Way back in Episode 27, the Camerosity gang went on a three hour tour to a tropical paradise and asked everyone what would be their idea of three "desert island" cameras that they would want to be stranded with if they couldn't have anything else.  That discussion proved to be a fun one and something we had wanted to revisit again.  It would take us all the way to Episode 88 when we would finally put out the call for another Desert Island episode. Joining Anthony, Paul, Mike and our new regular host Stephen Strangways, are returning callers A.J. Gentile, Andrew and Christopher Wells, Ira Cohen, Will Pinkham, and first time caller Robin Stone. Starting with this episode, we are welcoming Stephen as one of the regular hosts to the show.  His presence and knowledge on many previous episodes has impressed us, and after considering regular scheduling conflicts with the four regular hosts, we thought it was time to add a fifth person.  Although Theo has missed the last two episodes, he is still very much apart of the show and will return soon.  With a fifth host, in the event one of the "original four" have a scheduling issue, we can continue without hesitation. On this episode, we go through a tremendous amount of GAS, covering many unexpected models including multiple Horseman cameras, a Fuji G617, Argus Brick, Nikon F2, Leica CL, Zeiss-Ikon Tenax II, and many, many others. In addition to commercially available cameras, both Andrew and Christopher Wells share with us their own home made 3D printed large format creations.  Custom cameras built to use any combination of lenses, shutters, and film backs in a million different combinations are truly one of the more fascinating aspects of this hobby.  And if 3D printing your own camera isn't cool enough, Andrew took it a step further and even made his own bellows! In addition to tropical island GAS, we answer the question of why the Nikon F mount is backwards of almost every other interchangeable lens system and the Wells brothers give us a quick update of the state of current Polaroid Originals instant film. Meet Anthony, Paul, and Mike: If you are in the vicinity of Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday, March 22nd, come to the Ohio Camera Swap at the Hilton Garden Inn Cincinnati/West Chester and say hi to us.  Who knows, maybe even some other Camerosity Podcast regulars will show up as well.  While you're there, maybe you can buy something from us! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you!  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, we will be discussing camera failures and home repairs.  What are some of the most common problems vintage cameras face and what can you do to get them back up and working?  While the Camerosity Podcast fully recommends professional CLAs to keep vintage cameras going as long as possible, we understand that a full service on every vintage camera is impractical, so sometimes you have to take matters in your own hands.  If you aren't afraid to go inside a camera and possibly make it worse, the next episode may be for you!  We will record Episode 89 on Monday, March 10th at 7pm Central Daylight Time and 8pm Eastern Daylight Time. (Note that Daylight Savings Time starts in North America on Sunday, March 9th, so be sure to check your local time if you plan on joining the show!)

Is it a coincidence or did we plan it all along?  Episode 70 of the Camerosity Podcast is all about the 70s!  In this episode, the gang does our best to fit the best, the worst, and other noteworthy camera and photographic advancements of an entire decade into a 104 minute podcast! Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike on this episode are returning callers Daniel Belmes, Jordan Berube, Patrick Casey, Tim Peters, and first time callers Gheerwijn Clicque and Will Pinkham. We start off this episode dedicated to the 1970s, discussing a camera from...the 1960s!  As we often do, the show gets off topic quickly and we end up discussing the merits of the Canon Pellix and pellicle mirrors, but we get back on track with other Canon SLRs like the Canon AE-1 and A-1. We discuss the beginning of the auto focus era, and cover the first ever auto focus SLR.  In addition, the topic of everyone's favorite 1970s film, Pocket Instamatic Type 110 is discussed, why it was invented, notable cameras that used it, and some tips and tricks to home developing and scanning your own 110 film. We declare the two companies who we think were the most and least innovative camera makers of the 1970s.  Can you guess who they are?  I'll give you a hint, one of them rhymes with "Schmoloroid"! Realizing that we made it more than halfway through the show without discussing too many cameras, we did a lightning round asking everyone to share their favorite, least favorite, and at least one noteworthy camera from the 1970s.  Be sure to listen to the show and see if your 1970s camera was mentioned. For the next episode, we are taking a break from our regular two week recording cadence as both Paul and Theo have some vacations coming up.  We will definitely return soon for Episode 71, but as of right now, we do not have a date or a topic set.  As mentioned in this episode, we teased an upcoming Zeiss-Ikon episode, but so far, that's still to be determined... The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. Photographic historian & writer Michael Lesy joins the show to celebrate his amazing new book, WALKER EVANS: LAST PHOTOGRAPHS & LIFE STORIES (Blast Books). We get into his friendship with Evans & their shared interest in Lyrical Documentary, why Evans' last photos were dismissed by academics (even though they are, in fact, amazing), what he learned from writing a mini-biography of Evans for the book, how Evans returned to one of his first cameras — the Polaroid SX-70 — in his last year, and what Michael felt seeing his late wife among the final portraits Evans shot. We also get into Michael's ~50-year career from Wisconsin Death Trip to now, how reading the Russians — especially Turgenev — turned him into a writer, how he feels about everyone taking pictures on their phones, and the importance of understanding photo history. Plus, we discuss how he taught Literary Journalism at my alma mater, Hampshire College, for ~30 years, the audition test he gave his students so they could write their way into his class, why students became much more frail over the decades, and a LOT more. “I had no idea what it would lead to,” says Aaron Parke of Camerakote about the first time he attempted to customise his beloved Spotmatic with a new coat of paint. What started as a personal project to spruce up his camera has turned into something that has gotten him a steady stream of clients. He's not the only one doing this in recent times. I spoke to three customisation experts specialising in giving old cameras a brand new look by overhauling their exterior. The personalisation possibilities are endless once you realise what these specialists are capable of doing to turn your beloved camera into a one-of-a-kind collectable. What's amazing is that I contacted each of the three independently, but it turns out they're all quite well connected with one another. You can view this article and much more with minimal ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. When I began growing my vintage camera collection about six years ago, one of the cameras I couldn't easily find back then was a working Polaroid SX-70. Some months later, I stumbled upon a working one on eBay for a half-decent price. However, upon closer inspection, I realised it wasn't in the best cosmetic condition. The leather was peeling off in many places, and a few corners needed a decent polishing. There really aren't any stores in Dubai that could fix this, so I set about finding places online for a solution. And there it was, on the 3rd page of the google search results – DIY cutout leather for my SX-70. Two weeks and some painful yanking off of the original tarnished leather, and my SX-70 looks like it came straight out of the factory. I doubt I'd ever attempt anything more complicated than a reskin to give my beloved cameras a new look. Instead, I'd send my cameras to any of the below-mentioned companies if I ever wanted to revamp them. They don't just re-skin, they repair and repaint your prized camera to showroom or possibly better condition. Got a colour you have in mind for a repaint? Chances are one of them has a very creative version of it. Want to add some unique texture? They've got the right tools for it. And from the conversations I've had with them, it's pretty clear that your camera is in safe hands. They love what they do, and the pieces they present make you wonder why camera manufacturers aren't this imaginative when it comes to colours and finishings. Who Are These Expert Customisers? Where Did It All Start? Marc fell in love with photography at a young age. Shueido Camera is the company's name, and its founder Marc discovered photography when he was in high school. He started the company soon after that, in 2003, and began by selling used camera equipment. Shueido Camera is based in Taiwan with a studio in Japan. And producing high quality, visually distinct refurbishing and painting are what they specialise in. Shueido's camera customisation is probably the most unique that I've seen. It's not just in the different styles of paints they have. They also have some interesting methods of finishing off the bodywork. Hammertone (seen in the picture above), Brassing, and Accenting are just a few of the finishes they offer. He used to paint cars expertly. Now, he's moved those skills onto cameras. “In terms of applying liquids to a solid surface, there isn't a lot I don't know,” says Aaron Parke confidently. “I was trained by a ‘Coach Painter' a technician whose brush paintwork was like sheet glass. His attention to preparation details included greasing himself up for some of the higher-end jobs to avoid even a flake of skin departing from him and landing on the job.” “I'm someone who enjoys capturing images, the process of composing and taking a photograph and believe I have a good eye. I am, however, far from what anyone would consider a professional. I am a qualified Mental Health Nurse, an Independent Prescriber and have worked in this profession for the last 18 years. Prior to this, I spent a good 20 years working in the motor tra...

The autofocus capabilities in today’s cameras are amazing, so why would anyone buy a lens that offers only manual focus? Jeff and Kirk talk about situations where autofocus isn’t a consideration, such as buying inexpensive fast lenses or using an adapter to mount one brand’s lenses on another brand’s camera (like Nikon lenses on a Fujifilm body). We also chat about Jeff’s just-released book, The Photographer’s Guide to Luminar 4. This episode covers the background of Edwin Land, a brief history of Polaroid Corporation, the development of instant cameras and film throughout the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s, why this camera and its film are so iconic, and a description of the images I shot for this episode. There is no doubt that a film photography renaissance is in full swing… just ask anyone under the age of 25. And to be fair, there are many wonderful artists—of all ages—who have never stopped using film as their primary photographic format. To anyone who grew up shooting film and then made the transition to digital, it’s a bit curious to see such a resurgence in a medium that has long been listed as “critical,” if not simply dead.  At the B&H Photography Podcast, we still shoot with film cameras and enjoy the processes involved, but the guests on today’s episode are putting money (and time and energy) where their mouths are and have opened up a physical store (in addition to their online business) selling film and film cameras.   Brooklyn Film Camera, located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, sells film and film cameras --from 35mm to medium-format, disposables to underwater, pinholes to Polaroid. They are one of a few shops in the world to offer expert restoration services for Polaroid SX-70 and SLR 680 camera systems. They have a brisk online business but are also a local hub, offering repairs, photo tours, and a home base for a burgeoning community of film shooters. We speak with Kyle Depew and Julien Piscioneri about their company’s origin as an outgrowth of the Impossible Project, and about the services they provide, but we also discuss the who, why, and where of the analog renaissance and whether this is a trend or if film and digital will co-exist peacefully.   We are also joined by Michael Armato, of the B&H Used Department, and former proprietor of Armato Cameras, in Queens, NY. Armato brings his insight from running a camera store for more than forty years and sheds light on which film cameras and formats are most in demand at the used counter. Join us for this enjoyable chat and don’t forget to enter the B&H Photography Podcast FUJIFILM X-H1 Sweepstakes by August 15, 2018. One of my favorite things to do is walk around New York just checking street art from block to block. On my walks I’ll catch the latest murals, graffiti, stickers and wheat paste art. If you don’t know what wheat paste art is, wheat paste is a gel or liquid adhesive made from wheat flour or starch and water. That glue thats usually made in a big bucket is then used for paper artwork and then pasted on smooth walls. You’ve probably seen it and ya don’t even know it. Think Shepherd Ferry and his project Obey Giant, then theres Adam Cost, or Swoon, theres Bunny M, uhh there is also JR of the Inside Out Project. Today’s guest is Libby but most people probably know her from her street art, Phoebe New York. Phoebe can be found in the form stickers and wheatepaste art throughout the streets of New York. I met up with Libby in Washington Square Park and she walked me through the good, the bad and the ugly of being a street artist. In this episode we talk about shooting film photography in Paris, her love of vintage book covers, writing, becoming an artist, her first solo show, transitioning into a street artist, putting up stickers, her first night of wheat pasting, getting arrested, meeting the New York City Vandal Squad, how her alter ego Phoebe was born, subliminal messaging, letting go of crutches and much much more. Before you begin this episode or while you’re listening to this episode you should visit Phoebe instagram at phoebenewyork just to get an idea of what her work looks like and have a reference to what we are talking about as we make our way through her journey as an artist. Of course you can find links to her IG and everything we talking about in this episode at below. What does photography sound like? Each episode of “Just Listen” features a single, instant photograph made with a Polaroid SX-70 and an audio file recorded at the same moment. As human beings we have learned to ignore or block out a tremendous amount of what surrounds us. Often times when I allow people to listen to my sound recordings they will respond by saying “I was there but didn’t hear any of that.” I’ve found that sound focuses my attention while video, or motion, acts to distract. Sometimes, when the sound is truly moving, I find myself with my eyes closed, focused and connected. Just listen and allow the sound to set you free.
