EPISODE 60 - "THELMA RITTER: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" - 11/04/2024 There's a scene in the classic 1950 film All About Eve where Eve Harrington (ANNE BAXTER), a star-struck fan who has infiltrated the life of Broadway star Margo Channing (BETTE DAVIS), is telling the tragic story of her past to Margo and her friends. While Margo and company are drawn into the sad circumstances of Eve's life, Margo's acerbic dresser Birdie, played to perfection by the great THELMA RITTER, is not buying her sob story. After Eve finishes, Birdie mutters, "What a story! Everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end." This is probably the moment I fell in love with Ritter. With her heavy New York accent, diminutive size, working-class charm, and sarcastic zingers, she made a career of stealing scenes from big stars and making the most of her time on screen. She played characters wiser than most, and her characters certainly didn't suffer fools gladly. She is a cinematic treasure, and we celebrate her as our Star of the Month. My intention this week to produce a joyous new episode further celebrating contraltos, was undermined by multiple deaths this past week in the musical world, including French pop icon Françoise Hardy, Swiss tenor Eric Tappy, American art song icon Paul Sperry, and R&B diva Angela Bofill, capped by the tragic demise of young Belgian coloratura soprano Jodie Devos of breast cancer at the age of only 35. The episode, thus, begins with brief musical excerpts from all of these recently departed artists. In the main episode, I spread the contralto net even wider than last time, focusing on low-voiced doyennes of popular song. We hear jazz singers (Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae); stars of stage, screen, and radio (Marlene Dietrich, Polly Bergen, Connee Boswell, Alice Faye, Lisa Kirk, Kate Smith); purveyors of the Blues (Bessie Smith, Bertice Reading); French cabaret singers (Damia, Barbara); fado, rebetika, and tango artists (Amália Rodrigues, Milva, Maria Bethânia, Sotiria Bellou); and late-20th century pop icons (Cher, Tina Turner, Karen Carpenter, Annie Lennox); with a few delightful surprises along the way. I should also note, in honor of Pride Month, that more than a few of these artists flaunted societal norms regarding their affectional preferences, living either furtively or openly at a time when such expressions could have serious consequences. I love putting this kind of episode together and I hope that you enjoy the kaleidoscopic sounds that emerge from the throats of these deep-voiced pop divas. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Charles Busch, Award-Winning Playwright and Drag Performer, Author, “Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy”About Harvey's guest:Today's guest, Charles Busch, occupies a unique and highly acclaimed place in the world of entertainment.   He's a playwright, actor, director, novelist, cabaret performer and drag legend, whose characters evoke the great cinematic actresses of the golden age of Hollywood.   As a young man, his ambition was to have his own theatrical troupe, and write camp, movie-inspired comedies in which he could play the leading lady in drag.  and that he did.   He's written and starred in over 25 plays including “The Divine Sister”, “The Lady in Question”, “Red Scare on Sunset”, “The Tribute Artist”, “The Confession of Lily Dare”, and one of my all time favourites, “Pardon my Inquisition or Kiss the Blood Off my Castanets”, starring our guest in the dual roles of the tempestuous spitfire prostitute Maria Garbanzo and her look-alike, the tragic noblewoman the Marquesa del Drago.  And I can't resist mentioning his hilariously camp and heartwarming classic Christmas show, “Times Square Angel”, which has been performed annually for over 30 years.    But there can be no question that in the world of theatre, our guest is best known for 2 of his hit plays: “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom”, which is one of the longest running plays in the history of Off-Broadway; and his smash long-running Broadway hit, “The Tale of the Allergist's Wife”, which earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Play, and won our guest the Outer Circle Critics' Award for playwrighting.    He also wrote and starred in the film versions of his plays, “Psycho Beach Party” and “Die Mommie Die”, which won him the Best Performance Award at the Sundance Film Festival.  He also directed the film, “A Very Serious Person” starring Polly Bergen, which won an honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival.   On television, for two seasons, he appeared as “Nat Ginzburg” on the highly acclaimed HBO series “OZ”.   He's a well-respected expert in film and theatre history, and he's appeared as a guest programmer and in numerous documentaries for Turner Classic Movies, and he's lectured and conducted master classes at many colleges and universities throughout America.   He's a 2-time MAC award winner, and in 2003, he received a special Drama Desk Award for career achievement as both performer and playwright.  He also received the Flora Roberts Award for Sustained Achievement in the Theatre by the Dramatists' Guild.   He is also the subject of the acclaimed documentary film “The Lady in Question is Charles Busch”.  And his CD, “Charles Busch Live at Feinstein's 54 Below”, is one of the best cabaret albums out there - an absolute joy from beginning to end.     As an author, he wrote an auto-biographical novel in 1995 entitled, “Whores of Lost Atlantis”.   And now, finally, he's released his captivating, witty, insightful and poignant memoir entitled, “Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy”, in which he recounts a life as a trailblazer, lived with authenticity and purpose. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Charles Busch, go to:https://www.charlesbusch.com/https://www.facebook.com/charlesbusch.page https://www.instagram.com/chasbusch/  #CharlesBusch   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

A little bit of a unique episode of the main show this week as Morgan and Jeannine are discussing the original CAPE FEAR (1962) starring Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen!! The uniqueness is that this whole episode is essentially one big installment of DejaView where they compare this movie to Martin Scorsese's 1991 version starring Robert DeNiro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange!! A tough movie to watch due to the subject matter, it is the simplicity of the older version that Morgan and Jeannine both love!! Then Tony opens up about one of the most difficult, and one of the most stressful moments of his career, a moment that almost broke up a duo that was on the verge of taking off. It was their series of performances at the Nevele Hotel, that kept the duo employed. Their performances at that hotel received standing ovations. Big love from everyone, except Lou Walter's, father of Barbara Walters, who didn't give the duo the reaction Tony expected. It was that reaction that almost drove Tony away for good. Episode 4 of the Tony Sandler Podcast picks up where we left off, in the elegant Persian Room on tour with Polly Bergen.  The show recaps Lauren Bacall's desire to "meet" Tony, which leads Tony down a path of memories about Sonny & Cher, Princess Magaret, Nancy Wilson, Lou Rawls and Vincente Minnelli.  This is also the time Sandler & Young get their big break with record deal at Capitol Records. Dave Cavanah helped Tony and Ralph score their first big hit. Listen to Tony tell the story and then hear the song that was all over radios across the nation.  It was a level of fame Ralph Young thought he would never achieve. Tony explains why Ralph was known by friends as "Bad Luck Charlie," and why the tide turned after meeting Tony Sandler.

J. Lee Thompson & Martin Scorsese: Cape Fear  On this week's second episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Ibrahim & I sit down to discuss a B-Movie masterpiece, J. Lee Thompson's 1961 Noir Classic, Cape Fear. Featuring a wonderful cast including Gregory Peck, Polly Bergen, Barrie Chase, Martin Balsam, and Telly Savalas, Thompson fashions a taut, heart-pounding thriller propelled by an incredible performance by Robert Mitchum as convicted rapist Max Cady. Voted one of the greatest villains of all time, Mitchum is truly extraordinary. Almost thirty years later Martin Scorsese would remake this film as an exercise in genre filmmaking that would reunite him for the seventh time with Academy Award winner, Robert De Niro. Along with Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, Joe Don Baker, and cameos from the film's original stars - Gregory Peck, Martin Balsam, and Robert Mitchum this is an exceptional remake even if it happens to come up short in comparison to the original. Take a listen. We hope you have as much fun as we had recording. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. As always thank you so much.

On this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site, Smitty remembers the great TV game show "To Tell The Truth". Both hosts of the game show, Bud Collyer and Gary Moore are recalled, as well as long-time panelists Kitty Carlisle, Peggy Cass, Bill Cullen, Orson Bean, and Polly Bergen. Ian recalls the Golden Age of Television and such shows as "Patterns", "Requiem for a Heavyweight", and "No Time For Sergeants", and their varied stars, Everett Sloan, Jack Palance, and Andy Griffith. All three of these TV shows were later made into motion pictures. Mike remembers a Muntz 4-track tape deck he had in his car years ago, as well as other Muntz tape decks such as the blue light tape player. Also remembered are Earl "Madman" Muntz's stereo stores and his unique sales techniques. Plus an interesting Retro-commercial from Disneyland in late 1963. The Galaxy guys draw parallels from this commercial to the then recent assassination of president John F. Kennedy.
