Anthony and Laurie start the podcast with a quick look at the Razzie Awards’ multiple nominations for the Star Trek: Section 31 streaming movie and some of the chatter around Starfleet Academy, which includes insults from blowhard politicians and excellent rebuttals from Gina Yashere on CNN and Whoopi Goldberg on The View. Then they review Starfleet Academy‘s third episode, “Vitus Reflux,” which definitely leans into the whole YA vibe. After that, they play Tony’s brand-new interview with Academy‘s Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance). Then Laurie gives a quick Trek Talks update and they both discuss the recent William Shatner-eating-cereal-in-his-car discourse.

Our exit today has us realizing that we're not a girl but not yet a woman. This week, we are talking about the Britney Spears vehicle Crossroads, written by Shonda Rhimes and directed by Tamra Davis. While we spend a lot of time discussing Britney Spears (and defending her from our greatest enemy, the Razzie Awards), we also talk Shondaland, the Nintendo Power Glove, road trip movies, karaoke song choices, punk rock, bizarre age differences, Joan Jett, movies as commercials, Glitter, musicians turned actors, and the real life parallels of this film. Plus, Ross is baffled by the "reality" of the film and even more so by Tripp's bizarre film recommendation. Freddy Got Fingered (2001) was chosen by Supporter and friend of the show Blake, and it stands as one of the most infamous, chaotic, and downright bewildering productions ever funded by a major Hollywood studio. Directed by and starring Tom Green at the height of his MTV shock-comedy fame, the film was conceived as a vehicle to capture — and escalate — his unpredictable, confrontational brand of humor. Fox initially expected a quirky, outrageous teen comedy, but Green pushed the project into a surreal, boundary-smashing experiment, gleefully testing how far studio executives were willing to go. With a budget of around $14 million, he was given surprising creative freedom, shooting scenes that baffled executives but perfectly embodied his anti-comedy sensibilities.Behind the scenes, the production became something of a Hollywood legend. Tom Green committed fully to every bizarre creative impulse, often rewriting or improvising scenes on the day of shooting, much to the confusion of cast and crew. Actors like Rip Torn and Julie Hagerty were brought into the madness, delivering straight-faced performances amid escalating absurdity. Studio executives, increasingly horrified by what they were seeing, considered interfering but ultimately allowed Green to finish the film exactly as he envisioned it. Upon release, Freddy Got Fingered was critically savaged and won multiple Razzie Awards — including Worst Picture — but over the years it has gained a cult following, celebrated by some as a piece of surrealist outsider art wrapped in the guise of a studio comedy. If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryPrepare yourself… for a comedy that went too far, then kept going. When Gord Brody, a wannabe animator with a vivid imagination and zero impulse control, leaves home to chase his dreams, chaos follows in every direction. From catastrophic career moves to catastrophic family moments, Gord's journey spirals into a whirlwind of wild gags, screaming matches, and deeply questionable decisions — all delivered with the enthusiasm of a man who has absolutely nothing to lose.Freddy Got Fingered — a film so outrageous, so unhinged, and so defiantly stupid… you'll wonder how it ever got made.Fun FactsTom Green personally promoted the film in extreme ways, including arriving at the Razzies to accept his awards in person - and playing harmonica on stage until producers dragged him off.The film's infamous “Daddy, would you like some sausage?” scene has become one of the most quoted and memed moments in early-2000s comedy.Freddy Got Fingered was Tom Green's feature directorial debut, following the success of The Tom Green Show on MTV.Rip Torn agreed to the role because he admired Green's fearlessness, even though Torn described some days on set as “completely insane.”Several of the movie's props and costumes, including the sausage-pulley rig, were built by Green himself.Despite being critically panned, the movie later became a favourite of filmmakers like Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim, who praised its “anti-comedy genius.”The initial test screenings reportedly caused walkouts, but studio executives decided to keep most scenes intact because Green insisted the discomfort was the point. The film includes several cameos from MTV personalities of the era, tying it directly to early-2000s pop culture.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
Ian and David crank things up to eleven with another---Nevermind. Not gonna finish that hackneyed joke. But it feeds right into today's double-feature review of Spinal Tap 2: The End Continues and Megadoc. What do a legacy sequel about a fake British rock band and a documentary about filming one of cinema's most notorious flops have to do with one another? More than you might expect, as we discover in this spoilerific deep dive.Spinal Tap 2 picks up with Nigel, David, and Derek reuniting for one last (contractually obligated) concert. But do they still have "it", and do cameos by legends like Sirs Paul McCartney and Elton John elevate the absurdist mockumentary humor--or simply drag it out?Mike Figgis' Megadoc finds the director chronicling the making-of chaos behind Francis Ford Coppola's Razzie Award-winning retro-futurist drama, Megalopolis. From difficult actors to incomplete ideas to entire departments being wiped out on a whim, the film drags shadowy Hollywood mystique into the daylight (for better and worse).Join us for an examination of two movies that don't quite work--but whose seeds of greatness were trampled on by ego, age, and cynical nostalgia!Support Kicking the Seat on Patreon, watch us on YouTube, and follow us at:XLetterboxdInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Spinal Tap 2 (2025) trailer.Watch the Megadoc (2025) trailer.Keep up with all of David Fowlie's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Plus! “Armageddon” was not only the highest-grossing film of 1998, but it also earned 4 Oscar nominations. Yet that same flick was named the worst movie of the year by Roger Ebert and nominated for 7 Razzie Awards. How could a film beloved by so many also receive such harsh criticism? That's just one of the many points we drill down on in this fun episode on the 1998 blockbuster “Armageddon.” What inspired the writers to add the romantic subplot between Grace and A.J.? Which pieces of space equipment were real, and what prompted NASA to let “Armageddon” use them? What's the backstory behind Aerosmith's #1 single “I Don't Want to Miss a Thing”? And just what did Ben Affleck say on that famous DVD commentary that resurfaced–and went viral– in 2016? Thank you to Jim for his top-of-the-episode shout out! The summer is here! We are but two weeks away from the official summer equinox, but it already feels hot and sassy outside. This summer, The Deucecast Movie Show is looking back at years prior to the show's beginning. As we approach our 700th episode, leading up to it we will be doing a series of Top Tens -- each one focusing in on a particular year. Mikey, d$, and #XLessDrEarl invite in Friend of the Show Garrison Ryfun, and G has picked The Year of Our Lord 2006. We run through the year - the bigger news stories of the year, the top ten films, the Oscar noms and winners, even the Razzie Award highlights, plus where we exactly were in 2006... Mikey and Dave freshly married (though not to each other... not yet anyway), Dr Earl building hospitals in the Baja California dessert, and Garrison being the only kid in KinderCare who was familiar with Bong Joon Ho. For the most part, it's a surprisingly good week for January movies here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with the one that's not so good: "Flight Risk," and even that's not completely terrible. Mark Wahlberg stars as a pilot flying a U.S. Marshal (Michelle Dockery) and a fugitive (Topher Grace) to Anchorage, but the skies aren't so friendly. Mel Gibson directs, which you'd never know from the trailers. In theaters. Then, we loved "Presence," the latest experimental lark from Steven Soderbergh. It's a haunted house movie where the ghost is the camera. Soderbergh makes clever, elegant use of his first-person perspective. In theaters. We also catch up with the comedy "One of Them Days," which is a total delight. Keke Palmer and SZA have terrific chemistry as roommates who must come up with the rent on their run-down Los Angeles apartment by the end of the day, or they'll be evicted. It felt really good to laugh this week. In theaters. Finally, we did our usual Friday Movie News LIVE! Send us a Text Message.Don't catch dysentery on the Oregon Trail. What spelled doom for McDonaldland? Some of the most accomplished musicians nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award.Episode 153 brings all the nostalgia you could possibly want. The show kicks off with a favorite memory of many school-aged kids of the 1980s and 1990s. Oregon Trail was more than just a fun game that taught kids to avoid dysentery and to watch out for broken wagon wheels on the prairie. It was an educational game that helped teach critical thinking and encourage social interaction. We will take a deeper look at this classic game. Years ago fast food restaurants catered toward the younger generation with colorful characters and bright cheery facades of their buildings. No establishment epitomized this as much as McDonald's. In the 1970s they revolutionized the way fast food was sold with their unique, and a bit trippy, McDonaldland. Then slowly it faded away. We go way Back In the Day to look at the events that led to the demise of McDonaldland.Even the greatest of the great can have off days or perceived off days. In the new Top 5 we will look at some of the most beloved and accomplished musical acts ever, who also just happened to have been nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Song. There is also a new This Week In History and Time Capsule centered around the first official Tom and Jerry cartoon. For more great content become a subscriber on Patreon!Helpful Links from this EpisodeThe Lady of the Dunes.comPurchase My New Book Cape Cod Beyond the Beach! In My Footsteps: A Cape Cod Travel Guide(2nd Edition)Hooked By Kiwi - Etsy.comWear Your Wish.com - Clothing, Accessories, and moreDJ Williams MusicKeeKee's Cape Cod KitchenChristopher Setterlund.comCape Cod Living - Zazzle StoreSubscribe on YouTube!Initial Impressions 2.0 BlogShelter of the Monument Book - Yvonne DeSousa.comThe Oregon Trail GameListen to Episode 152 here Support the Show.

Hello listeners! In this episode (also a dated recording as you'll quickly note!) we are sticking up for the little guy. And by little guy, we mean mostly movies made by big studios and starring big actors that just didn't perform as well as they'd hope. We're each drafting five movies that won the Golden Razzberry award for Worst Film with the goal of making the most watchable collection of five films. If you had to, which team would you watch all five movies from? Listen in and then let us know! Vote for the winner here! (Select this episode in Spotify to vote!) Poor Things is a high-brow steam-punk fantasy which just garnered the second largest number of Oscar nominations for 2023 including BEST PICTURE and has received universal acclaim for this surrealist tale of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone, also nominated for Best Actress), a young woman in Victorian England (?) who has recently been reborn/revived via a series of questionable experiments by a mad scientist Dr. Godwin played by Willem Dafoe. We follow her on several adventures throughout Europe as she explores what it means to be a free-thinking human being. It was directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos whose previous film The Favourite also garnered several Oscar nominations five years ago.Showgirls is a trashy exploitation melodrama which was universally panned upon initial release in '95 while also flopping notoriously at the box office, also receiving multiple Razzie Awards for that year. This story focuses on Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley, who was blamed for its failure and whose career never quite recovered afterwards) who is a wandering dancer (?) who stumbles into Las Vegas seeking fame and fortune, working her way up from an exotic dancer at a sleazy local club to an all-out phenomenon leading THE premiere exotic dance show in Vegas! We follow her character as she navigates through various dangerous and tawdry situations towards becoming.....well it's not really clear. :o This film was directed by Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven who had recently given us Basic Instinct and Total Recall....though from this film on, he was never able to find that level of success in the US again. Now what could these two films possibly have in common? Well more than you would think, especially the extreme reactions they each seem to elicit from audiences... It's the second half of the first round, and some of our toughest choices yet, as we struggle with how comebacks used to look in a monoculture; human Razzie Awards; the comeback-osity of an "X featuring Y" track; why J. Lo never seems to be having fun; weird H.W. Bush presidency detritus; returns from '70s banishment; and what exactly we have to do to get fake fade-outs in pop songs outlawed. Throw on a Nauset Warriors ringer tee; it's time for an all-new MASTAS. Our intro is an LL Byrne J mash-up, and our outro is the Bee Gees. Silicon Valley Bank abruptly shut down on Friday, in what was the second biggest bank failure in U.S. history. The bank serviced many startups and other tech companies, and the federal government is now taking steps to protect its deposits, and stop a potential financial crisis. The 95th Academy Awards were held Sunday night, though the ceremony has been criticized over its lack of diversity.
