Have you ever heard of the term, “Stadium Status?” It signifies that someone has reached such a large audience of followers that their fans can fill an entire stadium. I worked in a cafe for 7 years, and I learned that cafe's are where some of the most interesting people hangout. The people with unique opinions, odd beliefs, and fascinating lifestyles. The people who are changing the world. This got me thinking of how cool it would be to have a cafe where the most interesting people would come in, and you could have crazy conversations over a cup of joe. This is where I got the idea for Coffee with Klingman. So WELCOME to my café of interesting conversations with unique individual, about important, absurd, and controversial topics. And of-course, over a cup of coffee ☕ I'm talking with John Brubaker (aka, Coach Bru). From green lawns to green vegetables. In This Podcast: As his wife and youngest daughter began struggling with celiac disease, John Brubaker believed that the pesticides used on vegetables were perhaps weakening their immune systems. This was his entry into organic urban farming. He began small with 20 beds and has been expanding ever since. John is growing numerous crops in his small space, including artichokes and cantaloupe for home, and kale, spinach, beets, radishes and glass gem corn for the Farmers Market. He is finding great success with his natural farming. Don't miss an episode! Click here to sign up for podcast updatesor visit www.urbanfarm.org/podcast John has been working on golf courses for over 35 since the age of 16. He planted thousands of trees and just for fun, would typically have an organic vegetable garden on the golf course for the enjoyment of customers and staff. Along the way he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University in Horticulture. In 2013 his wife and daughters developed digestive issues. Because of this he started growing his own vegetables, built a compost pile, implemented no dig methods, planted for pollinators, introduced beneficial predator insects, and so on. Soon he was giving vegetables to his neighbors and he had become an urban farmer. In 2018 he named his micro farm ‘Straw Hat', rented a booth at a Farmers Market and started selling organic produce. The success was beyond his expectations, incredibly rewarding and now he is planning on retiring from the golf course and going into urban farming full time. Celia Slater is the founder of True North Sports, an organization whose purpose is to challenge coaches to find their True North and coach from “that” place—the most authentic place—that lies within. As part of this endeavor, Celia also runs Camp Elevate, which is a professional development conference for coaches unlike any other. Through True North Sports, Celia also launched the Assistant Coach Immersion Program (ACIP). The ACIP is a unique educational experience that will bring men and women coaches from all sports together. The vision of this program is to develop the next generation of head coaches who will coach from a strong sense of purpose or their authentic True North. Prior to starting True North, Celia was a head women's college basketball coach. As a player, she earned MVP honors during her senior year at Florida State University. True North isn't the first organization that she has founded. She served as the co-founder and Executive Director of both the NCAA Women Coaches Academy (WCA) and The Alliance of Women Coaches (The Alliance). The WCA started as a professional development program and, due largely to Celia’s efforts, soon exploded into a network of women coaches with an ever-growing grant to aid in expansion. Celia is on the current board of Girls Place Inc., a non-profit that serves girls ages 5-18 through after-school programs, athletics, and summer day camp. She is also a graduate of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) Institute for Administrative Advancement, a certified Change Cycle Trainer and a certified facilitator for the Pursuing Victory with Honor Sports Ethics Program. In addition, she is a graduate of the Good Life Project Immersion Program. A Toastmasters International fanatic, Celia has also been involved with the organization for several years and earned her Competent Toastmaster Credential (CTM). Episode 056: Blake Anderson – Trick Plays, Playing Fast, And Having Fun: America’s Most Entrepreneurial Football Coach Blake Anderson is an incredibly interesting learning leader. I’m very fortunate to now call him a friend. He truly understands the value of creativity mixed with hard work and empowering of his players. We are extremely fortunate to have Coach Anderson share his knowledge with US, the loyal listeners of The Learning Leader Show. From John Brubaker on entrepreneur.com: Blake Anderson is one of the few in his profession who is keenly aware that the game has changed. College sports, like business, has entered an era where getting great results isn’t who you know or what you know. It’s about who knows you. To get “known” you’ve got to be different or you’ll be invisible. At a program such as Arkansas State, located in a small town and without the benefit of being the state’s flagship university or being a member of a major conference, great results are contingent on the ability to market better, faster and with less resources. How do you beat the big dogs at their own game with a smaller brand, in a smaller market and/or with a smaller budget? By changing the game. Call it disruptive or guerilla marketing, but creativity has been at the foundation of the team's strategy. Anderson asks his staff the same question each day: What is no one else doing right now that we can pull off? We are all busy. We are all trying to fit in all that we can in a day. The more we do, the more productivity we feel. But what if “busyness is the enemy to your business?” I had the honor to interview Coach Bru or to some John Brubaker. Coach Bru shared his insights on focusing on what matters and about the importance of being a role model to others. A great concept to understand is “Everything you do is contagious” - meaning that what you do others will also do. I think it also applies to what you do presently and how that has a ripple effect for later.
