The Gabor sisters were some of the most iconic cultural figures in the second half of the 20th century, having arrived on our shores from Nazi-occupied Hungary, where they experienced loss and engaged in heroic resistance. Along with their mother, Jolie, sisters Eva, Zsa Zsa, and Magda, stormed the mid-century zeitgeist and lived through extremely complicated family dynamics, as well as complicated romantic entanglements - including, between them all - 23 marriages, 18 divorces, two widowhoods, and two annulments. They were allies and rivals, poly-linguists, artisans, and entrepreneurs. But mostly, they were women possessed of a drive to succeed and an eternal willingness to bend their stories to suit the moment at hand. This month, Trashy Divorces is proud to present the lives and loves of The Glamorous Gabors, an eight-episode arc bringing these four amazing women into focus in the 21st century. Ok, so the NRL are opening their season in Las Vegas. Glamourous, brash, glitzy, tasteless. All show, no substance. A heaving pit of destitute and broken humans, the odour of loss overcome by the dense and mesmerising stench of money. Remember, Vegas wasn't built on winners, it's the epitome of the American nightmare, pipe dreams of wealth and achievement based on blind faith in the devastatingly cruel hand of lady luck. A mirage of prosperity built on the backs of gangsters, losers, alcohol, drugs and shattered dreams. What a place to try and gain traction for rugby league. Peter V'landys, Anthony Abdo and the like obviously want a slice of that platinum pie, possibly the whole dish and believe the golden-paved boulevards of sin city are the right route to travel on. Tapping into the morally corrupt world of sports betting looks to be the modus operandi of the NRL, which sits comfortably with a sport that spends a lot of it's time wading through the morass of the darker side of humanity. With clockwork rhythm, the NRL provides the media controversy after controversy, so it will find a bus shelter to sleep under there, I'm sure. The game won't get any air to breathe in Nevada, it will be swallowed whole by the monster of entertainment that is Vegas. League will be a side show, an oddity, a curious throwback to the more brutal days of collision sport. The National Rugby League has chosen to launch their season as far away from Australia as they could go, in a place that has no love for the game, attended by only expats, the wealthy that can afford to fly to and stay in Las Vegas, the corporate gravy train commuters and a couple of bemused and quite probably lost tourists. Vegas isn't the USA, it's a charlatan tourist trap, designed to drain people of their money and dignity, under the carefully manicured guise of fun. Bravo to the NRL I suppose for trying it on, and good luck to them. Luck being the operative word.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Changelings, lest we forget, are part human. Spending time in a meatsack isn't always Glamourous or exhilarating (though it can be both), but it's an inherent part of their experience that can be interesting both in and of itself, and as a contrast to the escapist fantasies that the Dreaming is built on. Yet players and Storytellers often gloss over those aspects of the characters that populate their games. So! We're here this week to try and redeem mortal life in Changeling a bit, giving due consideration to some of the more human elements that might come up at the table. Day jobs and homework, customer service interactions and strangers on the street, Dreamers and Kinain and Autumn People alike... there are many possibilities that you can explore. Naturally, we won't be covering them all, but maybe some of the tidbits here will help you craft a game experience that feels a little more real and useful for when you step away from the table at last. It's national go RVing or camping month and in this episode, we're going to play a little game of did you know? While I was attending the RV Park Conference two weeks ago, I learned some very interesting facts about camping. Some of these facts for those of you on the fence about camping, you may just find that you're going to suffer from FOMO – you know Fear of missing out syndrome? But for the rest of you, you're planning your next camping trip! Did you know that in 2021 there were 93.8 million active campers in the US? The population of the United States is 332 million. It's time to entice the remaining 238 million that camping is the new way to travel this summer, for work or extended stays! 56.9 million of those campers camped at least 1-time last year. 9.1 million were first time campers. Covid most definitely had an impact on those numbers as we tried to distance ourselves and escape back to nature. Who's camping? Back when my mom and dad would come to Florida for the winter, the demographic was easy to identify as you drove through any park. They were all retirees or baby boomers! Today, it's a combination of Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z. They are all finding their own way to afford this new lifestyle. The new camper is likely to include a majority of non-white's including 22% of black campers. It may be hard to believe but millennials are digging this too, and yet they maintain their style by going glamping. For those not familiar with the word glamping it's a combination of Glamourous meets camping – glamping. What does that look like? Think of an insulated teepee with fluffy bedding and an AC unit also known as Yurts. Treehouses are quite popular too! You have to say they are quite creative! Did you know? That 56% of campers prefer tent camping? This one blew my mind! I thought for sure it would have been RV'ing but let's face it, we all started out tent camping and graduated our way up to an RV as our desire for finer things were enhanced by our age and level of income. Tent camping is running in first place over the last 3 years! 54% are millennials? 54% are non-white campers? And to say nothing good came out of Covid would be an understatement. Did you know that 21.5 million people will be camping over the 4th of July holiday, and if you haven't made your reservations yet, you may be too late! Why are people camping? Like I mentioned above, it may have been caused out of a need for security and safety after the Covid pandemic. Campers also agree that it helps with emotional well-being, helps to escape the day-to-day grind and relieves stress and it improves relationships with your family or friends, or they just want to sit around a campfire. Sign me up for that one any day! I get lost just looking at the dancing flames. In 2022 they are predicting 61.3 million camping households in the US. I'm Mechiel Kopaska of the Fearless Innovator Podcast, thank you for listening and I hope you found this information helpful.
Think about someone you admire in your field of interest- someone who is at a level you aspire to be. Now think about this: imagine the number of times they had to do the same things over and over and over again until they became so good at it that it grabbed, and held, our attention. So much so that we now aspire to get to where they're at. In repeatedly doing the mundane, the boring, the not-so-glamourous they were able to achieve a level of success that motivates us every time we think about them. In today's session of Note to Self Diaries, I share with you some of the lessons I'm learning about the monotonous habit known as 'repetition.' . . If anything I said from today's session resonated with you I'd love to hear all about it. Share your comments with me via email at alicia@notetoselfdiaries.com or you can slide into my DMs on IG and share your feedback there @notetoselfdiaries
As we enter the Seelie half of the year, it's time to talk about Freeholds and Hidden Glens, which gave us seven thorough descriptions of the spaces where changelings get together for the doing of all manner of sundry things. Each of the freeholds is rather different, offering a range of ideas and story setting possibilities for a game. Each of us were rather partial to one or two of them, but we'll let you be the judge of which ones sound the most interesting... uncanny places Something that came up briefly in the discussion (but will not be expanded here to the voluminous amount it could be) is Stephen King as a point of reference for the trope of semi-conscious places, most of which turn out to be creepy. This is slightly different than what you'd usually get with Haunts in Wraith, where the spookiness of a haunted house or wherever gets mostly attributed to the presence of the ghosts. But when the place itself begins to take on an intelligence of its own, that's another matter entirely. Works by King like The Shining and perhaps Rose Red have this thread of a place becoming corrupted by the violence or evil deeds that took place there, which causes it to gather a malevolence of its own, which leads to more such deeds, making the place stronger. It all seems very darkly Glamourous. But this isn't unique to horror literature, and obviously folklore is thick with mythology and superstition about the relationship between past events and present influences in specific locations. You could easily set a scene in a place that causes people to become joyful, or lustful, or whatever. The Dreaming is brimming with emotion, so it's not unreasonable that places in close contact with it, freeholds or otherwise, would have an outsize influence on the feelings of those who enter them. If the building or glade or skate park or whatever is set up as antagonistic to a motley as well, it presents slightly more of a puzzle for players: how do you fight a landscape? How do you reason with geography? How do you prevent yourself from becoming sucked into its emotional vortex when you enter to rescue the childling/find the Treasure/defeat the nocnitsa? Ghost stories do not have a monopoly on these topics, and folding them into your chronicle can be a clever way to give changelings something a little more nebulous to deal with. But equally, it's fitting for the themes of the game; that uncertainty and sense of being out of place, what theorists since Freud have called the uncanny, reminds us that sometimes the horror in a faerie-story is from the sense that your surroundings are just somehow, indefinably wrong. Food for thought! ... just because... It's always nice to see White Wolf folks poking fun at each other with their writing, and sometimes the artwork... So, one of the freeholds, Gangster's Hideaway, is situated along a trod where all the abandoned objects in the world eventually end up (supposedly). Here we have some keys, a pen, matchbook advertising a phone sex line, a thumbtack... and a curious book buried underneath that old-school Vampire players may recognize. Because of course, if the Endless Trod is the place where all lost and abandoned junk ends up, VtM books will and should be there. (J/k, VtM players.

This is the final episode of our four-part Better Half mini-series containing six lectures apropos to the First Ladies from the Cold War up to the present time. What is known of the First Ladies of the United States we have covered up to this point comes down to us via the press, memoirs, what can be divined from letters, paintings, anecdotes, and personal artifacts. Following World War Two, fashion became ever more critical as visual media embedded itself into politics. We begin with a material girl who hated the dry-cleaning in WASHington DC so much, she shipped it to KC to be done properly, one whose favorite press time answer was "No Comment", a multi-linguist beauty reportedly "full of the devil", a billboard-busting, millionaire First Lady that word-skirmished with Catwoman, "a good piece of literature on a shelf of cheap paperbacks" circuiting a leper colony, a fashion model dancing instructor credited with a life-saving blip, a promiscuous FLOTUS who shook hands with a serial killer, a "Glamourous paragon of chic" going to war with drugs attired in "misappropriated" crimson finery, a FLOTUS to have three Air Force bombers named after her and a private cabin on the Love Boat, the first to be a lawyer/Senator/Secretary of State/Presidential Candidate/Grammy Winner, the only First Lady with a master's degree in Library Science, the first African American First Lady, the nation's second foreign-born FLOTUS single-handedly takes on cyberbullying, and a Quaker City sports junkie controversially uses her rightfully earned title.

While living in New Mexico, I started podcasting in 2005 first producing Jeffery Milburns Omni Art Salon, which Jeffrey continues today with over one-quarter of a million downloads. That my friends is another Flashback Friday episode forthcoming. In 2006 I was well on my way producing podcasts when I got a call from a friend asking if I knew Jim Terr from Blue Canyon Productions. I said I didn’t. My friend told me he was a comedian and a local New Mexican radio personality and I should have him on my show. So I gave him a call. I called him and we agreed for him to come into my studio the following Wednesday at noon. That Wednesday morning around 9 AM I got a call that went something like this: Is this Mr. Be? I said it’s John. The voice on the other end introduced himself as BuDDy a good friend of Jim Terr. He explained that Jim couldn’t make that date and had suggested he come instead. I said Okay. BuDDy went on to say… Mr. Be, you just play it straight and I’ll take it from there. The following Wednesday at noon, BuDDy showed up, which became the birth of BuDDy’s Old Fashioned Podcast, we just wanna be your friend, the character created by Jim Terr. Over the 36 episodes we created together, Jim (BuDDy) taught me how to use my voice with a microphone. He made me a few pop-filters for the microphones and mentored me in so many more ways. To date, this show was the most fun I’ve ever had on a podcast. What follows is my favorite episode, episode 16: A Glamourous Guest, recorded and released July 7, 2006, after the recent Fourth of July. If you go to the show notes for this episode, you’ll see the “original” show notes BuDDy wrote for the episode. Many of the links mentioned are now dead and noted. But nothing else was changed. Start of BuDDy’s original show notes for this episode (Note “English” spelling of “glamourous”) Are we putting headlines in “initial caps” like #13 or not? (Executive decision) These notes are a little extra long, allowing for the “filmstrip” if you’re able to run it down the side, though I’m not attached to the filmstrip idea since the top photo is already generally pretty small. Do whatever you want with the photos, as long as you put her best one at the top, and don’t include anything of BuDDy’s neck below where a regular shirt collar WOULD be, and please don’t use photo #1985 in which BuDDy looks toothless – thanks. God, I enjoy writing these show notes! BuDDy #16 A Glamourous Guest BuDDy “rings in” the program with some prayer chimes thoughtfully supplied by Ms. Steph, which are sure to become a regular feature of the program until BuDDy tires of them. After letting BuDDY rattle on for a few minutes about something or other, Mr. Be announces the installation of a Listener Comment Line for BuDDy’s Old Fashioned Podcast! (now a dead link) Before they try it out, Mr. Be introduces a surprise guest, the lovely actress, and video editor Kate VanDevender of Albuquerque and New York City. That’s right, New York City! (we don’t mess around here on BOFP). BuDDy is dazzled into near-speechless awkwardness but quickly recovers to suggest they listen to the comment line, which in fact contains only one crackly “test” comment from BuDDy. Mr. Be gamely suggests that listeners start phoning in their comments and questions anyway, but BuDDy suggests a more conservative approach of ironing out the bugs first, and there it stands for now. Anyhow, our Miss Kate talks of her acting career, including her upcoming role in a comedy called “Sealed for Freshness” in New York. BuDDy offers his expertise on “burping” Tupperware. She also talks about her video editing business, ImagineEdit (now a dead link), wherein she prepares “demo reels” for actors. (Kate’s own “reel” is included there!) BuDDy, not surprisingly, mentions his inclusion on the Forbes Billionaire List. Kate also talks about her participation as an editor for the short film, “Eddy Ray”, in the upcoming Duke City Shootout (now a dead link) in Albuquerque. BuDDy mentions that the podcast has been heard in such exotic locales as Canada, Denmark, Germany, the UK (formerly England), and Yugoslavia (formerly something or other), according to our podcast “stats” (statistics). BuDDy also wishes out loud that we could get in a fresh supply of our podcasting essential, Marsha Mason’s Throat Therapy Spray (now a dead link), for ourselves and our guests. We play a rockin’ cut by last week’s guest, Rick Mena, called “I Failed The Lie Detector Test,” from his self-titled (or “eponymous”) CD called, not surprisingly, “Rick Mena.” BuDDy sings a joyous song called “Another Heterosexual Wedding (Here in Santa Fe)”, accompanied by Mr. Be and Miss Kate, and explains that the song was actually written and performed for an actual heterosexual wedding here in Santa Fe! BuDDy reminds us that he’s not trying to stir up any controversy, and simply wants to be our friend. Another ring or two of the prayer chimes, and we’re outta there!
