Relooted, an African-developed game about black people heisting museums for artifacts to return them to the cultures from which they came, released to a resounding 57 players on Steam. Despite being an utter failure for “modern audiences,” Kotaku and PC Gamer are covering the game as if it's actually popular. We discuss the situation along with TheGamer's complaints about Overwatch's new female hero design, RuneScape going woke, and the delay of the third Horizon game due to a spinoff no one asked for.

Photo by Aneta Pawlik on Unsplash Published 26 January 2026 e540 with Michael, Andy and Michael – Stories and discussion on mobile controllers, AI playing Anchorhead, Zork & Roller Coaster Tycoon, an isometric NYC, human artistic creativity and a whole lot more. Michael, Andy and Michael get things clicking with some mobile controllers. Starting with one of Andy's latest technology acquisitions, the team enjoys hearing about Andy's experience with the MCON. And they especially like the “saucer separation” functionality. The featured image from Unsplash was selected because there were very few TNG images – if you want to see the saucer separation that inspired this week's show title, have a look at the YouTube video below. After discussing the Anbernic controller, which has some interesting features like a screen and heart rate monitoring, the team moves forward with AI. Claude features in a couple of the stories – first with an article from Fernando Borretti who details how he hooked Claude into the text based adventure Anchorhead. The co-hosts have been intrigued by this kind of thing for years, and were reminded of the recent open sourcing of Zork. Ramp Labs also used Claude with Roller Coaster Tycoon, which struck the team as a great way to run optimization routines across a multitude of data points that make us the game. Next up was a story about using AI to create a SimCity-style rendition of New York City (New York City!) with astounding detail. There were a couple of jumping off points of note from this story – Nvidia's Omniverse digital twin, traffic optimization routines and another being the language in SimCity called Simlish – and a translator is included below for the listeners to enjoy. After all the news on AI – it is refreshing though unsurprising that Hermès selected human creativity, complete with the imperfections that make the artwork more real. Wrapping up the episode, the team closes with Netflix's foray into social engagement. What game would you like to have AI set up to play? Have your bots

The podcast eats itself! The Back Page finally dedicates a whole episode to its namesake. How do back page jokes go wrong? And what about the less frequent times when they go well? Returning guest Phil Savage, Global Editor-in-Chief of PC Gamer, helps us examine the creation of these gags. There's also a 20-minute bit on ARC Raiders near the start if that's your sort of thing. This week's music is from the Yakuza 0 soundtrack by Hidenori Shoji. Hosted on Acast. Online game design veteran Raph Koster recently posted a new piece about how he thinks about game design, which got us talking about the history of online multiplayer, so then we figured, why not talk about that subject in a (slightly) more comprehensive way on this podcast? So that's what we did this week, dipping into topics like pre-TCP/IP network gaming, the early video game consoles' various half-baked online solutions, how Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies were both way ahead of their time, how much the infrastructure has evolved for facilitating multiplayer -- and how expected it is as a feature these days -- and plenty more.Koster's new piece: https://www.raphkoster.com/2025/11/03/game-design-is-simple-actually/PC Gamer's Everquest history: https://www.pcgamer.com/breaking-the-internet-the-story-of-everquest-the-mmo-that-changed-everything/Dreamcast online functionality and Sega.net history (with links to similar pages for PS2, GameCube etc. at the bottom): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast_online_functionality Support the Pod! Games journalist and PC Gamer editor Jody Macgregor joins Liz and Ben to take control of an oddly Pythonesque Rincewind and discuss the 1995 graphic adventure game Discworld from Teeny Weeny Games and Perfect 10 Productions. A nefarious secret society has summoned a dragon in Ankh-Morpork! It's a suspiciously familiar plot, and of course the only one who can save the city is...Rincewind? This wizard might not know any spells, but he's decidedly snarky and cunning - and accompanied by an inventory window on legs. Together, they'll use petty theft, time travel and logic that would put Rube Goldberg to shame to rid the city of this scaly threat forever...twice! Terry Pratchett was famously an early adopter of computers, and a devoted video game player, so its no surprise that there were other Discworld videogames before...er...Discworld. But this 1995 point-and-click graphic adventure game is by far the most well known and beloved of the lot - despite also being infamous for its difficulty, in a genre known for obscure puzzles with illogical solutions! The player controls a version of Rincewind voiced by Eric Idle, who must travel back and forth all over Ankh-Morpork (and to the edge of the Disc) to collect a variety of random objects to save the city. The plot is loosely based on Guards! Guards!, with some flavour from Moving Pictures and a cast drawn from the early wizards novels. It was followed by two more games from the same team: Discworld II: Missing, Presumed...?!, and Discworld Noir, each with quite different visual styles, and the latter with a brand new protagonist. Sadly, all three are “abandonware” - not only unavailable, but languishing in copyright limbo, with no-one sure enough who currently has the rights to get them published again. Have you had a chance to play Discworld? What do you think of this version of Rincewind, Ankh-Morpork and the Disc? Would you like to hear us do episodes about the two other adventure games? And what other adventure games would you recommend for folks looking for a similar vibe? What other kinds of Discworld videogame would you like to see? Click on Pratchat and choose the question mark icon to join our online conversation, using the hashtag #Pratchat89. Guest Jody Macgregor (he/him) is a journalist who started out writing about music, but now writes mostly about videogames. He's been writing for PC Gamer for about a decade, and is currently the magazine's weekend and Australian editor. You can find out more about him, and read his most recent reviews and articles, by looking up his profile at pcgamer.com. You can find episode notes and errata on our web site. Next month we're catching a train - the Ankh-Morpork Scenic Railway, that is - as we read Terry Pratchett's penultimate Discworld novel, Raising Steam! Send us your questions via email (chat@pratchatpodcast.com), or get on board via your local social media platform using the hashtag #Pratchat90.
In Stars and Time is a time loop RPG from insertdisc5, that follows a ragtag found-family of adventurers, at the very end of their long quest to defeat The King. You play as Siffrin, the party's rogue, as they try to piece together why they find themselves stuck living out the same day over and over again. The writing is heartfelt and at times heartbreaking, the characters are charming, and the game features a strangely addictive system for turn-based combat. Thank you for tuning in to episode 54!! In this episode, Kate and Emily are joined by special guest Rachel Watts, to talk about this fascinating time loop experience. But before they dive into the game, the three have lots of guinea pig and indie game related topics to discuss! Neuralink plans to begin another US clinical trial in October, using the implant to translate thoughts into text. The study will be held through an FDA investigational device exemption. The idea is to help people with speech impairments communicate through thought. In other news, a new hypercar has dethroned Bugatti's record for the fastest production car, and unsurprisingly, it's an electric vehicle. During a livestream at the Automotive Testing Papenburg testing site in Germany, the YangWang U9 Extreme hit a facemelting top speed of around 308.33 mph. And, the latest update in the convoluted lawsuit between Subnautica's developer, Unknown Worlds, and its parent company, Krafton, represents a complete 180 with one of the case's key claims. According to a PC Gamer report, Krafton said that "documents relating to the readiness of the game were irrelevant to the termination" of Unknown Worlds' leadership, which was one of the main disagreements that led to the legal action in the first place.
