Then, let's continue with the conclusion of The Shadow of the Wind (10:45). Daniel unravels the tragic end of Julián Carax, uncovers a heartbreaking love story buried beneath layers of deception, vengeance, and sacrifice. In a climactic confrontation, long-hidden truths come to light, offering both closure and redemption to those haunted by the past. With its breathtaking twists and a profoundly satisfying resolution, The Shadow of the Wind leaves readers fascinated, proving that some stories—and loves—can never be erased. We then discuss our final verdict and if we'd recommend this book (11:30). This week, we're discussing the conclusion of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Let's get LIT! “Life is a wheel and humanity has been through countless cycles of ups and downs. The things that seem so dire now won't be this dire forever. Eventually, there is an upswing. Born in Rosario, Argentina, in the midst and then long shadow of the Dictatorship years, she learned early on the power of hope and the enduring strength of the human spirit. She reflects on her experience as the eldest sister in a family facing constant scarcity of resources and on how her school life impacted her perspective on a young woman's potential.

Today I sat down with Éric Chacour, a Canadian novelist born to Egyptian parents, to discuss his stunning debut novel. What I Know About You has captivated readers in its original French, winning the prestigious Prix Femina des Lycéens, and been translated into numerous languages, and with Pablo Strauss' 2024 translation, now makes its grand entrance into the English-speaking world. Eric's novel, which he spent 10 years working on before it was published in 2023, is a richly woven tapestry of family, love, loss, and the queer identity. Set against the backdrop of a changing Egypt, the story shines a light on the tension between personal desires and cultural expectations, offering readers a nuanced look at what it means to belong in different settings. In this episode, as always, Eric has selected for us the four books which have most strongly influenced his life and literary journey – from tales of mysterious libraries to the adventures of dashing heroes. But, we also spend some time getting to grips with Eric's creative process, the inspirations behind his storytelling, and what it means to write a novel that crosses both geographical and emotional borders. I was so interested to learn about his path to becoming a novelist, from youthful inspiration to the sometimes challenging reality of life as a published author, and how Canadian national treasure Celine Dion fits into the picture. This was a great chat, and I've definitely come away from it with my mind expanded. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading! Eric Chacour's four books were: The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafón (2001) The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas (1844) Promise at Dawn, Romain Gary (1960) The Orphan Muses, Michel Marc Bouchard (1989)

Heidi Backes joins Alan to discuss the haunted houses, silent spaces and traumatic memories often seen in post-Franco gothic fiction, such as in Carlos Ruiz Zafón's international bestseller The Shadow of the Wind.' Her new book Spectral Spain looks at how Gothic literature has become a leading genre in contemporary Spain - one capable of confronting the traumatic memories of the country's past. It is a study of multiple manifestations of individual and collective trauma in texts written after the transition, which will assist readers' understanding of the relationships between Gothic fear, trauma, and spectrality.

The dynamics of deciding which books a designer works on. Freelance vs In-house: Factors that determine who gets to design the top titles. The lesser-known “silent auction” approach some publishers adopt. Whether book cover designers really read the whole book. Who holds the final decision about a book cover. There is a time to pause and a time to act. We explored this distinction in last month's Haven Theme Kota. In this episode of The Gentle Rebel Podcast, I share some of the ideas that came out of our conversation. "Books are mirrors: You only see in them what you already have inside you." Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind I recently chatted with my friend, Adam Kawalek about what it means to "coach for insight". As coaches, we are committed to the principle that insights, revelations, and answers don't come from the outside-in. They aren't imparted by the coach. They are brought to life from the inside-out. And the coach's questions, reflections, and invitations assist this process. Coaching For Insight Inspiration is like a candle inside us, waiting to be rekindled. An "aha!" moment, doesn't happen when something completely new arrives. It's when something outside us strikes the match that catches the wick within, which then illuminates the torch that casts its light on the environment around it. I love that as a description of coaching. We play with matches (not something I normally advocate), and see what it ready to catch a spark inside us. Expectation vs Expectancy There is a difference between expectation and expectancy. Expectation is a weight that can stop us from seeing things as they really are. Expectancy is a nerve-tickling buzz. A helium spirit. It is ready to flow through the contours of this landscape without judgement. It is flexible, adaptable, and prepared to make something memorable out of something undesirable. The pause of expectancy allows us to receive what is there. The push of expectation is an entitled demand to repeat what is no longer necessarily there. It burdens the present with judgement and comparison based on a story from the past. Making Inspired Decisions Where do you feel insights in your body? Our bodies tell us a lot about intuitive responses to ideas, people, and environments. We don't think twice about using terms like "gut feelings", "broken heart", "sinking feeling", "butterflies in the stomach", and "jelly legs". These describe physical responses to something going on around us. The body might say yes or no but the mind rationalises its way to another decision. In our Kota conversation, we talked about learning to hear what the body is saying so that we can make more informed choices and inspired decisions. Under-thinking and Overthinking Under-thinking can occur when we only listen to the body and don't pause to ask whether the uncomfortable sensation is part of doing something important to us. For example, feeling nervous before a performance. If I under-think the situation, I might follow the urge to remove myself from it, which in turn stops me from accessing its meaningful rewards. Overthinking happens when we get ahead of ourselves and worry about things beyond our control. Fear of failure/success, logistical anxieties, and catastrophising everything that could go wrong - however unlikely - can turn an exciting opportunity into a pressurised ball of dread. It's important to maintain an open line of communication between these thoughts and feelings. Connecting with the small glimmers of joy, holding lightly, and reminding ourselves that this feeling will pass. I feel this strongly because it is important. It will not break or make me. I feel creatively energised and alive. It is a chance to play, connect, and do something I love. And if all else fails, we might anticipate the beautiful feeling that is awaiting us when it's over. The out-breath of relief. Where do you feel insight? Is there a difference between toward and away from insight feelings in your physical body? When something is an invitation toward a desirable place, where do you feel it? Shoulders? Stomach? Lungs? Legs? I get it in my belly. How would you describe that feeling? Flutter, leaping, twirling,
"Waiting is the rust of the soul." - Carlos Ruiz Zafón "Waiting is the art of hoping." - Luc de Clapiers Jairus, in this passage, is in a desperate hurry - He's trying to get Jesus to his dying 12 year old daughter. The crowd was making the going slow & then precious minutes were lost in a strange healing of a woman with a 12 year old disease. Today we learn some of God's purposes in waiting. There are many and Jairus would learn many of them on this journey of Faith over Fear.

Pruébalo y me cuentas.

For me some of the most satisfying episodes we do are when we talk to book lovers from other countries. What is it like to be a book lover from far-reaching places around the world? In the past we have talked to readers and writers from Ireland, Somalia, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. This week, we are headed to Croatia to speak with Ivana Murk who gives us a window into her life as a child growing up, learning to read both the Cyrillic alphabet which Slavic languages are based on and the Latin alphabet. She learned English in school starting in 3rd grade and now she now reads books in both Croatian and English. We talk with her about Croatian authors who you might want to find translations for if possible, why the skill of a book translator is so important, and what authors you have probably heard of who are particularly popular in her country. We feel it would be helpful to give you just a brief little summary of Croatian history in the last 50 years that is most relevant to this episode. Croatia was a part of the former Yugoslavia, which also included Serbia, Bosnia, Hercegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia, and Montenegro. In 1991, Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia. This did not happen peacefully. This was followed by the Bosnia War from 1992-1995 which pitted Croatians, Bosnians, and Serbians against each other and has been called the bloodiest event in Europe since World War II. Geographically, Croatia is very close to Italy to the West by way of the Adriatric Sea, Austria and Hungary to the north, and Bosnia to the West.
