Why is your movie called The Shining - it should be called The Cabin Fevering... or Write'n Go Crazy. But, as a guy from Wisconsin - yeah... it can happen. Heck, look up the film Wisconsin Death Trip. HISTORY. what was I saying? Join Joe, Ken, Andy, and Dan as they talk about the memed film by Stanley Kubrick. And determine with them, if it still stands up. *** Side note, Joe's mic was baffled by a webcam, and the recording software switched from the good mic to the not-so-good mic. Sorry.
Wisconsin Death Trip is a 1999 movie by director James Marsh based on the book by the same name by Michael Lesy. The film features reenactments of violent crimes, murders, mental illness, depression, and vandalism that are reported and dismissed as quickly as the newspaper articles that wrote about the incidents that took place in Black River Falls between 1885 and 1910. This week, Super Friend Sofia will be joining us to discuss the film and some of the feature vignettes that resonated with us, what was going on in Wisconsin during that time that led to some of the gruesome events featured in the movie, and why we Stan Mary Sweeney. Join me as I chat with Eigil Bryld, a hardworking Director of Photography, and we explore his recent projects – Extrapolations, The Machine, and No Hard Feelings, which had a very quick turnaround. Listen in as we share our thoughts on the writers' strike against studios, its difference from the COVID-19 situation, and the luxury of being able to refuse work. We also discuss how saying no has sometimes led to even better opportunities. We go on to discuss how Eigil's background in documentaries has shaped his work in cinema, influencing his naturalistic approach to cinematography. His journey from documentary filmmaker to cinematographer is truly fascinating, as is his work on films like Wisconsin Death Trip. Hear about his approach to shooting films and the importance of placing the camera perfectly to capture the dynamics of a scene. Finally, we spend a good chunk of time discussing his work with iconic director David Fincher and the lessons that came with it. Eigil shares his experience on House of Cards and the techniques he used to capture the perfect shot. We also discuss his approach to lighting, the importance of quick setup and breakdown of equipment, and the dance between the camera and the actors. Interview by Kris PetersWhen the enigmatic and universally loved frontman of LA industrial/heavy outfit Static X passed away in 2014 many thought that was the end for the band as well.Wayne Static WAS Static X - just by virtue of the name alone - and to try and find anyone to replicate his on stage intensity was thought to be futile. The band who had given the world the groundbreaking album Wisconsin Death Trip and the industrial alt-rock hybrid Evil Disco, shaking metal from its stagnant state and redefining what can be done with heavy music, was rudderless and without the emotional capability to continue. Wayne's passing - after long periods of unrest within the band - seemed to be the final debilitating factor in the future longevity of Static X but behind the scenes the three founding members of Static X, Tony Campos, Koichi Fukuda and Ken Jay were scouring the musical landscape for someone who could not only fill Waynes shoes musically, but would also be accepted by their fanatically loyal fanbase. In 2019 the trio recruited a still unidentified mask wearing enigma as vocalist who went by the name Xer0 and despite initial skepticism and often downright hostility from some members of the public, Static X have been reborn as both a live and recording unit and will arrive in Australia for three shows starting in Melbourne on May 19 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Wisconsin Death Trip.Sensational live footage of their US tour has leaked on social media which justifies the current hype surrounding Static X, with the show as much a visual spectacle as it is aural, complete with a stunning new outfit for Xer0.Bass player Tony Campos joined HEAVY recently to discuss the tour and a host of other things relating to Static X, starting with how much of Wisconsin Death Trip they will be playing as part of the anniversary celebrations."We will be playing... I won't say most of it," he offered, "but we'll be playing a lot of cuts off that album."Campos has been quoted as saying that as well as playing songs from that album and Machine, Static X are also going to throw in "a couple of nice surprises" so, not being ones to like surprises, we asked him if he would share the knowledge."It depends on who the surprise is coming from," he laughed. "If you want a clue check out any of the interviews from the last couple of shows that we've been doing here in the States to get an idea."Static X will also be celebrating the life and legacy - as they do with every show - of Wayne Static, which although gives the fans an inside glimpse into the mechanisms of the band with Wayne out front, would also be emotionally draining on the surviving members night after night."Being together with my friends that were there with me in the beginning and having that comaraderie with those guys keeps the vibe positive," he measured. "It keeps it focussed on all the good things we achieved together."In the full interview Tony talks more about what to expect from the shows, how different it is having Xer0 out the front to when Wayne was there, losing Wayne and the decision to move on without him, initial negative feedback from fans and how it affected the band, the new stage show and what it entails, the early days of Static X and where they fit in, creating their sound and introducing it to a new audience, at what stage of the bands life did he personally feel they were onto something good, how they made their last two albums Project: Regeneration Volumes 1 and 2 after Wayne's passing, future new music with Xer0 at the helm and more.
It's been 50 years since Michael Lesy's influential cult classic "Wisconsin Death Trip" was published. A documentary text of found material, the book gathered prosaic historical photos of Wisconsin residents from the turn of the 20th century and paired them to haunting effect with fragmentary newspaper archives from the same time period reporting on often garish deaths — what our critic Dwight Garner, evaluating the book for its anniversary, called "horrific local news items that point, page by page, toward spiritual catastrophe. Nearly every person in it looks as if they are about to be struck by lightning."Garner appears on the podcast this week to talk with the host Gilbert Cruz about "Wisconsin Death Trip" and the resonance it still holds in the culture."It evokes what long nights felt like in America," he says, "before there was electricity and radio, and before — if your child was very sick, there were no antibiotics. And maybe your child was dying. And anxiety of course could not be treated then by antidepressants or other kinds of pills. And people quote-unquote went mad more often than we'd like to think. And there were bankruptcies, people threw themselves in front of trains. There are all kinds of suicides in this book. And it just makes you wonder what was happening, what kind of spiritual crisis was going on in Wisconsin in the 1890s."Garner is a fan of unusual documentary literature, he tells Cruz, and in "Wisconsin Death Trip" he sees not only a portrait of a vanished small-town America but also a portrait of vanished journalism. "Newspapers in America have been gutted out," he says. "You don't have small-town papers like this in many places anymore that have real staffs who report on this stuff. There's a kind of reporting in this book that is sort of the 'crazy death' that we don't read about anymore: the person at the sawmill who gets tangled up. Maybe you'll read about it somewhere. But it was more of a staple of small-town news reporting then. Even papers like The New York Times did a lot of that ... But in general what Lesy is after is stuff that almost suggests, as I said before, a kind of spiritual crisis. So many people having breakdowns. And it just makes you realize that our nostalgia for the good old American heartland, there's a real dark shadow there. And in many ways it's false nostalgia. And this book is one of those correctives that puts you in touch with the night side of life in this way that few books of documentary that I've read actually do."We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. You can send them to books@nytimes.com.
I've only ever listened to Wisconsin Death Trip, but there's not really anything you could do about it, I don't think anyone that listens to this or any podcast outside of an elite combat sports athlete could last more than 30 seconds with me without getting tapped, you might have a decent chance against Buddy if you are a blue belt or you wrestled for a couple of years, or if you can run two miles. Honestly tho is it really worth getting into all that over Static X? It is to me because it's a phenomenal record that isn't given it's due, bands like Code Orange and Vein.fm really owe a lot to this visionary masterpiece. www.patreon.com/deathmetaldetectives
Maureen Ryan is a veteran producer who has made a number of seminal, impactful films throughout her versatile career. Her several documentary collaborations with acclaimed British director James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) are among them, and began with Wisconsin Death Trip (1999). Constructed with a film-noir grittiness, the film surveyed a series of grizzly murders which took place in Black River Falls, a small remote town, in the 1800s, and was shortlisted for an Academy Award. She herself was nominated for a BAFTA award. Several works followed, including The Team (2005), which she produced, observing a homeless soccer team which travels to compete in Austria; the BAFTA nominated Project Nim (2011); and the iconic Man on Wire (2008), a hybrid-documentary about tightrope walker Phillipe Petit as he prepared to walk across the World Trade Center in 1974, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film and the BAFTA Award for Best British Film in addition to sweeping the “Big Four” critics awards the same year. Documentaries Maureen has produced include The Gates (2007) and Bomber (2009). Recently, she co-produced Becoming (2020), following Michelle Obama on the book tour circuit; the film was nominated for four Emmy Awards, and is available on Netflix. Also on Netflix is the comedic documentary Dick Johnson is Dead (2020), which Maureen co-produced; premiered at Sundance; won an Emmy Award, and was also shortlisted for an Academy Award. She has been a professor at Columbia University for over 20 years, and her essential publication — Producer to Producer: A Step-by-Step Guide to Low Budget Independent Film Producing (2nd Edition), is available on Amazon and all the literary outlets. In our discussion, we spoke about Maureen's unique, prolific career marked by longevity; collaborating with moving pieces in film; differentiating film from a practical and theoretical framework; and country music.Opening Credits: KieLoBot - Golden Pineapple Funk; KieLoBot - Hippie Funghi Policeman Downhill; Closing Credits: Jason Shaw - TRAVEL LIGHT

The trial of five members of the Oath Keepers wrapped up yesterday with guilty verdicts, including on the harshest charge of seditious conspiracy for the group's leader and one other. It's the perfect preface for today's guest and the story he brings us. Jeff Sharlet is one of my favorite guests and one of my favorite authors/journalists. This morning, a new article went live on the Vanity Fair website, and it's what you expect from a Jeff Sharlet piece about another of his road trips. This time, he tells us about his own private Wisconsin death trip among militia men and fascists, and thankfully some beautiful souls. It was the day after the extreme court struck down Roe v Wade... Jeff joins us for the second half hour of the show. We'll begin with a round up of the day's news, including the latest on the efforts to derail a railroad strike, and the very sad news of the death of Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie. This week on the show, we spend a good chunk of the first half talking about a 12 hour round trip that Mat and Adam took to experience two wrestling shows, a haunted Walmart and a quick visit to the creepy town of St. Nazianz that we highlighted on a recent Creepshow episode. From there, the Ramblin' Rabbi was on the line as Sarah had the boys square off against one another in a game of wits (it was just trivia, but still). Enjoy!
5.5 hours of driving. 322 miles. 2 wrestling shows. 1 awesome day. That was Sunday boiled down to its most simple form. This week we spend the bulk of the show running down ACW Wisconsin at Tanners and GCW at La Pica Lounge. It was so fun! We also chat about the Retro Raw from 11/16/98. We have a new "corporate" champion: The Rock! That is who Stone Cold Steve Austin set his sights on in the main event. We also briefly talk about AEW as we are headed toward Full Gear. Enjoy!
Photographic historian & writer Michael Lesy joins the show to celebrate his amazing new book, WALKER EVANS: LAST PHOTOGRAPHS & LIFE STORIES (Blast Books). We get into his friendship with Evans & their shared interest in Lyrical Documentary, why Evans' last photos were dismissed by academics (even though they are, in fact, amazing), what he learned from writing a mini-biography of Evans for the book, how Evans returned to one of his first cameras — the Polaroid SX-70 — in his last year, and what Michael felt seeing his late wife among the final portraits Evans shot. We also get into Michael's ~50-year career from Wisconsin Death Trip to now, how reading the Russians — especially Turgenev — turned him into a writer, how he feels about everyone taking pictures on their phones, and the importance of understanding photo history. Plus, we discuss how he taught Literary Journalism at my alma mater, Hampshire College, for ~30 years, the audition test he gave his students so they could write their way into his class, why students became much more frail over the decades, and a LOT more. This week we're highlighting an interview Bruce Miller did with Ryan White, the director of Good Night Oppy. The film, which documents NASA's Mars rover Opportunity, is in theaters now and will land on Amazon Prime on November 23rd. It's an unexpectedly moving movie that Bruce has short-listed for his Oscar pool, and we thought we'd take the opportunity to hash out some of the other great documentaries this year, what it is that makes a great non-fiction film or series, and since Bruce also recently had a chat with the 'Documentary Now!' creators we give some shine to that consistently brilliant satirical deconstruction of the genre. Michael Lesy's 1973 book Wisconsin Death Trip examines the harsh lives of many Wisconsinites during the years leading up to, and just after the turn of the twentieth century. Murder, suicide, disease, and madness devoured the state, though the era was seemingly mysteriously forgotten until, in 1968, Lesy came across the work of former Black River Falls photographer Charles Van Schaick, and newspaper articles of the day, to paint a truly horrific period of our state's and nation's history. Combined into an art, and quasi-history book, Wisconsin Death Trip has since become one of the most iconic "cult classics" in American pop culture history. The years between 1890 and 1910 were marred by suicide, murder, arson, and insanity around the Black River Falls region of Wisconsin. We read excerpts from Wisconsin Death Trip by Michael Lesy, which catalogues all these horrific and sometimes comical incidents. Join us on this trip to hell on this episode of Under the Pendulum Podcast. Sources: Lesy, Michael, Schaick C. Van, and Warren Susman. Wisconsin Death Trip. New York: Pantheon Books, 1973.

With hair sticking straight up and asses in chairs, the critics sat down to review "Wisconsin Death Trip' by Static-X. Let the techno beats drop and the rave dancing commence!
Tillamook has lost their mind. Dating on the spectrum, wiki feet, Josh's wet body and much more.
https://static-x.org/ Static-X is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1994. The line-up has fluctuated over the years, but was long-held constant with band founder, frontman, vocalist, and guitarist Wayne Static until 2014. The band was founded by Wayne Static and original drummer Ken Jay. They rose to fame with their 1999 debut album Wisconsin Death Trip where their heavy industrial metal sound attracted attention within the burgeoning nu metal movement of the late 1990s, with the album eventually going platinum in the United States. The band released five more albums over the course of the next decade: Machine in 2001, Shadow Zone in 2003, Start a War in 2005, Cannibal in 2007, and Cult of Static in 2009. The band entered a hiatus while Static worked on his solo album, Pighammer, in 2011. Static briefly reformed Static-X in 2012, using only members of his solo album's touring band, before officially breaking up in June 2013. On November 1, 2014, Wayne Static died at the age of 48. The rest of the original Static-X lineup – bassist Tony Campos, guitarist Koichi Fukuda and drummer Ken Jay – announced on October 23, 2018 that they were reforming the band in Static's honor, and would release Project Regeneration, their first studio album in eleven years, in 2020.
One of the most iconic figures in nu-metal, Wayne Static, is almost more of the focus of this episode than the band is, as we look into Static-X's start as a band, Wayne's eventual death, and the band's decision to dress Edsel Dope up in a Wayne mask and go on a 20th Anniversary Tour of this album. It's the first album we've reviewed from the side of nu-metal that also held a pretty large industrial influence, and both Bryan and John explain that it was one that largely passed them by at the time but one they are excited to revisit. In a continuing series where Bryan Quinby (Street Fight Radio) and John Cullen (Blocked Party) review one classic nu-metal album per month, Static-X comes in from a listener donation, and for John at least, it feels like the only way this would've ever gotten a review from the P.O.D. boys. But Bryan and John are game for it, as the album shows some flashes of what Static-X could have been, were they not so focused on "evil disco" and building tracks strictly from the drums and programming up. And the weird legacy of the band proves almost more interesting, as the in-fighting over the name, Wayne Static's drug problems, and the introduction of Xer0 make them a more fascinating tale than most. Plus, we find some time to talk about Korn's cover of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" going viral and Corey Taylor's new solo project. If you want a fun solo project, you can take some alone time and use it to donate to the show at https://patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month gets you a bonus episode every single month. Last month, we had the wonderful Jordan Uhl on to discuss Strait Up, the tribute album to the deceased lead singer of the band Snot which features nearly all of nu-metal's greatest singers, and we've got another great episode coming this month as we tackle the Queen of the Damned soundtrack. School's out across the nation but Erika still did a book report. We discuss the history of the Black River's Fall area during the Victorian era. Death, capturing death in photos, and the wide use of the concept of insane that sent many people to the local asylum. Michael Lesy assembled hundreds of clips from the newspaper archives into his 1973 book titled Wisconsin Death Trip. The book has overwhelming detail, yet leaves so much to the imagination. The photos and clippings are not paired together and the pages are not even numbered. You learn the person's story by either looking a person and trying to read what their life was like or reading and trying to picture what their life was like. We researched a favorite character, Mary Sweeny, and Kerry has some big plans for this story. Watch out Hollywood. The casting couch is open.
Random conversation about our girls getting ready to head to New Orleans for Shiprocked and all the bands they were looking forward to. And of course as always our usual shenanigans of jokes and madness.
Often, I'm asked what it's like backstage when I get to interview the artists. Many times the artists arrive at the venue with a very limited amount of time to get the equipment set up, do soundchecks and take the stage before they have to load everything up and start the process all over again. This interview is a prime example of what it often sounds like backstage. At various parts of the interview, you can hear the roadies doing a soundcheck at believe me it's quite loud. But sometimes, that's the only place and time that the artists can squeeze in an interview. I've been a big fan of Tony's work in bands like Static-X, Ministry and more. You'll probably never meet a more genuine, down to earth entertainer than Tony Campos. Sorry for the background noise in this one but I hope you enjoy our interview with Tony!

(07/24/19) - 20th Anniversary of Wisconsin Death Trip, talkin' Wayne and "Xer0," tour, Project Regeneration and more with the bassist
Tony Campos from Static X is my guest today, as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of their album Wisconsin Death Trip. That album put this band on the map and really kicked off their career. We discuss the tour, putting the band back together and rehearsing for the tour. The production is a pretty good size undertaking as Tony talks about that and the first show. Was it always going to be an un-named singer to sing for the band and how did they decide to do it the way they are? He tells me about the new album they're working on and how far along they are. He said his relationship with Wayne at the end of his life wasn't good. We talk about OzzFest, and more.... Al Beck is back to crash the pod with Rock News. He gives the info on the greatest band on Earth, Steel Panther! As Hell Yeah gets ready to drop their album, Al fills us in on what they're doing. Zakk Wylde talks about almost joining GNR - which Slash and Axl have both told me about and I play some clips - as well as Slayer news. Thank You so much for listening. Check out past episodes below and keep checking back. 5 star ratings and reviews are always appreciated. -Meltdown- https://static-xshop.com/ https://twitter.com/OfficialStaticX https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/ https://twitter.com/MeltdownWRIF https://twitter.com/AlBeckRadio
Static X bassist Tony Campos called in to talk about the "Wisconsin Death Trip" 20th Anniversary Tour coming to the Observatory in Santa Ana, California on 7/25 and Catch One in Los Angeles, California on 7/27. Here's what we talked about: Early days of forming Static X (0-3) "Wisconsin Death Trip" 20th anniversary tour (3-7) "Xtreme Steel Tour" w/Pantera & Slayer (7-9) Playing "Looks That Kill" with Tommy Lee (9-10:30) Dave Mustaine cancer battle (10:30-12) Project Regeneration (12-end)
Here is a sentence we never thought we'd be saying again: Static-X are touring Australia again! Believe it or not, but three of four OG members are back and heading down under for a tour like no other which will serve not only as the 20th Anniversary of their breakthrough album Wisconsin Death Trip but also a Memorial Tribute to their late frontman Wayne Static, who passed away back in 2014. The news has divided fans (some for, some against the idea) but bassist Tony Campos is on this weel's podcast chatting all about it to clear the air and answer any concerns fans may have had. Podcast host Browny, despite being a fan, takes both sides of the argument to get the truth from the band and find out if the right intentions are at play here or if this is another one of those cash grabs from fans, but from what you'll hear, every intricate detail about this tour has been well planned, thought out and even received the blessings of Wayne's family before the ball was even rolling and it seems the people that want this the most are Static-X's longterm fans who even pledged their own money for the band's new album, Project Regeneration, which wouldn't have seen the light of day if it wasn't for their contributions. Tony also delves into the current status of the album and how they're using old vocal recordings from studio sessions before Wayne passed to create a brand new album from the band, featuring original members Tony Campos, Ken Jay and Koichi Fukuda. There's also throwbacks from Megadeth, dope, Rammstein, Coal Chamber and Fear Factory, New Music from SKYND, Sleeping With Sirens and Bare Bones + heaps more... #WoSUATW #StaticX #TonyCampos #WayneStatic #WisconsinDeathTrip #ProjectRegeneration #Metal #IndustrialMetal #Megadeth #DaveMustaine #FearFactory #CoalChamber #Rammstein #Reliqa #dope #SKYND #SleepingWithSirens #BareBones #DrownThisCity #Podcast #MusicPodcast #Interview #WallOfSoundAU
In this experimental episode of This Must Be The Place Elizabeth pilots a computer program named Digital Death Trip, or alternatively Trove Town Tragedy, coded by Elizabeth’s sister Sarah. The program selects a random location in Victoria, then a random ‘tragedy’ from that location using the National Library of Australia’s Trove archive of digitized newspapers, and the Trove API. The olden days articles retrieved are mostly from between the 1860s and 1950s. The program uses ‘Speak’ to read out articles in a robot voice. It’s art meets historical geography meets Perfect Match robot. Death Trip is a reference to 1973 book Wisconsin Death Trip, a collection by Michael Lesy of photographs and news articles from two small superficially comfortable Wisconsin towns in the late 19th century. By picking darker articles – suicides, epidemics, bankruptcies, murders, tramp armies – the effect was “constantly repeated themes”, with fragments illustrating each another and the disruptions of their times. Elizabeth wondered if something broadly similar could be done with Australia’s Trove. Trove’s API allows you to use a key to search and use results automatically, to create your own application (one example is the Trove Penguin Bot). Much of Trove is open and crowd-sourced - anyone can search, or correct machine-read text, or create lists. While it doesn’t yet have specific location data, experiments like this bring more of a spatial dimension. What the Death Trip code does is randomly select a place name in Victoria, combine this with the key word “tragedy”, search Trove, shortlist and read out headlines, and compile a case file on a random article. Depending what comes back, the idea is to investigate the selected town tragedy. This could be an excuse to go on trips to visit Victorian towns, perhaps some with swimming pools. While the code could search for any kind of event or word, this project is specifically interested in the word ‘tragedy’. Tragedy was a common news headline partly because covering Coroner’s courts and police beats was a convention of the emerging popular newspaper industry of the 19th century. The articles the bot retrieves are not just any tragedies, but those tied to a place, usually with ‘the’ definite article. Nearly every Australian town seemed to have had incidents headlined The [insert Town Name] Tragedy. These included forces of nature – drowning and fires, and what we might now call negligence involving workplace machinery. Car accidents, as we now know them, were at first ‘tragedies’. And violence: it covered suicides, murders, and murder-suicides particularly in the context of the home. Naming things ‘The’ town tragedy seemed to suggest such things couldn’t and haven’t happened in that place, and that if they did they would leave a lasting impact. One thing the experiment shows is these things have happened, usually more than once, and they are forgotten, and happen again. Tragedy seemed then, as now, to mean the line between things we want to try to understand or control, and those we do not. Some of these change, and some don’t (notably, some of the language of domestic murder suicides). As part of this project, Elizabeth has so far corrected and tagged about 1,100 tragedies. Words like farm, ‘pea-rifle’, and ‘quarrel’ have new connotations. In this test, Elizabeth and Sarah run through the concept, then the mechanics and mishaps of running the code, and see which towns and tragedies the bot picks. As it turns out, those selected are from 2 irrigation towns in Victoria: The Tatura Tragedy 1905; and The Quantong Tragedy 1894. As a follow up, Elizabeth will use the results to find out more about the incidents and their contexts in time and place. The pit is activated in record time on this episode of Roach Koach. Jenny, Lorin and Matt take a deep dive into Static-X's debut album, Wisconsin Death Trip. Topics discussed: Did this band miss their shot at the big time? Is it possible to decode the Robert Christgau rating system? Can an album be too good? What is "Love Dump" about? What is it mean to have a "reverse Staind problem"? Also another edition of Who's Tweeting?, a brief detour with Ministry and nursery rhymes, and of course, debating whether Static-X deserve a spot in the Nu-Metal Canon. Rob picks up a new habit where he covers himself in oil in an attempt to transcend into tranquility and instead takes a trip back in time. Meanwhile Bloodborne kicks Ceej directly in the dick. Once Ceej calms down they discuss the Rocky franchise and Rob enrages Ceej with his opinions.
