In this episode of Our Classroom, we have the privilege of welcoming the award-winning author Natalia Sylvester, whose poignant novel "Breathe and Count Back from Ten" gives voice to Veronica, a young girl with hip dysplasia whose dream is to swim freely as a mermaid in Mermaid Cove. In an episode we've aptly titled “Navigating Disability and Dreams,” we'll explore the powerful themes of independence, courage, and the human spirit. Drawing parallels with my own life, we'll delve into the complexities of parenting, as seen through Vero's experience with her protective immigrant parents. As an author who isn't afraid to confront the struggles of disability, empathetic storytelling, and the search for self despite the fractures of immigrant life, Natalia will share how her characters can help shape our understanding and foster much-needed discussions about mental health, chronic pain, and self-advocacy. Together, we'll dive into the symbolism and language of the novel, uncover how students are engaging with its content, and see how Natalia's personal journey intertwines with Veronica's, teaching us all to see ourselves as beautifully whole. So, get ready for an episode that swims against the current of conventional narratives. Here's to learning and embracing the multiple layers of our existence, one story at a time. Natalia Sylvester is the Pura Belpré- and Schneider Family-honor winning author of the young adult novel Breathe and Count Back from Ten, and the award-winning author of the young adult novel Running and the adult novels Everyone Knows You Go Home and Chasing the Sun. Jake and Ron welcome Pura Belpré Award Winner and Bram Stoker Nominee Vincent Tirado, author of the fantastic horror novel We Don't Swim Here!Bronwyn is only supposed to be in rural Hillwoods for a year. Her grandmother is in hospice, and her father needs to get her affairs in order. And they're all meant to make some final memories together. Except Bronwyn is miserable. Her grandmother is dying, everyone is standoffish, and she can't even go swimming. All she hears are warnings about going in the water, despite a gorgeous lake. And a pool at the abandoned rec center. And another in the high school basement.Anais tries her hardest to protect Bronwyn from the shadows of Hillwoods. She follows her own rituals to avoid any unnecessary attention—and if she can just get Bronwyn to stop asking questions, she can protect her too. The less Bronwyn pays attention to Hillwoods, the less Hillwoods will pay attention to Bronwyn. She doesn't get that the lore is, well, truth. History. Pain. The living aren't the only ones who seek retribution when they're wronged. But when Bronwyn does more exploring than she should, they are both in for danger they couldn't expect.https://read.sourcebooks.com/young-adult/we-dont-swim-here.htmlhttps://bookshop.org/Vincent TiradoVincent Tirado is a non-binary Afro-Latine Bronx native. Scholastic Press is proud to publish COMING UP CUBAN: RISING PAST CASTRO'S SHADOW by 15‐time Emmy® Award winner and Pura Belpré honoree Sonia Manzano (on sale August 2, 2022). Offering a fresh look at and examining the impact of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, this unforgettable and crucial story addresses the inner lives and growth of four children from very different walks of life as they experience major social, political, and cultural upheaval. In the wake of Fidel Castro's new regime, Ana, Miguel, Zulema, and Juan-children of different ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds-learn to find a place for themselves in a world forever changed. In a tumultuous moment of history, we see the lasting effects of a revolution in Havana, the countryside, Miami, and New York. Through these snapshot stories, we are reminded that regardless of any tumultuous times, we are all forever connected in our humanity. "Social upheavals affect everyone. I wanted to write a novel that examined the impact the 1959 Cuban Revolution had on four children. Through these four separate life stories, I hope our readers see how interconnected we all are, regardless of any tumultuous times we might be living in. Scholastic, with their everlasting focus on diverse books, are the perfect publishers," said Manzano. In this novel, two of the kids make it out of Cuba, one of them flown out as part of a program called Operation Peter Pan and brought to Miami. Over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors were sent to the USA under this system by frightened parents who hoped to protect them from the real or rumored Castro policies. Two are left behind, where poverty and uncertainty lurk. Perfect for fans of Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan and Refugee by Alan Gratz, COMING UP CUBAN imparts resonant and interwoven tales of children enduring trying moments in history, as they grow through these emotionally‐charged experiences. The book is also the first in a new four‐book publishing program between Manzano and Scholastic.

An inspiring picture book biography of storyteller, puppeteer, and New York City’s first Puerto Rican librarian, who championed bilingual literature. When she came to America in 1921, Pura Belpré carried the cuentos folklóricos of her Puerto Rican homeland. Finding a new home at the New York Public Library as a bilingual assistant, she turned her popular retellings into libros and spread story seeds across the land. Today, these seeds have grown into a lush landscape as generations of children and storytellers continue to share her tales and celebrate Pura’s legacy.Book By: Anika Aldamuy DeniseRead By: Erin Yeschin
There are countless individuals working throughout publishing to center historically marginalized voices. Perhaps none do it more publicly or with greater lasting impact than those serving on award committees through the Association for Library Service to Children, or ALSC. That’s the branch of the American Library Association responsible for awarding medals such as the Newbery, the Caldecott, the Coretta Scott King, the Pura Belpré, the Stonewall, and many others. These medals often have direct correlation to what librarians purchase for their libraries. These medals drive book sales. These medals help to assure the book’s availability in print for years to come. Today’s episode features the 2020 Sydney Taylor Book Award Chair along with a handful of the award winners named by the Association of Jewish Libraries, an affiliate of the ALA. I’ve linked to the full list of winners and honors in the show notes and I encourage you to check out this exceptional list of books recognized by the committee. Here’s the second half of my two part interview with authors, C. S. E. Cooney and Carlos Hernandez! In my last post for my paid subscribers, I talked about the common advice that creative people should choose one niche in which to specialize. In the first part of this interview, we explored how ignoring that advice can actually help creativity grow stronger, but in this second part we’re diving into the question of how to narrow your focus in order to finish projects, even when they’re really hard and you feel stuck. Image Description: Sal and Gabi Break the Universe and The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria by Carlos Hernandez and Jack O’ the Hills, How to Flirt in Faerieland and Other Wild Rhymes, Bone Swans, and Desdemona and the Deep by C. S. E. Cooney. Carlos’s Sal and Gabi Break the Universe won the Pura Belpré Medal for Latinx creators whose work portrays Latinx experiences well for young readers! Carlos also has a story in The Mythic Dream, an anthology edited by Navah Wolfe and Dominik Parisien. You can find Carlos on Twitter as @WriteTeachPlay.Claire’s Bone Swans won the World Fantasy Award for Best Collection! Her novella, Desdemona and the Deep is wonderful, too, and I am not just saying that because the title character was named after my late cat, Desdemona (but she really was! She is even called Desdemonster sometimes, which we also called my cat!) Claire has also narrated over 100 audiobooks, and has an alter ego as a rock star named Brimstone Rhine. Both of them will be at Boskone in February in Boston, Massachusetts, and so will I! In fact, we’ll all be performing together in one of Claire’s Brimstone Rhine concerts, AND we’ll be reading excerpts of our work together. I’ll post my full Boskone schedule soon, so you’ll know where to find us!Technical note: If you are reading these show notes in email or on the web, you don’t have to listen in a web browser! Here’s part one of a two part interview with authors, C. S. E. Cooney and Carlos Hernandez!Claire and Carlos are both multi-talented creative powerhouses. Here’s a picture of some of their books:Image Description: Sal and Gabi Break the Universe and The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria by Carlos Hernandez and Jack O’ the Hills, How to Flirt in Faerieland and Other Wild Rhymes, Bone Swans, and Desdemona and the Deep by C. S. E. Cooney. Carlos’s Sal and Gabi Break the Universe just won the Pura Belpré Medal for Latinx creators whose work portrays Latinx experiences well for young readers! And when I say he just won this award, I mean this happened literally yesterday at the American Library Association’s Midwinter conference in Philadelphia. How exciting! In 2016 Claire’s Bone Swans won the World Fantasy Award for Best Collection. But they don’t JUST write books! Both of them are poets, musicians, screenwriters, game writers, and more! Claire has also narrated over 100 audiobooks, and has an alter ego as a rock star named Brimstone Rhine. In my last post for my paid subscribers, I talked about the common advice that creative people should choose one niche in which to specialize. In this interview, we’re exploring just how many grains of salt you can take that advice with.
