Dr. Charles LeBaron Interview Episode 536

Matt Crawford speaks with former CDC Epidemiologist Dr. Charles LeBaron about his book, Greed to Do Good: The Untold Story of CDC's Disastrous War on Opioids: A CDC Physician's Personal Account.  When the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that overdose deaths had quadrupled in ten years, hitting a record high of 90,000 in 2020, opioid researchers around the country expressed shock with terms such as “huge” and “unprecedented.” They might have reserved a few adjectives since overdose deaths grew to 100,000 in 2021 and 110,000 in 2022. Each year there are now twice as many deaths from overdoses as from breast cancer or colon cancer and more deaths than from automobiles and firearms combined. In the past two decades, a million Americans have died of overdoses. In the next decade, at the current epidemic rate, a million more are projected to perish. In a series of vividly personal vignettes, this book recounts the untold story of how CDC, the federal organization charged with controlling epidemics, implemented a misguided strategy that helped detonate an opioid overdose explosion. No other book has given a similar frontline, insider glimpse into the world's premier public health agency. To provide a unique, first-person perspective on the human consequences, the author chronicles his experiences as a physician prescribing opioids in Appalachia and treating gang members in prison attacks, as well as his own near-death ordeal as a patient receiving high-dose opioids for severe pain. Drawing on twenty-eight years as a CDC epidemic control specialist, Dr. LeBaron concludes that we do have the means to emerge from the cruel, lethal paradoxes of this self-inflicted opioid war—which is really a war upon ourselves.

This unique work captures both the subjective experience of a particular kind of psychosis, and the analytic interpretation of that experience. "He graphically portrays both the feel and the logic of a psychotic episode foreshadowed by his separation from college and from law school and ultimately precipitated by the loss of his beloved grandfather. His search for his identity led him to the Navajo reservation which was 'ideal for the nurturance of my psychosis.' He gives testimony to the help he received from two outstanding psychoanalysts who worked with him to unpack and weave together the effects of childhood events and fantasies on his adult personality. In this episode I speak with a friend of mine, Kirsten Ellis, about her personal and painful experience fleeing the Pacific Palisades fire (PPF). Kirsten has spent her entire life in the  beautiful community of the Palisades and is now trying to come to terms with that fact that it was completely decimated and no longer exists as she knew it.We also explore the mindset of native Californian's like Kirsten who have been facing the threat of fire their entire lives, because people who don't live in CA don't understand why us "crazy" people do. In addition, we broke down what went well and what was problematic with evacuations and even give some tips on preparing for the possibility of fires if you live in an area that is at risk.  I invited Kirsten to share her story on the podcast because I wanted to hear her account of the PP Fire, so that she can begin to make some sense out of all of it and process the magnitude of emotions she is experiencing as a result of it. It really takes a lot of courage to come on the podcast to share a story as painful as this one so kudos to Kirsten for her willingness to do that! Click on the platform of your choice to listen to the latest podcast episode, follow the podcast, and write a review so we can spread the news and reach more people! Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-power-of-community-collaboration-in-sb-podcast/id1548758744Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/4RWxW7Ni1EHTAywriOwY9z?si=d9c181834529414dGoogle Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/search/The%20Brain%20BS%20PodcastAmazon Music https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/09208f98-6c21-4fea-abbf-14a495cabd09/the-brain-bs-podcast-learning-to-live-consciouslyI Heart Radiohttps://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-the-brain-bs-podcast-learn-76710324/Pandorahttps://www.pandora.com/podcast/the-brain-bs-podcast-learning-to-live-consciously/PC:60845It is so beneficial when we speak our truth to those around us, so that we can all support one another. That is the only way we are able to experience the amazing power of community and collaboration!  If you want to get in touch with me or connect to get creative about a collaboration, click on the link below.https://www.thebrainbs.com/

Chapter 1: Summary of Your Brain On Porn"Your Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction" by Gary Wilson explores the impact of internet pornography on the brain and behavior. Wilson discusses how easy access to pornography can lead to addictive behaviors and negatively affect relationships, mental health, and sexual function. The book examines scientific research on the brain's reward system, how pornography can hijack this system, and the neurochemical changes that occur with excessive consumption. Wilson argues that the brain's adaptation to high levels of stimulation from pornography can desensitize users, leading to a diminished experience of pleasure and increased cravings.Wilson also addresses societal attitudes towards pornography, drawing attention to its normalization and widespread use. He emphasizes the need for awareness about its potential harms and encourages readers to consider the consequences of excessive consumption. The book includes testimonials and suggests strategies for recovery, emphasizing the importance of understanding the psychological and physiological effects of pornography use.Overall, "Your Brain on Porn" serves as a cautionary account of how digital exposure to pornography can reshape our understanding of sexuality, intimacy, and personal health.Chapter 2: The Theme of Your Brain On Porn"Your Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction" by Gary Wilson explores the impact of internet pornography on the brain, relationships, and society at large. Below are key plot points, character development, and thematic ideas integral to the book. Key Plot Points1. Introduction to the Science of Addiction:- The book lays the groundwork by explaining how addiction works in the brain, particularly focusing on the neurological pathways affected by excessive use of pornography.2. Neuroplasticity:- The author introduces the concept of neuroplasticity, explaining how the brain changes in response to stimuli, including sexual arousal from porn, leading to potential addiction.4. Withdrawal Symptoms:- Wilson details withdrawal symptoms that users experience when trying to quit porn, which include anxiety, depression, and sexual dysfunction.5. Personal Accounts and Testimonials:- The book shares various testimonials from individuals who describe their struggles with porn addiction, how it has affected their lives, and their journeys toward recovery.6. Path to Recovery:- Wilson outlines a recovery process, providing insights and strategies for those looking to break free from porn addiction, including community support and behavioral changes.7. Cultural and Societal Implications:- The societal effects of porn consumption are examined, including its impact on relationships, sexual norms, and expectations. Character DevelopmentWhile "Your Brain on Porn" is non-fiction and does not have traditional character development, it does effectively present various "characters" through testimonials and case studies. These characters are individuals affected by porn addiction, showcasing a range of backgrounds, experiences, and the transformative journeys they undergo as they confront their issues.1. The Addict: Represented through various accounts, these individuals initially engage with porn to fulfill desires but later find themselves trapped in cycles of addiction. We sit down for a discussion about the futility of rationalism, by way of William James' Varieties of Religious Experience. We start with the question of utopias, and try to diagnose why, if they're doomed to fail, it's still worth trying to create them, and then move on to the question of the scientific project - which seems to be an attempt to create a rationalist utopia. James' take on mystical experiences - that they're nearly universally accessible, though rarely long dwelt in - seems to suggest that there is something about the tremulous experience of being alive that will leave us with the feeling of being part of something larger than ourselves no matter how rational we get. So, then, if we can never escape the mystical experience, is it worth trying? And if it is, and we take the project of science to be worthwhile, where does the mystic live? Despite a mysterious knife attack and various authoritarian elements (such as “mail boxes” for reporting spies and subversives), he loved the country. Over the next four decades, he made numerous trips back, witnessing and reporting on Taiwan's transformation from one party rule to an admirable democracy. The Island is not Mark's first Taiwan book – earlier works include ones on Buddhist charity Tzu Chi and the National Palace Museum – so he brings both depth and breadth to his entertaining look at the country.

Analyzed by Lacan: A Personal Account (Bloomsbury, 2023) brings together the first English translations of Why Lacan, Betty Milan's memoir of her analysis with Lacan in the 1970s, and her play, Goodbye Doctor, inspired by her experience. Why Lacan provides a unique and valuable perspective on how Lacan worked as psychoanalyst as well as his approach to psychoanalytic theory. Milan's testimony shows that Lacan's method of working was based on the idea that the traditional way of interpreting provoked resistance. Prior to Why Lacan, Milan wrote a play, Goodbye Doctor, based on her experience as Lacan's patient. The play is structured around the sessions of Seriema with the Doctor. Through the analysis, Seriema discovers why she cannot give birth, namely, an unconscious desire to satisfy the will of her father who didn't authorize her to conceive. She ceases to be the victim of her unconscious, grasps the possibility of choosing a father for her child and thus becoming a mother. Goodbye Doctor has been adapted into a film, Adieu Lacan, by the director Richard Ledes. Analyzed by Lacan features an Introduction by Milan to both works as well as a new interview with Mari Ruti about her writing and Lacan. When you experience injustice, how do you respond? Do you immediately speak up and fight back?Maybe you get introspective and go deep into reflection, weighing out different options and scenarios before deciding how or whether to take action. Or do you suppress your authentic emotions and maintain a facade until you have figured out your next move? Many factors inform how you respond to threats and injustice–your values, life experiences, personality and temperament, identities, and privileges–to name just a few.Today's guest moved me profoundly with his responses in the days, weeks, and months following the January 6th insurrection in the face of many critics, threats, and risks. Not speaking up would have felt inauthentic for him, leaving him feeling out of alignment.New York Times best selling author, Harry Dunn, served in the United States Capitol Police from 2008 to 2023. He has been on duty for presidential inaugurations, joint sessions of Congress, State of the Union addresses as well as hundreds of peaceful protests and demonstrations. For his role defending the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Dunn received the Presidential Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Capitol Police Service Medal, the Capitol Police Achievement Medal, the Gus Heningburg Award from the African American Chamber of Commerce in New Jersey, and the Concerned Black Men Award. He has been outspoken about his experience, testifying in congressional hearings and speaking in the media about the violence he experienced that day and its aftermath. His memoir, Standing My Ground: A Capitol Officer's Fight for Accountability and Good Trouble After January 6th provides a firsthand account of what happened that day and the ramifications it has on our political and legal systems, democracy, communities, and individuals. Listen to the full episode to hear:How Officer Dunn knew he needed to move from isolated and processing the events to speaking outHow Officer Dunn has navigated using his anger a purposeful forceThe fine balancing act of speaking as a citizen versus as a Capitol Police officer as he took his story publicHow speaking out and testifying at trials and in front of Congress was both a painful and ultimately healing experienceThe values and faith in democracy that keep Officer Dunn going back to work at the CapitolLearn more about Office Harry Dunn:Twitter: @libradunnStanding My Ground: A Capitol Police Officer's Fight for Accountability and Good Trouble After January 6thLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Michael Jackson - We're Almost ThereSaturday Night LiveBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever
