He is the Chief Executive Officer of the David Lynch Foundation and has helped bring meditation to more than a million students in underserved schools in 35 countries, to military veterans and their families who suffer from post-traumatic stress, and to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Ali is pretty cynical when it comes to meditation. She’s convinced there is nothing that can possibly calm her busy mind. Then there’s Bob. Bob Roth is the transcendental meditation teacher to the stars having taught, among many others, Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Jackman, Tom Hanks and, yes, George Stephanopoulos. He breaks down with Ali the approach, value, and neuroscience of transcendental meditation, which he says is different from all the other kinds we’ve heard about. Bob Roth is the author of the New York Times bestseller, “Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation.” You may also know him from his SiriusXM radio show, “Success Without Stress” or his bite-sized talks on the podcast “Stay Calm with Bob Roth.” Bob also serves as the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, a nonprofit that provides Transcendental Meditation to at-risk populations. // If you have questions or guest suggestions, Ali would love to hear from you. Bob also directs the Center for Health & Wellness, which is bringing meditation to companies, government organizations, and nonprofit organizations. Bob is the host of the SiriusXM radio show, “Success Without Stress” and has spoken about meditation to industry leaders at such gatherings as Google Zeitgeist, Aspen Ideas Festival, Aspen Brain Conference, Wisdom 2.0, and Summit. I have been meditating with Bob since this past summer of 2020 and was amazed by his calming energy, daily commitment to provide free Transcendental Meditation (TM in short) for all those who wanted to meditate (and twice a day!) and kindness. His energy reminded me of a modern day Mr. Rogers and for the first time, I stopped feeling badly that I couldn't stop my thoughts. In fact, this is where I learned through constant reminders to easily and effortlessly use my mantra and allow any thoughts without resistance. When I reached out, Bob answered immediately (not typical for someone in a busy, high profile position) and said he'd love to do an interview about his journey and the life changing effects of meditation. Below are some of the high points from that conversation. If you would like to try the daily TM meditation, I have listed the link below. The daily sessions are free, held at 7 am, 8:30 am and 6:00 pm EST, and open to anyone. Being your You-est You is about following the light of truth from within and connecting to your own inner light (I loved Bob's definition). This is a powerful time to go deeper within and find your most truthful you. Everyone is feeling the uncertainty during this pandemic. Uncertainty is one of the biggest causes of stress because the brain wants to keep things certain. We're definitely in unchartered territory and in need of staying calm more than ever. Research of TM has shown that it creates profound healing as it allows the limbic system to release stress and for knots of trauma to release. TM has been used with veterans, those on the front line of duty such as firefighters, police officers and medical professionals, and others overcoming serious trauma to help alleviate massive amounts of stress. Bob suggests treating TM as a medical intervention. The benefits of TM and meditation in general is likened to the ocean where you might have choppy and large waves on the surface, but deeper down it is calm, quiet and serene. The more you meditate, the more your mind becomes like the bottom of the ocean. These deeper levels are more satisfying and given the opportunity, the mind will always be drawn to something more kind. It is in this quieter, lovely place you can meet your own inner-self, with kindness. Some misconceptions about meditation are that your thoughts are supposed to stop. Bob shares that the brain never stops, rather it's about accessing thoughts from a more peaceful and settled place. The mind and body are not separate, as many of us think. They are one. There are profound physiological benefits to being in the restful state of meditation as it allows for your body to heal. I asked Bob what his brightest hope is for the future and the legacy he wishes to leave. He shared that his aim is for humanity to get the normalcy of enlightenment --- that enlightenment is for any human being, regardless of background, religion, spiritual orientation or anything else. He is most passionate about restoring the highest human values on the planet; humility, service, kindness, energy, strength and wisdom. “The analogy of an ocean, where you have choppy waves on the surface, which is constantly tumbled and the choppy waves on the surface are our thoughts, are our feelings up and down and our life up and down, up and down. Success, failure, happy, sad, love, hate, hot, cold, pleasure, pain. [...] Everyone, like an ocean, has turbulence on the surface. But at the depths of the ocean, it's pretty darn steady and silent. We all have within us that field everyone, whether we believe it, [...] it's not a question of believing.” - Bob RothOteil & Mike welcome Bob Roth, renowned Transcendental Meditation teacher and CEO of the David Lynch Foundation. Bob, Mike, and Oteil talk all about meditation in this episode, specifically Transcendental Meditation (TM), which Mike practices twice a day and Bob has taught for over 45 years. Bob explains TM and how it can improve your wellbeing, how it has helped folks with a range of ailments, and shares some of the science behind what’s happening in your brain during meditation. The three discuss accessing similar moments of transcendence in other settings, like scuba diving or playing music, and escaping the seemingly endless condition of anxiety that many of us find ourselves in. Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation leaders in America. Over the past 45 years, Bob has taught Transcendental Meditation to many thousands of people, and he is the author of the 2018 New York Times bestseller Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation. As CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, Bob has helped bring Transcendental Meditation to more than one million students in underserved schools in 35 countries, to military veterans and their families who suffer from post-traumatic stress and to women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Bob also directs the Center for Health and Wellness, which is bringing meditation to Fortune 100 companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Bob is the host of the SiriusXM radio show Success Without Stress and has spoken about the “science of meditation" to industry leaders at gatherings such as Google Zeitgeist, the Aspen Ideas Festival, the Aspen Brain Conference, Wisdom 2.0 Conference, the Global Wellness Summit and CURA’s Unite To Cure at The Vatican. This podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Effect on Emotions Mindfulness helps me to stay with the poems. When I write a poem, I meditate. Every time that I work with a poem, I'm in a mindful state. In a class I was teaching, a woman told me she didn't have thirty minutes to exercise every day because she had two jobs. When I was driving home I was thinking how could a person not have thirty minutes in a day to create this micro progressive system so they could get better in life. So I came home, went to my meditation room for four hours and then wrote a poem. I went back to the class and read the poem and the poem was very moving to everyone. The women said that the poem moved her. (Jerzy shares the poem later in the episode). Thoughts on Breathing I created singularity of the brain within one repetition and there are six things that happen with one repetition. Inhale and then holding the breath, flexing the seven body parts, lifting, stretch, return, and exit. All six things repeat, and those six things create the mantra and that singularity and mindfulness that happens during this time creates thirteen minutes of exercise system when they exercise that way. They also feel like they meditate. So they are completely mindful during the thirty minutes. Suggested Resources Book: Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth Book: The Happy Body: The Simple Science of Nutrition, Exercise, and Relaxation by Jerzy Gregorek App: n/aBullying Story I was one of the shorter boys and of course the communism was there too, and communism was tough. When you are thirteen, you sense what parents are going through. They were persecuted and they have problems so you feel it. When I was around thirteen I was bullied, badly. I had to walk to the school, not a long walk, maybe a quarter of a mile. During this walk I would be caught by boys to get money, and they would hold me upside down by the ankles and shake me to get money from me. There was constant bullying. Final Words of Advice I think that we need to focus on goodness, the goodness in every way and fight for it. The goodness is getting more flexible or stronger or more mindful. The goodness is be kind in the world. The goodness is to love people as they are and give them the science of what to do to get better. Goodness is to choose hard choices verses easy choices in life to create micro progressive systems. Goodness is an amazing thing because goodness also creates self-control and self-discipline, delayed gratification and it is a sign of virtues. I think the stoics were right that virtues are more important than almost anything that we do in life. Related Episodes 388 Total Heart Health With Renowned Physician-Scientist Dr. Robert H. Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought after meditation teachers in the US. For nearly 50 years, Bob has taught transcendental meditation to many, many thousands of people. He’s the author of the New York Times bestseller “Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation” (https://stillnessbook.com) and the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, a global non-profit which has taught meditation to more than one million at risk adults and youth in 35 countries. When he saw Robert Kennedy speak at the Civic Auditorium he saw a path to creating a better world — and four days later, Kennedy was assassinated. Bob went to college from that point with a desire to become a Senator and change the world. He originally believed the way to change the world would be through legislation, but it wasn’t until he was exposed to the idea of transcendental meditation that he saw a true path to healing and change. Today I welcome Bob Roth to the podcast. He has been teaching transcendental meditation for the past 45 years, and currently serves as the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation. Bob is also the author of the 2018 New York Times Bestseller Strength in Stillness. I used to be so-so about meditation and had actually tried several different types – but none of them seemed to stick. When I found TM I loved how easy it was and how calm I felt when done mediatating. Tune in for a science-packed episode on why and how TM works, what the genius lounge is, and new, compelling reasons to get 20 minutes of meditation in, every day. Tips, and why TM makes a difference There are three different kinds of meditation and they yield different results — Bob Roth explains focused attention (Gamma brain waves), open monitoring (Theta brain waves), and self-transcending (Alpha 1 brain waves). Dropping the disorder from Post-Traumatic Stress. PTS leads to insomnia, hyperarousal, anxiety, and chronic depression. And it isn’t only generated through combat. TM reboots your prefrontal cortex. When stress activates the fight-or-flight response, your amygdala shuts off your prefrontal cortex. This means you can no longer access executive functions (planning ahead, judgment, sense of self, etc.) There are 1,440 minutes in a day — Try waking up 25 minutes early in the morning to get your mediation in. Access your genius lounge — Creativity isn’t just art, it is the ability to come up with creative solutions to seemingly intractable problems and it is the product of three distinct networks in the brain: the executive control center, the default mode network, and the salient network. As I grow older and meditate longer, it's given me a centeredness deep within that I haven't had before that connects me to the larger. There's something greater outside of me I found inside of myself. Thoughts on Breathing During transcendental meditation, breathing naturally gets less by itself. A spontaneous effect of the mind becoming more quiet is that the body becomes more quiet. There are other yoga practices which involve manipulating the breathing, Pranayama they call it, or breathing exercises. That's a way to go. Rather than from the mind to the breath, to go from the breath to settling the mind, so that's complimentary. These Yoga asanas and Yoga breathing are certainly complimentary to meditation. Fields Book: Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth App: TM.org (a place to get started with Transcendental Meditation) Bullying Story Colleagues of mine are working in the school system in the San Francisco Bay area and there there's a very famous school project to bring meditation to lower socioeconomic and high stress school systems there. There's one school system which has had a very high rate of violence, bullying, shooting, knifing all that kind of school violence. And they have what they call a quiet time program where the children practice meditation. It's a few minutes in the morning and a few minutes in the afternoon, they practice this meditation or they could do whatever else they want quietly, but most of them practice meditation. They've documented lower rates of, these violent behaviors in the school. So those kinds of violent crimes are much less and other classroom behaviors, much more harmonious. And studies have been published on this. So from a scientific point of view, I'm impressed by those kinds of projects. Free Gift Do you want to become more calm, relaxed, peaceful, and content? Dr. John Hagelin is a Harvard-trained quantum physicist, life-long educator and inventor and leading researcher on higher states of consciousness. He is the recipient of the prestigious Kilby award in physics, and is renowned for developing a highly successful grand unified field theory based on the Superstring. He is currently President, Maharishi University of Management and the Director of Maharishi University of Management’s Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy. A physicist by training, Hagelin was a researcher at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in the early 1980s. Hagelin stood as a candidate for President of the United States for the Natural Law Party. H Dr. Hagelin has been published extensively in the area of supersymmetric unified quantum field. He has appeared many times on news shows such as ABC’s Nightline, NBC’s Meet the Press and in major metropolitan newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. He is International Director of the Global Union of Scientists for Peace. Contact Info Email: President@mum.edu Most Influential Person Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Effect on Emotions Emotions are generally more joyful. A lot of the negative emotions of anxiety and depression are stress driven, so if you have a powerful stress buster, and meditation generally is meant to be a stressful. Remember, mindfulness based stress reduction is meant to be a stress buster. The very, very deep rest that comes with tm is an even more powerful stress buster. That completely changes the complexion of one's emotions. So also because meditation takes your awareness deep to very fine, fine levels of feeling one's emotions, tend to get more deeply appreciated. They become richer. You start to feel more like a fine artist who has a very deep kind of feeling for things. I didn't have that kind of refinement growing up. So that's a nice side effect of meditation. Thoughts on Breathing That's very interesting. In the TM technique, you don't really worry about your breath. You just follow the mind as it flows into this state of deep silence and inner unboundedness and your breath goes with it in the sense that as the mind gets deeply rested and settled, the breath gets deeply rested and settled. In the meditative state, the deepest points of meditation, I'd swear I wasn't breathing. Now, if you really pay attention to it, you'll notice that there is a puff of breath coming up the nose and a just a puff of breath coming out, but it doesn't even really get past your head and you're living on that. The requirement for oxygen goes way down. When the body is deeply rested and the cells inside the body aren't burning as much oxygen, aren't burning as much fuel. So a very deep state of rest will soften the breath and my breath is soft even an activity as a consequence of that regular practice. Suggested Resources Book: Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth Book: Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation by Norman E. Rosenthal Bullying Story I don't think I've been myself participating in bullying activity. I tend to always stand up for the underdog, whoever might be getting bullied to within the limits of my own strength and of course as a younger person, I was as vulnerable as anybody and I didn't have as much strength as I would've wanted to stand up more forcefully for people who were being misused. But as a physicist who is willing to talk about consciousness and is dedicated to researching consciousness, that makes me a little bit of an outlier in the physics community because physical scientists don't talk about consciousness. It's like, real men don't do ballet because for a physicist, we study the physical world, we're meat and potatoes people. If we can see it, we can touch it, we can taste it, it's real. This consciousness stuff, what is that, the tooth fairy, Santa Claus? It's a crazy point of view because physicists have consciousness. They should recognize that they are conscious and since consciousness doesn't exist within their physical equations, they tend to dismiss it as something that's not real. Actually, if they take their study of physics more deeply, they will discover that consciousness does fit into their physical equations. That is the very source of physics and every discipline for that matter, but be that as it may, having been a bit of an outlier, willing to talk about conscience, that there are plenty of physicists who have dismissed me. In fact, when I went from Stanford University Faculty to Maharishi University Faculty in 1983, people wrote me off. They thought that was kind of obviously going to be the end of me. It wasn't. I mean that was really the start of my fruitful research in physics and I had developed a doctoral program and got a national science foundation grant to do research in unified field theory. So my physics was fine, but even then, even though my physics was demonstrably better than it had been. I still, I think I probably was considered to be odd because I was into consciousness, into meditation and so forth. So definitely you can tell when you're at a social event or conference involving other physicists, you know, physicists can take an attitude towards you and they certainly did to me. I certainly felt that at times patronizing and so forth. So if you took that stuff seriously and it was certainly tempting for me at times, you know, to react to it, you know, to, to push back in a way that might not be productive, you know, get into an argument or toss an insult back to the other person. But, by about that time in my life, you know, I had been meditating for quite some years and I didn't find myself overthrown by it. I found the whole thing actually a little humorous. I was able to just smile quietly as all this was going on because it was going on. I know it was going on. I wasn't always invited to give the keynote speeches at conferences. Even if I did the keynote research behind it, you know, just a little bit of a second class treatment. It was as though I were an African American in the deep South 40 years ago. You just don't get the same treatment. I mean, you know, it just wasn't the nature of the culture at the time. And I felt a little bit like that. Anyway, yes, being grounded in yourself is really so key. It's really important to be in the driver's seat in the sense that you're not reactive because if you're reactive, if you're defensive, it's hard to know what you're going to say, but it's probably not going to serve you. Right? So being grounded in yourself, your big self, your inner silence, unshakably so. And that's something that's developed over years and years. That's a great antidote to overreacting and from ever getting thrown off of your feet. Relax and Breathe Summit Join me, Bruce Langford, on the Relax and Breathe Summit. World famous meditation teacher Bob Roth discusses whether Transcendental Meditation (TM) gives CEOs and Hollywood celebrities their creativity, demonstrates the difference between TM and mindfulness, and explains what a mantra is. His new book is Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation. Follow him on Twitter @MeditationBob.
We begin our conversation with Bob joking that, as a young boy growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, he knew he was a Democrat before he knew he was Jewish. Bob was deeply influenced by Robert “Bobby” Kennedy's position as an agent of change so much so that he began working with the Kennedy campaign early in his life; and considering that Bobby Kennedy was a hero figure for Bob, Kennedy's death greatly impacted him so much so that he continued the work of activism for collective change. When he was a young man, Bob embarked on a path into education, and as a self-professed skeptic, he hesitantly began a meditation practice at 18 years old although that was soon overwhelmed by the profound experience that transcendental meditation brought into his life. With the seeds of desire to educate children, Bob began teaching and educating inner-city youth and inmates about the benefits of meditation. He has continued along this path ever since. Bob and David Lynch began the nonprofit The David Lynch Foundation and have since offered scholarships to seek to teach over one million children the transformative value of meditation. The results of these interventions are astounding. To cite one example, within a year or two, following learning meditation some of the most underperforming schools in the bay area elevated the ranks to become among some of the higher performing schools in the area. Bob discusses three forms of meditation and provides a little background on each, and expands on the practice of Transcendental Meditation. Bob draws from ancient practice to modern neuroscience to back up his claims of how revolutionary a meditation practice can be for your life – and, as he frames it, it is more accessible than you may think. Bio: Bob Roth is one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation leaders in America. Over the past 45 years, Bob has taught Transcendental Meditation to many thousands of people and is the author of the forthcoming authoritative book on the subject, entitled "Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation", which will be published internationally by Simon & Schuster in February 2018. Bob Currently serves as the CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity which has brought meditation to over 500,000 inner-city youth in underserved schools in 35 countries, to veterans and their families who suffer from post-traumatic stress, and women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Bob also directs the Center for Leadership Performance, another nonprofit, which is bringing meditation to Fortune 100 companies, government organizations, and nonprofit charities. Bob is the host of the SiriusXM radio show, "Success Without Stress" and has spoken about meditation to industry leaders at such gatherings as Google Zeitgeist, Aspen Ideas Festival, Aspen Brain Conference, Wisdom2.0, and Summit. https://www.davidlynchfoundation.org Learn more about this project at: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com Song of the week: Jeff Price https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/mississippi-lights/1393868655

Resources Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth News Roundup Net neutrality is officially gone The FCC’s repeal of the 2015 net neutrality rules went into effect yesterday, Monday June 11th. The Hill predicts that you won’t see any immediate changes to internet speeds or new paid prioritization schemes, but concludes that that’s only because carriers are going to be on their best behavior as the repeal winds its ways through the courts and Congress continues to push for legislation. The status of Congressional Review Act proposals are still very uncertain as proponents have been unable to secure enough Republican votes. Ex-Senate intelligence aide charged for FBI leaks The DOJ has charged James Wolfe, who for nearly 30 years served as the Senate Intelligence Committee’s Director of Security, for leaking FBI intelligence to four reporters, including a New York Times reporter, Ali Watkins, with whom he had a 3 year relationship. Wolf is alleged to have used encrypted messaging apps to leak the info to reporters. Amidst uncertainty regarding Chinese device makers, Senator Warner pressures Google and Twitter Senator Mark Warner is seeking information from Google and Twitter about their relationships with Chinese phone makers like Huawei and ZTE. Just to give you some background here, the Commerce Department has already fined ZTE $1.19 billion for dealing with Iran and North Korea in violation of trade agreements that China had with the U.S. But on Squawkbox last Thursday, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross announced a fresh batch of $1 billion in sanctions against ZTE for misleading regulators and failing to discipline employees. ZTE has also had to put $400 million in escrow in case they violate the trade agreement again. Ouch. But Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer says the sanctions don’t go far enough. So he and Senator Tom Cotton introduced a bipartisan amendment to the National Defense Authoprization Act (NDAA) to restore additional sanctions including the original ban against government agencies buying or leasing from ZTE or Huawei, which is also caught in the cross-hair of all this. And Democratic Senator Mark Warner is also pressuring Twitter and Google to provide information on how they work with Chinese phone makers. Facebook announced last week that it had granted Huawei and other Chinese phone makers access to user data, opening up a brand new can of worms against the social media giant amidst the ongoing Cambridge Analytica fiasco. U.S . sanctions firms linked to Russia The U.S. Treasury Department has prohibited 5 Russian firms and 3 Russian nationals from doing business in the U.S. because they allegedly helped the Kremlin conduct cyber attacks. Just a few days ago, President Trump called for Russia’s readmittance to the G-7. In addition, security experts at Cisco are warning that Russian hacks of home routers is more widespread than we initially thought. Washington State is suing Google/Facebook for political ads Washington State is suing Google and Facebook for allegedly failing to disclose who bought political election ads. Their Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, wants access to names, addresses, and the cost of political ads sold. Google, Facebook and Twitter have each announced new policies for political ad disclosures.
