These days, I need to chill. Relax. Contemplate. What I didn't think I needed was a swim in a virtual fish tank with all manner of manta rays, swordfish, and sharks. But that's exactly what Abu offers. A wonderful, frictionless aquatic experience that hides a rich lore and story beneath it's seemingly simple waves. But I didn't get any of that. I had fun playing with the fishies. Originally aired on Episode 75 of Mage Cast, this episode features The Well Red Mage and I as we discuss this title and diverge into our usual conversations about games, art, critique, and stabbing fish with plastic spears purchased at Walmart.Link to the original, uncut episode: https://magecast.buzzsprout.com/199140/10332470My Twitter: @agamerlooksat40My Facebook: facebook.com/agamerlooksat40My Insta: @agamerlooksat40My Patreon: patreon.com/agamerlooksat40My Email: agamerlooksat40@gmail.comMy Phone Number: Ehhhhh, not gonna happen. :-DSupport the show

Sometimes you just can't help but take a look at something you missed on purpose. Like here, where I wouldn't normally look at arcade only releases. But it's Spider-Man and someone asked about it and who am I to let the fans down? Listen in as The Well Red Mage from Mage Cast joins the show to take a look at the Spider-Man arcade game that so many of us missed growing up. Which sucks because we could have had some more 4 player action going. Learn such things as: What does Namor have to do with any of this? Did this game even stand a chance with what else was coming out around the same time? Why haven't we seen a home console port of this one yet? And so much more! Moses Norton, the Well-Red Mage himself, is my guest for this interview episode of Philosophiraga. We talk right and wrong, Batman, truffle oil, parenthood, the difference between academic philosophy and just sort of doing philosophy out in the world, how to have a good conversation with just about anyone, the secret bad ending of Tetris, the distinction between 'favourite' and 'best', and whether Rob Zombie could in fact rob zombies.Mostly, though, we talk about morality and video games. If you're a fan of the show, I'm given to understand that feeding the algorithms by leaving ratings or reviews on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser is a super helpful thing you can do, so... go do that. In this episode, The ABXY Mage and The Well-Red Mage talk about different ways to pronounce various video game names, places, beasts, etc. They start with a simple example of Mar-ee-o vs. Mary-o and how location can determine how you pronounce different terms. Then, they move on to voice acting and how some people still manage to mispronounce words that are said, out loud, in games. They touch on the occasional instance when voice acting, years later, can betray what you were so sure was the correct pronunciation, which (unsurprisingly) leads to another Tidus vs. Teedus argument from Red.That argument then segues into ABXY's similar argument about the pronunciation of Ivalice from Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII. They then debate the difference between the Tidus and Ivalice arguments. Finally moving on, they get into Final Fantasy IV characters, EarthBound, YouTube inaccuracies, Final Fantasy VII, more EarthBound, and then more Final Fantasy VII. As you may--by now--expect, this is only the first part of the conversation.Check us out on The Well-Red Mage!
In the conclusion of the dialogue between The ABXY Mage and his legendary and loquacious friend, The Well-Red Mage, they begin by spending a little more time on their favorite--and the objectively greatest--game ever: Chrono Trigger. This bags another funny story from Red about a mispronunciation from his past.Next, they get into the many interesting names and locations in Final Fantasy IX, a game which The Well-Red Mage definitely knows more about than The ABXY Mage. Speaking of games Red knows more about, he also explains how to know the definitive way to say Pokémon names. His final lesson takes them to the 'aga' and 'aja' spells from some later Final Fantasy games.Somewhere in there, they talk about some miscellaneous game names as well as how to say "xeno." Back to the world of Final Fantasy, they discuss cities from VII, Aeris vs. Aerith, and Cait Sith. Finally, they end with a humorous debate and quite a bit of joking around and laughing. As always, it was a great time.Check us out on The Well-Red Mage!
In part two of the discussion with The ABXY Mage and The Well-Red Mage, they talk about how they mispronounced different video game words when they were stupid, little kids. Some of these include Ryu, from Street Fighter, the difference between mana and manna (and how you pronounce each of them), and a hilarious Mega Man story from Red. This, later, leads to more Mega Man related talk, mostly about Dr. Wily. But first, they talk about a bunch of different Zelda names and terms including that weird instrument nobody had ever heard of before the N64. They also discuss the possible differences between Hyrule and Hylia, instead of just researching it.Finally, to wrap up this part of their conversation, they talk Pokemon; so many weird names. Since ABXY has never played Pokemon, they play a game where guesses how various names are pronounced. However, before this, they talk about how who is better, Squirtle or Bulbasaur. Unfortunately, due to recording issues and editing needs, they had to cut the part where Red admits that ABXY was right and Squirtle is clearly the superior Pokemon. He definitely said it though, no matter what he tries to tell you now.Check us out on The Well-Red Mage!
In this episode, The ABXY Mage and The Well-Red Mage start by discussing iconic songs from multiple games, franchises, and composers. We then move on to music and game genres and how they mix as well as games that attempt to incorporate silence into their soundtracks. And, finally, we close with some favorites and recommendations.Check us out on The Well-Red Mage!
In the second episode, The ABXY Mage and The Well-Red Mage move into Nintendo’s impact on video game music, notable and early composers and songs, and their mutual-favorite game composer.Check us out on The Well-Red Mage!
In the first episode, The ABXY Mage and The Well-Red Mage discuss where the idea for Side Quests came from, where it would like to go, public perception of video game music, earliest soundtracks, and the C64.Check us out on The Well-Red Mage!
Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss returning to MMOs, especially through the lens of Final Fantasy XIV in prep for the upcoming expansion Shadowbringers (it launches July 2). What in particular makes us start back into games like this that we know tend to be major time sucks? For Beej, it's mainly friends. Having a social group to be a part of means a lot to him. And so does being able to find hella cool gear that makes his Red Mage look amazeballs. For Void, it's content, content, and more content. He dives in and becomes a game designer's worst nightmare. He consumes and devours the content as quickly as possible, then moves on to the next meal. Err, we mean game. He comes back to MMOs like FFXIV when many patches of content are released, and he can power through it all without having to wait on most releases. He basically plays MMOs at the beginnings and ends of expansions -- that's when there's the most content available. He has a game dev friend who says he's a Content Locust, and that's the most perfect description of how he plays games that we've ever heard. It's dead-on, 100% accurate. We discuss what it is about FFXIV that keeps us coming back, as well as things that keep us going back to other MMOs like World of Warcraft. Or in Beej's case...not going back to WoW Classic. It's a cycle for both of us, and we decided to dig into what makes it that way. Let us know what the MMO cycle looks like for you! Weekly Geekery For geekery this week started a new Dragon Quest podcast called DragonQuest.FM that you can listen to right now. Can you guess what it's about? He beat Dragon Quest IX, watched Dead to Me and Kim’s Convenience on Netflix and got over one heck of a stomach bug. Void has some lawn mower stories, he puts his dad on blast (heh heh heh), and goes through the prep for the Final Fantasy V Four Job Fiesta that's coming up. If you haven't done it before or heard us talk about it, he gives a great rundown in this episode. And most importantly, he found like 6 anime series that he really and truly enjoys! The main one being Restaurant to Another World. Support the Podcast on Patreon You can go to https://patreon.com/geektogeekcast to support the podcast, and you can get some cool stuff, too. When last we left our characters. They found Phandalin in ruins and culprit is a Red Mage named Sasha who commands an undead dragon. Our heroes also found that Sasha was opening a portal, and on the other side of this portal was Orcus, the demon lord of undeath, and his countless minions. We join Tiri, Viktor, Vladislav and Matilda where they left off, in the middle of a portal crashing dragon fight. Season 3 is run using the D&D 5e Ruleset created by Wizards of the Coast. They weren't alone, a new ally emerges within the shadows of their cell, Matilda Beckett, a fiery Red Mage with a flare for destruction. Together they plot to escape their dark elf prison. Our heroes were interrogated by the prison's warden, Mistress Ivara, and told that all their magical weapons will be sold. Lets join them as Matilda has decided to pick a fight with the Mistress and her most trusted elite soldiers. Its been a long year since the heroics of Phandalin. The Loot and Dagger Mercenary company thrived after ending the torment caused by The Black Spider. Their glory would be short lived as skirmishes with the dark elves began to blister areas around Faerun. They seem to be taking slaves more than conquering and spent a great deal of effort acquiring artifacts of power from the surface world. Lord Sheriff Viktor Sinclair took it upon himself to use his noble connections to strengthen the town of Phandalin after defeating the evil that threatened to tear it apart. He also took Twix the goblin as an apprentice Gentleman. A most noble path to walk were you to ask anyone from great city Mistport. Deputy Grit Toughnstuff, who works secretly as Fang of the Zhentarium, has led the Loot and Dagger Mercenary company to great financial heights thanks in part to acquisition of the Phandalin Mining Guild. The Drow surface raids proved to be bad for business, and using his underworld connections within the Zhentarium and a considerable portion of his personal wealth, he helped fund an army to fight against the dark elf incursions. It didn't take long before Viktor and Grit joined forces again, as a great battle was fought at an Drow outpost somewhere to the far north. A trap was sprung. A cave in found Viktor and Grit separated from their forces and each other. Days they wondered and deeper they were plunged into the Underdark. There's also someone else we should mention. Matilda Becket, a curious Red Mage turned scavenger of ruins and ancient graves. She left her island enclave years ago, searching for something many believe doesn't exist. Fate found her wondering deep underground and in the clutches of dangers that hide in its darkness. Her fate crashes head first into the path of the Loot and Dagger Mercenary company. We begin their story. Season 2 is run using the D&D 5e Ruleset created by Wizards of the Coast and uses the Out of the Abyss compaign book as framework to help tell the story. FFXIV Has It’s MMO Claws In Us In this episode: Final Fantasy is one of our favorite series. We play them and replay them, and recently, FFXIV grabbed both of us and sank it's grubby little MMO claws right into us. While neither of us tend to be big MMOers these days, FFXIV has so much going for it that we really can't resist it. FFXIV is in full swing for both of us in the middle of the summer gaming slump. We’ve been playing at pretty much the exclusion to all else for the past few weeks. Hear us geek out over an MMO for the first time in a long time! We talk about what makes this MMO special (aside from it being Final Fantasy), what it does right in terms of modernizing the genre, and the kinds of things that keep us coming back. The mechanics feel different and polished in a way that other MMOs just feel spammy. We talk about the characters that draw us in, how it's more of a Final Fantasy game first than an MMO, and how despite neither of us having played the 1.0 version, that we feel the game has a history and story that's rich and we're a part of. We discuss different classes like Red Mage and Bard and how the length of time we've played and when we started has influenced how we feel about the game. Beej plays for the social aspect, while Void plays for the story, but they can meet in the middle and see the value in how it all ties together and makes a fantastic game that everyone can enjoy. Next week, we are going to dig in on the expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood, so if you have any questions or comments, please email, tweet, or send them to us on the subreddit! We want to talk about what you want to hear about! Weekly Geekery Beej got back to running, got hooked on mobile Final Fantasy games (FFV and VI), and made some bad trampoline decisions. Void watched a bunch of different things, rewatched some other movies and TV, and determined the best of the bunch was Arrival. Returning from a podcast that didn't get recorded and another shopping trip in town, our heroes resume their investigation of the Temple of Probably No Princess But We're Here Anyhow. Michael "PANC the Fighter" Ridgaway, Michael "ALPH the Red Mage" Gray, Joseph "JOEV the White Mage" Martin, and Anna "LITA the Black Mage" Bryniarski find more baddies to slice and dice (it's funny, because they're rolling dice) as Nathaniel "the GM" Hoover barely holds things together. Here's what you can expect from this installment, which is pretty much the same as the one you missed, but with different monsters: - The GM and the players have a disagreement about what exactly constitutes a pony - The PANC song - The players judge on the basis of color, in a completely non-racist way - The reality of targeting enemies in a game where terrain and distances are irrelevant - Imps suffering existential crises The adventure continues here!
Following in the podsteps of the Maid RPGcast and Crystalis D&Dcast before it, I humbly present to you the Final Fantasy RPGcast, GameCola's third foray into the realm of podcasted videogame-themed tabletop role-playing games. The story and game mechanics of the original NES Final Fantasy were adapted by Nathaniel "Guy Who's Writing This Post" Hoover to create an adventure so authentic that you'll swear we really are playing the original NES Final Fantasy, up until the part where the players open their mouths and turn it into a quest for pancakes. Starring in this edition are Michael "PANC the Fighter" Ridgaway, Michael "ALPH the Red Mage" Gray, Joseph "JOEV the White Mage" Martin, and Anna "LITA the Black Mage" Bryniarski. Here's a small sampling of what to expect in this first installment of their hungry, hungry heroics: - Bruce - The realization that the towns and castles of Final Fantasy are pretty terrible when you think about them too hard - Shopping! I swear this is more interesting than it sounds. - The players ignore the main quest to fabricate a subplot about treasury thieves, which the GM just kinda goes along with - A quick lesson in Conerian economics, where indiscriminate murder is the lifeblood of the economy - Discussions of defacing corpses for charity - We are horrible people The adventure begins here!
