welcome today's engagement with Senators from across the political spectrum, and we look forward to working alongside Senators, Ministers and Department officials into the future to realise Ireland's potential in this area. “The urgency to join CERN is evident; Ireland is currently one of only three EU countries not to have a relationship with CERN, alongside Malta and Luxembourg. This means Irish researchers wishing to avail of opportunities are reliant on using their own relationships with university abroad to access research projects. This means that, once innovation is achieved and projects complete, Irish researchers can't reap the full benefits. Equally Irish companies are barred from tendering for a broad range of high value contracts. “Joining CERN will create job opportunities and employment, will ensure Irish companies working in these areas can thrive, and will create further international opportunities for our students. In addition, it will clearly demonstrate Ireland's commitment to research and development and will si...

A group of climate scientists warn that the potential for humanity's mass extinction has been dangerously underexplored. On this week's On the Media, we hear how facing our planet's fragility could inspire hope, instead of despair, and a physicist explains how creation stories are essential for understanding our place in the universe. Listen. Charles Piller [@cpiller], investigative reporter for Science Magazine, on his six month investigation into how faulty images may invalidate groundbreaking advancements in Alzheimer's research. Listen. Guido Tonelli, a particle physicist at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, on the importance of creation myths, and what scientists can tell us about the fragility of the universe. Listen.
Ten years ago, a team operating the world's largest particle collider made history by discovering the Higgs boson particle, a finding key to understanding the creation of the universe, earning it the nickname the “God particle.”After a more than three year pause for upgrades, the accelerator, run by the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, is collecting data again. This time it's out to prove the existence of another mysterious substance — dark matter. Though scientists largely believe dark matter is real, none have been able to see or create it. Data collection and power upgrades made to the particle smasher, called the Large Hadron Collider, could provide researchers one of their best chances to visualize and understand the substance. Where is the money coming from to fund these experiments and since it can affect the entire earth why don't most people know that this experiment is happening or happened for a 3rd time on July 2, 2022? What are the longterm affects? What does the Mandela effect have to do with crashing of particles?! This is self admittedly a scientist laboratory kerfuffle EP. Dive right in

Are we all in a shared dream? Is the world that we perceive truly the world as it is? Dr. Tony Nader sits down with Dr. Bernardo Kastrup to discuss Idealism and the Nature of Ultimate Reality. The world we generally take to be real is only one version of the world, the one our senses and our minds allow us to experience, and that experience is different for every single human being. Do you think we're stuck within the limitations of our senses, which can only deliver impressions within the range that they were designed to recognize? This week, instead of bringing you a podcast interview, I'd like to share something a bit more personal. I'd like tell you about my father, Prof. Dr. Max G. Krell. In so many ways, he's the reason I'm the person I am today. My father was a nuclear physicist. He was born in 1935 in Lower Silesia, a region that was part of Germany before the Second World War and is now part of Poland. He studied Physics at the university of Erlangen, in Bavaria, which is where he met my mother. As newlyweds, they moved to Karlsruhe, another German university town, so that my father could pursue his doctorate. They then relocated to Geneva, where my father worked at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for several years. Eventually, my father accepted a tenure-track position in the department of Physics at the Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec. Leaving behind all their family and friends, my parents immigrated to Canada. My mother was almost eight months pregnant at the time, and I was born about a month after they had settled into their small apartment near the university campus. My father had a three-decades long career as a science professor in Sherbrooke. He finally retired in 1999, and happily devoted himself to his 100-acre hobby farm. He had bought the property, a ten-minute drive from the university, when I was two years old. It was a perfectly square, partially forested piece of land, with an old “saltbox” style farmhouse, a barn, and a couple of ponds. This was the backdrop of my childhood. To my father, that farm was his very own piece of Paradise, something he could have never afforded if he had stayed in Germany. He often told me about his own childhood, vividly remembering the years around World War II. At the end of the war, he and his family had had to flee their village and head west to safety, with basically just the clothes on their backs and whatever they could carry on foot. The years right after the war, his formative years, were especially difficult. His family had to start all over in a new town, mourning loved ones lost in the war, rebuilding their lives from scratch, and food was in short supply. I suppose that's why my father was obsessed with the idea of having his own land and being as food self-sufficient as possible. My mother, whose family had also had to flee westward at the end of the war, was on the same page. Thinking back now, I realize what a wonderfully idyllic childhood I had, growing up in the beautiful countryside of the Eastern Townships – though I often dreamed of city life, especially as a teenager. We had a huge vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry shrubs, beehives, a small herd of sheep, rabbits, ducks, geese, and more. I was immersed in the natural world, seeing things grow around me, planting things, harvesting things, witnessing the cycle of life, and knowing exactly where most of my food came from. For my father, the proximity to nature combined with his training as a scientist, also led to environmental activism. In my teens, I remember several citizen-led, pro-environmental initiatives that my father helped launch and organize, which were driven by the prospect of local authorities making potentially disastrous decisions. All through my youth, I witnessed my father fight stubbornly, unflinchingly for what he believed was right, even when it meant opposing the powers-that-be. He taught me some very important lessons about stepping up when it matters and fighting for the greater good. He shaped the core values that I carry with me as an adult: a belief in science, in justice, in personal integrity, and in social responsibility. On April 16th, 2002, exactly three years into his retirement, my father died unexpectedly of a massive stroke. He never got to meet his only grandchild, who was born the year after his death. But I know he would have been so incredibly proud. He also never got to see me launch my own business. But I know he would have been extremely supportive and interested, especially with regards to my new focus on Cleantech. No doubt whatsoever, he would have had a lot to say about the inherent risks of nuclear energy as an alternative to fossil fuels. I wish he was still with us. This Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday, marks the 20th anniversary of my father's passing. On the one hand, I can't believe it's already been 20 years. On the other hand, so much has happened in those years – many things that would absolutely amaze and thrill him, and other things that would completely outrage and dismay him. I'm pretty sure that if he were still alive, at the age of 87, he'd be as involved as ever in his local community of environmental activists. My father was a man of strong principles, deep moral convictions, and a level of personal integrity that seems all too rare these days. He believed in fairness, honesty, and accountability. And he wasn't afraid to say unpopular things if he felt that truth and justice were at stake. I'm incredibly proud to be his daughter. In so many ways, his legacy is what drives me now. So this Easter long weekend, I will celebrate my father's life, and I will remember all the things that made him a such wonderful dad and a truly great human being. Whether you're celebrating Easter, Passover, Ramadan, or Songkran, I hope that you're able to spend it with family or friends, sharing memories of loved ones who have passed, and cherishing your time together.
