Will the White Sox make it to 100 losses? SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, ponder the odds of making the magic number, as the Sox press onward toward the famed century mark. The duo also delve fundamentally into fundamentals, starting with the lack thereof on the part of Oscar Colás and on to the lack thereof on the part of most of the White Sox, with Will reporting on how hard he sees other major league players working — players on good teams — compared to the visible (lack of) work ethic of the White Sox and other underachieving teams. Gee, could it be the dysfunction of the whole Sox organization leads to dysfunction on the field? After a look into all the categories of hitting, fielding and pitching where the White Sox are at or near the bottom of the majors, it's on to questions of the future, including what will be Chris Getz's first big decision (well, first except for where to plant his lips on Jerry Reinsdorf's keister, be it a new spot of the one he's used for the last seven years): Whether to pick up Tim Anderson's 2024 option. Both think TA wants out, so would it be better to decline the option, or take it and try to trade him? Of course, any look into the future of the White Sox wouldn't be complete without contemplating how many years (decades?) it might be before the team could become competitive — even competitive in the AAAL Central. As a sort of test podcast and video feed, we switched over to a new format for the Sox Populi family of programs, to considerable success in spite of Darren Black losing his camera for a sec and Brett Ballantini not knowing where to look to engage with viewers. But that backstage nonsense aside, Darren and Brett sat down to talk about the hot (?) Charlotte Knights, who have seen some breakout performances early and, let's face it, simply have an actual pitching rotation this year. Lenyn Sosa mania! SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and current downtown Chicago correspondent, Will, were just settling in for their first podcast of the regular season when the White Sox announced that Eloy Jiménez is headed to the IL with a theoretically minor hamstring issue. Not good. On the good side, the praise is for the Cuban contingent, especially Luis Robert Jr.'s incredible fielding and Yoán Moncada's hot start at the plate, with plenty left over for the start of Oscar Colás' White Sox career and the (at least temporary) resurgence of Yasmani Grandal's bat, if not his defense. Further praise goes to Dylan Cease for his great first start (the podcast was recorded before No. 2), with reserved kudos for the other starting pitchers in Houston, who took a whole lot of pitches to get through a depleted Astros lineup, with FIP showing Lance Lynn and the new guy getting a whole lot of luck and Lucas Giolito getting ill-treated by fortune. That, of course, doesn't include whatever happened to Michael Kopech on Monday, which both agreed could not just have been a matter of pitch-tipping. As for the bullpen and its 9.90 ERA, both agreed the best reliever far and away in the young season has been Hanser Alberto, though Will disagreed that Hanser should be handed the closer's job, at least until Liam Hendriks is back. Naytheless, they discuss numerous key points: Can the Kansas City Royals, sitting at 14-2 in the Cactus League, continue the pace and win 140 games this season? Should you bet the over or the under? Isn't it nice the World Baseball Classic provides March games where teams are really trying to win, not just keep from getting hurt? A couple of games into the exhibition season, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and, for a few months, downtown Chicago correspondent, Will, start a cast of bits and pieces by looking at the impact of the new rules on games so far. Which is to say, so far, really not all that much. There have been a few cases of pitch-clock violations, one ending a game, but only one in a White Sox game, and that minor. Though it's too early to tell, Steve Stone thinks the clock will work to the advantage of pitchers, even though it gives them less time to recover from the strain of the previous pitch — a point worthy of discussion. There has not been a surge in stolen bases resulting from the limit on pickoff attempts, or from the slightly larger bases — though maybe players are taking it easy on that front pending being more stretched out, and in one White Sox case, the goal of eliminating over-slides went for naught (yes, that was you, Romy). On one weighty matter, the duo discuss the poundage of Lance Lynn (yuck!) and Eloy Jiménez (nice!). On another, they shudder at comments to the media made by Mike Clevinger (when the hell will MLB finally deal with him?) and Tim Anderson, who was waaay too sensitive about past criticism. As for what happened in games, two hits by Oscar Colás were praised, and the continued appalling lack of defensive fundamentals by the Sox scorned — pop-ups in front of the plate aren't really supposed to be a challenge beyond T-ball, guys. Mabrey hurt her right knee nearly 2 minutes into the game when she stole a ball and was racing down the court. She was fouled and went to the floor and immediately grabbed her knee. Mabrey has played 135 games in her career which started at Virginia Tech for the first two seasons before she came to Notre Dame where her two older sisters starred. She started 18 games this season and 125 in her career. She's averaged 10.9 points and 2.4 assists over the years. NCAAFB – Michigan Stadium tunnel will widen without portable seating Michigan Stadium’s tunnel will be a little wider next season. The school confirmed Monday that it will remove a portable section of seats from the front of the tunnel to give players, coaches and staff members more room to enter and exit the football field. A total of 45 portable seats will be lost and enough standing-room only tickets are expected to be added in the stadium to keep its capacity at 107,601. Previously, fans were close enough to touch coaches and players as one did last season with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker. That was well before the postgame altercation between Spartans and Wolverines players that led to suspensions and criminal charges. NCAABKB – Boilers back on top of Men's poll; Texas teams shut out in women's rankings Purdue is back at No. 1 in the AP Top 25. Alabama is right behind the Boilermakers. Purdue returned to the top spot in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll, moving up two spots after Houston's loss to Temple. The Boilermakers received 39 first-place votes after a volatile week where just two teams kept the same spot from a week ago. Alabama climbed two spots to No. 2, its highest ranking since reaching No. 1 in 2002-03. Houston, Tennessee and Kansas State round out the top five.  For the first time in the 47-year history of The Associated Press women's basketball poll no team from Texas is in the Top 25. That ends a 835-week run dating to the first poll in 1976. South Carolina remained a unanimous No. 1. The Gamecocks were followed by Ohio State, Stanford, LSU and UConn to round out the top five. Khachanov will face either No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or unseeded Jiri Lehecka for a berth in the final at Melbourne Park. Khachanov was leading 7-6 (5), 6-3, 3-0 when Korda retired from the match Tuesday. The 22-year-old American had received treatment on his wrist from a trainer during the second set. Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina reached the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Rybakina will face Jessica Pegula or Victoria Azarenka next. MLB – Eloy Jiménez preparing to play outfield with White Sox It looks as if Chicago White Sox slugger Eloy Jiménez could spend a lot of time at designated hitter this year. Jiménez himself has other plans. The 26-year-old Jiménez says he is preparing to play more games in the outfield, especially in right after Chicago signed Andrew Benintendi to a $75 million, five-year contract. The White Sox also have Luis Robert in center, to go along with Gavin Sheets and prized prospect Oscar Colás in the mix in right. Jiménez says he wants to play in the outfield. MLB – Trey Mancini planning to move around with Chicago Cubs Trey Mancini is planning to move around with the Chicago Cubs. He could see time at designated hitter, first base and the corner outfield spots after finalizing a two-year contract that could be worth up to $21 million. Mancini was in the mix for Team Italy for the World Baseball Classic, but he says he has decided to stay in Cubs camp so he can spend time with his new teammates. First baseman Eric Hosmer finalized his deal with Chicago on Jan. 13. Hosmer bats from the left side and Mancini is a right-handed hitter, so the starter might depend on the pitching matchup, and there also is the DH role. Or Mancini could spell Ian Happ or Seiya Suzuki in the outfield. NCAAWBKB – Notre Dame’s Dara Mabrey out for season with torn ACL Notre Dame guard Dara Mabrey announced on social media that she tore her ACL, ending her college career with the seventh-ranked Irish. Mabrey hurt her right knee nearly 2 minutes into the game when she stole a ball and was racing down the court. She was fouled and went to the floor and immediately grabbed her knee. Mabrey has played 135 games in her career which started at Virginia Tech for the first two seasons before she came to Notre Dame where her two older sisters starred. She started 18 games this season and 125 in her career. She’s averaged 10.9 points and 2.4 assists over the years. NCAAFB – Michigan Stadium tunnel will widen without portable seating Michigan Stadium’s tunnel will be a little wider next season. The school confirmed Monday that it will remove a portable section of seats from the front of the tunnel to give players, coaches and staff members more room to enter and exit the football field. A total of 45 portable seats will be lost and enough standing-room only tickets are expected to be added in the stadium to keep its capacity at 107,601. Previously, fans were close enough to touch coaches and players as one did last season with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker. He could see time at designated hitter, first base and the corner outfield spots after finalizing a two-year contract that could be worth up to $21 million. Mancini was in the mix for Team Italy for the World Baseball Classic, but he says he has decided to stay in Cubs camp so he can spend time with his new teammates. First baseman Eric Hosmer finalized his deal with Chicago on Jan. 13. Mabrey hurt her right knee nearly 2 minutes into the game when she stole a ball and was racing down the court. She was fouled and went to the floor and immediately grabbed her knee. Mabrey has played 135 games in her career which started at Virginia Tech for the first two seasons before she came to Notre Dame where her two older sisters starred. NCAAFB – Michigan Stadium tunnel will widen without portable seating Michigan Stadium’s tunnel will be a little wider next season. The school confirmed Monday that it will remove a portable section of seats from the front of the tunnel to give players, coaches and staff members more room to enter and exit the football field. A total of 45 portable seats will be lost and enough standing-room only tickets are expected to be added in the stadium to keep its capacity at 107,601. Previously, fans were close enough to touch coaches and players as one did last season with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker. He could see time at designated hitter, first base and the corner outfield spots after finalizing a two-year contract that could be worth up to $21 million. Mancini was in the mix for Team Italy for the World Baseball Classic, but he says he has decided to stay in Cubs camp so he can spend time with his new teammates. First baseman Eric Hosmer finalized his deal with Chicago on Jan. 13. Hosmer bats from the left side and Mancini is a right-handed hitter, so the starter might depend on the pitching matchup, and there also is the DH role. NCAAWBKB – Notre Dame’s Dara Mabrey out for season with torn ACL Notre Dame guard Dara Mabrey announced on social media that she tore her ACL, ending her college career with the seventh-ranked Irish. Mabrey hurt her right knee nearly 2 minutes into the game when she stole a ball and was racing down the court. She was fouled and went to the floor and immediately grabbed her knee. Mabrey has played 135 games in her career which started at Virginia Tech for the first two seasons before she came to Notre Dame where her two older sisters starred. She started 18 games this season and 125 in her career. She's averaged 10.9 points and 2.4 assists over the years. NCAAFB – Michigan Stadium tunnel will widen without portable seating Michigan Stadium’s tunnel will be a little wider next season. The school confirmed Monday that it will remove a portable section of seats from the front of the tunnel to give players, coaches and staff members more room to enter and exit the football field. A total of 45 portable seats will be lost and enough standing-room only tickets are expected to be added in the stadium to keep its capacity at 107,601. Previously, fans were close enough to touch coaches and players as one did last season with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker. MLB – Eloy Jiménez preparing to play outfield with White Sox It looks as if Chicago White Sox slugger Eloy Jiménez could spend a lot of time at designated hitter this year. Jiménez himself has other plans. The 26-year-old Jiménez says he is preparing to play more games in the outfield, especially in right after Chicago signed Andrew Benintendi to a $75 million, five-year contract. The White Sox also have Luis Robert in center, to go along with Gavin Sheets and prized prospect Oscar Colás in the mix in right. Jiménez says he wants to play in the outfield. MLB – Trey Mancini planning to move around with Chicago Cubs Trey Mancini is planning to move around with the Chicago Cubs. He could see time at designated hitter, first base and the corner outfield spots after finalizing a two-year contract that could be worth up to $21 million. Mancini was in the mix for Team Italy for the World Baseball Classic, but he says he has decided to stay in Cubs camp so he can spend time with his new teammates. First baseman Eric Hosmer finalized his deal with Chicago on Jan. 13. Hosmer bats from the left side and Mancini is a right-handed hitter, so the starter might depend on the pitching matchup, and there also is the DH role. NCAAWBKB – Notre Dame’s Dara Mabrey out for season with torn ACL Notre Dame guard Dara Mabrey announced on social media that she tore her ACL, ending her college career with the seventh-ranked Irish. Mabrey hurt her right knee nearly 2 minutes into the game when she stole a ball and was racing down the court. She was fouled and went to the floor and immediately grabbed her knee. Mabrey has played 135 games in her career which started at Virginia Tech for the first two seasons before she came to Notre Dame where her two older sisters starred. She started 18 games this season and 125 in her career. She’s averaged 10.9 points and 2.4 assists over the years. NCAAFB – Michigan Stadium tunnel will widen without portable seating Michigan Stadium’s tunnel will be a little wider next season. The school confirmed Monday that it will remove a portable section of seats from the front of the tunnel to give players, coaches and staff members more room to enter and exit the football field. A total of 45 portable seats will be lost and enough standing-room only tickets are expected to be added in the stadium to keep its capacity at 107,601. Previously, fans were close enough to touch coaches and players as one did last season with Michigan State’s Mel Tucker. Mancini was in the mix for Team Italy for the World Baseball Classic, but he says he has decided to stay in Cubs camp so he can spend time with his new teammates. First baseman Eric Hosmer finalized his deal with Chicago on Jan. 13. If a tree falls in a forest of deals at the Winter Meetings, but no one from the White Sox was there to hear it, did it really make a sound? To wrap up the year, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, delve into the biggest White Sox free agent contract ever, as the team strives mightily once again to attract all the COVID it can, by following up the Mike Clevinger signing with that of Andrew Benintendi. The duo agree that, if nothing else, the newest member of the team will provide fans with their biggest bang for the buck in jersey lettering thanks to his 10-letter last name, which may well be the longest on the Sox until Colson Montgomery makes the bigs. As for baseball, they agree it's a nice signing, if a tad expensive, but just a small step on the way to putting the more than 50 million bucks saved via players no longer on the payroll to useful work. What more is needed, you ask? How about a cheap, good defensive outfielder to fill in until Oscar Colás is ready for the majors later in the season, one who could play center during the inevitable Luis Robert injury stints, one available on a one-year contract and familiar with the GuRF? (Hint: One with the initials AE fits that description, although the apparently-preferred BH could also do the trick.) As for the rather huge gap at second base, they recommend a trade with San Diego, sending Liam Hendriks west because you don't need a closer if you're never ahead late, throwing in another player or two, and getting one of the Padres' many extra middle infielders. Will likes some guy named Tatís, but Leigh suggests Jake Cronenworth, even though his 11-letter monicker would knock Benintendi back to second in last name length.
