Orlando City now knows its opponent for the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Lions will welcome the Columbus Crew into the purple palace in Parramore on Saturday, Nov. 25 for a 5:30 p.m. match. The series this year has been extremely competitive, with Orlando going 1-0-1 in the two regular-season meetings but needing to rally from two goals down both times to secure a result. We look at how these teams got to this point, dive into some of the key players for Columbus, and discuss the offensive prowess the Crew have shown in 2023. These were two of the best teams in the conference all season and now they'll go toe-to-toe with a berth in the conference final on the line. It should be a great match. We also looked at the various Orlando City players who will be with their national teams during the current international break. Hopefully they all come home healthy and inspired to show what they can do for their club after serving their countries. The mailbagbox was chock full again this week! Big thanks to everyone who submitted questinos, including some about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Facundo Torres' future in Orlando (or elsewhere), what one parent should tell his child about OCSC supporters' goal kick chant, and much more. In this episode, we explore how economic issues are often talked about in ways that minimize the needs of those who may not have the means to withstand recessions, contractions, or other economic downturns. This issue takes on greater urgency in an era of trying to control inflation… and deal with recent regional bank failures. My guest is Lynn Parramore, writer and researcher with the Institute for New Economic Thinking.

Chef Nick Aikens has spent much of his life in the kitchen with his family. He got his start working for his aunt in 1952. Since then, he’s served meals to Muhammad Ali and Elvis Presely, but, above all, Aikens says he is “cooking for the people.” He now runs his own restaurant with his wife and his daughter. Over the last 20 years, Nikki’sPlace has become a staple of Orlando’s Parramore neighborhood. Aikens started the restaurant in 1999, naming it after his daughter Shannea “Nikki” Akins, who will eventually take over the business. The restaurant’s standing in the community is a fact that is not lost Aikens. He and his daughter know the business would not be around without their customers, especially through the hard times brought on by the pandemic. They say people regularly stop by for a meal, saying they are coming in just to make sure their business can stay open. Nick and Shannea join us to talk about what makes their soul different from what people might expect and how they are giving back to the customers who help keep them going.
Erik Young reflects on his journey as an African American male, growing up in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the US, Parramore in Orlando, FL, to moving to Silicon Valley to become the CEO and Co-founder of Audios. Erik internalized encouragement from his father, who himself had an extensive criminal record due to systemic circumstances, but implored Erik to use his potential to pursue higher education. Through determination, grit, education, street smarts, and coping with racism and barriers, he pursued a career in engineering and co-founded Audios, the first truly cableless loudspeaker for indoor and outdoor venues and event spaces. He shares his strategies for never losing hope in humanity. Click to invest in this round of funding.
Neal Crosier has been dealing with a lot of change in the last couple of years. He and his wife moved to Central Florida from Chicago for the weather, unsurprisingly. Then, in 2017, the couple opened their business, Popcorn Junkie, in the heart of Orlando’s Parramore neighborhood, an historically black and underserved community. Since opening up their store, Parramore has gone through a lot of changes of its own. More affordable housing has moved into the area, along with restaurants and businesses. At the same time, Crosier and his wife have been working to preserve the history of the area, while continuing to build it up. Then, the Covid-19 Pandemic hit and, like so many other businesses, Crosier was forced to pivot and adapt his business model to stay open. Amid that, the nation has seen a sweeping push for racial justice and equality, bringing a new attention to Black-owned businesses and encouraging an effort to support them. Neal Crosier shares his story with the hosts of Florida Foodie, explaining how Popcorn Junkie came to life and what’s changed for him during the pademic. He also talks about how he is supporting other people who want to start their own businesses. Please, follow our hosts on social media. You can find Candace Campos, on Twitter and Facebook. Lisa Bell is also on Facebook and Twitter and you can check out Lisa’s children’s books, “Norman the Watchful Gnome.”

Join The Gist of Freedom live on location, UNESCO Cnference with attorney Harvey Herman, as we discuss attorney Activist, Virgil D. Hawkins and visit his monument in Florida. In 1949, Civil Rights Activist, Attorney Virgil D. Hawkins, as a student applied to the University of Florida (UF) law school but was denied entry because of his race. He was urged to attend law school outside Florida but refused and sued the state, which responded by establishing a law school at FAMU. While he was admitted to FAMU’s law school, Hawkins continued his fight for acceptance at the University of Florida. Although he was unsuccessful, Hawkins’ long-fought battle led to the ultimate desegregation of the University of Florida. Hawkins received his law degree from the New England College of Law more than 20 years after applying to UF. The FAMU College of Law was founded in 1949 on the main campus in Tallahassee. After graduating 57 lawyers, the law school was closed by the state of Florida in 1968. The Florida Legislature voted to reopen the law school in 2000 and Orlando was selected as the location. The reestablished FAMU College of Law opened its doors in 2002 and is now housed in a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Orlando’s Parramore neighborhood.
